An excellent lesson on the pleasure of giving
By jatebt@hotmail.com
I really enjoyed reading this book to my daughter Emily, age 3. It is a wonderful story about a boy who had five new pennies and spent them buying things for others. In such a greedy world we need to instill the power of giving to our children. The story is well written and the illustrations are enticing.

Easy to read--and memorize!
By A Customer
My 2 1/2-year-old loves this book and was soon "reading" it back to me! Its simple rhymes relate a story of generosity and thoughtfulness. We read it every day for weeks, and return to it frequently after 4 months. Paperback version is not sturdy, though--pages fell out after repeated reading.

What a wonderful story to read with your child! A great lesson in sharing and basic mathmatics. Plus, the illustrations are wonderful 3-D paper cutouts! This book is a special and rare treat for 3,4 and 5 year olds. I highly recommend it.

What is ³eleven,² and why does Sam fear it? Could it be a month, a day, an address, an age? Two trees standing side by side or the double mast on a boat? Whatever it is, it haunts Sam's dreams--more frequently as his eleventh birthday approaches. Then, while secretly searching the attic for birthday presents, he notices a newspaper clipping with a picture that could be himself at a much younger age and the mysterious headline ³MISSING.² Patricia Reilly Giff writes prose with the touch of a poet. Staci Snell reads with the cadence of a poet and a respect for the author's words. She is the voice of Sam's subconscious as he puzzles through the mystery of who he is and where he belongs. Middle grade readers will love this suspenseful story
By Deborah
Sam doesn't know why he fears the number eleven, but as his 11th birthday approaches, he feels a need to explore his past. When he discovers a locked box and a newspaper clipping in the attic, he learns he might once have been a missing child. Now he's worried about his relationship with beloved grandfather, Mack, and friends Onji and Anima.

Since Sam has difficulty reading, he befriends a new girl at school who reads constantly. Soon Sam and Caroline are working on a class project together and searching for clues to Sam's past.

Characters make this story very special. Mack teaches Sam the pleasures of repairing and working with wood. Sam uses his gifts to build a clever wooden castle for the school project. The lessons he applies to his woodworking help him develop the patience to face his reading problems and discover the truth about his past.

Onji and Anima, friends and neighbors, act as extended family for Mack and Sam. Anima reads to Sam every evening, and Onji is constantly offering food and support.

But it is Sam's friendship with Caroline that really centers this book. Sam isn't sure he wants to be friends with a girl, but he needs Caroline's ability to read. Caroline's artistic but nomadic parents make Sam appreciate his own solid family life.

This story moves along quickly, driven by Sam's constant search for information about his mysterious past. All the clues finally fall into place and the dreams and memories that have bothered Sam are explained in a satisfying ending.

Reluctant boy readers will especially enjoy this story - Sam is an active, imaginative, and believable eleven-year-old. During the course of the story, he works with wood, goes boating, and ultimately decides to build his own boat. He works out problems for himself, seeking help from friends, family, and teachers when he needs it. But girls will find the story equally enjoyable, as Caroline provides an alternate viewpoint to the action.

This would make a good read-aloud book for a classroom. The action-filled chapters will hook readers, and there's room for discussion of issues related to reading and learning difficulties, friendship, family secrets, and the joys of developing one's own talents and gifts.

Veteran children's author Patricia Reilly Giff offers readers many issues to ponder
By KidsReads
Sam doesn't have it so bad. Sure, he has real problems reading and has to spend part of each day in the dreaded, ugly Resource Room. Sure, his parents are long gone. But Sam has friends and, most importantly, a wonderful "family" who loves him.

There's his grandfather Mack, a gifted woodworker who has passed on his skills, and his tools, to his beloved grandson, who also shows signs of seeing hidden possibilities in the most unlikely blocks of wood. There's Onji, who owns the deli next door and always gives Sam the best brown bag lunches. And there's Anima, owner of the Indian restaurant down the way, who cooks Sam's favorite curries and, most importantly, reads to him late into the evening, because Sam can't read by himself. Finally, there's Night Cat, Sam's beloved companion for as long as he can remember. Together, they form the perfect companions, making a comfortable extended family that nurture and protect one another.

