Book #1--good basis for the Polk Street Series

Giff set this series off to a good start with this book 1. I read it when I was 9. It came in the mail from Weekly Reader Books (my dad sent away for those for me!) Every month I got books in the mail and this was one of them. At the time I didn't know it was a series, though.
A year after reading this book I could feel for Richard "Beast" when I, too, was left back (it was for circumstances beyond my control, but still!) In this book, Beast struggles to survive and fit in, suffers losing his friends, who advanced to the next grade and reject him. This book is so good!

The Boy Who Hated to Write (2nd edition)

The student has been retained and exhibits very serious behavior problems. In the last pages, he exerts some effort to help his class win an award. There is no mention of strategies he or his teachers used to address his learning problems. The character shows no emotional or learning growth at all, except for the miraculous turnaround in behavior.

A beast of a book

Reilly has a well-formed beginning and middle, but the end feels rushed and incomplete. So many different characters are introduced that there is little time to see them develop. The illustrations nicely complement the story and may help those with struggling imaginations or who read so slowly that they forget the story. The illustrations are spread through the text very well - it is never more than two or three pages before the next one. This means young readers will be turning pages more often and feel they are making progress. The story deals with some children who are sent out of the classroom for remedial reading. This may encourage readers older than my suggested late first to early third grade level.
Why 3 stars?:
The story is completely plot-driven. Even at this beginning stage of reading children are still capable of meaningful discussion of what they are reading, but this book doesn't provide much material for it. If kids don't associate the higher thinking that comes from reading, it will be viewed as a chore and they will no longer enjoy it. This book does not encourage students to get excited about reading, or share it with others.

Kindergarten-Grade 6-From the brilliant blue endpapers and lushly painted artwork to the lyrical words of the text, this book radiates the calmness of a summer day spent in a canoe. At first, the action seems slight-a man paddles around a lake-but as the words and pictures flow, the surrounding wildlife begins to reveal itself. Birds and insects skim the water, sunfish hover, and a pike shoots along, stopping all of the underwater action. Mallards swim by, foxes and raccoons come to the shoreline to drink, and a deer signals her fawn to come away. One of the qualities that moves this book beyond the ordinary nature description is the human figure, the observer, who sits with his paddle raised taking it all in. It is his thoughts that readers hear, and the rhythm of his language fluctuates as the scenes change. In the illustrations, the perspective is altered, looking from above, from a distance, or even under the water. Sometimes viewers see the man in the canoe, but at other times they seem to be looking through his eyes. The book is unified by glorious swathes of blue and green, and most of the paintings spread across double pages with bands of complementary colors running along the sides, both confining the pictures and adding a light touch. Full of sunlight and clear water, this book is for winter dreaming and summer doing.

The Paulsens' picture book offers a tranquil, meditative idyll that glides as easily as a canoe on still water. The beauty of a solitary day on a lake springs to life through poetic words and serene illustrations, which are appropriately hazy and luminous by turns. But while the protagonist lazily paddles and rests, the natural world bustles around him: fish dart and feed under water; animals bathe and hunt in the wood; birds and insects flit overhead. Recently my family moved in order to be closer to, and therefore be able to more fully enjoy the James River. Our new neighborhood includes a shared river access, featuring classic riverside accessories: a large wooden dock, lawn chairs and picnic tables, and a boating slip. This setting, combined with several surrounding acres of fields and woods, are enough to keep a child entertained for hours.

I know this to be true as this riverside location is the only place I can take my younger sister and not expect to be pestered to provide extraneous entertainment at all times - here she can find it all on her own. The occupation that she procures both on and in the river allows me to observe first hand what Gary Paulsen manages to so artfully capture in his children’s book Canoe Days – the wonder nature sparks in children.

Chronicling the day-long canoe journey of the narrator, Canoe Days details the immense variety of natural scenery that the narrator observes during his expedition - ranging from fish to lilies to dragonflies. The tone of this first person narrative mimics that of an explorer - hesitant but curious, cautious but intrigued, overall emphasizing the immense wonder felt by the narrator as he moves through nature in his canoe. As the story progresses, the reader experiences the excitement and wonder felt by the narrator as a new organism is discovered with every turn of a page, further demonstrating Paulsen’s representation of childlike wonder in the realm of nature.

