About the Author
Lois Duncan modeled the main character in HOTEL FOR DOGS after her childhood self. Like Andi, Lois knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer and started submitting stories to magazines when she was ten. Today she is the author of 50 books, most of them for young people. She lives in Sarasota, Florida, with her husband, and can be found online at http://loisduncan.arquettes.com/.

From AudioFile
The Walkers must move across country to live with Aunt Alice for the school year, leaving behind Andi's beloved dog, Bebe. Since the new neighborhood is awash in stray dogs of all kinds, what can lonely kids do but welcome them to the empty house down the street? Kellgren's pacing is perfect for enhancing the humor laced throughout as the children struggle to keep their enterprise a secret. She reflects the story's wide range of emotions--from excitement and enthusiasm as the kids build "the hotel staff" with new friends to the miseries that accompany a move to a new community. With the quavery voice of Aunt Alice and the bright sopranos of the children, Kellgren propels listeners to the satisfying ending. R.H.H. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Kids love dog books!
By C. Thomka
As a middle school librarian, I can attest to the fact that kids love dog books! Currently two of the most popular books in the school library are "Hotel for Dogs" and "Marley and Me". I can't keep copies of the books in the library, and of course that is always a good thing. What a testament to perennial teen suspense author, Lois Duncan, that more than 3 decades after "Hotel for Dogs" was first published a Hollywood movie producer fondly remembered the book and decided to make it into a movie. I heard Lois Duncan speak at a conference in November 2008, and she related the story of her agent peddling her suspense novels to movie studios. What a surprise to both her and her agent when one producer asked if she was the same author of the dog book he loved as a child. So Lois proceeded to update the book, adding cellphones for the kids and jobs/careers for the mothers in the story. It is a fun book with lots of interesting characters that kids can relate to. There is a good mix of humor and adventure, and students always love books where the kids in the story are smart and can outwit adults. A good book to recommend to middle grade and younger readers, especially reluctant readers because it is a short book and not a difficult read.

Two paws up!
By Erika Sorocco
Andi Walker isn't your typical ten-year-old. One, she'd rather spend the day holed up in her bedroom writing poetry than waste time playing outside. Two, her mind is constantly buzzing away with fantastic ideas and schemes. Three, she's dedicated to her dog Bebe, and would do anything for the lovable pooch. Which is why she completely blows her top when she learns that not only is she being forced to move in with her Aunt Alice, and change schools, but she'll have to leave little Bebe behind, as well - all so her father can try out a new job. Just because Bebe is back home, however, doesn't mean that Andi is going to deny her love of dogs. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Andi doesn't intentionally bring a dog back to Aunt Alice's house. She knows the rules that her parents have put in place - no dogs because Aunt Alice is allergic. Fine. But when a cute little stray follows Andi home one day, and promptly lets herself into the house Andi just knows that she can't simply turn the little pooch away. Especially not after she has a litter of puppies in one of the upstairs closets. No, it is up to Andi to protect the dog, and her family; so she enlists the help of her older brother Bruce. With Bruce by her side, Andi is able to set up a makeshift hotel for the stray in an abandoned house located right down the street. But then more and more guests begin to turn up. First there's Red Rover, an Irish Setter who is big, beautiful, and treated cruelly by his stuck-up owner. When he finally makes a break for it, Bruce and Andi are convinced that the only safe place for him is the new hotel for dogs. Then there's sweet MacTavish - a mutt who spends his days begging for scraps in the school playground. Before they know it, the house is overflowing with hungry dogs. It's an overwhelming predicament, but Andi is secretly thrilled. Finally she has found a fun way to spend her often lonely days - running a dog hotel. But then things begin to go awry and Andi wonders if she and Bruce will be able to keep the hotel for dogs a secret, or if they'll have to close its doors forever.

I read Lois Duncan's young adult books for years, and had no idea that she had ever written anything for children until I stumbled upon HOTEL FOR DOGS. I am so glad that I finally discovered this, because I have quickly grown to love it. Even as a reader in my early twenties, I have found that I was able to easily identify with the main character Andi. She is such a relatable person, whose kind heart, bookish nature, and oft-times tough exterior is fun from the first page to the very last. Anyone who loves animals will easily fall head over heels with HOTEL FOR DOGS. Two paws up!

Light Years, by Tammar Stein

He went to school to learn how to kill me. The Israeli girl who ruined his life. Seven people were killed instead. A single mother of two. A computer programmer. Two college students. A grandmother and her four-year-old grandson sharing an ice cream. And Dov, my boyfriend, my heart, the man I wanted to marry, who was there waiting for me.

