Simply Magic (Simply Quartet, Book 3), by Mary Balogh

On a splendid August afternoon Susanna Osbourne is introduced to the most handsome man she has ever seen . . . and instantly feels the icy chill of recognition. Peter Edgeworth, Viscount Whitleaf, is utterly charming—and seemingly unaware that they have met before. With his knowing smile and seductive gaze, Peter acts the rake; but he stirs something in Susanna she has never felt before, a yearning that both frightens and dazzles her. Instantly she knows: this brash nobleman poses a threat to her heart . . . and to the secrets she guards so desperately.

From the moment they meet, Peter is drawn to Susanna’s independence, dazzled by her sharp wit—he simply must have her. But the more he pursues, the more Susanna withdraws . . . until a sensual game of thrust-and-parry culminates in a glorious afternoon of passion. Now more determined than ever to keep her by his side, Peter begins to suspect that a tragic history still haunts Susanna. And as he moves closer to the truth, Peter is certain of one thing: he will defy the mysteries of her past for a future with this exquisite creature—all Susanna must do is trust him with the most precious secret of all. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
The third in Balogh's Simply series of Regency romances, centered on a group of friends who teach at a private girls' school in Bath, is absorbing and appealing. Susanna Osbourne is one of the teachers at Miss Martin's School for Girls, a gentleman's daughter who has been alone in the world since she lost her father and her home at age 12, leaving her with depth, complexity and a cautious nature. At 23, Susanna's satisfaction with her life and career doesn't waver, even when she meets Viscount Whitleaf, Peter Edgeworth, 26, while visiting a friend's estate for the summer. Peter's good looks, charm and easy flirtation strike Susanna as frivolous, and his connection to her childhood home and early trauma frighten her. But despite Susanna being "gauche as a girl just stepping out of a schoolroom for the first time," they are drawn to each other, a friendship develops, and it looks to lead someplace both of them are afraid to go. The conflicts are mostly to do with the way Susanna and Peter resolve to accept the social realities of their time, and how in failing, they bring out the best in each other. This is an unusually subtle approach in a romance, and it works to great effect. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Susanna Osbourne is enjoying a perfectly lovely holiday in the countryside until she meets the wealthy nobleman Peter Edgeworth. Despite Susanna's best efforts to let Peter know she has no interest whatsoever in him, the viscount, who is visiting a friend at a neighboring estate, insists on flirting with her. Peter's persistent charm gradually melts Susanna's icy reserve, and the two end up sharing one wonderfully romantic afternoon together. But then Susanna disappears, forcing Peter to solve the mystery of her past if he is to have any chance at all of a life with her. New York Times best-selling Balogh continues her superb Simply romance series featuring four teachers from Miss Martin's School for Girls with another exquisitely crafted Regency historical that brilliantly blends deliciously clever writing, subtly nuanced characters, and simmering sensuality into a simply sublime romance. Balogh is still the best Regency writer on the market
By Kathy Kaiser
It pains me to read the other reviews of this book because I feel that poor Mary Balogh is held to a higher standard than other Regency writers. She is still by far the best writer concentrating on the Regency era. She still captures the atmosphere, the mores, the dialogue, and the thinking of that time period better than any other writer on the market. And, the characters are always different. While some of the reviewers didn't like these specific characters' traits or reactions to events, they are not taking into account the fact that Balogh created their distinct personalities years ago. The character of Peter, Viscount Whitleaf, showed up in a book written five years ago! That's impressive to me. She can create characters in her mind and keep a running thread of their traits through many books and many years. Their personalities may be too mild for some readers, but I enjoy the fact that Balogh sees the world through very differing kinds of eyes. She has written many of the archetypical dark, tortured heroes in her day and will definitely do so again, but this hero happens to be outwardly kind and flirtatious. What is wrong with that? He is still interesting.

The story, to me, is compelling as well. How can the reviewers find tepid the idea of a young woman falling in love (but trying not to) with the man who is linked to the cause of her father's suicide?! I think that Balogh does create "angst" (as one reviewer wanted) in the conflict that their love will always be tainted by the reasons for her father's suicide. They must find a way to overcome that dilemma.

Her books are politically correct as one reviewer stated (her heroines do always seem to need some career or self-sufficiency in their lives before they agree to love the hero) but that is, in all probability, a decision made by the editors and publisher, not necessarily just Balogh. I still think that a Balogh book is ten times better than any of the other ridiculous, amateurish, poorly written books in the Romance section of the bookstore these days.