However the overall point of Paulsen’s story is not to merely explain the wonder that children already feel in regards to nature, but rather to incite in them a new feeling that goes beyond mere curiosity: admiration and passion for nature.

Living in a world in which the value of nature is recklessly diminished, both indirectly through neglect, and directly, through the exhaustion of natural resources, it is vital that we begin to teach our children what it means to appreciate the natural world. Paulsen reflects on the wonder we initially feel in regards to nature, and then pushes readers to consider shaping this wonder into admiration and care.

Given that this is children’s book, this subject is carefully articulated, permitting young readers to grasp a complex topic. This task is accomplished largely by encouraging young readers to liken the value of the natural world to the value of humans through the familiarization of nature and humans. Natural scenery is frequently described in the story within the context of human experiences, for example referring to the area where the fish play as a “playground”, and the “cool green rooms” where the sunfish roam. This association of nature with familiar and seemingly human (and therefore, in the eye’s of children meaningful and important things) allows young readers to find the parallels that exist between the value of humans and the value of nature.

By drawing these similarities between the reader and the natural elements described in the book, Paulsen allows children to familiarize themselves with nature, and therefore feel more comfortable exploring and seeking experiences in nature. Allowing young readers to understand the beauty of nature inspires them to attempt to experience this first hand, and in turn, grown in appreciation for nature and thus accountability for its wellbeing. As the fate of the health of the Earth begins to grow more and more dire, any efforts, particularly literary ones such as Canoe Days, to forge a connection between children and nature will prove to be massively influential in building a platform upon which future endeavors to save the environment will be born.

A purely simple, beautiful book

At the very impressionable age of 12, my very eccentric friend dragged me out of bed one summer morning just as the sun was rising. She handed me an oar and we walked down to the lake shore wearing just our bathing suits into the stillness of the lake. We didn’t speak as we pushed the rowboat onto the glassy water and rowed ourselves to the middle of the lake. It was my first memory of how tangible peace potentially can be. Gary Paulsen’s book Canoe Days opens with this tangible peace with “the swish of a butterfly’s wing”: When wonder marries calm, when surprise marries stillness.
In that stillness “we are gone, the canoe and me” which gives you the feeling of being aboard his canoe and “become[ing] part of the sky” right along with the oarsman. And in experiences like this, describing it in words becomes a near impossibility which somehow Paulson manages by using compound words such as “airwater” and “skylake” that sum up that indescribable stillness – words that describe the lack of space between water and sky that ironically makes us to feel open and alive. And the book progresses in this way. Canoe Days begins in stillness: “the canoe slides in green magic without a ripple,” and slowly recognizes life, first below the water then small movements on the shore.
Along with Paulson’s prose, Ruth Wright Paulson’s paintings invite us into the setting, acutely feeling the “green” as it is woven throughout the book: “green magic”, “cool green rooms”, and “into the green depths”. These serene paintings in varying shades of light to deep green capture the cold murkiness that is ever present in fresh water that manages to feel clean despite the life that resides there.
While in the canoe we spot a mallard hen and her ducklings, a fawn and his mother, and a snake moving onto a lily pad which lends itself to the childlike wonder of nature. A description of a fox drinking, “soft laps with a pink tongue while the paddle waits, all still” encourages us to hold our breath while we observe this special moment. Accompanied by Ruth Wright Paulson’s paintings, these moments embody the balance between stillness and life.
When this happens – this kind of stillness and peace, it is so acute you become engulfed by this – consumed by the simplicity of it all. Gary Paulsen’s book Canoe Days manages to capture that perfection – that place of awe when everything feels purely simple.