Maya leaves Israel to study astronomy at the University of Virginia, running from the violence, guilt, and memories of her past. As the narrative switches between Virginia and Israel, we learn about Maya’s life as a soldier, her ambiguous devotion to Israel, and her love for her boyfriend, Dov, who is tragically killed in a suicide bombing. Now, in Virginia, amid the day-to-day pressures of classes, roommates, and fraternity parties, Maya attempts to reconcile her Israeli past with her American future.

Grade 9 Up - Haunted by the death of her boyfriend, a victim in a suicide bombing for which she feels responsible, Maya Laor struggles through her first year of astronomy studies at the University of Virginia. She misses Israel and her family and desperately tries to avoid connecting with anyone, including the handsome TA, Justin Case, who is working hard to get to know her. In chapters alternating between the Virginia present and her Israeli past, 20-year-old Maya tells her own story. She marvels at the unconscious privilege and seemingly unfounded fears of her college classmates, and remembers the excitement of her military service and her first love affair. These two cultures are light years apart. When her habit of running alone leads to a broken ankle, she realizes that she has made good friends who care about her and whom she cares about. This well-paced first novel, a moving study of grief and recovery, is also a love story that should appeal particularly to students interested in other ways of seeing the world and looking forward to their own college lives. - Kathleen Isaacs, Edmund Burke School, Washington, DC

From Booklist
Gr. 8-12. Maya, 20, blames herself for the death of her boyfriend, who is killed by a suicide bomber in a Tel Aviv restaurant. Haunted by grief and guilt, she leaves Israel for college in the U.S., but although she makes friends, studies, and even begins to fall in love and have sex again, she can't forget. The first-person narrative moves eloquently back and forth between Maya's American present and her Israeli past: growing up in Israel, serving in the army, working in a Tel Aviv office, falling in love, and finally, losing someone in a shocking bombing. Most characters in this novel, one of the first about a contemporary Israeli young woman in a high-tech, secular world, are drawn with some complexity. Maya's "healing" seems a little preachy, but there's depth to her character: she's needy and angry, sarcastic and warm. She also loves her country, yet she doesn't talk politics. Though she considers the Palestinians as "those" people over the border ("They hated us"), she doesn't always focus on herself as living in a war-torn place. Of course, one book isn't enough to tell the whole story of the Middle East, so recommend this with books listed in the accompanying Read-alikes column, which speak from the diverse viewpoints of young Arabs and Jews caught up in the violence. moving tale of courage
By Susan B. Frost
Stein's emotionally charged tale of survival and recovery is accessible and touching to any reader. No reason to limit its readership to the "young adult" category; anyone can identify with the emotional journey of the young woman who is the main character because the book astutely brings the reader along on the journey.

A Tale of Love and Sorrow
By A. Frederick
Maya Laor is a young Israeli girl who is excited to be starting her first assignment in the army. She meets a handsome officer named Dov and they begin a heady romance. When a bombing in Tel Aviv tears them apart forever, Maya escapes the terror and moves to Virginia to attend the university. Although she hopes to find peace in this new landscape, she discovers that the daily routine of classes and college life force her to recognize what she lost back home.

Told in a series of flashbacks, Maya's past in Israel is interspersed with her present in America. It's a captivating look at one side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It's also a glimpse into the difficulties of living in a new culture. This well-crafted story might appeal to older young adults or anyone interested in fiction about Israel or Palestine.

This book was just incredible. The imagery drew you in and the storyline made it a real page turner-I felt like this is a book my daughter should definitely be reading someday. This author is obviously an up and coming talent and I cannot wait to read what she writes next (hopefully we won't have to wait too long!)