So why is Sam dreading turning 11? The number 11 haunts him in dreams --- or are they barely-recalled memories? When Sam discovers a newspaper clipping that features a picture of himself as a very young boy and the headline "MISSING," he feels like there must be some mystery in his past that he soon becomes desperate to solve, even though he needs to read to do so. Perhaps Caroline, his new partner for a school castle-building assignment, will help him. She reads all the time, after all. But Caroline, whose itinerant parents can't seem to settle down and who's been to three schools already this year, has troubles of her own. Will she and Sam find the answer before it's too late? And what if the answer is what Sam fears? What if his only true family --- his grandfather --- isn't really his family at all?

In ELEVEN, veteran children's author Patricia Reilly Giff offers readers many issues to ponder. She explores questions of literacy, of belonging, of home and family, and of friendship. She also urges readers to question their own definitions of giftedness and of family. Both of these concepts are illustrated with great flexibility in the portrayal of Sam and of his unusual but loving and nurturing home life, contrasted with Caroline's more traditional, but less stable and satisfying, family situation.

Giff brilliantly employs these big issues in a plot that is simultaneously urgent --- will Sam discover his true identity? Do we even want him to? --- and leisurely, as she allows Sam plenty of room in which to question his assumptions and plenty of space in which Sam and Caroline's lovely friendship can grow. ELEVEN is one of those wonderful books whose quiet surface simplicity belies its deeply complex moral and philosophical questions. Quite simply, it is one of the best novels for young people that I've read in a long time.

A new twist on the "coming-of-age" story
By Christopher Lingel
"Eleven" begins with quite the premise: During his erstwhile search for his birthday presents, Sam stumbles across some old newspaper clippings kept by his grandfather, with whom he lives. Because Sam struggles with reading, he is only able to recognize his picture as a toddler, and the word "MISSING". "Missing?" Sam wonders, "I was missing?" From here, Sam begins to wonder: Where are his parents? Is the man he lives with really his grandfather? And since he himself cannot read the article, he'll need to find someone he can trust to read it for him.

This is a premise for a story that could easily have gone into many uninteresting and tired directions, but author Patricial Reilly Giff avoids many of them and weaves a story together that is both authentic and fulfilling.

When Sam finally gains the answers to the questions he asks, we accept them, and so does he.

I enjoyed, too, the subplot between Sam and his teachers, who are struggling to help him to read. As a middle school teacher, I found that Sam's reactions and struggles with his inability to sound much the as today's students who bear similar struggles. His final conversation with his reading teacher was quite moving.

As a coming-of-age story, "Eleven" isn't as strong as others, simply because Sam's challenges aren't that common. But his quest for self-identity, as well as that for simple friendship, should ring true with younger readers. Even if they can't put themselves directly into his shoes, they could probably see him as a friend or classmate.

A worthy addition to any library.

funny little story
By A Customer
My daughter loves Nate the Great! She laughed through the whole book, "who wants a tuna fish can as a prize?" All the little characters in this book. I could see her trying to figure out where the tuna fish can went. A nice way to keep them interested through the whole book.

High-Engagement, Low Level
By Christina Robinson
As a teacher, this is a great book for students in a middle school classroom who read at a very low level (second or third grade). The stories aren't too childish and the language is pretty accessible.

Disappointing
By Tom Glass
My 14th Jack Reacher book. Obviously I'm a fan. But not so much this time. Too much freeway/street location detail. LA folks know where a place is with just a couple references. Outside of LA it doesn't mean anything. Tiresome. Too much minutiae. Too long and drawn out story. Like he took an idea but didn't have enough for a book so just wrote pages and pages of filler.

Good Luck and No Trouble
By steppo
I don't think I've seen Reacher have to rely as much on luck before. It lightened the story a bit, and left some doubt open a little longer than usual. In the end, it was as satisfying as usual. But I have to tell you, there really isn't a lot of fun in throwing guys out of helicopters.