A Perfect Summer Day

One beautiful memory I have of my time in Maine is learning how to kayak in the water near Freeport. Even though I was new to the sport, I especially remember watching the wildlife present all around me: the loons and seals in the water and the osprey and hawks in the air. I will never forget the majestic stare of the bald eagle perched on the limb of a pine tree.
Gary Paulsen takes his reader on such a journey in Canoe Days. Using poetic prose, Paulsen captures the mood of the day, the canoe “moving silently,” “in green magic without a ripple.” The lake is a “playground” where fish play, where the northern pike “moves like an arrow.” The water is a “window into a skylake.” The blended portmanteau skylake helps the reader to see the lake as less than a body of water, and more as a looking glass, a reflection of the aquatic world where the canoe “disappears like a ghost.” Paulsen not only takes us to the action beneath the surface of the lake, but he also observes the wildlife around the circumference—the deer, raccoon, and fox who are looking for sustenance; the mallard hen and her ducklings who are on an outing. They see the canoe only as “a log floating in the sun,” allowing the narrator and reader to become a silent observer of nature.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Ruth Wright Paulsen, whose acrylic paintings almost take center stage. The writing, though descriptive, focuses more on the action, whereas the paintings add the visual depth to the story. Here we have the animals looking directly out of the page, making a connection with the man in the canoe and ultimately with the reader. The font and type of the writing blends seamlessly into the paintings, just as the man and his canoe blend seamlessly into the natural world around him. The coolness and depth of the water become tangible, as each scene reveals the hidden life under the surface and the active life above it.
Canoe Days helps the reader to vicariously experience the idyllic summer day on the lake. As Paulsen writes, “the sun is on my back like a golden friend.” We the readers are also sharing the friend on the back, enjoying the canoe day. Lucky us.

I love anything Celtic

I love anything Celtic, time-travel, romance!! Karen Moning has captured all my loves in one series ... the Highlander Series. I don't really see these books as smutty steamy sex novels but make-you-feel-good love stories. I have enjoyed every single one of her books and I'm always anxiously scanning the bookshelves for a new one.

Degeus Is A Hero So Yummy, I Want Him For Breakfast!

NOTE: Read "Kiss of the Highlander" before you read this one. The characters will be a part of you from "Kiss", making "Dark Highlander" far more captivating. Drusten is the main hero in "Kiss", but Degeus definitely wins your heart as well. "Kiss" is an excellent story in it's own right. Don't miss it.
Dageus is everything you fantasize about. He's big, strong, brave, completely unselfish, romantic, and devoted to those he loves... yet he becomes dominant,wild, and passionate in bed. Yummy! These are some of the most erotic love scenes ever.
In 16th century Scotland, Degeus and his twim brother Drusten are members of the mystical Druids. Degeus is devastated when his twin brother is killed in a fire. He risks losing his own soul in exchange for his brother's life. Now he is tormented by 13 evil souls who are fighting his own good soul for his body. His only hope is to find a way to wash the evil ones from his body. If they win, he will become an evil power so great, the world will face destruction. Each time Degeus uses the evil ones' magic, they take over another piece of his being. He must use the magic to travel through time and steal ancient tomes that hold the information about the curse he is suffering.
Modern day historian,Chloe, is of Scotish decent. She has always dreamed of visiting the land of her ancestors. She is fascinated by Celtic antiquities. When her boss sends her to a rich man's penthouse, to loan him an ancient tome, she is amazed at his collection of artifacts. While snooping around his home, Chloe comes across some ancient tomes that have been stolen from local museums. Degeus catches her snooping in his room, and has no choice but to keep her until he can finish reading the tomes and return them to museums.
From the moment Degeus catches the pretty girl snooping under his bed, his mind can think of only one word: "Mine." He is instantly possessive of Chloe and can't let her go. Even when he returns the tomes to their owners, he wants to keep her. He convinces her to return to his home land, Scotland.
Over the next weeks, the couple travel Scotland, and they travel through time. They are franticallly searching for a way to wash Degeus of the evil ones who are slowly consuming him. Chloe's love is the one thing that keeps Degeus strong. Still, the evil souls are becoming more powerful. When enemies kidnap Chloe, Degeus must use magic to save her life. He knows that it will mean giving the evil ones so much power, he will no longer be able to fight them. He has only one choice: give in to the evil magic to save Chloe, then take his own life to keep the evil ones from using his body to destroy all of mankind.
Degeus is a hero who gives all of himself to save the ones he loves. Twice, he has sacrifised himself. Once for his brother's life, then again for Chloe and mankind. When Chloe returns home with her heart aching over the loss of Degeus, she learns that he had gone to great lengths, months earlier, to insure that she would be taken care of should he die. He also left her a note to let her know of his eternal devotion. Yet all of the riches and comforts in the world can not replace him. Her heart can not give up hope that a miracle may still be possible. Time travel is no longer possible. Is there anyone who can give Degeus his life back?
Karen Moning's writting isn't totally smooth. Often, you have to reread a sentence to catch what she is saying. However, her story lines, characters, love scenes and mystic edge are excellent. There was no way I could put this book down until I finished it.