Gary Paulsen has owned dozens of unforgettable and amazing dogs. In each chapter he tells of one special dog, among them Cookie, the sled dog who saved his life; Snowball, the puppy he owned as a boy in the Philippines; Ike, his mysterious hunting companion; Dirk, the grim protector; and his true friend Josh, a brilliant border collie.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up?Paulsen reveals bits and pieces of his own life story through his experiences with eight of his dogs. After a heartfelt dedication to Cookie, the sled dog who saved his life, the author introduces readers first to Snowball, the puppy he acquired when he was seven years old and living in the Philippines, and then follows chronologically with profiles of other canine companions. He concludes with tales about Josh, the border collie with whom he currently shares a home. Paulsen is a master storyteller with a dry wit. His description of his dog Fred, whom he claimed was actually "nuclear in his capacity for destruction," and his account of his Great Dane Caesar, who was so petrified of trick-or-treaters that he would hide in the bedroom closet every Halloween with a housecoat over his eyes, are sure to elicit smiles. Paulsen can also make readers sigh when he relates how Snowball saved him from being bitten by a poisonous snake and how Cookie pulled him out of the water when he fell through the ice while trapping beaver. The statement, "Josh...is a person. I do not think in my heart that he is a dog," gives youngsters a real sense of how the man looks at these animals. An attractive pen-and-ink sketch of the profiled animal opens each chapter. This well-written, readable reminiscence serves as a tribute to the dogs in one person's life, written by someone who considers them his best friends.?Carol Kolb Phillips, The Library, East Brunswick, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-10. Paulsen's style has been smoother, but this honest, unpretentious celebration of dogs further entrenches his reputation as an author who is as successful at writing nonfiction as he is at writing novels. In roughly chronological chapters, he introduces eight memorable canines he has known and loved over the years. Some were pets, others he knew as trusted partners or protectors--from Snowball, the first, to Josh, who "if possible . . . is always with me." Although the chapters are linked by small details and references (often easy to recognize from his previous books), each can stand alone, with several, including a wildly funny one devoted to an adopted Great Dane named Caesar, promising good read-aloud material. Paulsen differentiates his canine friends beautifully, as only a keen observer and lover of dogs can. At the same time, he presents an intimate glimpse of himself, a lonely child of alcoholic parents, who drew strength and solace from his four-legged companions and a love of the great outdoors. Poignant but never saccharine, honest, and open, these engaging canine character studies are guaranteed to charm animal lovers and Paulsen's fans, especially those who know Woodsong (1990) or Father Water, Mother Woods (1994). There's something to please at every turn of the page. Stephanie Zvirin

From Kirkus Reviews
Paulsen paid loving tribute to the sled dogs in his life in Puppies, Dogs and Blue Northers (1996) so gives eight more canine companions equal time: Snowball, who saved his life when he was seven, to Caesar, an enthusiastic Great Dane who ``overwhelmed the furniture'' but was gentle with children, to Fred, who did battle with an electric fence, to Quincy, who did battle with a bear that attacked the author's wife. Thoughtful, ironic, often hilarious, these vivid character portraits not only make winning stories, but convey a deep respect for all dogs: ``They are wonderful and, I think, mandatory for decent human life.'' Dogs ...smile?
By Hilo Reader
If you love dogs, you'ii love this book. Many of us long time dog owners will find these stories remarkably similar to their own dogs. I've read every Gary Paulsen book ever published and I am amazed at how he can use a small amount of words to depict large action and scenery where other writers would use too many words. And, yes, dogs can smile!

Wisecracking sports agent Myron Bolitar returns with style in his third mystery (after Deal Breaker and Dropshot). This time, Myron is given a chance to return to professional basketball after being sidelined by a heartbreaking injury 10 years ago. No, the owner of the New Jersey Dragons doesn't want Myron to play. He wants him to use his skills as a onetime FBI undercover agent ("the worst kept secret in the continental United States") to find a missing player and former rival. The hunt for the absent player turns up an ugly web of complications that include a dead body, blackmail, a nasty custody suit, out-of-control gambling and thugs intent on revenge. Myron finds himself dragged in deeper than expected as the case stirs unresolved issues from his own past. With the help of his lethally loyal pal Win, he untangles the mess with bravado and not a little personal pain. Coben writes a fast-moving narrative in a style witty enough to keep pace without straining too hard.

Four and a half stars...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
I've read a few Harlan Coben books recently and I have thoroughly enjoyed his Myron Bolitar series. In Fade Away, he definitely raises the bar and moves from being not just an entertaining mystery writer, but also a well-written one.

Myron Bolitar is a 32 year old lawyer who runs his own sports agency. At one time, he was one of the top college players in the country. But after being drafted by the Celtics, he blows his knee out in a preseason scrimmage and his potential career is history. Now, the owner and general manager of the New Jersey Dragons want him to find one of their stars, Greg Downing, who has gone missing right before tournaments are to begin. In order not to raise suspicions, they place Bolitar on the team so that he can better investigate what has happened. Downing and Bolitar have been in competition since they were in high school, and it wasn't always about basketball. Bolitar finds many reasons for the possible disappearance of Downing that range from compulsive gambling to possible murder.