From Publishers Weekly
The sixth story about irrepressible Anastasia Krupnik begins with Anastasia deciding she cannot attend the funeral of her Aunt Rose in California. Anastasia, it turns out, is afraid not only of flying, but of dying. So the Krupniks leave Anastasia and her brother with a sitter, and she must face her fears and problems without her parents for several days. Determined to become a journalist, Anastasia believes she should have "all the answers," and is dismayed to discover things do not always go her way. She's humiliated in gym class because she's the only one who can't climb the ropes, and, upon her parent's return, her plan to fix up her newly single Uncle George with her friend Daphne's divorced mother falls flat. But in a hilarious ending that only Anastasia could set in motion, she not only puts things right, but realizes that a lot of people consider her very special. Funny and touching, this new book is every bit as lively and touching as Lowry's first five, and definitely another winner.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 Humiliated by her inability to climb a rope in gym class, 13-year-old Anastasia schemes to overcome the obstacle and impress her beautiful lady gym teacher, on whom she has a crush. Counterpoints to the plot are Anastasia's matchmaking efforts on behalf of a newly widowed uncle and a friend's mother, her struggle to make a smarmy recitation come alive and her attempt to view life as a journalist. In fact, each chapter begins humorously with Anastasia's efforts to make the day's events fit into "WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE WHY," somehow , nonetheless , reading in the style of the National Enquirer . The language in Lowry's stories about Anastasia is always natural, but . . . Answers also benefits from this stylistic variation. The surrounding characters, from baby brother Sam playing funeral on the floor to bereaved "Clark Gablish" Uncle George are colorful and quirky and distinct. Anastasia manages, with some help from her mother, to resolve the rope conflict. The story's other elements fall, quite literally, into their own likely and lively places. Not only does Anastasia have the answers, but she's also at the top of her form. Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, Mass.

Great Book For Children Everywhere!

a busy young lady
By MS
In the sixth Anastasia Krupnik book, the protagonist has a full plate, like she always does. Her Uncle George just lost his wife to salmonella poisoning and Anastasia doesn't believe in wasting time setting him up with a new love interest. He does look like Clark Gable, after all. Also, there are so many single women around them.

On the school front, Anastasia has a crush on her female gym teacher, but she feels awkward because she's the only girl in class who can't climb a rope to reach the ceiling. She'll practice at home, in her garage, so she can impress Ms. Willoughby. Then there's a group of foreign educators who will be visiting her school soon. She's going to memorize a poem, so when the teacher calls on her during the visitation she'll be ready to knock the guests' socks off.

Anastasia makes a mess of things, like she always does, but it's in the spirit of humor and learning important lessons. This book wasn't as funny as other books in the series, but I did enjoy all the things Anastasia went through. She's one busy young lady. This is a 3.5 for me, but I'll go ahead and give it a 4.

He's a special agent who never loses his cool.

She's the heat-seeking missle headed straight for his heart.

Keeping cool under pressure is the credo C. Smith Rydell lives by. That’s why he was handpicked by the Special Defense Forces for a mission few men survive. So why has the ex-DEA superstar been reassigned to Panama City, playing bodyguard to a blond in a black string bikini? Except Honey York isn’t your average pampered socialite. She’s the woman Rydell caught smuggling cash into El Salvador four months ago. And now she wants him to take her back.

All Honey has to do is find the guerrilla camp, deliver the goods, and get the hell out of the jungle—all in forty-eight hours. Only one man is up for the job. But sharing an unforgettable one-night stand was nothing next to being stranded with Rydell on some third world mountaintop. And with bullets flying and all hell breaking loose, now is not the time for passion. As if these two could possibly resist it….

Chapter One

One day later, the Blake Hotel, Panama City, Panama

Unbelievable.

Smith stood stock-still at the edge of the hotel's pool deck, staring at the bikini-clad blonde testing the water with the perfectly polished toes of her right foot.

Tilting his head slightly to one side, he sized her up from a different angle, not that it made any difference. She was perfect from every angle, absolutely perfect. Geezus. His life couldn't possibly be this complicated, this crazy. He should be with the guys at Joint Ops Central, hot on the trail of two traitors, a notorious drug runner with global connections, and a plane the DEA analysts were still drooling over. He shouldn't have been rousted out of his hotel room in the middle of the night and shoved on a flight leaving Lima before dawn, and he sure as hell shouldn't have been reassigned to a lousy Personal Security Detail, a PSD, not for any reason—but especially not for this reason.

Panama City, hell.

Standing next to him, a State Department flack rattled on about being held personally responsible for any mishaps or screwups, of which there had better be absolutely none, zero, or Smith was going to get his ass handed to him on a platter. The stakes were high, the flack said; Rydell was being tagged for a job that he no way in hell deserved, and he damn well better remember it.

