Grade 4-7?Another Anastasia adventure, this time adding a new dog and a Values class for the modern 13-year-old's coping skills. During an early morning walk with Sleuth, Anastasia inadvertently deposits a bag of dog poop into the corner mailbox instead of her mother's envelope of illustrations intended for her publisher. When she later tries to correct her mistake, she discovers the mailbox has been removed. Anastasia assumes she is to blame and that she has become a federal felon. Finally gathering the courage to call the post office to admit her mistake, she learns that she not only has the information that leads to the arrest of a mail bomber, but also that the poop parcel had actually prevented the explosion of a bomb planted right before her "deposit." This effort falls short of the guffaws found in Lowry's earlier titles. The plot is pretty far-fetched and the dog-doo dilemma packs only so much humor. The Values class assignments tagged to the end of each chapter?scenarios drawn from modern life?are also a letdown. The "wishy-washy" responses from Anastasia and her family reveal neither humor nor depth of thought and are out of character from the Krupniks we have come to know. While children have come to expect more from this very talented author, the book is packed with believable dialogue and references to current groups and situations.?Claudia Cooper, Ft. Gr. 4^-6. Now an eighth-grader, Anastasia Krupnik struggles with caring for her new puppy, Sleuth, answering sticky ethical questions for her classroom "Values" assignments, and owning up to a dark deed (well, an embarrassing disclosure). Walking Sleuth early one morning, she dutifully cleans up after her dog, but absentmindedly puts the plastic bag into the mailbox instead of the trash can. When the police haul the mailbox away and start asking questions, Anastasia is alarmed. Her eventual confession and her unexpectedly keen memory lead to the arrest of a mailbox bomber. Improbable? Well, yes, but the book has its moments of humor and insight. A must-read for Anastasia's many fans. Carolyn Phelan

Review
"As usual, Lowry delivers tight, page-turning prose, plenty of humor, and characters right out of readers' neighborhoods." Kirkus Reviews

If you love funny you have to read this book!
By A Customer
I recently read the book Anastasia Absolutely By Lois Lowry. It is a book for all ages because it is very funny. It is a chapter book and the reading level is 4.5, but everyone in your family will love the book. The characters in the book are Anastasia, her dog, Mom, Dad, the police, and her little brother. Anastasia's mother tells her to take the dog for a walk and mail a very important letter to a publisher. Like most people Anastasia carries a plastic bag with her to carry her dog's dodo. When Anastasia gets to the mailbox she is not paying any attention and puts the dog's dodo in the mailbox instead of the letter to the publisher that is already a day late. Anastasia does not notice until she gets home what she has done. Obviously now she cannot go back to the mailbox and take it out. The next day on her way to school Anastasia sees the police at the mailbox. When she comes home from school the mailbox is gone. Anastasia thinks she will be arrested because what she did is a federal offense. This story takes place in the winter a few years ago. I recommend you read this book because it is a very funny book and everyone will love it. I give it 4.5 stars and one great review.

Series redeems itself
By E. S. Anderson
Lowry returns to form with in the final book in her Anastasia series. Anastasia gets a dog and mistakenly puts it's.. um... droppings in a mailbox instead of the letter she intended to mail. She feels guilty, of course, and struggles with whether to call the post office to confess. At the same time, she is taking a course in "Values' and wrestles with questions like, "If you could shave one day off the end of your life and by doing so save the life of a baby in China, would you?" Anastasia has always had an interesting perspective, and these questions really highlight that as well as induce young readers to think about what they would do in the same situation. As always, the Krupnik family are wildly entertaining as well as realistic secondary characters. I am very pleased by how this series ended up.

Absolutely amazing
By Arti
I have loved Anastasia since I was a teenager. She has stood the test of time and continues to deliver belly laughs.

At first glance these books look like light and frothy tween books but they are not. Anastasia is a delight and there is plenty for adult readers to enjoy. Laugh at Anastasia's antics and at the humiliations that come with being thirteen while you tap into your own teenage years to empathise with this adorable example of adolescent angst. Anastasia's world is without reality TV and social media but that is what makes it all the more relevant.

These books are charming, laugh-out-loud stories about growing up and family, penned by a first-class writer.