When I first started reading Coben, I thought the characters were a little too much like Robert Parker's Spenser and Hawk. But I've come to appreciate them on a new level. As a person who has played and coached basketball, Coben is right on in his observations about the game and the players. In describing Bolitar's complicated relationship with Downing, he says "there is a special bond between competitors. Kinda like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. You become defined by one another. It was like that with Greg and me. It was unspoken, but we both knew the bond was there." TC, the other Dragon star tells Bolitar about the price of being a star. " The real price is you ain't a person anymore. You're just a thing, a shiny thing like one of these Benzes out there. The poor brothers think I'm a golden ladder with goodies at every step up. The rich white boys think I'm a fancy pet."

The plot in Fade Away is also much more intricate than usual, and the ending has a stunner of a surprise. I never saw it coming. The one thing that kept me from giving it five stars is that the plot line where Bolitar is recruited to play is a big stretch. Otherwise, this was a pretty awesome book.

HARLAN HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
By A. Nelson
First and foremost, I do NOT consider myself a reader of mysteries, UNLESS of course, they are written by Harlan Coben. "Fade Away" is a wonderful example of what a writer can do with character development in a book series. With each book, we learn a little more about Myron Bolitar and what makes him tick - and we always like what we learn. This is the third of Coben's "Myron Bolitar" mysteries that I have read and each one just gets better. By now, I have learned to not try to figure out whodunnit before Myron does, because I will fail misrably. Coben tosses you red herrings like you were a performing seal at SeaWorld. And you will gobble each one up, with enthusiasm! Honestly, I resist the urge to read all of the Bolitar novels at once (even tho' I own them all). Coben's books are like Godiva Chocolates. You love them so much you just hate to gulp them down all at once.

Answered Prayers, by Danielle Steel

Danielle Steel’s 56th bestselling novel is about family and friendship, about one woman’s struggle to break free from the past—and the man who helps her triumph. And most of all, it is about daring to believe in...Answered Prayers.

On the outside, Faith Madison is the very picture of a sophisticated New Yorker. Slim, blond, stylish, Faith has a life many would envy. Overcoming a childhood marked by tragedy, married to a successful investment banker and having raised two grown daughters, Faith has enjoyed her role as mother and wife, and the good life that emanates from their bustling Manhattan town house. But every step of the way, Faith has carried within her a secret she could divulge to no one. And with it, she has kept an even more painful secret from herself.

For Faith, it is the sudden death of her stepfather—a man who, like her husband, Alex, always remained just beyond her reach—that will touch off a journey of change and revelation. At the funeral, painful memories flood back—and an old friend reenters Faith’s life. Faith is greeting mourners, when she hears a voice behind her and a single word that brings a quick smile to her face: “Fred.” Only one person aside from her older brother, Jack, called her that. Brad Patterson was Jack’s best friend, a long, lanky boy who teased, tormented, and protected Faith when they fancied themselves “The Three Musketeers” as kids. When Jack died years later, Faith and Brad came together again in their common, inconsolable grief, then lost touch once more amid the demands of families and busy lives a continent apart.

Now a lawyer in California, Brad has reentered Faith’s life just as she is making a decision that plunges her marriage into crisis. Determined to fulfill a long-held desire for a career of her own, Faith applies to law school against her husband’s wishes, igniting a barrage of anger and recrimination. Faith’s only solace is the correspondence she has begun with Brad, a man trapped in an empty marriage of his own, a friend she once lost and has found again. Soon e-mails are flying between them, bridging three thousand miles, sharing much-needed friendship, support, laughter. And as these two childhood friends rediscover each other, something extraordinary is beginning to happen. In the safety of their friendship, Brad will find the courage to make a decision he should have made years before. And Faith, too, is changing, beginning to believe in herself—and in her right to grab hold of her dreams. Gathering a strength she never knew she had, Faith is finally ready to face the most painful step of all: of sharing the secret that has long been haunting her, and truly opening up her heart for the first time in her life.

With unerring insight into the hearts of husbands and wives, lovers and families, Danielle Steel tells a wise and moving story of the secrets that wound and the choices that heal—and of the second chances that come only once in a lifetime.