Yeah, yeah. Smith had heard it all before, and like everyone else who'd ever tried to sell that line, the State guy had it ass-backward. Guys like him never got tagged for jobs they didn't deserve. They got tagged for the jobs nobody else could do or the jobs nobody else wanted. Neither reason of which actually applied to the current situation, he silently admitted. Every guy in the world wanted this job. Guys dreamed about a PSD like this one, fantasized about them, and there were hundreds of badass knuckle-draggers out there who could do it at least as well as he could, and probably a few who could do it better, because at fifty feet he was already going down in flames.

Honey York.

Unbelievable.

She stepped down into the pool, bent over—sweet geezus—and splashed some water on her arms.
He reached up and loosened his tie.

Fuck.

Yeah. Right. They'd done that, and seeing her again only proved what he'd done a pretty damn good job of denying for the last four months: Once had not been enough.

Not even close.

And it pissed him off.

He didn't need this.

"Ms. York's safety and comfort are going to be your top priority for the next two days," the flack was saying. "Nothing, and I mean nothing, is going to come between you, and absolutely nothing is going to happen between you, so get those thoughts out of your head, and if you bring her back here with so much as a single hair out of place, you will find yourself back at the bottom of the food chain. Do I make myself clear, Mr. Rydell?"

"Crystal." The single word was cold, succinct, and in no way indicative of his current internal condition, which was hot under the collar and veering toward some sort of epiphany he was sure he didn't want to have.

But, dammit, strings had been pulled somewhere to get him taken off the Peruvian mission, and those same damn strings had to have been bought, sold, and horse-traded in dark alleys in order to get his butt landed on the pool deck of the most exclusive hotel in Panama City for a baby-sitting job—strings a whole helluva lot bigger than the ones holding Honey's bikini together.

String bikini.

Black bikini.

An if-there-were-a-hundred-and-four-square-inches-of-material-in-the-whole-damn-thing-he'd-eat-his-hat bikini.

And he couldn't take his eyes off it or the curves it did absolutely nothing to contain—which wasn't doing a damn thing to improve his mood.

"The itinerary for Ms. York's tour is in your portfolio, including all departures and arrivals and the names of every major coffee grower in the highlands. She's especially keen on meeting the plantation owners."

Smith slanted a glance down through his Ray-Bans at the shrimp-sized flack in his bespoke suit and handmade leather shoes. Brett Jenkins III had Yale written all over him, and asshole written all over that.

"Coffee? Tour?" Nobody had said anything about coffee to him. Nobody had used the word "tour."
High-priority personal security detail was what he'd been told, orders straight from the top, code red, a full-court press requiring the utmost discretion and a covert operator from SDF.

He let his gaze stray back to the woman leaning over the side of the pool and taking a sip from a pi–a colada with enough fruit in it to qualify as a side dish.

Discretion, his ass.

There was nothing discreet about Honoria York-Lytton in a black string bikini, nothing discreet about the huge pair of rhinestone-studded black sunglasses perched on her nose, nothing discreet about the hundred and one shades of blond hair she'd twisted up into a perfectly disheveled pile of wild curls on top of her head.

A hair out of place? Give him a break. She didn't have a hair in place. What she did have was a tiny black cocktail umbrella tucked in her wild blond curls. When she took the pink umbrella out of her pi–a colada and stuck it in her hair, too, the picture was complete: bimbo, party girl, five feet two inches of pure plaything.

He wasn't fooled for a second.

If she'd taught him one thing in San Luis, El Salvador, it was to never underestimate a woman in platform heels and a polka-dot dress—especially if that woman's family had come over on the Mayflower and her father and two uncles had been United States ambassadors, especially if that woman held an advanced degree from Harvard and her dating pool started on Madison Avenue in Manhattan and ended at the State Department in Washington, D.C.

She was connected, all right, and he hadn't called her, not once since the wild night they'd hooked up in the old Hotel Palacio in San Luis. He'd had Skeeter, one of his SDF teammates, track her all the way home to Washington, D.C., and confirm her safe arrival, and then he'd done his best to put her out of his mind. He hadn't written her, except once, but never sent the letter. He hadn't sent flowers, though he'd been damn tempted to more times than he wanted to admit, and he hadn't returned her panties.

Nope. The panties were still his, still in his possession, still in his rucksack, the sheerest, prettiest, most expensive piece of lingerie he'd ever seen, ever touched, ever whatevered.

Perfect. He had her silk underwear, and she'd sicced the State Department on him. Oh, hell no, this was no accident.

