Great plotting

I don't read many Danielle Steel books because I'm more of a character-first type reader but the plot to this book captured my attention immediately. I've read that the research Steel does for her books takes longer than the actually writing of the book, and this book is actually about a woman researching her past. This book is fascinating and kept me reading far into the night.

Legacy starts out with a woman who works in admissions in a Boston university. She passes up promotions and never asks her boyfriend of 6 years if they're going anywhere. I won't give away any more plot, except to say that if you're not going forward you're going backwards. Life doesn't allow us to stay in one place.

I love books where I learn something, and Legacy teaches plenty. Lots of history, how to research your own genealogy and a lesson on finding your passion. All these lessons are wrapped up in a great story line told by a master story-teller.

What I'm not crazy about in a Steel novel is that her characters are too perfect. She uses the word beautiful to describe one of the main characters as many times as Pulp Fiction dropped the F bomb (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, Pulp Fiction didn't use it that many times). I prefer characters that have faults(not as many as I have or it wouldn't be believable) and who overcome those faults. Steel's characters overcome circumstances, but being as perfect as they are, how could they not?

But again, that's not why I picked up this book, and while perfect characters, just as perfect people, can become annoying, I was able to overlook their perfection and enjoy a great plot-driven novel.

A totally worthwhile escapism novel and up to Danielle Steel's high standards. The kind of book you can safely buy before getting on an airplane and enjoy during a coast-to-coast ride.

entertaining tale

In less than forty-eight hours, Brigitte Nicholson's life is shattered starting with her archeologist boyfriend Ted abruptly dumping her and finishing with Boston University Admissions Office firing her. Stunned with no place to go, Brigitte agrees to assist her mom who is working on a family tree.

Brigitte goes to Salt Lake City to research her ancestry at Family History Library. There she uncovers a strange mystery about her heritage as an ancestor Dakota Sioux princess Wachiwi who apparently traveled to France just before the French Revolution. While there she married a marquis. Wachiwi as the Marquise de Margerac was buried in Brittany rather than the Great Plains. Following clues takes the researcher to Sioux Falls and Paris. In France, Brigitte and Sorbonne Professor Marc Henri meet and are attached to one another. Their encounter and her family project begin to bring back la vivre de joie sprit that Brigitte had lost to complacency.

This is an entertaining tale mostly because of the exciting look at the life of Wachiwi, which is inserted throughout the enjoyable present day story line of Brigitte's research. Fast-paced in two centuries, readers will wonder what lessons Brigitte will take from the stirring life of the Sioux princess as Danielle Steel provides a winner for her fans.

Brigitte works at Boston University in the admissions office and has a boyfriend of six years (Ted). All of a sudden in one week she loses her boyfriend to an Egyptian dig and loses her job to a computer. Brigitte is 38 years old and lost. She visits her mother in New York City and then leaves reluctantly for Salt Lake City to view the archives at the Mormon Family History Library. Her mother has urged her to look for their ancestors from France (the Margeracs). She discovers Wachiwi, a Sioux who ends up married to a marquis in France. The adventure of Wachiwi makes this book special. Not like most of the Danielle Steel books.

Chapter 1

The scene in the lobby of the Hotel Vendôme on East 69th Street in New York was one of impeccable elegance and meticulous precision. The black-and-white-checked-marble floors were immaculate, red runners were rolled out the instant there was a drop of rain outside, the moldings on the walls were exquisite, and the enormous crystal chandelier that hung in the lobby was reminiscent of the finest palaces in Europe. The hotel was much smaller than the one that had inspired its decor, but for practiced travelers, it was remarkably similar to the Ritz in Paris, where the Hotel Vendôme's owner had worked as an assistant manager for two years, during his training in the finest hotels in Europe.

Hugues Martin was forty years old, a graduate of the illustrious and respected École Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland, and the hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side was his dream. He still couldn't believe how lucky he had been, how perfectly it had all come together five years before. His Swiss banker father and equally conservative mother had been devastated when he announced that he wanted to go to hotel school. He came from a family of bankers, and they thought that running a hotel, or working in one, had a seamy quality to it, of which they strongly disapproved. They had done everything they could to talk him out of it, to no avail. After four years at the school in Lausanne, he trained and eventually had respected positions at the Hotel du Cap in Cap d'Antibes, the Ritz in Paris, and Claridge's in London, and even did a brief stint at the famed Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. He figured out during that time that if he ever had his own hotel, he wanted it to be somewhere in the States.

Hugues worked at the Plaza in New York before it closed for extensive renovations, and he assumed that he was still light-years away from his dream. Then it happened. The Hotel Mulberry was put up for sale, a small tired hotel that had been run-down for years and had never been considered chic, despite its perfect location. When he heard about it, Hugues put together every penny of his savings, took out every loan he could get in both New York and Switzerland, and used all of the modest inheritance his parents had left him, which he had carefully put aside and invested. And the combination made the purchase of the hotel possible. He just managed to do it, with a mortgage on the building. And suddenly Hugues was able to buy the

Mulberry and do the necessary renovations, which took two years, and at the end of it the Hotel Vendôme was born, to the amazement of New Yorkers, most of whom said they had never even realized that there was a hotel in that location.