From Publishers Weekly
One thing remains unchanged in an ever-changing world, as evinced by Steel's 56th novel: the author's middle-aged principals never look their age or run to fat. After a childhood marred by unspeakable abuse, New Yorker Faith Madison has everything a woman could want: marriage to an investment banker, two nice daughters, a lovely home. Now that her daughters are grown, however, Faith is faced with empty-nest syndrome. Her answer? Go back to law school. Her boorish husband, Alex, tells her she can't; when she runs into childhood friend Brad Patterson at a funeral, he reassures her that she can. Brad is in a similarly stifling marriage on the West Coast, and the two begin firing off e-mails of friendly support. Neither is aware of the growing depth of romantic feeling between them. Both being churchgoers, once they do become aware, how will they reconcile what they want with the fact that they are each being married to someone else? Alex and Faith's retro attitudes about her return to school are a little too pre-1960s for 40-somethings living in the current year, and the e-mails exchanged between Faith and Brad are vapid in their painful mundanity ("...Otherwise, nothing new here... Send me another email when you have time"). Steel seems to assiduously court the currently lucrative CBA market. Brad gives Faith rosary beads rather than the usual diamonds and some readers may find her protagonists' relationship maddeningly chaste, but the smooth plotting and practiced heartstring tugging achieve the desired effect.

Faith has a secret, and when childhood friend Brad shows up at her stepfather's funeral, she finally has someone in whom she can confide.

From Booklist
Steel's latest novel doesn't veer from her tried-and-true formula, so her loyal fans can happily anticipate enjoying this one without any surprises. Faith Madison, a beautiful, wealthy Manhattan housewife, has begun to question her life. Her two daughters are more or less raised; her husband, while cold and standoffish, remains a dependable partner; and their family is comfortably wealthy and fairly happy. Faith's nagging need for change is stimulated further when her stepfather dies. At the funeral, as painful memories from her sad past resurface, she runs into an old friend, Brad Patterson. Brad, who shares a close bond with Faith (due to some shared grief from the past), is also trapped in an unhappy marriage. As Faith's marriage deteriorates, she begins a long-distance correspondence with Brad, and although the two assure themselves that their relationship is purely platonic, things steadily heat up between them. In the meantime, spouses, children, and other events conspire to keep them apart. But as Faith slowly begins to believe in herself and her dreams, both she and Brad find the courage to overcome these obstacles. Steel's fans will be waiting for this one--librarians should stock up. Mowat, a great writer's true meaningful story.
By bradD
This is a wonderful, true, unusual story that has an ecological and anthropologic storyline that remains meaningful today. Farley Mowat writes of his early adventure of immersion into living in the wilds of Canada with wolves. His instructive book reveals the wolves behavior and debunks the many common beliefs held by those that would destroy these great creatures. Mowat writes his compelling story with a satirical path and with self-deprecating humor. A real classic!

Farley Mowat
By David Creighton
The book is well written and quite entertaining. I read it twenty-five years ago, bought this copy for my grand-daughter, age 13. However, when I mentioned my enjoyment of the book to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, who lived in the area where the story takes place, they had a very healthy dislike for Farley Mowat. They didn't like the way he treated the Inuit and leached off everyone he was in contact with. People in Nunavent don't hold him in high regard. They also question his accuracy about how wolves live. In spite of this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

mostly useless and far from complete
By Doke Scott
This book's data on fat and carbohydrates is insufficent for modern diets. It does has a lot of other useful data, some useless data, and is missing a lot of expected products.

The biggest problem is the way fat is listed. Saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat are all lumped into a single number for total fat. This makes the book inadequate for Atkins or South Beach dieters. You can't tell good fats from bad.

The listings show total carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, but they don't show net carbs, or sugar alcohols. This is important for dieters and diabetics since many of our specialty foods are sweetened with these substitutes. Of course, the book generally omits diet foods, so this may not matter.

There is no information about vitamins or minerals.

It does contain a lot of useful information about basic ingredients that are often sold without nutritional labels (for example, fresh meat and vegetables). There's also a lot of information about foods served at chain restaurants, which is useful for deciding to where to go.

The bulk of the data seems to have been copied from prepared food product labels. This isn't very useful, since I can usually just look at the package, though it is sometimes convenient. It's even less useful for the obsolete products.

A lot of obvious expected products are missing. I can't find any mention of diet soft drinks, diet meal bars, diet shakes, low-carb foods, or liquor. Beer and wine are mentioned, but in poor detail. Beer has only two entries: "regular" and "light". If they can devote 4 pages to different brands of fully-sugared soft drinks, they could at least tell us the differences between a stout and an india pale ale. Wine is a little better. They list desert, red, rose, and white. However, I find it difficult to believe a sweet white zinfandel has the same numbers as a dry chardonnay.

This book wasn't a complete waste of money, but I still want something better.