". . . limo will be here in about forty-five minutes to take you to the air base to catch a flight scheduled to leave in two hours and arrive at Ilopango International Airport this afternoon. From there, you'll be taking a private vehicle up into the mountains of—"

"Ilopango?" Smith interrupted, his attention and his gaze snapping back to Jenkins. "Ilopango is in El Salvador." And no way in hell had anybody said any damn thing about the mission being in El Salvador.

"And so are the coffee plantations Ms. York is scheduled to visit in Morazan Province along the Honduran border, near the Torola River. Ambassador Hasbert himself has arranged the introductions."
Smith's eyebrows arched above the curve of his Ray-Bans. The Torola? Jenkins had to be kidding. Didn't the man know what in the hell was going on up in the hills of Morazan? Hadn't he done any goddamn research on this PSD at all?

Obviously not.

Smith's gaze shot back to Honey, and he swore silently to himself. She knew, so help him God. She had to know, or she wouldn't have needed him, because, dammit, there was only one reason for there to be any connection whatsoever between the pampered, pedicured, and pedigreed Washington, D.C., socialite and a Third World backwater in the Salvadoran highlands. Only one, goddammit, and it was nothing but the kind of trouble somebody should have stopped before it got to the point of him staring at her bikinied bottom in Panama City.

Geezus. Just how the hell much trouble had her sister gotten herself into this time? And who in the hell had Hasbert arranged to introduce her to? The Salvadoran government-sanctioned coffee growers, or the rebel leader trying to blow them off the map, Diego Garcia, because, frankly, Ms. York didn't need an introduction to Diego Garcia. She and the guerrilla captain had met in San Luis the same night Smith had met her, four months ago, in a church, over a table piled high with the quarter of a million dollars Honey had smuggled into El Salvador and had been handing over to a dissident priest who hadn't wasted a second in handing it over to Garcia—U.S. cash, all in fifties bundled together by rubber bands into two-inch stacks.

Mission of mercy, she'd called it, a mission of mercy for her sister, a trust-fund-baby bride of Christ who was sacrificing her life as an impoverished nun in El Salvador. But all hell had broken out on the border in the last four months, and more times than he cared to remember, Smith had wondered if he should have stopped the illegal cash transaction in the sacristy when he'd had the chance.

Not that he'd had much of a chance. The money had been on the table by the time he'd gotten to the church, and he'd been a little low on firepower and authority. One .45 cartridge, that's all he'd had for the ancient pistol he'd been packing. One lousy cartridge for one old gun, because Honey had stolen his Sig Sauer, his extra magazines, and about half his brains by then.

And there she was, sipping a pi–a colada and cooling her cute ass in the pool, waiting for him to take her back into El Salvador.

Smith cleared his throat before he spoke.

"Has Ms. York been advised of the guerrilla activity on the Salvadoran side of the border, specifically along the Torola River?"

"Thoroughly advised," Jenkins said, his narrow jaw firming up. "That's why you're here."

Perfect.

Smith checked his watch and wondered if the Peruvian transport he'd come in on was still at the airport, and whether or not he could get his butt back on it. His work with the DEA was damned important, and he'd like to get back to it, just as soon as he nipped this circus in the bud and got Honey York headed in the right direction. Which was north. Way north. Much farther north than El Salvador. Closer to Canada was what he had in mind.

"All you have to worry about is doing your job, Mr. Rydell," Jenkins continued. "You can rest assured that I am doing mine."

No, he wasn't. Not if Honoria York-Lytton was traveling into the mountains of El Salvador.

"I think we need to speak with Ambassador Hasbert," Smith said. And anybody else who'd been in on this deal. A personal security detail in Panama wasn't exactly a vacation, but in Morazan, it was combat duty, and Honey had no business going into combat. Somebody had to know better than to let this thing fly, and he needed to find that someone. If it wasn't Hasbert, then he was going straight to General Grant. Honey had jerked somebody's chain to get him assigned as her personal bodyguard, and Grant was the guy who could jerk back.

Because this was crazy.

"Ambassador Hasbert will not return to Panama and be in residence again until the end of the month," Jenkins said. "Until then, I am in charge and have personally verified Ms. York's itinerary."

Okay, it was worse than crazy. It was dangerously crazy—Honey heading into Salvadoran guerrilla territory, and the idiot in charge of the embassy in Panama facilitating the trip.

"You know this is wrong," Smith said. Anybody could see how wrong it was, allowing her anywhere near the Torola, coffee plantations or no coffee plantations, and he wasn't buying for a minute that the damn fiasco had anything to do with coffee, not with Diego Garcia in the area.