From Publishers Weekly
Although better known for her historicals and her numinous Draycott Abbey series, Skye (The Ruby; 2000 Kisses) tests the waters of the contemporary scene once again with a crowd-pleasing romantic thriller. Photographer Carly Sullivan is shooting an ad on a cruise ship, and she needs to find a replacement for a less than satisfactory male model. A workaholic and perfectionist, Carly refuses to sleep until she snags the elusive Ford McKay, a self-proclaimed Wyoming rancher who is reluctant to be captured on film. However, when McKay discovers that his mission as a Navy SEAL is to protect Carly and her friend Daphne Brandon, the daughter of Santa Marina's governor-general, he realizes that the easiest way to be near Carly is to model. A sensational encounter with an all-too-sinister Russian terrorist draws McKay and Carly closer together despite the knowledge that their commitment to their careers forbids a more lasting relationship. But as Carly and McKay grow more intimate, they realize that their time-consuming professional lives have been lacking. Skye draws her characters largely through dialogue, keeping the narrative energy high and the pacing swift. Sweetly sensual and vibrant, this light read will make for delightful springtime entertainment. (Apr. 17) Forecast: Navy SEALS have become a staple of romantic thrillers, and Skye's newest is likely to attract readers who harbor a passion for the covert operations team. A generous cover quote by Joan Johnston combined with Skye's familiar name will ensure that this novel achieves exceptional sales.

I didn't enjoy the heroine, and I wanted it to be over.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Nigel is governor of Santa Marina. He suspects bad guys may do harm to him, his daughter Daphne and her friend Carly. He hires Ford a Navy SEAL to watch over Carly, and he hires a local police chief to watch over Daphne. Carly is a photographer filming commercials on a cruise ship. The wrong model was hired, and she uses Ford as a substitute model. She doesn't know that Ford is there to watch over her. She thinks Ford is a rancher from Wyoming. Bad guys follow and shoot at Carly and Daphne. Ford is there to protect them.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
CAUTION, INCLUDES SOME SPOILERS:
This book was not "outrageous fun" as described on the cover. Nothing surprised or delighted me. I wasn't drawn to Carly and had trouble identifying with her. She lost one account doing one commercial and grieved as if her life were over. My gosh, there are other jobs out there, especially for someone as talented as she is. She also got angry too frequently and easily. Several scenes bothered me. They were too contrived and predictable to be entertaining. For example, when Carly first meets Ford, she offers him $500 for an hour's work. She says it in a way that implies she is buying sex, when in fact she needs a model for the commercial. His reaction and then her reaction creates conflict, with Carly then being angry and furiously stomping away. Another example is Carly asking him several times, who he was, why he was there, etc. Other than saying he was from Wyoming (which was true prior to joining the Navy), he just stayed silent saying nothing. Later when she guesses that he is military, she is furious saying he lied to her, and stomps away. The way I see it, he never lied, he just never told. This was conflict due to her inaccurate assumptions. I don't enjoy this type of conflict. I was also annoyed that Carly went to the kidnappers all alone with no weapons or tracking devices, thinking she could help, but all she did was get kidnapped as well. This is stupidity. Aside from Carly, I was a little confused about the bad guys. By the end of the book, I still didn't know much about what they were planning. I would have liked a few more details about that. Other parts of the story were ok. Ford was good.

DATA:
Story length: 342 pages. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 3. Length of sex scenes: 0.4, 1.9 and 3.4 pages. Total number of sex scene pages: 5.7. Setting: current day mostly in the Caribbean, with a little in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Copyright: 2001. Genre: contemporary romance with some suspense.

Another Winner !
By MaryannJr
I fell for Christina Skye after '2000 Kisses' so I bought 'Going Overboard' automatically. I knew it was a book I would read and enjoy... and boy, was I right ! Ms. Skye's charactres always seem SO vibrant and real, you almost feel like you could pick up the phone and call them. In 'Overboard', Carly and Mc Kay were no exception. Carly is the workaholic photographer haunted by the similarities to her deceased mother that she is only now discovering in herself. Mc Kay is the too-gorgeous-to-be-true hunk who bails her out of a jam professionally, and then risks his life to protect her when some slimey Russians take greed and revenge too far. Of course, being a Navy SEAL helps.
As usual, the course of true love is anything but smooth, and the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a dangerous swirl of murder and deception. Basically, this book has everything. Looking for romance? Got it. Mystery? Check. Side-splitting dialogue and sharp witted sexual tension? Bingo.
This book is everything we buy romantic suspense for. Don't wait. Click on the 'order' icon now. You won't regret it.
Note to Ms. Skye . . . any chance of catching up with Daphne Brandon in future books ?We would love to see wht her future holds =:)

Loved it!
By Ginger L. Savage
I was thrilled at the release of Going Overboard. This sweet and suspenseful book was loaded with lots of heat. Carly Sullivan is out to find the perfect man for the perfect commercial. She finds Ford McKay, Navy SEAL, who has been sent to protect her. Sparks fly. The story was nicely paced and the characters were well written. I wish Ms. Skye would have instensified the ending a tad. Ford's fear of the future could have been more poignant. (Julia Quinn's Duke and I, has changed how I view romance heroes!) The epilogue was sweet and left me wanting more. Ok, Ms. Skye, how about one big last bash at Draycott Abbey?