Comprehensive listing
By Robina R. Storm
This is a comprehensive listing of both natural foods i.e. flour, apple, string beans and manufactured foods i.e. canned chili, frozen dinners which provides not only calories but carbohydrates, fat, protein, cholesterol, sodium and fiber, You can find it all in this book and keep track of exactly what you are eating. It is an invaluable resource.

From Publishers Weekly
Balogh's lovely Regency series centering on Miss Martin's School for Girls closes with the story of founder and headmistress Claudia Martin, an aging spinster past 30 who does not see marriage in her future. Two former teachers have recently made titled matches, however, and one of them sends Joseph, marquess of Attingsborough, to the school, along with his good looks, friendly manner and offer of a carriage to London. His title puts Claudia off; she distrusts his apparent interest in her school; his near-engagement to Lord Balderston's daughter, the icily perfect Portia Hunt, makes him unavailable. For his part, Joseph, at 35, can no longer put off the need for a male heir. He is resigned to the match, but there is a very delicate matter that he needs to resolve beforehand, with Miss Martin's aid required to safeguard his secret and his reputation. Joseph's heart isn't in the subterfuge, however, and as social pressures come to bear, both he and Claudia are forced to reexamine their priorities. Balogh has a particular gift for infusing the Regency romance with complex and engaging characters in challenging situations that move beyond the obvious. (Mar.)

Claudia Martin, headmistress and owner of Miss Martin’s School for Girls, had no use for the ton, and reserved a special disdain for dukes. To Claudia’s great consternation, Joseph, the Marquess of Attingsborough, refuses to succumb to her icy disapproval. Instead, he thaws Claudia into accepting his offer for her and two of her recently graduated students to travel with him to London. That trip turns out to be just the beginning of his campaign to win Claudia’s affections, but she is certain she can resist the infinitely rakish Joseph. A prim and proper spinster discovers love is never sensible when she engages in a spirited battle of wits and wills with a nobleman with charm to spare. With her signature exquisite sense of characterization and subtle wit, Balogh brings her sweetly sensual, thoroughly romantic Simply quartet to a truly triumphant conclusion. --John Charles

Simply perfect ending to the series.
By Kdramakid
Balogh has written a winner! This final book in the "Simply" series is marvelous...almost a feminine version of the final "Bedwyn" book, 'Slightly Dangerous.' Claudia is similar to Wulfric Bedwyn in that she is prim, rigid, and utterly correct in her manner and behavior just as Wulfric was. His story is one of my favorite Balogh books, but 'Simply Perfect' rivals it as one of my new favorites. Balogh writes a touching tale of an independent woman who makes a successful life for herself after experiencing heartache at a young age. Her journey toward opening herself up to love in this book is well-told, believeable, and tremendously moving. Balogh knows human nature well. She always does such a good job of portraying all the psychological and emotional roadblocks we put in our way as we travel toward love. She is a master storyteller. Joseph is the perfect hero to Claudia's stern heroine. Their tale has it's share of twists and turns, but is ultimately completely satisfying. As always, I hate to reach the end of a Balogh book. If only she could write faster. How will I make it for another year?! She is truly unequalled as the best historical romance writer today.

A good story, with flaws
By favAR
This is the last book of Ms. Balogh's Simply Series and as usual she leaves the best for last.

*****SPOILERS ALERT***
As much as I liked this book I couldn't help finding some flaws.

It seems to me any obstacles that stand in the way of the H/ h happiness are conveniently removed in the way that's hard for common sense to believe. For 3/4 of book , the story makes so much of Portia (the hero's fiancee) being cold and a stickler for rules, decorum and proprietary. And yet in the end out of the blue the readers are supposed to believe that she could just takeoff to Scotland to elope with another man while still engaged to the hero. Isn't that one of the biggest sins in ton's culture? It's totally impossible to committed by someone like her.

And the hero is supposed to be a stickler for being monogamous in his relationship. He's remained unmarried because he can't put aside his mistress because they have a child together whom he loves. And even when he once discovered the mistress had been unfaithful and so no longer bed her he'd rather chosen to be celibate for 3 years till her death than bed others. That's how ridiculously monogamous he is. And yet when he is later engaged to Miss Portia and when one day the relationship runs into problem where Miss Portia threatens to break the engagement he sleeps with the heroine that very night believing he's free but nonetheless knowing the engagement would still be on the next day when the parents intervene. So all those story about him being monogamous is now being thrown out the window and as a reader I felt I was being fooled. I mean it feels like the author had run out of ideas on how to get the H/ h to get together to have their first sex. On top of that, the heroine is a school headmistress, for God's sake and also always is very particular with manners and discipline. But now she agrees to sleep with someone's fiance? Huh..?