The building had been a small private hospital in the 1920s and was turned into a hotel in the 1940s, with abysmally bad decor. In contrast, in its transformed state, every inch of the Vendôme was magnificent, and the service was superb. Hugues had brought chefs from all over the world for their now extremely popular restaurant. His catering manager was one of the best in the business, and everyone agreed that even the food from room service was fantastic. In its first year it had become an overnight success and was booked months in advance now, with reservations made by visitors to the city from around the world. The presidential suite was one of the finest in the city. The Hotel Vendôme was an absolute gem, with beautifully decorated suites, and rooms with fireplaces, moldings, and high ceilings. The hotel faced south, so most of the rooms were sunny, and Hugues had chosen the finest china, crystal, and linens, and as many antiques as he could afford, like the chandelier in the lobby, which he had bought in Geneva at a Christie's auction. It had come out of a French château near Bordeaux and was in perfect condition.

Hugues ran his 120-room hotel with Swiss precision, a warm smile, and an iron hand. His employees were discreet and experienced, had a remarkable memory for every guest, and kept detailed files on each important client's needs and requests while they were there. It had made the Vendôme the most popular small hotel in New York for the past three years. And the moment one entered the lobby, one knew it was a special place. A young bellboy stood at the revolving door, in a uniform inspired by those the chasseurs wore at the Ritz: navy pants, a short jacket, a small amount of gold braid on the collar, and a little round hat with a strap under the chin, tilted at an angle. To meet the clients' needs, there was a fleet of willing bellmen, a crew of brilliantly capable concierges. Everyone moved rapidly to serve the guests, and the entire staff was ready to service large requests and small ones. Hugues knew that impeccable service was

essential.

The assistant managers wore black tailcoats and striped trousers, once again inspired by the Ritz. And Hugues himself was on hand night and day, in a dark blue suit, always with a white shirt and dark Hermès tie, and he had an extraordinary memory for everyone who had stayed with them and, whenever possible, greeted important guests himself. He was the consummate hotel owner, and no detail missed his practiced eye. And he expected his department heads to meet the standards that he set. Guests of the hotel came as much for the service as the luxurious decor.

As an added touch, the hotel was always filled with spectacular flowers, and its spa was one of the best. There was almost no service the staff wouldn't provide, as long as it was legal and in relatively good taste. And despite the objections Hugues knew his parents had had, he couldn't help feeling that they would have been proud of him now. He had used their money well, and the hotel had been such a success in its first three years that he was almost out of debt. It wasn't surprising, since Hugues worked day and night himself to make it what it was. And personally, his victory had come at a high price. Owning the hotel had cost him his wife. It had been the subject of considerable gossip among staff and guests.

Nine years before, when Hugues had been working at Claridge's in London, he had met Miriam Vale, the internationally famous and spectacularly beautiful supermodel. And like everyone else who laid eyes on her, he had been dazzled by her the moment they met. He had been infinitely proper and professional, as he had always been with guests of the hotels he worked in, but she was a twenty-three-year-old girl, and she had made it clear that she wanted him, and he fell head over heels in love with her overnight. She was American, and eventually he had followed her back to New York. It had been an exciting time for him, and he took a lesser position at the Plaza to be in the same city with her and continue their romance. And much to his own amazement, she was just as much in love with him, and they were married within six months. He had never been happier in his life than in their early years together.

Eighteen months later their daughter Heloise was born, and Hugues was madly in love with his wife and child. He trembled when he said it, for fear of angering the gods, but he always said then that he had the perfect life. And he was a dedicated man. Despite whatever temptations came his way in the hotel business, he was totally in love with and faithful to his wife. She continued her modeling career after Heloise was born, and everyone at the Plaza had fawned over his little girl and indulged her, and teased them about her name. Hugues assured them honestly that she had been named after his great-grandmother and he didn't expect to stay at the Plaza forever, so there was no reason not to use the name. Heloise was two years old when he bought the Mulberry and turned it into the Vendôme. He had everything he wanted then, a wife and child he loved, and his own hotel. Miriam had been far less enthused about the project and had complained bitterly that it would take too much of his time, but owning his own hotel, and one of the sort he was creating, had always been his dream.

His parents had been even less pleased about Miriam than they had been about his working in the hotel business. They had serious doubts that a spoiled, twenty-three-year-old, spectacularly beautiful, internationally known supermodel would make him a good wife. But Hugues loved her profoundly and had no doubts.

As Hugues had expected, it took two years to renovate the hotel. It came in only slightly over budget, and the end result was everything he had hoped.