I started reading Karen's stories starting with the fever series. I loved everyone of them!! The Highlander series doesn't disappoint one bit. If you love fantasy and especially romance this series is a must! Love you Karen for giving me hours of pleasure reading your material!!

Wonderful!

This book is well written and enjoyable; about 2 friends who always seem to get in trouble. You can learn a lot from this book. Beast and Matthew think they're in deep deep trouble when the school's rabbit-on-wheels (for the Easter play) "runs amuck" and loses it's head!! Parts of this book, like all of Giff's delightful books, made me giggle. She is a wonderful author...Beast thinks if he's quiet about the rabbit, the problem will go away but one thing leads to another and he accidentally mooshes his sister's jewelry box and feels terrible. Besides that he has suspicions that she is planning a party for him. Normally reading these books I saw his sister Holly as being like an obnoxious, bossy old cow, but in this book you see her becoming a good sister and he confides in her about the "Monster Rabbit running amuck". Wonderful book and character devlopment, however I think Holly still should've had a party for Richard since he was so depressed that the party she was planning was really for her class!

A good book for children learning to read chapter books

This was one of the first chapter books I've read. The beginning of the story was a bit confusing because Richard, the main character, says "the beast is home!" He says the beast is home because people call him the beast! So the beast in the story is a little boy.
In the story, it's almost Richard's birthday. He thinks that Holly, his big sister, and her friend Joanne, are making a party for him. [...]
Richard and his best friend Matthew have to help bring a rabbit to the kindergarten spring play.
It was a fun book to read.

HE AND HIS BEST FRIEND MATTHEW JACKSON HAD TO MOVE THE HUGE RABBIT ON WHEELS ONTO THE STAGE FOR THE SPRING ASSEMBLY. Grade 5-7-- Eleven-year-old Clay Garrity's family had been what most people would consider an average family--until the magazine his father worked for went out of business and he couldn't find another job over the next year. Clay then experienced the gradual decline from that normal existence to one of abandonment by his father, the move to a welfare hotel and, at the beginning of the story, the disappearance of his mother who, with the added burden of a difficult pregnancy, is unable to cope with the daily struggle for survival. Clay eventually comes to a small park scornfully called "Monkey Island" for the homeless who live there. Here he is taken in by two men who share the wooden crate that offers them some shelter from the cold November winds. These three become a sort of family, holding on to some sense of humanity in a brutal and brutalizing world. For all of its harshness, Monkey Island is also a romanticized view of the world. Although Clay is not spared the hunger, fear, illness, and squalor of the streets, there is still a distancing from the more immediate types of violence that exist there. He is always on the edge of such danger, but no incidents actually touch him. In the end, it is pneumonia that brings him back into the social services system. After ten days in the hospital, the boy is placed in a foster home and shortly thereafter is reunited with his mother and baby sister in a conclusion that readers desire but that may strain credibility. This is a carefully crafted, thoughtful book, and one in which the flow of language both sustains a mood of apprehension and encourages readers to consider carefully the plight of the homeless, recognizing unique human beings among the nameless, faceless masses most of us have learned not to see. --Kay E. A fine author considers what it means to be a homeless 11- year-old in N.Y.C. Clay Garrity's dad, an art director, was out of work; Clay's mother trained for a good job--but it wasn't enough, especially with a baby coming. Unable to cope, Dad disappeared; now, without warning, Clay's distraught mother has also abandoned him, leaving him in an unsavory welfare hotel. When a neighbor suggests calling the police, Clay bolts, afraid that becoming a foster child would mean losing his mother forever. He lands in a park with Buddy, a hard-working young black man who can't earn enough for a rent deposit, and with Calvin, a retired teacher who lost everything in a fire. Weeks later, their fragile existence is destroyed by an invasion of raging toughs (``the stump people'') who demolish their meager, hard-won amenities and scatter the park's inhabitants. Indirect results include Calvin's death; Clay, weak from malnutrition and exposure, is hospitalized. Focusing on a child who has been secure and well-loved intensifies the impact of his deprivations and suggests that Clay's cruel experiences could happen to anyone. It also allows a subtly upbeat ending: herself again after the baby's birth, Clay's mother finds him, and he begins to forgive her. A wonderful story, rich in imagry