Hallowed Bones, by Carolyn Haines

The southern Delta has never been more exhilarating, evocative, and wickedly funny than in the mysteries of Carolyn Haines. Now she takes readers on another rollicking ride across the Mississippi cotton fields and into the glamour of New Orleans…as P.I. Sarah Booth Delaney follows a winding trail of murder and deception into a world where ghosts make fashion statements—and where one person’s miracle is another person’s mayhem.

The leaves of the calendar may be shedding faster than the sycamores on her family’s decaying Mississippi plantation, but thirty-something southern belle Sarah Booth Delaney isn’t ready to sing the blues. Not when she’s got a thriving detective agency and the outspoken, outrageously attired ghost of her great-great-grandmother’s nanny to keep her on her toes. But the matchmaking phantom may have the last word on motherhood when Sarah Booth takes on the controversial case of an accused baby killer.

Although Doreen Mallory’s been arrested for feeding sleeping pills to her ten-week-old daughter, no one could accuse her of lacking faith. A healer who, tragically, couldn’t save her own baby girl, born with multiple birth defects, Doreen has her own crosses to bear. While the local law seems convinced of Doreen’s guilt, Sarah Booth isn’t so sure. But why is Doreen reluctant to talk about the men in her life? Like the televangelist who stands to lose a lot more than his flock. Or the married politician with family ties to the Mob. Either of them could be little Rebekah’s father; either of them could also be her killer.

With Halloween approaching and her own personal life up for grabs, Sarah Booth could use a little faith healing herself. Torn between a married sheriff and an old flame who’s literally sweeping her off her feet, she’d better be prepared for the fallout of her most
unpopular case yet. Justice may not stand a ghost of a chance as a decades-old secret explodes, unleashing a storm of fury on Sarah Booth and all those she loves.

Witty, suspenseful, and featuring a cast of memorable characters, Hallowed Bones is a riveting tale of faith, murder, and maternal love. It is Carolyn Haines’s most accomplished novel yet.

From Publishers Weekly
Amour and a murder make this Mississippi Delta whodunit from Haines (Crossed Bones, etc.) sure to please. Since PI Sarah Booth Delaney's most spiritual aspect is her live-in ghost, it's more than surprising when a nun hires her to help a "healer" who was raised in the sister's orphanage. Doreen Mallory, tarot card reader, charismatic teacher and object of a large following's devotion, sits in a New Orleans jail cell, accused of murdering her baby. Was it a case of "if you can't heal 'em, kill 'em," or was someone else responsible for the crime? Sarah Booth's associate Tinkie Richmond joins the hunt, and the two set off for the Crescent City, intent on finding the truth. The trail forces Sarah Booth into close quarters with Sheriff Coleman Peters, whose almost-indiscretion with the Southern belle turned detective has left them both wondering what might have been, barring Coleman's wife's first dibs on the lawman. But, par for the course, it's either feast or famine in Sarah Booth's love life, so re-enter her former flame, Hamilton Garrett. Between her own problems and delving into an impressive trio of could-be sperm donors for Doreen's daughter, a number of reasons for wanting the child dead reach the surface. The twists and turns take the reader through the labyrinth of the charming French Quarter and into the settings of high and low society. When the dots are connected, the conclusion is both clever and impressive.

From Booklist
The newly formed Delaney Detective Agency of Zinnia, Mississippi, consisting of southern belles Sarah Booth Delaney and her friend Tinkie Richmond, is hired by Sister Mary Magdalen to prove miracle worker Doreen Mallory didn't murder her infant daughter as charged. Doreen denies she placed the sleeping pills in her severely handicapped infant's bottle, so Sarah Booth and Tinkie investigate Rebekah's three possible fathers: a married politician, a well-known televangelist, and the man who handles Doreen's accounts, although all deny being the baby's father. While working on the case, Sarah Booth must also deal with two additional issues: her feelings for the married Sheriff Coleman Peters, whom she loves but whose wife has deliberately become pregnant to keep from losing him, and her concern that Tinkie may have breast cancer. Sarah Booth makes an endearing heroine, and her first-person narration draws readers close to her. Jitty, the ghost of Sarah Booth's great-great-grandmother's nanny, adds humor to this story of faith and hope, the fifth in the series. Sue O'Brien

Praise for Carolyn Haines' mysteries:

By George Jude Resh
Adequate writing and entertaining story but several major errors in the geography of New Orleans that make the story less believable and that can confuse the reader. Ridiculous errors that could have been eliminated simply by referencing a city map. For example: Rampart Street in not next to the Café du Monde. Such errors should have been corrected before the book was published. This was disappointing since similar details in other books by Carolyn Haines have been accurate.