Magical Regency!
By Beverly Romance Books
"Simply Magic" is a dramatic and sensual story about two individuals who fall in love, only to discover their love is complicated by a disturbing interwoven past. Peter Edgeworth, Viscount Whitleaf has been a perfect gentleman of the ton, while avoiding all of the eligible marriageable young ladies his mother has put in his path. It is on a walking path on the estate of a friend that he meets the beautiful and independent school teacher Susanna Osbourne, saying to himself, "There she is." Struggling with unrecognized love at first site, no matter how much Peter attempts to avoid Susanna, he constantly finds himself drawn to her. They quickly become close friends, walking the estate paths and discussing many topics, while at the same time fighting a growing desire for each other. The innocent Susanna realizes as a viscount there can be no future with Peter, but she is also saddened as he does not seem to recognize her from the past as a young girl when she lived at a nearby estate where her father was a steward. But many do not recognize the beautiful Susanna as the young twelve year old girl who suddenly disappeared after the sudden suicide of her father. She has lived with the pain of this secret for years, growing in beauty and intelligence as a teacher at the very school she attended as a charity pupil, due to the kindness of none other than one of the famous Bedwyn family. Having a holiday with friends is a delightful vacation that becomes a bit disconcerting and she finds herself counting the limited days she can spend with Peter. When friendship turns to desire that builds to an intense afternoon of passion, Peter takes her innocence. When he offers carte blanche instead of marriage, Susanna runs back to her school, but finds she cannot run from her heart. Simon misses his dear friend and realizing his mistake and that he loves Susanna, he creates a plan to earn back her friendship and love. But soon their intertwined intense past is revealed. Will their love be strong enough to overcome the shocking revelations?

There is nothing simple about Mary Balogh's "Simply" Series. Once again she has proven that she is the modern Jane Austen in this beautiful and heartwarming tale. For Regency romance fans, Ms. Balogh has the talent to take readers back to the Regency Period, making them feel they are there and intimately involved with the characters. Each book builds from previous stories and dearly loved characters return to be interwoven with new. Simply Magic is a truly pleasurable read like many of the other Balogh Regencies. A romance fan's delight would be a long vacation alone with a stack of Balogh Regencies reading them in order, enjoying an arm chair travel back in time to the Regency period!

Romance Prozac
By Rosamond1
I'm afraid this is going to be the last Mary Balogh book I buy. It's painful to admit this to myself because, since discovering her novels (my first was No Man's Mistress) and then glomming all her back titles from the last 20 years, I've spent many a happy hour in her Regency romance world.

But Balogh's titles of the past six years--the "Slightly" and "Simply" books--have all disappointed me and Simply Magic is, sadly, the worst of the lot. I continued to buy and read Balogh, in spite of my disappointment, because I'd hoped she was in a slump from which she'd emerge. But after reading Simply Magic, I'm giving up that Balogh will ever again write the heart-rending, angsty gems (The Temporary Wife, The Notorious Rake, Heartless, Dancing With Clara, Lord Carew's Bride, et al.) that made her reputation.

Where to begin with what's wrong with this latest effort? With the uninspiring beta hero (among the most irritating I've ever encountered in the genre) who's unbecomingly dominated by his morally-challenged mama (and who sheepishly admits to the heroine his knees shake when he has to give his steward an order)? Or the emotionally stunted heroine whose behaviour seems like that of someone clinically depressed throughout most of the story--complete with a sort of disassociation of her mind with her body when it comes to sex? And then there's Balogh's unfortunate penchant, which has become more and more pronounced in her recent works, to clog the story with so many extraneous characters and tidbits about their lives that the reader feels the need to take notes.

The biggest problem I have with this book, however, is that it reveals Balogh's abandonment of what I believe is THE crucial premise of the romance story. Balogh spends a great deal of energy on making the point to the reader that the "love story" is not the cake in her heroine's life but the frosting. In her recent novels she takes pains to show the heroine doesn't require the masculine essence of the hero, in its highest form of romantic love, for her emotional, spiritual and physical completion. Her recent heroines are emotionally self-sufficient, have employment they love, and while it would be ever so luscious and easy-around-the-manor to be married, it's not a core, primal necessity for their life's fulfillment.