No. This disaster had Sister Julia's fingerprints all over it.

Jenkins's jaw firmed up even more. "What I know, Mr. Rydell, and what you apparently still need to learn, is that it is in everyone's best interests to follow the orders they are given. Mine are to turn Ms. York over to you, and yours are to guarantee her safety while she is in your care, at the sacrifice of your own life, if necessary."

The tight little smile Jenkins gave with his summation of the situation made it clear that, for his money, the quicker Smith could arrange to sacrifice his life, the better. Unfortunately, given the situation, Smith could see the odds on that were heading exactly where Jenkins wanted them to head.

Or not.

He glanced at Honey again, and this time, she was looking back. A frisson of something or another skittered through him, hitting places he was trained to ignore, and ignore them was what he did. Steeling himself, he stepped past Jenkins and headed for the swimming pool. He was the professional here, the guy they'd called for help. Taking charge was what he did for a living, and he was damn good at it.

He crossed the pool deck with long, sure strides. If the State Department pencil pusher didn't have the brains to stop this thing before it blew up in his face, or the guts to stand up to a five-foot-and-next-to-nothing blonde, Smith was going to do it for him.

Kee-rist. Irena Polchenko was alive and on the loose, running drugs for the Cali cartel. That was about all the bad news Smith could handle this week. Honey York needed to get her butt back home—and he was just the guy to tell her.

Chapter Two

Smith didn't look happy.

Honey took another long sip of her pi–a colada, then slowly stirred the drink with her straw, watching Mr. Determination and Coolness Under Pressure bear down on her from behind the safety of her sunglasses. Oh, no, he didn't look happy at all.

She didn't blame him. She wasn't very damn happy with the situation, either. Lifting the glass to her lips, she licked a bit of sugar off the rim and let it melt on her tongue. He did look good in a suit, though.

Damn good.

Dove gray, tailored to perfection, crisp white shirt, robin's egg blue tie striped in pink and gold, the Windsor knot a little loose around his neck. He looked very GQ, very tropical . . . and cold, even in this heat. Cold, calculating, and in control, she noted; hard, unforgiving, and dangerous.

Ok, but not great. Someone who reminds me of Paris Hilton visits revolutionaries and drug dealers in Central America.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Honey is a wealthy socialite living in Washington D.C. Her sister Julia is a nun working in an orphanage in El Salvador. The orphanage is in an area controlled by Diego, the leader of a revolutionary military group. Because Honey has visited Julia before, the US government wants Honey to deliver money and arms to Diego. Honey wants to go because she thinks her sister might need her help. Smith is a US special forces soldier who is assigned to go with Honey to protect her. A second plot involves an enemy of Smith who is plotting and planning to kill him.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I didn't like Honey or her decisions and actions. If she wanted to help Julia, she could have hired someone to find Julia and pass messages along. Putting herself at risk of being kidnapped for ransom didn't work for me. In addition, Smith is putting his life on the line to protect her, yet she is not honest with him when he asks her questions about the trip. He tries to talk her into letting him go into the jungle without her, but she refuses and won't tell him why. Aside from that, the story is ok. It took awhile to get going as the reader was meeting and learning about all the different players in the first half of the book. The second half was better. The best part was the ending. The book was ok, but it didn't hold my interest as well as other books have. I prefer more witty conversation or things that surprise and delight me.

Steele Street Series Back On Track
By Cherise Everhard
After loving every one of the Steele Street books, the last one, Crazy Sweet, was a disappointment. The main story lacked the intrigue and the wonderful characters I had come to expect from this series. That being said, the secondary story and characters of Special Defense Forces operative, C.Smith Rydell, and heiress, Honey York, saved that story from being a complete bust... And in this story C. Smith and Honey bring this series back on track, making it wonderful once again.

It was only 4 months ago when C. Smith disregarded the mission he was on to rescue an out of place Honey in the streets of San Luis. After helping her on her mission they shared one night of passion and then the next day he had her on a plane back to the States. They never saw each other again. Fast forward to the present day and SDF Operative C. Smith has been called off an important assignment to play bodyguard to Honey. She has to go back to El Salvador on yet another mission, this one more dangerous then the first.

Honey and C. Smith kept me flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. The mission they are on is complex; it involves drug runners, weapons, money and a few nuns. When you throw their chemistry into the mix, the book gets harder and harder to put down with every page. An introduction to two very dynamic new characters promises an equally thrilling next book.