Another good Sarah Booth novel
By Moe811
In the latest installment of this series, Sarah Booth and Tinkie are hired by a nun to prove that a faith healer didn't murder her handicapped illegitimate daughter. Not as simple as it looks. The healer Doreen, is the daughter of a deceased religous fanatic, who lived in Zinnia until her death in a fire 12 years before. There are many intertwining plot lines, much like Sarah Booth's love life. Coleman is still sort of in the picture, with his manipulative wife pulling his strings and Hamilton returns with the intention of taking Sarah Booth back to Paris with him. Aunt Jitty doesn't play as big a part in this one as the others, but CeCe and Tinkie really make up the difference. I hope the next one comes out quickly.

McDougal Littell Library: Skirt; The Middle School, by HOLT MCDOUGAL

For fans of Gary Soto and Matt de la Peña comes a tale of a contemporary Mexican-American family with a "spunky and imaginative heroine" (Publishers Weekly).

The skirt is gone. Miata Ramirez is scared and upset. She brought her forklorico skirt to show off at school and left it on the bus. It’s not just any skirt. This skirt belonged to Miata’s mother when she was a child in Mexico. On Sunday, Miata and her dance group are going to dance forklorico. It’s Friday afternoon. Miata doesn’ t want her parents to know she’s lost something again. Can she find a way to rescue the precious skirt in time?

Includes an afterword from the author.

"A light, engaging narrative that successfully combines information on Hispanic culture with familiar and recognizable childhood themes....A fine read-aloud and discussion starter, this story blends cultural differences with human similarities to create both interest and understanding."-SLJ

“Light, easy reading . . . offering readers a cast and situations with which to identify, whatever their own ethnic origins.”—The Bulletin

"Soto's light tale offers a pleasant blend of family ties, friendship and ethnic pride...[and Miata is] a spunky and imaginative heroine."-Publishers Weekly

Described by PW as a "spunky and imaginative" heroine, Miata comes up with a clever plan to retrieve her beloved folklorico dance skirt. Ages 7-10.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- Miata Ramirez has a problem that will strike a chord with many children: she forgets things. This particular Friday afternoon, she has left her folkl orico skirt on the school bus, and she is supposed to dance in it on Sunday. She sees no alternative but to break into the bus and retrieve it. So, dragging along her shy friend, Ana, that is exactly what she does. This is a light, engaging narrative that successfully combines information on Hispanic culture with familiar and recognizable childhood themes. The San Joaquin Valley, California, setting is realistically drawn, and the closeness of Miata's family is reassuring. A fine read-aloud and discussion starter, this story blends cultural differences with human similarities to create both interest and understanding. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent,

Excellent for Classroom!
By Charis Beal
If you know Soto's work, then you can rest assured this is another excellent example of the magic he creates with the written word. The Hispanic family is representative of the culture and values. Fifth graders (even though the reading level is lower) in my classroom, and especially my ESL students, enjoy the book. Soto has packed the book with colorful similies and this lends well for Writing Worshop.

beautiful story
By Bobbie
This is a beautiful story about the value of friendships, family and traditions. Children and adults will enjoy the story, especially how Miata finds a way to keep the old to honor her mother and embrace what is new. The book can inspire great conversation.

Most useful thesaurus ever!
By Brandy Whitten
As a professional editor and non-traditional college student (English major), I frequently need a thesaurus to select the most precise terms for a wide variety of applications. This particular thesaurus is excellent. It is broad in scope and the Concept Index is a fantastic tool that I have used again and again. I had a previous edition and ordered the third as soon as I saw that it was out. (My husband is also a writer and we had been stealing it from each other. Now we each have one and I'm ordering another for my desk at work.) Keep in mind that a thesaurus is best used to find words that you already know. Don't use it to sound fancy - if you aren't sure of the exact definition of a word, look it up in a good dictionary or use another word. One more caveat: the font size in the mass market edition is extremely small. Happy Hunting!

Don the Baptist
By Don the Baptist
A review by Don the Baptist of “Roget’s 21st Century Thesaurus”. Third Edition. While I usually do not write book reviews without reading the text in its entirety, this is an exception to said rule.

As this is my first thesaurus, the only thing I can compare it to is the thesaurus “built-in” to Microsoft Word. This being the case, I would rank it roughly equal with its competition. To be clear, this means that sometimes, Roget’s offers additional help, and on other occasions, Word is the preferred source.

Nonetheless, this is not a critique; I am satisfied with my purchase, but I still might buy a bigger one at some point in the future.

Very good thesaurus content with the print size too small.
By DES
A Roget's Thesaurus published in 2005. A good reference book but the font size is frustratingly small. My old eyes need reading glasses & further magnification to be able to read. Lots of entries but it would have earned five stars if the font size and book dimensions were larger.

Fifth-grader Andy Moller will do anything to win the Roger B. Sudermann essay contest so that he can win fifty dollars and get his picture in the local newspaper. His cousin and rival, Jack, feels exactly the same way. But how can Andy be inventive and imaginative in an essay contest on conservation?