There's always a moment in Balogh's recent books where the hero has this epiphany, when he "gets it" that the heroine will be just fine without him. The story is not allowed to move on, in fact, until the hero has that bit of feminist-tinged dogma firmly implanted in his head. I suppose all of us modern types are supposed to nod in agreement but, in a romance novel, I find the whole presentation dreary to the max. (Can we not escape the death of romantic love anywhere? Not even in its supposed last bastion, the pastel cover romance novel?)

I read romance novels to experience the archetypal wonder of romantic love between a man and a woman--a love that torments and creates upheavel but also redeems, completes, saves. Romantic love is full of messy dependency, jealousy, and a lot of shadow--that's what makes it romantic. It gives a vision, a much needed vision, that continues to persist and inspire--and has great power to explain the behaviour of men and women toward each other. Balogh used to write books that glorified that archetype. Often employing the stock characters of the genre--the dark, tortured hero, the empathetic, nurturing heroine. But then she "saw the light" (or something) and her works have devolved over the last several years into neat, passionless feminist samplers that have more than a politically correct whiff to them--and all the depth and complexity of a "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" column--or worse, the Regency equivalent of a Glamour magazine editorial about balancing career and "relationship."

Simply Magic reminds me of a kind of romance prozac. It calms, tones down, erases and tames the wild beasts of the masculine and feminine romantic archetypes. I don't want that drug. I want to feel.

DARNELL ROCK IS not the kind of kid who volunteers to write for the newspaper—it sounds too much like homework. But this is Darnell’s last chance to pull himself together and make a positive contribution to his school. At first, Darnell would rather be hanging out with his sister and his friends. But soon he gets interested in the Oakdale Gazette. Much to his surprise, Darnell discovers that people pay attention to the words he writes. Before he knows it, Darnell changes from a kid who can’t do anything right to a person who can make a difference.

A struggling middle school student finds a way to turn his life around when he works on the school newspaper; PW called this story "lively" and "uplifting." Ages 8-12.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Darnell Rock, 13, has always taken a lackadaisical attitude toward school and is a fringe member of the Corner Crew, South Oakdale Middle School's semi-deviant clique. Although they are quite close, he and his twin sister, Tamika, engage in nonstop verbal one-upmanship. Things begin to change for Darnell after he joins, on a whim, the staff of the school newspaper. He has a chance encounter with a homeless man and ends up writing an article that advocates turning over a piece of school property to the homeless so that they can grow vegetables there. This proposal fosters debate within the school and, after the city's daily paper picks up the story, the whole community. This experience helps Darnell grow, and he begins to look at the world around him in a different way. Once again, Myers presents a well-written story with a realistic ending and adeptly brings to life the major players-Darnell, his friends, and his middle-class African-American family. Young readers will be interested in and able to relate to these characters. While this book might not be the author's best, it's still on target.
Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Thirteen-year-old Darnell Rock reluctantly joins the school newspaper and is surprised to find himself actually interested. His interest leads him to interview Sweeby, a homeless Vietnam veteran. The local paper picks up the story, and Darnell becomes a minor celebrity, causing a change in how he is perceived by others as well as a change in how he perceives himself. Myers includes a lot of issues here--the homeless, Vietnam, educating the "problem" child--but his story is not issue driven. It is the development of Darnell's character that moves things forward: we watch as Darnell takes his first tentative steps toward thinking and acting on his own. The dialogue is funny and down to earth, and none of the characters is a flat-out caricature. The barber-shop scene in which Darnell interviews Sweeby (and by default, everyone else in the shop) is a masterpiece of understatement. Janice Del Negro

Good Introduction to our Society for Young Readers

At times Darnell seems a little too wise for his age, but, overall, the story should inspire positive reflection for this age group.

Darnell is an African American that goes to Oakdall Middle School and he finds that he gets into a lot of trouble. He gets low grades and visits the principal often. The principal comes up with a suggestion for Darnell to join a school club, which he does. He begins to help the school newspaper with hesitation until he befriends a homeless man. By talking to the homeless man, Darnell gets a different outlook on life.
I liked and disliked this book. I disliked this book because the story moved slowly. I did like this story because I believed that Darnell was not a loser. He finally finds a homeless person who he helps by writing an article to help the others think beyond their own world.