Other than those the story is good.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Dominique and Amy-best friends and high school seniors in Florida-attend the big football game where Dom meets local track star Wesley. Wes is shy, and he and Dom e-mail and IM each other for some time before they start dating. Things get heavy pretty quickly and they lose their virginity on the clichéd prom night. Then they go to different colleges in the fall, and their relationship changes. Snadowsky describes Dom's first intimate relationship in frank and graphic terms. This novel discusses masturbation, oral sex, and intercourse both as part of Dom and Wes's romantic relationship and as casual pastime for Amy. For 17-year-old girls, the main characters have fairly mature voices and some of the novel reads like a Cosmopolitan article. The story is not highly original, but it does deal in modern terms with the real issues of discovering sex for the first time and dealing with it in a responsible way.—Corinda J. Humphrey, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
Dominique, a high-school senior in Fort Myers, Florida, is an aspiring doctor whose favorite book is Grey's Anatomy. Wes, a fellow senior, becomes her first boyfriend, and the two inexperienced teens explore first love, and sex, together. Written in Dom's authentic voice, Snadowsky's debut novel is an unusually honest portrayal of a teen girl's sexual discovery. Comparisons to Judy Blume's Forever (1975) are inevitable; even the plot, from the couple's initial fumbles to their breakup after separation, is similar. What feels so new here is the nonsensationalized explicitness. Dom speaks with an almost scientific curiosity: "I can recognize the features of his penis from my anatomy books." And her sexual insecurities are just as direct: "What if I squeal or scream or fart?" Also rare and authentic are scenes of Dom experimenting on her own, when she finally experiences her first orgasm. Snadowsky considers all the questions: Does sex mean love? What's normal in a relationship? Like Forever, this sensitive, candid novel is sure to find a wide audience among curious teens. Gillian Engberg

A modern twist on the same type of tale
By Teen Reads
At the beginning of ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND, 17-year-old Dominique Baylor hardly has time for boys. She's engrossed in her studies and college applications, and is polishing up on her GRAY'S ANATOMY (the textbook, not the TV show). Dom wants to be a doctor, and while she's not competing on her school's science quiz team, she's spending time playing the board game Operation with her parents.

Dom's best friend is Amy, who goes to a large public school. Dom is a student at the small private school where her mom teaches, allowing her to get free tuition. Amy dates and has more experience with boys. As Dom recounts, "My best friend, Amy, wants to wait until college to 'do it,' but until then she'll do 'everything but' with boys she thinks are cute and have good bodies."

At one of Amy's track meets, Dom meets a mystery boy who helps her when she has an accident. Mustering her courage and with Amy's help, Dom finds out that the mystery boy is a track star hottie named Wes and emails him. Instantly, a bond is formed, and Wes, who is quiet, shy and sweet, eventually becomes Dom's boyfriend. As high school seniors they experience many firsts, including spending the night together on prom night. When they both go away to college, however, they have to determine whether or not their relationship can survive long-distance dating.

Snadowsky's writing is sharp, and Dominique's voice is clever, funny and extremely authentic. While the book discusses sex --- in almost clinical detail --- it is done so through the eyes of a girl who is insecure, curious and deeply in love. Like Judy Blume's groundbreaking novel, FOREVER, which was the first to explore the topic of a girl having sex, ANATOMY OF A BOYFRIEND puts a modern twist on the same type of tale. Curious teen girls might find answers to questions in this book that they were afraid to ask.

An accurate potrayal of first love
By Krista
Dominique Baylor, a high school senior and an aspiring doctor, has never had a boyfriend. She attends a small private school in Florida, so even the prospects are low. Her best friend, Amy, attends a huge public high school. One day, both friends attend the school's annual Seniors vs. Faculty football game. At the game, Dominique meets a cute boy, while she is "sprawled facedown." Through Amy, Dom learns that the boy is Wesley, a cute track star. She then e-mails him, and they immediately have a connection. Before long, Dom experiences many firsts. However, with college decisions, Dom and Wes realize they are headed for two completely different paths. Will their relationship survive?