Bugs and beetles, that's how. Leave it to Andy to think of people eating insects as a way of conserving their food budgets. Before long he's preparing toasted beetles in brownies, mealworm-filled egg salad sandwiches, and batter-fried earthworms for his friends and family. They don't know what they're in for, and neither does Andy. Will he win the contest and lose his friends and family?

From Publishers Weekly
Andy wants to win the annual fifth grade essay contest and get his picture in the local paper more than anything in the world. He thinks he has a pretty good chance, even though his ancient rival, his cousin Jack, will be competing for it, too. The class boycotts the contest when the essay subject is announced: conservation. But Jack's mysterious experiment involving hamburgers in a car engine galvanizes Andy, who comes up with an essay entitled "How Beetles, Bugs, and Worms Can Save Money and the Food Supply, Both." How? By eating themAndy discovers ways of preparing the critters, using family and friends as unknowing tasters, but not daring to taste them himself. This fast-paced novel, with its likable protagonist and strongly evoked rural Iowa farm setting will remind readers of Thomas Rockwell's How to Eat Fried Worms. But the family of black characters, described as having "skin the color of gravy," emerges as tired stereotypes. They run a soul-food restaurant and eat fried chicken, catfish and hush puppies; the kids slap each other's hands and say, "Hey, man, gimme five!" and "All right!" and they tend to drop verbs, as in "How you doing?" Though the interracial friendship between Andy and Sam is well-intentioned and serves as a positive element in the story, Sam the character is merely one-dimensional, a collage of hackneyed cliches. And such disappointment is hard to ignore, coming from the notable author. Ages 9-11.

A Cinderella story with a compelling culinary twist, Thomas's scrumptious Victorian confection (after Private Arrangements) proves impossible to resist. Madame Verity Durant works for Bertram Bertie Somerset at his estate, Fairleigh Park—after serving as the mistress he failed to marry (due to a questionable background that includes an illegitimate child). When Bertie dies unexpectedly at 38, Verity worries as Bertie's bastard-born brother, Stuart—now London's foremost barrister —takes over the estate. Verity had shared a secret, mouthwatering affair with Stuart 10 years earlier, and she doesn't expect him to keep her on, especially since he's affianced to the very proper Miss Lizzy Bessler. What ensues, however, is happiness on a plate, as Thomas shows that hunger for passion, and madeleines, never dies. (Aug.)

About the Author
Sherry Thomas burst onto the romance scene with Private Arrangements, one of the most anticipated debut historical romances in recent history and a Publishers Weekly Best of the Year book. Lisa Kleypas calls her “the most powerfully original historical romance author working today.” Her books have received stellar reviews from Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Chicago Tribune, and Romantic Times, along with enthusiastic praises from many of the most highly trafficked romance review websites and blogs.

Her story is all the more interesting given that English is Sherry's second language—she has come a long way from the days when she made her laborious way through Rosemary Roger's Sweet Savage Love with an English-Chinese dictionary. She enjoys creating stories. And when she is not writing, she thinks about the zen and zaniness of her profession, plays computer games with her sons, and reads as many fabulous books as she can find.

Four stars, but with reservations due to dumb plot devices
By Dee
* Some Plot Spoilers *
I enjoyed the romance of Stuart and Verity, but hated the ending with the Dowager Duchess. The reader is supposed to believe that this woman who terrorized her niece, Verity for years, was only trying to look out for her? Not offering her a scrap of help, only contacting her in order to blackmail her by intimidation--that's family love?? You could tell that a woman like that could have easily helped her niece without her husband knowing about it. What she did was absolutely evil, and the reasons given are preposterous!! What she did to Verity would have made some sense (based on wanting to avoid family scandal), if her character had actually been as malevolent as she seemed to be. And Stuart, how much dumber could his character be that he couldn't recognize the woman he loves, over and over, especially since she never gave him a valid reason why he couldn't look at her. Also, the reason Stuart believed he couldn't marry before hadn't changed, so why did he suddenly think that it was OK to marry Verity when talking to the Duchess? The book would have been so much better just letting the Duchess be as evil as she obviously appeared to be and not having Stuart be so dense. The author suspended logic too much, IMHO. And how would they explain Verity/Vera's resurrection from the dead, they buried her after all!? However, overall it was still a good read until the ending. Having said all that, Sherry Thomas really is an exceptional writer--I could almost taste the food from reading the descriptions. She just needs to work on her plot devices a little more.

Love in the cuisine
By raven
Although I think the twists in the book are quite predictable, but all in all it is very smooth writing, and it is really touched to read about the love between generations.