Ghetto Reporter

What's up! What do you think about Darnell Rock Reporting? Well, this is what I thing about this Ghetto- Fab book. Darnell Rock is a tight like the light book. It's is about a boy named Darnell. He used to be the so bad. But, some thing's changes in Darnell's life. A girl named Paula Snow, tried out to be a interviewer. So Darnell wants to be a interviewer because Paula Snow works there. His sister Tamika makes fun of Paula Snow, by calling her sandwiches greasy. That is what I think. You better get this book five stars are else. Thank you. God bless.

Engaging and exciting
By Amazon Customer
My three girls and I all love to read, I mean LOVE it! We also like to discuss books we read together. As such, it is always a joy to come across a book or series that engages all of us and ends with long conversations we all learn from. While I do not feel these books are age appropriate for my 8 year old, even with an advanced reading level, it IS for my 13 and 17 year olds. After The Golden Compass, they both fought over who would get to read The Subtle Knife first.

Based on some of the reviews here, much of this series seems to personally offend anyone that is christian. It seems like anything that is threatening to their beliefs is deemed dangerous and negative. However, I think it is a good thing to have your beliefs challenged; it makes you use your mind, question things, and creates thought!

I would much rather have my girls read something they didn't agree with and found distasteful than have their right to read what they want denied. I am grateful for the freedom they experience in our country and the opportunities they are afforded because of it--opportunities to read something like these books that will make them use their minds, for example!

It comes down to this: If you are someone who likes to read, likes to be entertained, likes to use your imagination, and likes to think for yourself rather than allowing someone else to think for you, you will find value in this series!

Marvelous fantasy writing for adults and children!
By Soroma
This is by far the most engaging, intelligently-wrtten works of children's literature I have ever read. (And for anyone getting hyped up about the religious factor, please read this before you judge!) The prose is sophisticated (I would say this is for kids with a very good vocabulary, maybe a 9+), and the characters are engaging. And talk about action packed! Pullman always keeps the reader guessing, and the action always is intriguing. The books do have violence in them (nothing too gory, but there are some battle scenes with blood, and some characters die), so keep that in mind if you want to read it to kids younger than 9.

A lot of people say this book is anti-religious, anti-God, atheistic, etc. Most of these reviews have obviously not read the series. I actually found The Golden Compass in the book closet of the Catholic school where I taught English Lit! This book for certain is NOT anti-Christian. It does not preach evil values, & it does not encourage children to kill God. The book has a lot of religious aspects: souls, angels, and spirits. This book IS anti-religious corruption, and it IS against using religion to justify evil. One review mentioned the book encourages female circumcision: so wrong!...what the book said was that religions have used faith in God to cause harm to many, including the cutting of genitalia! And if Pullman is an atheist, so what? C.S. Lewis was a Christian. Does that mean Jews, Muslims and Buddhists can't enjoy the Narnia series, even though its messages aren't parallell to their own religious values?

One thing that I do like is that Pullman creates very strong-minded children for his main characters, especially Lyra. Despite having horrible parents, Lyra finds strength within to overcome seemingly impossible tasks with the aid of her daemon Pan. I like that Pullman talks a lot about how fear can destroy people and societies, and also on a subtle level, how technology gone too far can wreak havoc on the world. I also like that Lyra both respects and questions authority. She has a mind and a sense of adventure, and I love that she breaks so many female sterotypes.

I'm re-reading the series now and am giving it to my 10 year-old cousin for Christmas. I know he'll love it as much as I do!

Magical, Thoughtful, Dangerous
By J. C. Bellour
This trilogy is what reading is all about. It creates a world where you can lose yourself and reflect upon the "real world" that we live in. I found it moving and important.

I picked up a copy of "The Golden Compass" as a houseguest at a friend's house. I confess I wasn't much company, as I could not put the book down for my visit. Before I left my host's house, I went online to buy the entire Trilogy which was waiting for me when I got home. I unpacked, and started reading again.

It truly is thought-provoking and brilliant. Unfortunately, it is also dangerous to those beliefs which we simply assume to be true. Questioning and analyzing are basic intellectual activities, and these books are marvelous opportunities to use fiction to really make you think. Perhaps that's why we are seeing so many negative ratings from those who are very "faith-based". They seem to assume if Faith is questioned (which this series does), then it is anti-Christian. I don't quite get that, as I think Faith without questioning is dangerous itself.