This is supposed to be a spin off of the Steele Street series, but it seems to be the same type of book with a lot of the same players. No complaints here. This book was as good as I hoped it would be, containing no shortage of action, adventure, danger or romance. It left me in eager anticipation of Cutting Loose due out next winter. Enjoy!

The Villa of Mysteries, by David Hewson

In a thriller of astounding menace and power, the acclaimed author of A Season for the Dead returns to the landscape he has made his own—the seething landscape of modern-day Rome–where ancient crimes lie hidden beneath colorful, bustling avenues. Here a teenage girl has disappeared, a detective is exploring a 2000-year-old ritual–and an astonishing mystery is about to unravel in a city of secrets and rage….

In Rome’s crowded Campo dei Fiori, a woman rushes up to two carabinieri lounging in their sunglasses and uniforms, insisting that her sixteen-year-old daughter has just been abducted. Detective Nic Costa sees the scene unfold and intervenes. Because Costa knows what the two officers don’t: that in the morgue at Rome’s police headquarters, a forensic pathologist is examining the strange, mummified corpse of another
girl, whose disappearance and death bear haunting similarities….

Police pathologist Teresa Lupo is Nic’s colleague, friend, and his only equal when it comes to breaking the rules to get results, whatever the cost. Now, after years of living with the dead, Teresa insists that her superiors move quickly to save a life. Poring over the body of the girl in the morgue, she has found too many similarities between the girls, including a unique, leering tattoo. Lupo is sure that the vanished girl is headed for a bizarre ancient Bacchanalia involving virgins and sacrificial murder–a ritual that is only days away.

As Nic and Teresa claw at the case from two sides–and as Nic finds himself at once puzzled and beguiled by the missing girl’s seductive mother–a chilling picture is beginning to emerge…of secret relationships and sexual depravity, organized crime and unimaginable corruption. With the clock ticking down on a young girl’s life, Nic and Teresa are about to make the most horrifying discovery of all—in a pit of human darkness, where an age-old malevolence still endures, evil has consumed innocence…and a very modern vengeance has begun.

A spellbinding mix of suspense, forensic science, and human drama, The Villa of Mysteries will catch you off guard at every turn—a novel that is at once heartbreaking and impossible to put down.

From Publishers Weekly
This second, slightly uneven entry in British writer Hewson's Nic Costa series (A Season for the Dead) picks up as the Italian detective reluctantly returns to work following a six-month hiatus after being wounded and losing his partner. Stable now—but not fully recovered—he and new partner Gianni Peroni (also damaged goods) are assigned to investigate a somewhat odd archeological find. While sifting for treasure along the banks of the Tiber, an American couple discovered the body of an adolescent girl, perfectly preserved in the rich peat. Apparently the sacrificial victim in some ancient Dionysian ritual, the girl sports an unusual tattoo and was buried with a coin in her mouth. As is soon revealed, though, her death was recent. The plot thickens when British tourist Miranda Julius reports that a mysterious man on a motorbike has abducted her 16-year-old daughter, Suzi, who resembles the dead girl. Costa and Peroni are soon joined by anti-Mafia agent Rachele D'Amato, though it's unclear how the mob is involved in the affair. Hewson does a stellar job bringing all these disparate characters together, but Costa misses and misinterprets obvious clues, asks too few questions and wraps the case up too quickly, straining credibility. Though not as tight as Hewson's first Nic Costa title, this is an atmospheric follow-up, steeped in dark ritual.

From Booklist
Once again capturing the imagination of historical mystery lovers, the author of Lucifer's Shadow [BKL My 1 04] brings an ancient Dionysian ritual to light as a clue in this riveting and fast-paced thriller. Hoping to score an archaeological status symbol in an Italian peat bog near Rome, a drunken American couple dredges up instead the beautiful preserved body of what seems to be a 2,000-year-old sacrificial victim. Amid departmental infighting and territorial feuds between government agencies, the Roman police and morgue pathologists discover a link between the bog body and the disappearance of a young tourist: both were involved in a cult that worships Dionysus, the god of lust and debauchery. With all their leads ending in violent death and time running out, detectives Costa and Peroni unearth a web of Mob cover-ups and crooked cops in a puzzling drama involving sex rites and drugs. Every character hides a dark secret that, like Rome's ancient mysteries, seems to lurk just beyond reach. A complex and satisfying mystery from a master plot maker. Jennifer Baker