He and Miriam had been married for six years, and Heloise was four, when the Hotel Vendôme opened, and Miriam had obligingly posed for some of their ads. It added a distinctive cachet that the owner was married to Miriam Vale, and male guests in particular always hoped they'd catch a glimpse of her in the lobby or at the bar. What they saw far more frequently than her mother was four-year-old Heloise following after her father, with one of the maids holding her hand, and she enchanted everyone she met. She had gone from being Heloise at the Plaza to being Heloise at the Vendôme, and became something of a mascot for the hotel, and was clearly the pride and joy of her father's life.

Greg Bones, the famous and notoriously badly behaved rock star, was one of the first guests in one of the penthouse suites, and fell in love with the hotel. Hugues was uneasy about it, because Bones was well known for trashing hotel rooms and causing chaos wherever he stayed, but he behaved surprisingly well at the Vendôme, much to Hugues's relief. And they were fully prepared to meet celebrity needs and requests.

On Greg's second day there, he met Miriam Vale Martin at the bar, surrounded by assistants, magazine editors, stylists, and a famous photographer after a shoot. They had just finished a twelve-page spread for Vogue that afternoon, and as soon as they recognized Greg Bones, they invited him to join them. And what happened afterward hadn't taken long. Miriam spent most of the following night in Greg's suite with him, while Hugues thought she was out when he was working. The maids were all aware of where she was and what had happened-the room service waiters discovered it when Greg ordered champagne and caviar for them at midnight. And it rapidly became the backstairs talk of the hotel and spread like a forest fire. By the end of the week Hugues had heard about it too. He didn't know whether to confront her or to hope it would pass.

Hugues, Miriam, and Heloise had their own private apartment one floor below the two penthouse suites, and the hotel security were well aware that Miriam was constantly slipping up the back stairs to join Greg in his suite, whenever Hugues was in his office. It was an extremely awkward situation for Hugues, who didn't want to ask the famous rock star to leave the hotel. It would cause a public scandal. Instead he begged his wife to come to her senses and behave. He suggested she go away for a few days, to stop the madness of what she was doing. But when Bones checked out, she flew to Los Angeles with him on his private plane. She left Heloise with Hugues and promised she'd be back in a few weeks, and said this was something she had to get out of her system, and begged him to understand. It was a heartbreak and humiliation for Hugues, but he didn't want to lose his wife. He hoped that if he let her do it, she'd get over her infatuation quickly. She was twenty-nine years old, and he thought she'd come to her senses. He loved her, and they had a child. But it was all over the tabloids by then, and on Page 6 of the New York Post. It was a crushing humiliation for Hugues, in front of all of his employees and an entire city.

Hugues told Heloise that her mother had to go away to work, which was something that the little girl already understood at four. The story became harder to maintain when Miriam didn't come home. And three months later, back in London with Greg Bones, Miriam told him she was filing for divorce. It had been the most devastating moment of his life, and although his demeanor with the guests was unchanged, and he was ever smiling and attentive to them, in the three years since, those who knew him well were aware that he had never been the same again. He was far more aloof, serious, deeply hurt, and withdrawn in his private moments, although he put a good face on it for his staff and guests.

Hugues had been the soul of discretion since the divorce. He was one of the most sought- after bachelors in New York, invited to everything, although he rarely accepted. He preferred to keep a low profile, and keep his personal life to himself. And most of the time he was working at the hotel. The hotel came before all else for him, except for his daughter, who came first. He hadn't had a serious relationship since Miriam left and didn't want one. He believed that to run a hotel properly, you had to sacrifice your own life. He was always there, keeping an eye on everything, and working incredible hours, most of the time behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the hotel.

A month after her divorce from Hugues was final, Miriam married Greg Bones, and they had been married now for two years and had just had a baby girl six months before. Heloise had only seen her mother a few times since she left. Heloise was sad about it. And Hugues was angry at Miriam. She was too busy in her new life, too obsessed with Greg, and now their child, to tend to their daughter or even see her. Heloise and Hugues had become relics of her past. It left Hugues no other choice but to be both mother and father to their child. He never commented on it to Heloise, but he considered it a painful circumstance for them both.

I received this as soon as it was available for download. It was a great book and I really enjoyed the characters. Heloise is a great character and Martin is so easy to fall in love with. Another great book by Danielle that I really really enjoyed.

Will the real Danielle Steele Please Come Back!!!

I have read EVERY Danielle Steele book ever written I WAS one of the faithful fans who would run out and buy the book on release date. HOWEVER NO MORE!!! This was not only the worst book I have ever read but a total waste of time. Okay the Daddy loves his daughter and the daughter loves her daddy...we get it...why do we need to hear this every other page. Not to mention that the Daddy is a spineless wimp and the daughter is a spoiled brat. Okay we get that too. So here we have a book about a spineless wimp and a spoiled brat....but there is one thing missing...A PLOT!!! Hello will the real Danielle Steele please come back to us.....remember the good old days where you could pick up a Danielle Steele book and not want to put it down untill its all done. I dont so much care about the money I lost...but I will never get my time back that I spent reading this plotless book with two of the worst characters I have ever read. One more faithfull Danielle Steele reader down the tubes....she lost me over this waste of time dribble book that I just read.