I am so thankful that I found this book. I read it in one sitting and am looking forward to sharing it with my 6th-graders. Many of my students are only a few steps away from Clay's street hut. It is for them that I want to shed a light of hope. I think this book can help me do that for them. It is also a great book to read to children who have what they need to stay warm and well-fed. It will afford them the opportunity to get to know someone their age that must go without and take chances that have very uncertain outcomes.

Review of Monkey Island

Paula Fox does an amazing job depicting homelessness in her book Monkey Island. Clay Garrity, an eleven year old boy, is left to fend for himself after his pregnant mother disappears. He meets two homeless men, Buddy and Calvin, who become his new family on the street. They care for him as best they can but the cold and lack of food are too much for Clay and he has to be taken to a hosiptal. Now he has to depend on Social Services to find out what happened to his mother and his new sibling.
I thought that Fox's description of Clay's life on the street was exceptional. Her language really flowed nicely and I felt like I was experiencing what Clay was. Fox also had the major dramatic question, "What happened to Clay's mother?". This question was the driving force while I read this book. I was so intrigued that I finished the book in one sitting.
The only problem I had with this book was the ending. I didn't think it was realistic. Fox had all of these well portrayed, complex issues throughout the book and the ending just seemed very simplistic compared to everything else.
However, overall I really enjoyed this book. I thought that it was well written, that language flowed together, and that it provided a realistic look at what life would be like on the streets.
I think this book would be a great tool to help teachers to portray homelessness and/or poverty to their students. This book would really force children to look at and understand the social problems that our society has and help them to relate to, and sympathize with, these problems.

Abandoned Child Finds Home Again

Young Clay Garrity has been left behind. His father lost his job and left the family, including his pregnant mother. Now, for whatever reason, his mother has also left. Clay must deal with living on his own in fifth grade. He stops going to school and spends a lot of time scared and lonely. Another family moves into his apartment, and he has no place left for himself. This is a realistic tale of what it might mean to be a homeless kid in a big city. No bad language, and Clay does some growing up.

Might open the eyes of spoiled children that another, sorrier world exists, and that the homeless are people too.

Girls In Tears

I'll type in the blurb so you get an exact description of the book: Ellie's glorious romancs with Russell is teetering on the rocks. Magda's lost her pet and is desperately upset (though the others didn't even know she still had a hamster!). And Nadine is fed up with the other two lecturing her about meeting someone on the internet-she thinks an e-mail boyfriend is wonderful!
Buckets of tears are wept and hundreds of tissues are sniffled into. Can the girls' friendship survive these testing times?
I personally love this book, I love all of Jacqueline Wilsons books. It really relates to teenage girls, it's almost as if she has the mind of a teenager. I've read this book twice. I've done the same with girls out late, girls under pressure, girls in love, the lottie project, suitcase kid, the dare game&the story of tracy beaker. I also love watching the tv series Tracy Beaker. It's great. Jacqueline Wilson is my favourite author, and I'm sure if you start reading her great books she'll be yours too!