I would agree that the youngest readers may not be equipped for the explorations these books present, but after reading them themselves, perhaps parents will be able to make an informed decision.

Read for yourself, think for yourself, allow the mysteries to absorb you. But don't expect to get a lot done outside of your reading time!!

Taken by Midnight-A Joyfully Recommended Title
By Amazon Customer
Jenna Darrow wakes up in a medical room at the Breed compound, however the only thing normal to her is the face of her best friend, Alex. Jenna has faced many things that have made it necessary for her to be strong; the loss of her husband and child, the loss of her career as an Alaskan State Trooper and the memory of the creature who broke into her house and assaulted her. Now she has to face something that just might break her. Her entire body is changing because of something that ancient being did to her that hellish night.

Brock is one of the vampire warriors who are known as the Breed. Each warrior has one special gift and Brock's is to take away pain. He has been with Jenna since the night they located the ancient in her house and destroyed him. No one is quite sure what happened to Jenna, but Brock knows the pain she has gone through intimately as he has been taking it from her. Now she is awake and they have discovered that something strange is happening to her DNA. The time Brock has spent with Jenna gave him a closer relationship then he has allowed with any woman in many years.

Jenna sees major changes in her physical body as the hours go by and while scared, she comes to see that trusting the warriors is her only chance to discover exactly what was done to her. Brock and Jenna both feel the intensity of the passion that seems to hover around them and it only takes one spark to become much more than feelings. The danger that always surrounds the Breeds, and their Breedmates, soon includes Jenna, a fact that scares Brock to some point. Knowing she has to help Brock and the others, Jenna puts her own investigation talents to work. This leads to completing a mission the Breedmates have been working towards for months but at the same time, it might just rip Brock away from Jenna for the rest of eternity.

When your past suddenly becomes an option for the future, which loses the love--past or current? Brock and Jenna both find this answer in Taken By Midnight. I was so happy to see that Jenna seemed to come out of that horrible night okay until I continued to read and saw the truth. I always thought that Brock was one of the quiet warriors but he had me hands down as I watched him not only lend his strength to Jenna when she needed it, but also helped her be able to find the ability to believe in her own strength. There were several times that I was cheering for both Jenna and Brock and other times when I wanted to shake them. For me that just meant it was an excellent book. I loved that Jenna was the most unusual heroine in this series. While she is not a true Breedmate, I found her to be something much more and the relationship between her and Brock to be stronger for it.

Taken By Midnight captivates and holds you hostage through its strong emotions and stronger passions. I couldn't put it down and I bet you won't be able to either. To say its Joyfully Recommended isn't quite enough, but it's the highest recommendation I can give Jenna and Brock's story.

Taken by Midnight (Midnight Breed, book 8) Review
By Stephanie G (Reviewer for Paranormal Haven)
Jenna Darrow has just survived an attack against an ancient evil not born of this world and she will never be as she was before. What happen during the attack is rapidly changing her body and mind. Jenna is struggling to take control of herself and her new situation at the compound of the Order. The male assigned to take care of her helps take away her pain and feel emotions she hasn't felt in years. Brock and Jenna both hold emotional scars but when their purely physical relationship turns into something more, they become what the other needs and together they make a formidable team in the fight against an enemy that must be stopped.

Jenna lost her family in a car accident years ago and has lived with the grief since. She is attacked in the last book and her determination to survive pulled her though it. I admired her character a lot for her intelligence, stubbornness and ability to keep picking herself up and moving forward no matter what cards she is dealt. Like most she has her moments of self doubt but nothing that made me dislike her character. Brock is one of the newer members of the Order, which is an elite group of ancient vampire warriors. He is a skilled fighter with a likable personality and selfless in his act of taking pain from others onto himself. He also carries baggage from his past that helps him relate to Jenna. These two click right away and you know a physical relationship between them just won't do. They make each other stronger and help each other move on from their past tragedies.

The ancient who let Jenna live didn't part without leaving a part of him in her. Unexplained changes are happening to Jenna that give her abilities no mortal should have. I thought this was an interesting twist and glad that she wasn't just another breedmate, women born with a special birthmark that makes them the only ones who can mate with breed males. I did wish that more time would have been spent on examining her new skills. I felt they were talked about then written off too quickly. I hope that more light is shined on this in future books because the whole thing really had my curiosity going.