A couple is miserable and apart for most of the book. Too many lies and secrets for illogical reasons.
By Jane
Story Brief:
Verity is a lady who for unknown reasons has run away from her family. She keeps her identity a secret and works as a cook for Bertie. Her cooking skills are famous in England. She and Bertie have a brief love affair which ends. She goes to London to meet Bertie's brother Stuart. She does not tell Stuart her name or connection to Bertie. She leaves the next day, and he can't find her. She continues to cook for Bertie. Ten years later Bertie dies. Stuart inherits and arrives at Bertie's home. Stuart doesn't recognize Verity, but starts to develop feelings for her.

Reviewer's Opinion:
I wanted it to be over. During most of the book the couple is miserable and apart. They meet, fall immediately in love, he asks her to marry him, she runs away. Ten years later they meet again but cannot be together because he is engaged to another woman. Finally, during the last few pages of the book, they are happy together. I don't like spending most of the book being miserable and sad. Most romance novels spend more time with couple meeting and developing an emotional connection, with a short separation period. Not so with this book. Most of the book is separation.

I was pleased with and enjoyed the relationship between Will and Lizzy. There were some surprises, and I liked what was happening with them. The more I read, the more I liked Will's character and what he did. It's too bad that it was a minor subplot, because it was the best part of the book. Initially, Will didn't tell Lizzy about his potential inheritance. When she learned about it later and confronted Will, the reasons he gave her were good. I liked his reasons and was a little surprised by them. Well done author.

CAUTION SPOILERS:

A major problem with this book was too many conflicts based on inaccurate assumptions and vague communication (my pet peeve). The major plot conflict was Verity leaving her wealthy family and working as a cook. Verity was pregnant. Her Aunt told her she would be locked away for the rest of her life. The Aunt didn't mean it but was trying to scare Verity into better behavior in the future. Verity believed the Aunt's threat and ran away. The Aunt lies to her husband and says Verity died. Later when the Aunt learns where Verity is, the Aunt doesn't make things right, because she believes her husband will be mad at her for lying about Verity's death. Therefore, the Aunt monitors Verity from afar for the next ten plus years. When Stuart tells the Aunt he loves Verity and wants to marry her, the Aunt is happy to accept Verity back into the family and sponsors a big wedding for her. What??? After years of watching Verity suffer, the Aunt makes things nice? I also don't understand why Verity felt the need to keep her relationship to the Aunt a secret. This was too "cooked up" for me. I want something more believable.

Another miscommunication was Verity's lie to Michael for years, which was due to a promise made to Mrs. Robbins. Mrs. Robbins adopted Michael. A few years later Verity arrives to live nearby, and Mrs. Robbins is afraid Verity will take Michael away. Verity tells her no, that she just wants to be around him. Verity promises not to tell Michael that she is his biological mother. I think Verity and Mrs. Robbins could have and should have come to an agreement to tell Michael the truth much sooner than they did. Michael had guessed the truth long before it was told to him. Finally, Verity tells Michael that she is his biological mother, but she doesn't tell him who his grandparents are. This continued lie annoyed me.

Further, I didn't like Verity's lies to Stuart. When they first meet, he asks her to marry him. She is not honest about who she is and runs away. Ten years later, he asks her to marry him again. The same secrets exist, but she says yes this time. Her turnabout didn't make sense, her circumstances hadn't changed. I prefer true intrigue, not this keeping of secrets for illogical reasons. Also, why did she hide from Stuart for ten years? She loved him. If she was going to do this turnabout, why did it have to be so many years later? This was unfulfilling.

Story length: 404 pages. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 7. Length of sex scenes: 1 short scene (1 paragraph) and 6 long scenes (1.6 to 6.9 pages). Total number of sex scene pages: 25. Setting 1882 and 1892 England. Copyright: 2008. Genre: historical romance.

Amazon.com Review
Karin Slaughter on Broken

For me, every novel begins with character rather than plot. I know something bad is going to happen, but the central question to every story I write is "how will my characters respond?" Over the years, I’ve certainly thrown some hard times at my Grant County characters. Jeffrey, Sara and Lena have changed a lot since Blindsighted, my first novel. They’ve seen hardship and adversity, grown together and grown apart. They have helped me explore the way crime can change not just people, but entire communities.

When I started writing about Will Trent in my Atlanta series, I wanted to take that exploration a step farther. As a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Will is generally called in when the local police either can’t handle or don’t want to deal with a case. Not only does he have to find the bad guy, he has to juggle the various egos already involved. This is certainly the situation in Broken, when Will is called into Grant County to investigate a possible suicide in police custody. He butts heads with Lena Adams and Frank Wallace, and uncovers a truth that most in the town do not want to see.

Bringing Will Trent into Sara Linton’s world was a fun challenge for me. With Undone, it was in many ways easy to put Sara in Atlanta. I live in the city, and the landscape is already painted for me. As a writer, I need only draw in the fine lines. Dropping Will into Grant County was a different challenge altogether. To work with an existing world that has developed over the course of eight books, to find new and interesting details for long-time readers, was a thrilling challenge to me. Finding a case that was as gripping as it was challenging was also an exciting rollercoaster ride. I hope my readers enjoy solving the crime--and watching the characters change along with it--as much as I did.