This might be the worst book I've ever listened to. The man reading the book sounds like he's moonlighting from his job recording safety instructions for airlines. Worse than the narrator, though, there is absolutely no substance here. The characters are very hard to like, let alone relate to. The father is a spineless coward and the daughter is a spoiled brat. Maybe the storyline would be feasible if it were an 11-year-old child throwing a tantrum about her father dating and remarrying, but a 20-something woman? Come on! I've only gotten through disk 5 (of 8), and I'm not sure I'll be able to suffer through the rest...

The Story of Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball is about the struggles of one black man who made a big difference. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college but was not let into the Major Leagues because his skin was black. Robinson played on the Brooklyn Dodgers in the "Noble Experiment" which was meant Jackie being the first black on a white team. His team looked down on him because of the color of his skin. When the fans yelled slurs at him and other teams yelled at him it overwhelmed the Dodgers. They finally stood up for Robinson. I recommend this wonderful book, Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball because it has a lot of action and emotion.

The Story of Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball is about the struggles of one black man who never gave up. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college and wanted to go to the Major's but they wouldn't let him because he was black. The general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey took a chance on Jackie. Rickey said would let him play if he didn't fight back over racial slurs and attacks. This was known as the "Noble Experiment". Jackie's team looked down on him and fans harassed him because of the color of his skin. At last everybody realized Robinson was a great guy and that the color of a person's skin doesn't mater. In the end Jackie Robinson won the admiration of all American people. I think that you should read this book because it shows someone with great courage.

When Jackie Robinson played on the Brooklyn Dodgers he was part of the "Noble Experiment" and his teammates were unfriendly. Also fans yelled slurs at Jackie. In 1947 Jackie Robinson won Rookie of the year and the admiration of the American people. I recommend this book because it tells how Jackie Robinson was a great athlete and a brave person.

Bayleigh "Bay" Stewart is the sensitive middle daughter of Rip Stewart. She can't shoot or fight like either of her sisters, but she can balance the books and be a right-hand to her elder sister, Sloan, who will inherit the plantation upon his death. When Bay is captured by the Comanche, it is Long Quiet, a half-breed who's had feelings for her ever since he saw her back East, who finds her. He saves the life of a Comanche chief who has enslaved her and is invited to his village. Bay has been with the Comanches for three years, and in that time she has become strong, but she still dreams of her dream man, Jonas. But it's not Jonas who strikes a fire in her blood. Bay is given to Long Quiet as a gift and she is fearful at first, but under his gentle hand, she opens her heart to him. When someone tries to kill her, they escape, and though their feelings for each other are plain, there is one problem: he wants to stay in Comancheria; Bay wants to go back home. With a heavy heart, Bay goes home, only to discover that her father is in financial trouble and it's up to her to fix it, by marrying Jonas. There is one complication, though: she's pregnant. Long Quiet comes back into her life and agrees to marry her (Rip's shotgun was a great motivator), but he believes the only reason she wanted him was because he was rich, and the story continues to unfold. I like the way the author revealed the layers of Bay's acquired strength and delved into the relationship with her father and elder sister. The way she managed to show Long Quiet's "uncivilized" Comanche side was interesting, too. She also had me guessing as to how she'd resolve the conflict between Bay and Long Quiet. This was my favorite book in the series.

Very robust characters

At times I was frustrated with Dark House because it seemed to move a bit more slowly than most thrillers to which I'm accustomed. But eventually I found that to be OK, because Barclay takes her time to thoroughly develop her characters. Other writers of crime novels develop characters, of course, but usually only two or three, and usually the second-tier characters are fairly unidimensional--they're selfish, or stupid, or brilliant, etc., and a single quality tends to define them.

Even the secondary characters in Dark House were complex. With two exceptions, none of the major or even minor characters was without complexity, did not show qualities that were admirable and those that were at times foolish, bullheaded, etc. The stereotypical cop-in-charge-who-blows-the-investigation-because-he's-arrogant isn't in fact stereotypical: sometimes he's that way, but sometimes he sees that maybe he's been too narrow-minded and needs to consider the possibilities that the protagonist, Joe Lucchesi, may be right. And even the two exceptions--the main "bad guys" of the story--were multidimensional if you include their childhood years, during which you see how they were twisted into the sociopaths they eventually became.

It's not rare for an author of a crime novel (e.g., James Patterson's Alex Cross novels) to make me care about the protagonist, and perhaps two or three other main individuals. But I don't recall any other crime novel that permitted me to get to know even minor characters, and that revealed a refreshingly realistic depiction of virtues and flaws in virtually the entire collection of people who populate the book.