The Order has been after Dragos for some time. He is responsible for horrific crimes against his own people that includes hiding the last ancient and kidnapping breedmates to create his own army of assassins. Though the main focus is Jenna and Brock's relationship, there is some new light shed on the situation. Dragos will not stop or run and hide from the Order just because they have managed to ruin his plans. He has yet unseen plans in the works that will prove to make him harder to find and stop for the Order. Some questions are answered and even more are left hanging. I've come to expect that from this series. I enjoyed the ending but did feel it was tidied up a bit too nicely.

Taken By Midnight is the latest in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series which is one of my favorites. This book did feel like it was a stepping stone to something bigger plot wise but it should not be skipped. Jenna and Brock's relationship alone is worth the read and there was a twist or two that I found interesting. The Midnight Breed series is a great balance of suspense, danger, unbreakable bonds and steamy love scenes. Taken By Midnight is all this while adding it's own spin to a series that is a must read for fans of paranormal romance.

Taken by Midnight
By christine rose elle
I love this series and like everyone else who has read it, was anxiously awaiting this latest book. One of the things I like best about this series is the strong female characters. And of course the hot dudes of the Breed. I have to say that I thought Taken by Midnight suffered from "re-cap-itis". In other words I felt like the author was so busy inserting the story lines thus far, that it limited her ability to contour a fresh story. I think it is a safe guess that most publishers want a reader to be able to pick up any book in a series, and get something out of it. But if you are like me, you start at the first book in the series, and yes, we tolerate the required catchup for the most part. But jeez...I felt like this whole book was a run down on stuff that already happened.
Also, I thought some of the dialogue between all the characters was really formulaic. Plus, I kept waiting for the reveal on what the heck Jenna had become. Did I miss it? Anyway, I of course want to read the next in the series, but I gotta say, so far this is my least favorite book of the series.

The Best Revenge, by Stephen White

In a riveting new novel of psychological suspense, Stephen White shines a brilliant light on the darkness that hides just beneath the surface of ordinary lives, on the fears that cripple us and the prisons we create—prisons of the body, mind, and spirit. A thriller of runaway tension, taps into our most closely guarded fears, taking us on a harrowing journey into a realm of terror and pain, of love gone wrong and vengeance gone mad.

Psychologist Alan Gregory is living through a season of discontent. With a new daughter, a wonderful wife, and a prospering career, he has little to complain about and lots of regrets: past cases that won’t let him go, patients who don’t get better, and a growing unease with keeping secrets. But Gregory has two new patients who will drag him out of his introspection—and dare him to enter a storm of injustice and revenge.

FBI special agent Kelda James is a hero, a woman who as a rookie agent made a choice, drew her gun, and saved a life, taking another. Now Kelda is hiding from the world a secret pain that is gradually crippling her body—and she has turned to Alan Gregory to help free her from the prison of her pain. Then Kelda refers a patient to Gregory, who is terrifyingly dangerous to them both.

Tom Clone served thirteen years on Colorado’s death row for a crime he claimed he didn’t commit—until an FBI agent dug up evidence that set him free. The agent’s name: Kelda James. With both Kelda and Clone telling him their innermost secrets, Alan Gregory becomes the one person who can piece together an extraordinary puzzle—of two unsolved violent deaths of vulnerable women, of a man who may be innocent or may be very lucky, and of the strange, fatal attraction between two people trapped in a horrific plot to get revenge—at any price.

A thriller that delivers a stunning body-blow of a surprise ending, captures lives colliding at unpredictable angles, probing the dangerous lies people tell to each other and themselves. In this astonishing work by a novelist at the height of his powers, Stephen White brilliantly blends thrilling action and breakneck pacing with unrivaled insight into the human mind, heart, and psyche.