Girls in Tears by Jaqeline Wilson is a great book for someone who is all into the life and drama of being a teenager. Ellie, Nadine, and Magda are the best of friends. They are thicker than peanut butter. Nothing can break them apart....until Ellie starts going out with her new boyfriend, Russel. According to Ellie, Russel is a dream come true. So much of a dream come true that she ditches her friends to be with him. " ' Don't friends come before boys? That's what you're always drumming us into' , says Nadine."(27). After Magda's hamster dies and Nadine has been flirting with a 19 year old on the internet, Ellie begans to wonder what kind of friends she really has. " Magda and Nadine have formed an exclusive twosome behind my back." She also begins to feel alone because her boyfriend enters Ellie's cartoon character, Ellie Elephant, in a contest behind her back. And on top of that Ellie and her step- mom are suspicous of her dad having an affair. After questioning her love for Russel several times, and being excluded from Magda and Nadine, Ellie meets this " Mr. Perfect" at the grocery store. His name is Kevin. Turns out he is gay, but still Ellie finds him very nice. Even though life isn't the best right now Ellie agrees to accompany Russel to a party. At the party Russel is acting like such a jerk!! He is Treating Ellie like some kind of ortament. She is Fed up so she begans to drink. After her friends have put her to sleep she wakes up to find Russel making out with some other chick!! Turns out the chick is Magda!! Ellie leaves immediately, drunk as can be. She wanders off until she is meets up with Kevin who kindly takes her home. Days go bye and she has ignored Russell, Magda, and Nadine. Until one day Magda comes knocking at her door. " ' You know this guy Ellis, the Internet one. Well she's meeting him tonight.' " (142) So trying to avoid the issue at the party, Ellie agrees to go with Magda to spy on Nadine. On the way there, Magda explains what happened at the party, and they make up. After waiting for a while they finally see Nadine and...Ellis? Turns out Ellis is much older. So Magda and Ellie go and scare him off. they comfort Nadine and they all head back home. Before Ellie goes home she stops by her dads office to see what's really going on. Turns out he was only painting and never said anything about it. Later, Ellie recieves a letter from Russell asking her if they can start over at Mcdonald's where they first met. Ellie goes but she is aware that things will be different. I Encourage all people in highschool to read this book because it really deals with some of the issues of being a teenager.

I am not the type of teenager who has had a lot of boyfriends, but I felt that this book was very.. different to the kind of relationships that I know that my friends have had.

Wilson seems to forget that teen girls that are fourteen or turning fourteen often have pretend boyfriends - meaning that they just say that he is their boyfriend - yet never really having a relationship with them.

I understand that snogging (horrible word) etc are now, unfortunately, common for teens of that age. But it was overdone in the book.

Saying that, it was a good read - and I'm glad that Wilson told teens not to meet up with people that you meet online. It was a good point to make.

Hard to believe, but there was a time when the word "lawyer" wasn't synonymous with "criminal," and the idea of a law firm controlled by the Mafia was an outlandish proposition. This intelligent, ensnaring story came out of nowhere--Oxford, Mississippi, where Grisham was a small-town lawyer--and quickly catapulted to the top of the bestseller list, with good reason. Mitch McDeere, the appealing hero, is a poor kid whose only assets are a first-class mind, a Harvard law degree, and a beautiful, loving wife. When a Memphis law firm makes him an offer he really can't refuse, he trades his old Nissan for a new BMW, his cramped apartment for a house in the best part of town, and puts in long hours finding tax shelters for Texans who'd rather pay a lawyer than the IRS. Nothing criminal about that. He'd be set for life, if only associates at the firm didn't have a funny habit of dying, and the FBI wasn't trying to get Mitch to turn his colleagues in. The tempo and pacing are brilliant, the thrills keep coming, and the finish has a wonderful ironic flourish. What's more, it is all accomplished with just a few whiffs of the heavy duty violence and sex that kick many cops-and-robbers stories along today. Set in Tennessee, the Cayman Islands, and other southerly points, the action moves briskly, relying on character types that are quickly made likable or repulsive. The author, a Mississippi-based criminal defense lawyer, has in this first novel set a daringly high standard, one that his readers will hope he can reach again and again. The thrilling novel that made Grisham a household name