Barclay really had me at the end. I did NOT correctly anticipate who the traitor was toward the end of the book. And literally as I turned the last page I was still worried that Barclay was going to indulge in one of those "I've got the readers engaged, now I'm going to sucker-punch them" endings. But she didn't. Good ending. Good job of making me eager to read the next Joe Lucchesi novel.

character driven cat and mouse thriller

As part of official policy following the shooting of a weapon, NYPD police officer Joe Lucchesi goes on leave after he shot and killed kidnapper Donald Riggs, but not before the culprit murdered his victim and her mother. Needing to get away from the city, one year later he takes his wife and their son Shaun to Waterford, Ireland.

However, Shaun's girlfriend vanishes for no apparent reason. Joe assumes Riggs' best friend Duke Rawlins is deeply involved as he believes Katie Lawson was abducted. He explains his theory to the local Garda, but they treat him as if he is a paranoid loose cannon rather than a peer. When they do nothing, Joe begins an investigation that angers the Garda who warn him that he cease and desist or he will be sent home.

This is an interesting relationship drama that includes deep discerning looks at families and at blood pacts that will stun and delight the audience. The story line focuses on how people act with one another as readers see first hand how the Lucchesi family get on with one another and why Rawlins reacts like he does with the death of his best friend Donnie. Fans of character driven cat and mouse thrillers that allow the suspense to simmer will want to read DARKHOUSE.

Best detective novel in ages!

Being a nursing student and a lover of books, it's hard to fit in the time to read a novel properly. I grab little snippets here and there and they last a few weeks. I went out of my way to finish my studies so that I could spend the whole day reading this story. It is unbelievably written, the characters are realistic and come to life on the pages! I don't normally write reviews, but Alex Barclay deserves every bit of praise for this novel. I am only saddened that it's the only kindle novel available by this author.

From the perspective of a critical reader

- this book fell into the "I wish I had not bought this" category. It is not particularly badly written, but I found the hero's actions to be less than romantic and the whole scenario somewhat unbelievable. Furthermore, although the story is set in Regency-era London and then in Scotland, there was very little detail provided to make me feel that I was really in the period. Yes, there was a derelict castle, there were the usual retainers. But the story could have been set in Scotland in any year, in any century, apart from the occasional reference to transportation . There were no references to what was happening elsewhere in politics, society or even in Scotland itself. I find this kind of a narrative, torn from history, rather hard to take. Where was the history in this historical romance?
I *am* picky about such things, and this review is for people who care about the use of history as more than wallpaper or a generic label. If you are a Joan Johnston fan (or the author herself), ignore this review. If you don't particularly care that the historical setting be somewhat close to real history, again, this review is not for you.
This book is related to AFTER THE KISS, although I suspect I am missing a book in between. Very briefly put, between AFTER THE KISS and this book THE BRIDEGROOM, the daughters - of a British duke have grown up. One of them, Rebecca, is unhappily married, and comes to love a man whom she cannot marry since he is so low in rank. [Her story and his forms the backdrop to the major story, that of her sister and a man out for revenge].
The hero Clay is a peer who has been disgraced by her father's actions (however well-intentioned). Since he lost his family, his title, his estates, and then his freedom, he bears a grudge against her entire family. Althouh the heroine, Regina (Lady Regina Blackthorne) knows this, she forms a friendship with him, believing his grudge to be a matter of the past. He has her kidnapped, thrown into a brothel from where he pretends to rescue her. He then persuades her to marry him, before springing the series of revelations - he hates her and her family, he wants to be revenged on her father, and so forth. He keeps his promises by preventing Regina from meeting her father, and vice versa. There is some mystery generated by the fact the hero has been wrongly accused, of course, and that the real villain is at large and in an unexpected position to strike again. There is however no reason given for the villain to want to hurt the hero in particular.
Part of my problems with this book was that I could not believe in the whole revenge scenario. I could believe that the hero would want to be revenged for his sufferings, and that he could present himself falsely to a gullible female. But could the heroine have been that gullible - to believe in the good faith of someone with cause for grievance, and to do some other stupid things? While a convicted felon lost his estates, removing a title even from a convicted peer was not easy. There is a complicated process of attainder. Furthermore, Rebecca's marriage could not be annulled so easily, and certainly not on the whim of her husband alone. All this rather detracted from the story. I won't even go into the problems with Mick's real identity.
I had problems with the characterization as well. Clay's desire to seek "compensation" for the loss of his title and estates (for several years) as well as the hardship he suffered is understandable. But he seemed too much like a stock character, the wronged hero out for revenge [think Edmond Dantes of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO]. He shows very little growth in the course of the story, although he recognizes - before the real villain is unmasked - that it is wrong to keep Regina and her father apart. Regina is amazingly quick to forgive Clay for putting her in danger and for tricking her into marriage, not to mention keeping her from her family.
On the other hand, Rebecca and Mick were well-drawn, and I wished the book had been about them, even though Mick's good fortune is almost unbelievable.
The minor characters tended to fade quickly and made little impression on me or even on the hero or heroine (since Regina forgot about the orphans so quickly, for example).
If you like a good tightly constructed plot, with a real sense of living in the Regency period, I really cannot recommend this book. If you want your Regency lite, this book might satisfy, but again it might not, depending on how credible you find the romance between Clay and Regina.