The Anatomy of a Boyfriend takes mature readers on the journey of Dominique's first love. Dominique's authentic voice was easy to relate to. She sounded like somebody I would like to be friends with. Her voice also made the novel a quick read. I finished this book within two days. Mature readers will also appreciate how Snadowsky incorporates sex into the novel, without idealizing it. Parts of the novel made me never want to do certain things. :-P I also think Snadowsky realistically describes a long distance relationship after high school.

I did not have any major complaints with Anatomy of a Boyfriend, but a few things could have been better. I wish Dominique had more of a basis for falling head-over-heels for Wes. Part of me thinks Snadowsky intentionally wrote the novel so Dom lacked a logical reason, but I'm not really sure. I mean so many girls' first loves are douches (from my observations at least). The lack of a basis hurt the resolution. Instead of the resolution seeming like the natural flow of things, it made Wes seem like a complete douche, when he was only partially a douche.

Overall, Anatomy of a Boyfriend is an accurate potrayal of first love that older teens will enjoy.

Oh, Honey, No
By Janet Morris
I hadn't really heard much about this book before I read it, so I definitely didn't have any preconceived notions about what it would be like. I didn't even read the reviews by others on here to see how they felt about the book, so there was no bias. And, when I started the book, the first fifty or so pages seemed okay-ish. It was certainly better than two stars at page 50 than it was at the end.

For a work of realistic fiction, it was very unreal. The characters didn't act or talk like teenagers. Even awkward teenagers don't act like this. Some of the scenes almost came off as clinical and robotic in nature. Actually, a lot of them don't seem like they would fit in any story for children, teens, or adults. They're just very boring and weird.

For a romance, it had a lack of romance. Wes and Dom love each other, but there's no rhyme or reason to why. I know that you could argue that that's true for all romances and for love in general, but this book is especially bad at telling the story of why this guy is even her boyfriend or her first love.

It has a very sex-negative vibe. Amy is almost always degraded for being open to different types of sexual activities. The relationship between Dom and Wes portrays sex as being something that is always painful and awkward for girls, where guys will have orgasms and girls will always have to fake it. I know a lot of women do have that sort of experience, but we don't really need to teach young women that it has to be like this. Sex is something where if you expect it to be painful and bloody and awkward, then you are more likely to have a painful experience. I'm not saying that the book needs to be smutty or anything like that, but give girls some hope that they aren't going to be injured in sex acts. It's also really disturbing that any time that Dom is looking forward to or thinking about sex that something bad happens to her or to Wes. That is another sex-negative vibe to have.

As for other things that really bugged me: Playing up the trope of a redheaded female character as sex-obsessed was really annoying. That may seem like a little thing, but since it's an actual recognized trope for works of fiction (and, worse, a stereotype of redheads in the real world), it really isn't all that little. There was also a bit of fat-shaming. You have a character (Dom) starting her first year of college, so there's the mentioning of the freshman fifteen, which might be okay. What isn't okay is that her mother starts telling her that she should order certain foods so that she can me more like her old self. When the character asks if it's about her weight going up, she finds out that it is. When she turns to her father for support he says (and does) the following:

He emerges from behind his menu. "I agree with your mom. Guys can be a little overweight," he says, pinching his gut with his hand, "but girls can't."

This is for her gaining enough weight so that her clothes just snug on her. In other words, she might have gone up one size and her parents are giving her a hard time. She's also just been injured when she was exercising. When it continues and she goes to leave the table her father does the following:

"Dom, you're blowing this way out of proportion," Dad reprimands. "We're staying put, and let's have a nice dinner, for Christ's sake."

She's basically been told that she isn't allowed to be offended by their comments. That's just wrong. If parents act like this, it is totally fine to get upset with them. This behavior is reprehensible. That she's eventually treated like she overreacted after their comments have (naturally) hurt her feelings is so disgusting. And she ends up feeling both ashamed of her body and of her feelings being hurt. That's not okay. And the way it is portrayed is not okay either.

And there's the somewhat minor character Calvin. He might become a friend or a future boyfriend for her. Who knows? But the way that he acted when they first met was a little on the creepy side. This is another thing that probably would be best left out of books meant for the young adult age group. This might teach young people to allow this sort of behavior in their interpersonal relationships, which is a bit twisted and potentially dangerous.

It isn't all bad, but the good parts of the book just aren't enough to overcome the bad parts. The plot is really flat. The development of characters is flat. There are some insightful paragraphs, but they are truly few and far between. And there's a quirkiness to certain parts that I enjoyed, but by the end of the book, they had disappeared. The humor, the fun, and everything good about the book was gone before the book ended. That's not good, so this book is getting two stars because it was not executed very well.