Starred Review. Slaughter brings her Grant County and Atlanta characters together for a second time (after Undone) in this superb thriller. When Dr. Sara Linton returns home to Grant County, Ga., for Thanksgiving, she hopes to steer clear of the police, especially Det. Lena Adams, whom she blames for the murder of her husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. Yet when college student Allison Spooner is found dead in a lake and a local boy, Tommy Braham, is arrested for the murder, Sara reluctantly agrees to consult. The investigation soon spirals out of control after Tommy dies in custody. When Sara calls in Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent Will Trent from Atlanta to take over the case, the local police greet Will's arrival with suspicion. Will must weigh Sara's personal vendetta against Detective Adams with the facts of the case, which grow more confusing the deeper he digs into the small county's secrets. Slaughter keeps the emotional tension high throughout.

From Booklist
It has been three and a half years since pediatrician and former Grant County, Georgia, coroner Sara Linton has been home. That’s when she lost her husband, the town’s much beloved police chief. Things have only gone downhill in that department since Jeffrey Tolliver died. Officer Lena Adams is getting sick of turning a blind eye to her new boss’ alcoholism and the department’s increasing willingness to stray from the rule book. When a mentally disabled murder suspect commits suicide in a jail cell, Sara, convinced that a mishandled interrogation led the boy to take his own life, calls in Special Agent Will Trent. She also sees it as a perfect way to get back at Lena, whom she blames for her husband’s death. But what the investigation reveals is that the town’s poorest and most hardworking citizens are also the ones most likely to be exploited. With its relentlessly grim depiction of the desperate circumstances of those trapped by deep-seated poverty, Slaughter’s latest entry in her series overlays the standard police procedural with a burning sense of social justice. --Joanne Wilkinson

"None of this makes sense."
By E. Bukowsky
Karin Slaughter brings together some of her most memorable characters in "Broken," her latest thriller. Twenty-one year old Allison Spooner is at the end of her rope. She is short of money, her boyfriend has disappointed her, and her rusted-out hulk of a car is on its last legs. She is struggling to keep up with her college classes at Georgia's Grant Tech while earning a pittance as a waitress in a diner. Sadly, her dream of escaping her tedious life is shattered when an unknown assailant attacks and kills her.

Lena Adams, the senior detective on call, is summoned to the scene. At first, it appears that Spooner may have killed herself, but new evidence points to murder. Lena's boss, interim chief of police Frank Wallace, is not much help. He has been drinking heavily, and his mind is clearly elsewhere. When Wallace, Adams, and Detective Brad Stephens travel to the address where the victim allegedly lived, they discover a possible suspect. What follows is a series of blunders that lead to disaster both for the person taken into custody and the cops who arrest him.

To make matters more complicated, Dr. Sara Linton, who is a pediatrician, medical examiner, and the widow of the former police chief, Jeffrey Tolliver, is visiting her family for Thanksgiving. Sara despises Lena, whom she blames for her late husband's death, and would prefer never to lay eyes on the detective ever again. She acidly tell someone that Lena is "never held accountable for anything. She always manages to slither back under her rock." When Special Agent Will Trent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assigned to look into Allison Spooner's death, he teams up with Sara, whose expertise proves to be invaluable.

"Broken" is an exciting, suspenseful, and poignant tale that shows how people sow the seeds of their own destruction. They withhold vital information, try to cover up their mistakes, and shift blame to others. What results is a needless waste of lives and resources. Sara and Will both have inner demons to contend with, but as they get to know one another, they open up a bit and form a tenuous connection.

Slaughter is a terrific storyteller. The plot is well-constructed and involving, her dialogue is realistic, and the author captures the feeling of life in a small Georgia town where people know everyone else's business and cling tightly to their prejudices and pettiness. The characters are generally well-delineated: Dr. Sara Linton is still in mourning for her husband, although he has been gone for four years; Lena Adams has committed her share of screw-ups, but has always been too stubborn to admit her culpability; Will Grant is a good-hearted man and an excellent detective but he is hiding a secret that, if revealed, may affect his future in the Bureau; Frank Wallace, after thirty-five years on the force, is an alcoholic who no longer has what it takes to function on the job. This is a fast-moving story that falters a bit during the final formulaic confrontation. In general, however, "Broken" works, because Karin Slaughter's compassion for her characters shines through. She depicts them as three-dimensional human beings, warts and all, most of whom would like to fix what is broken in their lives. Unfortunately, not everyone has the courage, honesty, and motivation to face the truth and take the necessary steps to rectify what is wrong.