Disappointing

This book begins okay, and it's interesting to meet the characters from the previous books in the series, but about halfway through I began to get really bored. The hero is far too indecisive, the plot comes undone very quickly and the ending is so abrupt and contrived it left me shaking my head in disbelief. Ms. Johnston appears to have a hard time writing about characters who really have a dark side to them - Carlisle could have been much better constructed, but his angst seems weak. Its also very difficult to make the hero from one book the apparant villain in the next (Blackthorne), and we never do understand Cedric Ambleside's motives in this story. Too contrived, particularly the ending, and not enough real characterization.

Dylan Hart flipped his cell phone shut and rubbed his hand over his forehead, trying not to stare at the girl on the other side of the office. She was out to slay him, his nemesis, the bane of his existence--Skeeter Bang, five feet eight inches of blond bombshell leaning over a computer.

Jail.

Bait.

She knocked a cigarette out of the pack of Mexican Faros on the desk and struck a match off her belt.

"Put that out," he ordered. She knew there was no smoking in the office.

"Make me," she said, then stuck the Faro between her lips and inhaled, holding the match to the end of the cigarette. A billow of smoke came out of her mouth when she exhaled.

Make me?

Dylan was the boss of 738 Steele Street in Denver, Colorado, second in command of Special Defense Force, SDF, a group of tough-as-nails black ops shadow warriors who specialized in doing the Department of Defense's dirty work.

"Put out the damn cigarette, Skeeter," the man working at the last computer said. "And if you bend over that desk one more time, I'm going to paddle you."

Thank you, Superman, Dylan thought.

The girl was out of control, but Superman, a.k.a. Christian Hawkins, had kicked more ass and taken more names than most men alive. He could handle Skeeter Bang, and honest to God, they had bigger problems, much bigger, like the phone call he'd just gotten from General Grant--and of course, there was still that little problem of the death sentence he'd picked up on his last mission. Wouldn't want to forget about that now, would he?

Yes. Actually, he would, but forgetting about it wasn't very goddamn likely.

"Skeeter," Hawkins warned her again.

And the chit put it out, just like that, without batting an eyelash or missing a beat. Though who the hell would know if Skeeter batted her eyelashes? The girl always wore sunglasses, and a damn ball cap Dylan was about ready to burn, literally, put it in a trash can and blast it with a flamethrower.

He was hardly ever at Steele Street to see her, and then even when he was there, he couldn't actually see her--which was all for the best. Just the way he liked it.

Except now he had this walking time bomb thing happening, and if it turned out that things weren't going to go his way and the whole damn shooting match was about to be over, well, maybe he should tell her how he felt.

Or maybe not.

Shit. He was such an idiot. He shouldn't have come home. He should have just toughed it out in Indonesia.

"So what did General Grant want?" Hawkins asked, gesturing at the cell phone Dylan still held in his hand. General Richard "Buck" Grant was SDF's commanding officer at the Department of Defense, DOD. He deployed them, paid them, and made sure damn few people beyond the secretary of defense had a clue what they did for a living. They trained at Quantico and Fort Bragg, lived in Denver, flew out of Peterson AFB or Buckley, and were the only group of special forces operators in the world with a twenty-year-old girl on their team, even if she was only the office manager and their computer tech.

She also just happened to be one of the best auto mechanics they'd ever had at Steele Street--which was saying a lot, considering that most of SDF was made up of a bunch of former juvenile delinquent car thieves who'd stolen, chopped, and rebuilt more cars than anyone else in the history of Denver. To the cops and the gangs, the short alley called Steele Street in lower downtown was still synonymous with grand theft auto, no matter that none of the guys had stolen a car in years.

Guys--that was his point. Every teenage thief at Steele Street had been a guy. General Grant had started SDF with those same guys, until three years ago, when Hawkins had dragged home a spooky, baby-faced street rat with long blond hair and twenty stitches holding her face together.

Geezus. They all needed their heads examined.

"Dylan?"

He jerked his attention back to Hawkins. The expression on his friend's face told him he'd been caught red-handed, staring at her ass again. Dammit. He hadn't hardly noticed her the first two years she'd been at Steele Street--and then one day, he had noticed her, noticed that suddenly she had more curves than a Camaro, that her stringy blond hair had turned into a platinum waterfall, and that though she was still spooky as hell, she wasn't spooked anymore. She'd been standing on her own two feet--in combat boots, no less--with confidence radiating off her like a supernova.