This is a work, and an author, of unforgettable stature
By Bookreporter
Until a couple of years ago David Hewson was known primarily as a correspondent for the London Sunday Times. A more rooted, and smarter, friend of mine who reads that publication regularly makes Hewson's dispatch his first visit. Hewson's noteworthy contribution is his ability to make the complex understandable. This quality has been a hallmark of his novels, which combine artistic, religious and cultural elements, and send them swirling through a complex but readily understandable plot peopled by characters who, while foreign to American readers, easily earn their empathy. While Hewson's work is firmly rooted in the tradition of police procedural novels, he refuses to color within the lines; he instead quietly but firmly redrafts the boundary lines of the genre, combining poetic prose, exquisite plotting, and an inexhaustible supply of surprises to create a genre all his own.

THE VILLA OF MYSTERIES is the successor to 2003's A SEASON FOR THE DEAD, the second of what Hewson refers to as "The Rome Novels." Police Detective Nic Costa is back, newly returned to duty after several months' absence to recover from the death of his father as well as other events. Costa does not have much time to get his street legs back. An American couple looking for Roman artifacts in a peat bog discovers the body of a young woman named Eleanor Jamieson who vanished almost two decades previously.

The Italian police force and pathologist Teresa Lupo are still sorting out this discovery when Costa interjects himself into the middle of a situation in Campo dei Fiori, a crowded tourist destination. A woman is frantically seeking police assistance, insisting that her daughter has been abducted. The woman's daughter bears an uncanny, almost frightening, resemblance to Jamieson --- and her abduction has occurred nearly 16 years to the day of the anniversary of Jamieson's disappearance. It appears that both abductions, and Jamieson's murder, are tied to a cult of the god Dionysus. The truth, however, is both stranger and simpler than that.

Costa and Gianni Peroni, his new partner, find themselves in more of a reactive than a proactive position. It is Lupo who steps outside of her job description to obtain justice for one long-dead young woman and to hopefully rescue another. Yet, as the reader and all concerned discover, nothing is really as it seems. Hewson does not even attempt to explain the labyrinthine and uneasy connections between the Italian police and organized crime, and the always blurry line that is both a line of demarcation and commonality between the two. But he illustrates it so sharply through anecdotal description that one comes away with an understanding that is difficult to articulate yet easy to know.

Hewson does not wait until the end of the novel to begin reigning in his numerous plot lines. He chooses instead to introduce and resolve issues from beginning to end, so that at the conclusion of this magnificent work, there is no sense of a rush to resolution, even as --- unbeknownst to the reader --- there is much to be resolved.

But the depth of what Hewson has accomplished goes beyond his considerable plotting and narrative skills. For what Hewson has created in THE VILLA OF MYSTERIES may be arguably one of the most strongly and subtly feminist novels of recent note. The women at the beginning of this book are all victims; by the end, things are not the same. This is a work, and an author, of unforgettable stature.

wonderfully plotted mystery
By reader from newton, ma
As a reader of many, many mysteries, I'm not easily taken

in and caught up by plots any more, but this book is the

exception to the rule. I loved the setting (Rome), the

characters, and most of all the surprises that continued to

catch me off guard. This is my first Hewson mystery, and I

am looking forward to reading "Season of the Dead" very

soon.

Even better the second time around.
By R. B. Bernstein
David Hewson's second novel in what promises to be a first-rate series of mysteries set in Rome is even better than its predecessor, and that's saying a great deal about how good it is. Consistently entertaining, giving a wonderful feel for its Roman setting without larding it on with a trowel, with a splendid array of plausible and vivid characters, this book deserves the old cliche: "I couldn't put it down." The only flaw, and it's not all that much of a flaw, is that the climax is occasionally unclear, but I can't explain why without giving away a mass of vital plot details, so just read and enjoy.

A love story that spans eternity
By ilikebigbooksandicannotlie
Beautiful, compelling, and amazing. If you're a woman, love a great romance, adore sexy heroes and admire (and maybe envy a bit) the women who win their hearts, and you have a pulse... What are you still waiting for? You NEED to read this series!!!!

Best highlander series ever
By Amazon Customer
Best highlander series ever. A highlander out of time, and an over worked college student. Perfect chemistry for them and also danger around ever corner.