Grant County is Broken
By Dr Beverly R Vincent
Dr. Sara Linton is in Heartsdale, Georgia visiting her family for Thanksgiving. Being back home from Atlanta stirs up conflicted emotions. The wound of her dead husband, Heartsdale's former police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, is still fresh. She blames Detective Lena Adams for creating the circumstances that lead to his murder four years earlier.

A homicide ruins Sara's plans to keep a low profile while in town. Someone tried to make the murder of a female college student look like a suicide, but Lena turns up clues that reveal a different story. The evidence leads Sara, interim chief Frank Wallace and rookie officer Brad Stephens to the student's garage apartment, where they surprise Tommy Braham.

A lot of things are broken in Grant County, including the local police department. Wallace is a raging drunk. Tommy's arrest was a catastrophe of epic proportions and the confession Lena obtained was probably coerced. Tommy has a low IQ and is highly suggestible. The case probably won't stand up in court, and that was before someone started tampering with the evidence.

In custody, Tommy plunges into depression and begs to see Sara, who used to be his pediatrician. By the time she gets to the jail, Tommy has killed himself. Rather than going through channels, Sara reaches out directly to GBI agent Will Trent to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tommy's death. Sara sees the situation as a chance to exact her revenge revenge on Lena.

Will knows he won't be welcomed with open arms, and he's right. The local police dig in their heels, hide evidence and generally refuse to cooperate with his investigation. To make matters worse, he ends up staying at Sara's domineering mother's house, leading to rumors that he's sleeping with Sara. He has a complicated relationship with his wife back in Atlanta, but that's not the worst of his problems. He has severe dysgraphia, which makes it virtually impossible for him to read anything. Sara is quick to diagnose his problem, which leads to tension between them.

While characters with afflictions can be interesting, readers may find it difficult to accept that someone with such a severe handicap could escape detection by his coworkers and superiors. It's also hard to fathom how he could have progressed through the ranks. Surely his job and advancements would require copious paperwork, written reports, and written examinations. Will reminisces about how his wife helped cover for him, but that stretches credibility to the limit. Vital evidence often comes before him in written form. Delays in interpreting that material could torpedo cases. He even has trouble following directions, so how does he make it to crime scenes?

There is a lot of history among the characters, much of which comes from Slaughter's previous novels; however, she does a good job of filling in the history for readers who haven't read the earlier books. At times, the conflict feels a touch melodramatic and it's hard to like the characters very much. Lena, at least, begins to lighten up once she realizes that Will has figured out how badly she screwed things up. She achieves a kind of peace in acknowledging that her career may be over. She starts working the case with a diligence she previously lacked.

The resolution of the crime comes out of left field, though. There are clues to the motivation behind the murders, but they're very subtle, and some readers my feel like Slaughter has been stingy. The killings are more brutal than the motive would seem to explain.

Also, people make much of the fact that everyone in tiny Heartsdale knows everyone else's business and yet Lena's relationship manages to remain secret and another important character returns to the area without anyone noticing.

A Spellbinding Thriller from a Best Selling Author
By Tom McGee
What a great feeling it is to discover another great author! This is the first book that I have read by Karin Slaughter, but certainly not my last!

I had a tough time putting this book down. An outstanding story teller, Karin Slaughter knows how to keep a reader spellbound and on the edge of his seat frantically turning pages.

The story begins with Georgia Grant Tech College Student Allison Spooner's surprising murder at a lake in Heartland as she contemplates suicide mourning her breakup with her boyfriend Jason Howell.

Likeable, mentally disabled Tommy Braham is the prime suspect after he runs from what is believed to be the scene of the murder and accidentally stabs police detective Brad Stevens in the stomach with a letter opener. His confession and subsequent suicide seals the deal for arresting officer Senior Detective Lena Adams.

Lena, as policewoman thought to be overzealous, having a problem with following proper police protocol and a propensity of bending the truth is protected by her alcoholic Acting Chief of Police Frank Wallace who has dark secrets and skeletons in his own closet.

Coming home from Alabama for Thanksgiving, former County Coroner and Hartsdale Children's Clinic Director Dr. Sara Linton, wife of Jeffery Tolliver, murdered former Grant County Police Chief blames Lena for his death and becomes involved in the case with an agenda to make Lena pay for her transgressions.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Will Trent is called to investigate the murder following, Acting Chief of Police Frank Wallace and Senior Detective Lena Adam's apparent dubious and obstructive behavior in the case.

With the murder of Allison Spooner's boy friend Jason Howell after Tommy's death, his involvement in the murder is dispelled.

Slaughter keeps the reader involved as the story evolves and the killer's motive comes to light while putting main characters lives in jeopardy.

I enjoyed this thriller from beginning to end and can hardly wait to read more from this excellent writer and fabulous story teller.