He'd been noticing her ever since. He couldn't seem to help himself, which pissed him off to no end.

Ignoring Hawkins's knowing grin, he cleared his throat.

"Grant's concerned about some documents he saw at Senator Whitfield's mansion tonight." "Concerned" was putting it mildly. "Apoplectic" was more like it--which meant maybe Dylan ought to stop getting distracted by Skeeter's butt and start focusing on the job he got paid to do.

"I thought he was on his way to the London conference tonight," Hawkins said.

"Whitfield's was his last stop. He's headed to the airport now, but he's pretty damn sure the documents are exactly what the guys on the E-ring of the Pentagon are afraid they are--the Godwin file."

"And that warranted an immediate phone call to us?"

"Yes," Dylan said. The general knew better than to drag his feet on something as volatile as the Godwin file, if what he'd seen really was the Godwin file. Some people doubted that the documents actually existed. Others prayed every night that they didn't.

"So what does he want us to do?"

"Steal the file." That was the mission. Steal the damn thing and bury it, before it blew up the careers of half a dozen congressmen and another half-dozen major players at the Pentagon.

"From Senator Whitfield?" Hawkins's gaze sharpened with interest.

Dylan knew it sounded nuts. Stealing from a U.S. senator was the kind of mission guaranteed to get somebody's ass thrown in Leavenworth, even if the thieves worked for the Department of Defense--especially if they worked for the DOD. On top of all the regular "thou shalt not steal" laws, federal law explicitly forbade the use of military personnel for operations within the United States. More than once, though, when a situation had gotten sticky enough, Grant had shuffled him and a couple of the guys through the FBI's payroll so they could follow through on a mission without having their backsides completely exposed.

Grant hadn't mentioned any shuffling tonight, but Dylan knew their commanding officer always did his best to cover their asses and their tracks. Of course, under normal circumstances, Buck Grant and Arthur Whitfield were on the same side, America's side, and under normal circumstances, U.S. Army generals did not go around authorizing the theft of top-secret documents from senators--but nothing about the Godwin file was normal.

It was a legend, a myth, a time bomb that had been lurking in the murky waters of the Defense Department's rumor mill for over a decade. It was the bogeyman sitting at the intersection of U.S. foreign policy and clandestine operations, and if the rumors were true, it had been a death warrant for a CIA agent and the U.S. ambassador under his protection, just the sort of dirty laundry nobody wanted aired, especially the people whose names were on the orders.

"Whitfield has an appointment to see the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Monday morning at nine a.m. Grant wants the file to disappear before the meeting."

"So we're heading to Washington, D.C."

"I am." It was a one-man job, and despite certain god-awful inconveniences in his current situation, he preferred to keep it that way. His luck had been running nothing but bad lately. Either that or he'd hit the top spot on some real mover and shaker's shit list, because things that shouldn't ever go wrong had gone wrong in Jakarta.

"You're going to need somebody to watch your back," Hawkins said.

"Creed and his team aren't due back until Sunday." Which meant backup was a luxury he didn't have.

"They might make it by tomorrow night."

"By tomorrow night, the deed will be done, and I'll be on my way home."

"You should still have somebody with you," Hawkins insisted.

"And that would be?" Dylan asked, giving the other man's leg a pointed look. A cast went from just below Hawkins's knee to down around his foot. The broken ankle was compliments of a successful mission six weeks ago in Afghanistan that had netted the U.S. armed forces a long-sought-after terrorist leader. No one was naming names at this point. Hawkins, with two other SDF operators, Creed Rivera and Kid Chaos, had done their jobs so well, word had yet to leak out that the terrorist leader was even missing, let alone that he was sitting in a cell in Guantanamo Bay.

In answer, Hawkins flicked his gaze toward Skeeter.

A shiver of alarm skittered down Dylan's spine. Hawkins couldn't be serious. Skeeter? On a mission?

No way in hell.

Especially one of his missions, which all required deception, deceit, discretion, and stealth of the highest order, not to mention plenty of sheer, unadulterated nerve. He was a thief, the best. Big things, little things, cars, computer chips, ideas and identities, fingerprints, information, jewels, gems, high-tech junk, a nuclear warhead out of Tajikistan, or seventeen million dollars out of an Indonesian warlord's black money slush fund, whatever General Grant wanted, Dylan delivered. Good, but not great

I liked Crazy Love, and enjoyed reading it, but at the same time, it was a bit of a let down and not what I wanted it to be. Janzen has been setting up this book for a while now, and it just wasn't what I expected it to be.

The plot of the book was pretty good. It wasn't as in-your-face action oriented and danger filled as the others, but it was a good storyline. There's really a two-prong plot in a way. Part of the story is getting the top-secret file, and the other part relates to a mission gone bad that Dylan has just returned from. In actuality, they are tied together. Overall, the storyline worked and I liked it.