Amazon.com Review
Tom Clone's stay on death row is over, thanks to new evidence uncovered by Kelda James, a young FBI agent whose efforts on Clone's behalf have not exactly endeared her to her colleagues. Referred by that same agent to psychologist Alan Gregory, Clone is struggling to adapt to life outside prison. But others who believe he got off on a technicality don't agree that the former medical student deserves his freedom, and they will go to any lengths to make sure he's punished accordingly for the crime of which he was once accused. There are some surprising plot twists here, but more interesting is Gregory's midlife crisis and his declining interest in his work: as his partner responds when he voices doubts about his efficacy as a therapist, "Those are the bricks we lay. If you've started hating the bricks, maybe it's time to reconsider being a brick layer." Certainly Gregory gets himself into more sinister and frightening scrapes than most shrinks, and this is one of his strangest cases. The Best Revenge is a solid, well-reasoned thriller, set in the marvelously drawn Colorado landscape the author has made his own, with guest appearances by minor figures familiar to readers of this increasingly popular psychological suspense series. --Jane Adams

From Library Journal
New evidence proves that Tom Clone did not commit murder, but after 13 years in prison, he has developed dark tendencies that psychologist Alan Gregory may not be able to conquer.
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
FBI agent Kelda James, a relative newcomer to the Colorado bureau, made a name for herself as a rookie by finding a kidnapped little girl and killing her abductor. Kelda's latest triumph is the discovery of DNA evidence that ostensibly exonerates death-row inmate Tom Clone, convicted of murdering his girlfriend 13 years prior. Curiosity leads Kelda to pick up the released prisoner herself, and the two of them--the wrongfully incarcerated man and the beautiful, justice-seeking federal agent--develop a curious closeness. Kelda recommends esteemed Boulder psychotherapist Dr. Allan Gregory (star of numerous White novels), who is just coming off a spell of professional burnout, to Tom to help sort out potential outside-life issues, but this only serves to make matters even stranger, for client confidentiality bars Allan from discussing the two with each other or with his best buddy, a local detective. Not everyone is convinced the DNA evidence proves Tom's innocence, and some other evil force looms in an effort to exact revenge. But who is seeking revenge? That's the central mystery here, and White's circular plot is both maddening and exhilarating. Mary Frances Wilkens

Terrific
By Bob M
A friend recently introduced me to Stephen White's character Alan Gregory as I'm currently off work while recovering from multiple spine surgeries this year. Thus, I recognize that currently I likely have more time for reading than others. However, I still value my time and won't read a book that doesn't captivate me. I found this one, and Stephen's prior book "Warning Signs", certainly well worth the time. I truly had trouble putting The Best Revenge down. The psychological intrigue was intense and thoroughly enjoyable. Although I'm reading the entire series in publication order, for someone with limited time I'd certainly highly recommend Warning Signs and The Best Revenge.

“Nate makes a great narrator, his clipped prose mimicking that of the hard-boiled detective genre, providing short, simple sentences for beginning readers, and setting up the deadpan humor. Simont's expressive drawings, tinted with watercolor washes, illustrate the characters and the action with finesse and restraint. A most appealing choice.”—Booklist, Boxed Review

From Booklist
Gr. 2-3. In this, his sixteenth book, kid detective Nate the Great tells how he solved two cases at once with the help of his faithful dog Sludge. First case: Who put a valentine ("I LOVE SLUDGE MORE THAN FUDGE") on Sludge's doghouse? Second case: Who swiped the valentine Annie was making for her little brother? Clothed in deerstalker and trench coat, Nate visits the scenes of the crimes, gathers clues, interviews witnesses, eats pancakes, and puts his little gray cells to work to solve the mysteries. In the end, Nate retreats to Sludge's doghouse to avoid receiving a mushy valentine. Nate makes a great narrator, his clipped prose mimicking that of the hard-boiled detective genre, providing short, simple sentences for beginning readers, and setting up the deadpan humor. Simont's expressive drawings, tinted with watercolor washes, illustrate the characters and the action with finesse and restraint. A most appealing choice for Valentine's Day reading. Carolyn Phelan

Mushy Valentine
By A Customer
I thought that the book, Nate the Great and The Mushy Valentine was a pretty good book to read. It was about a young boy solving two mysteries on Valentines Day. One for his dog and another for his friend. He thought hard to put all his clues together and fingured them both out. I recommand you to read this book if you are looking for a easier book to read and to understand. It was easy to follow along and to know what was going on in the story.

This new entry in the long-running, popular Soup series is fast-moving but forced. Although all the previous stories featuring Robert Newton and his friend Soup were firmly grounded in place and time (Vermont in the '40s), this one telescopes the '40s, '50s and '80s into one unpleasant, mean-spirited satire. Where there was once a sense of mischief and fun, there is now double entendre and adult humor. The plot is far from childlike: Uncle Virus Burdock (a gross Harley-riding biker in search of moonshine) finds love with female biker "Tacky." They marry in a bizarre ceremony presided over by her fellow Leatherette "Gutterball." Particularly disturbing is Soup and Robert's taste of moonshine and visit to "Swill's Hole" (an illegal bar) with Virus. This is a real disappointment from a usually funny, accomplished author. Illustrations not seen by PW . Ages 9-12.

From Publishers Weekly
Stacey Arrow makes her debut in this first book of the New Kids at the Polk Street School series, about Mrs. Zachary's kindergartners and their trials and tribulations, both as individuals and as part of a class. Stacey's first day isn't quite as terrific as she had imagined, but she does manage to zero in on Jiwon as a potential best friend, with Eddie and A.J. as runners-up. She intimidates her would-be friends with her frank comments, shoving behavior and frightening stories of her man-eating snake (a favorite stuffed animal). Emily (from the original Polk Street School series) counsels her sister on the best way to go about making and being a friend, and her advice steers Stacey in the right direction. This story will find favor with kindergartners, at least those who can read novel-length books. But the first and second graders who will find the length no problem may choose not to read about children younger than themselves. Ages 5-8.

Good, but not as good as the original polk st books
By Amazon Customer
This series came out when I was in 6th grade and I read them all. They were cute, about the kindergarteners at Polk St School. However these characters are not very well established. For instance, it was supposed to be a new year at Polk St, but Emily and Richard and the older kids were still in Ms. Rooney's 2nd grade class. If you have read any of the original Polk St books about Emily, you will notice that Stacy, Emily's little sister, wasn't in school then, when Emily was in Ms. Rooney's room. I found this inconsistant, but the story is well written.

Dating Game, by Danielle Steel

In her 57th bestselling novel, Danielle Steel brilliantly chronicles the roller-coaster ride of dating the second time around—and tells a captivating story of the surprises one woman encounters when she’s thrust into the terrifying, exhilarating world of the Dating Game.

Paris Armstrong never saw it coming. With two grown children and a lovely home in Connecticut, Paris was happy with her marriage, her family, her life. So when her husband of twenty-four years said they needed to talk, Paris couldn’ t imagine what he was about to say.

“I want a divorce,” Peter tells her. Just like that, the husband she adored had dumped her for a younger woman. And just like that, Peter and his thirty-one-year-old lover had made their plans for their future, leaving Paris to pick up the pieces of a shattered life. Within days, Peter was gone. And Paris was left to figure out how she intended to get through the next day, let alone the rest of her life.

The task could not have been more painful. First came the tears. Then the excruciating attempts by well-meaning friends to “fix her up” with men who paled in comparison to Peter. Worse yet, she still loved him. Finally, Paris realized she was in a fight for her very survival. Drastic measures were called for. Even her shrink agreed. It was time to move—as far away as possible, just after Peter remarried. Paris had never felt, or been, more alone.

Saying good-bye to the world she knew and loved, Paris heads west, to San Francisco, and discovers being single in a world full of men who were too young, too old, too married, or too good to be true. For Paris, the list seemed endless...the charming commitment-phobe...the drunken Neanderthal...the young Frenchman—so adorably sexy she almost forgot about his age, and did, for a while. With her dating track record veering between disappointing and disastrous, and her daughter now engaged to a man Paris’s age, Paris finally comes to the conclusion that romance is not in her future. That’s when her small circle of offbeat, loving friends becomes more important than ever before. And a decision Paris makes only for herself changes her life once more. The secret, she discovers finally, is in finding the gifts in life’s unexpected twists and turns, and turning despair into freedom and loss into joy.

In a poignant, wickedly funny novel about getting dumped and getting over it, about tackling life with both courage and laughter, Danielle Steel explores what it means to start over, whether you wanted to or not, and finding something better than you had before.

Review
The numbers say it all. This is novel number 47. Over 500 million Danielle Steel novels have been sold the world over. The market for Dating Game is described by her publisher as 'millions of loyal fans'. It seems safe to conclude, then, that the new novel by Danielle Steel does not represent a radical new departure for the author. She has not discovered chick-lit or cyberpunk. Dating Game is not an experimental novel, except in the sense that it is always an interesting experiment testing whether you can produce the same result with the same formula. Condensed version? Thrust into the world of contemporary dating by an unexpected divorce, Paris Armstrong eventually triumphs through adversity. Not to all tastes, but 'millions of loyal fans' evidently disagree.