I will say that I wish Janzen had summarized the bad guy's previous role in the series a little better. The antagonist first appeared in book 3 I believe, which was published last fall and by the time I read this book, the details were rather fuzzy. Janzen gave brief mentions of that, but not enough to bring it all back. It would have helped if she'd summarized a little more so that the antagonist's role was a little clearer.

Another detail that bugged me a bit was that at the beginning of the book, Dylan has just returned from a mission where you learn a little later that he was captured and tortured. Yet at the beginning, nothing is noticeable that he was tortured, no obvious bruises or the like. He did have injuries that he hid under his sleeves, but nothing outright. Considering that you learn that the man who tortured him is extremely sadistic, it was a little hard to buy that he had no outward injuries for others to notice right away. I guess it's possible that he didn't, but I didn't really buy it.

Where this book really suffered, though, was Dylan and Skeeter's relationship. There's definite chemistry between them, but I think Janzen relied a little too much on her buildup from the previous books. She just sort of jumped right into their story/relationship. I would have liked a little more lead-in, a little more of bringing them together and discovering their nuances. Aside from that, there was just something missing from the relationship somewhere along the line. It seemed as though too much of their interaction was based solely on the mission they were on, and not enough on just them together, figuring things out. Then when they did have more personal interactions, Dylan was out of his mind because of some heavy duty drugs he'd been given. And then at the end, there was this jump in progression where Dylan suddenly wants to marry Skeeter. At that point, it didn't quite fit. I wasn't feeling that they were ready for that step. There hadn't been enough to cement the relationship.

In the end, I was disappointed with the progression of Dylan and Skeeter's relationship. I mean, I did like them together, couldn't wait to read their story, and they definitely had chemistry, but their relationship throughout the book was poorly explored and rather superficial. There were things I expected, things I wanted, but Janzen didn't deliver. I couldn't help but be disappointed. It didn't ruin the book, but it kept me from absolutely loving it.

I liked Janzen's setup for the next (and last) book in the series, though, with Travis and Gillian. She gave them a good base and has made me interested in what their story will be. I'm looking forward to that book, though I wish I didn't have to wait till the fall for it to be published. And I also enjoyed the cameos from Christian, Katya, Creed and Cody. It was nice to revisit characters from the other books.

All in all, a decent book that could have been better. I liked it and I'm glad I read it, but it was lacking in areas. It didn't have that eroticism that the other books have had, and Dylan and Skeeter's relationship could have been much better. Even so, I still liked it.

Crazy Attraction

Secret Agent Dylan Hart works for the Special Defense Force, an ultra-secret agency that works out of a garage in Colorado. Stocked with muscle cars, enough weapons and munitions to take over a country, and high-tech gizmos that would make James Bond salivate, the SDF goes anywhere and does anything to preserve the United States' freedom. All his career, Dylan has weighed and measured his chances of succeeding at an assignment, shading his choices and emerging mostly unscathed. However, on his last mission he was infected with a virus NG4 (Next Generation 4) that's still in his system. Also in his system is a serious chemistry pull toward Skeeter Bang, also known affectionately as Baby Bang. She's twenty years old, and ready to rock and roll in the world of spies and counterspies, agents and double agents. And she's also ready to rock Dylan's world. Against Dylan's better judgment, he agrees to let Baby Bang go along on his latest assignment: to steal a file in Washington, DC that's going to put him in the cross hairs of an old and ruthless enemy.

Tara Janzen exploded onto the romance scene with her CRAZY books. CRAZY LOVE is the fifth in a six-book series about the SDF bad boys and the women who love them, but the novels don't have to be read in order to enjoy them.

The writing is absolutely great. Readers will be pulled along by the punchy action scenes and quick bursts of dialogue. Baby Bang's character is fully realized and played fairly with. She isn't a street urchin who becomes sophisticated along the way: she remains true to her roots. Dylan Hart also comes across as real, forced by an attraction so out of control that the normally very-much-in-control superspy is thrown into a tailspin. The other SDF agents are a welcome addition and move the story along nicely, giving a larger feel for the world that Janzen has created. This is one of those books readers can take to the beach this summer and while away an afternoon with, breathlessly turning pages filled with hot cars, blazing gun action and pulse-pounding romantic interludes.

The only drawback comes in the latter half of the book. Janzen uses her secondary characters efficiently in the first half of the novel, but they almost become intrusive in the second half. However, since those characters take center stage in the next novel, it works out well.

CRAZY LOVE is one of those quick-paced reads that fans of Gena Showalter and Nora Roberts will love. The characters are over-the-top, but real in a way that matters. Normal people wouldn't do the things SDF does, but it's nice to know that even supermen and superwomen struggle with attraction and love. The novel is a thrilling blast of suspense and action.