The Firm was published in 1991, and almost overnight John Grisham became a household name and a force to be reckoned with in the realm of fiction. There must be something in the water down in Oxford, Mississippi; while Grisham is certainly no Faulkner, he is a man who knows how to make a novel come alive and ensnare any reader who comes along. I really do not care for lawyer-type novels as a general rule, and the fact that Grisham makes such stories so gripping and fascinating has me quite in awe of his talents. Mitch McDeere (whom many may still envision as Tom Cruise, since he played in the role in the movie based on this novel) is a highly intelligent yet monetarily challenged law student finishing up his degree with high honors at Harvard. Holding serious offers from prestigious Chicago and Wall Street law firms for his services, he decides to go ahead and hear the pitch from a smaller law firm in Memphis. What he hears is an offer he cannot believe and cannot refuse. A starting salary significantly higher than he would make elsewhere, promises of large bonuses for passing the bar exam and succeeding on the job, an ascension to partner in as short a time as a decade, a new house with a miniscule mortgage rate, a brand new BMW, and other perks soon have Mitch and his wife Abby settling down in Memphis to enjoy a life of luxury (albeit with hard work on his part). The firm really seems to care about Mitch and his family, wanting happy marriages with several children, to a degree that has Abby a little suspicious. Mitch passes the bar exam, and life is great, despite the fact he is working eighty hours or more a week. Then an FBI agent comes to see him, dropping hints of nefarious dealings at the law firm, asking him for help. Thus begins a journey in which Mitch must first decide whether to risk the lives of himself and his wife to violate his legal oaths and sell out the Mafia-controlled law firm, or take his chances, make his millions, and hope the feds don�t find enough evidence to eventually land him and all of his coworkers in prison. It is really an exciting story, as the McDeeres have to deal with and evade both the feds and the Mafia in their efforts to somehow bring down the firm without sacrificing their own lives.
I found the schemes Mitch employed on his behalf were quite inventive and plausible, but as the novel progressed in the later stages I found myself wondering how the Mafia could really be incompetent enough in their surveillance to keep losing track of Mitch at crucial times. I can understand the feds having a little trouble staying a step behind him, but you would think that the Mafia could have put an end to all of these games (and to Mitch) long before he got into a position to bring them down. Also, Abby�s transition from a housewife who wishes her husband wasn�t spending all of his time at work to a wily assistant to her scared and scheming husband is a little abrupt. I also had a hard time completely liking the protagonist after a certain indiscretion on his part early on. I�m not complaining, though, because the tension of the novel ratchets up nicely in the final stages and kept me turning the pages with bated breath. I haven�t read Grisham�s more recent novels, so I can�t say whether or not the quality of his writing has gone down over the years. What I can say, having read both A Time to Kill and The Firm, Grisham�s first two novels, is that the man really and truly had �it� at the start of his career. The action never ebbs, the story never bogs down, and the reader finds himself hanging on for dear life and loving every minute of it as he/she follows the course of whatever events Grisham chooses to relate.

Chapter One

Runing Tall

Just after two a.m., Steve Solomon sprinted along the seawall, chasing the man on the Jet Ski. Black wet suit. Black helmet. Dark visor. A Darth Vader look.

The man shot Steve the bird, then shoved the throttle wide open. The Jet Ski jolted airborne, splashed down, and roared along the channel toward Biscayne Bay.

"Stop him, Uncle Steve!"

Bobby, urging him on. Steve had ordered his twelve-year-old nephew to stay on the dock, but the boy was running, too, trailing behind.

"You can catch him!"

Sure, kiddo. Leave it to me to capture the bad guy, rescue the dolphins, save the world.

A quarter-moon hung like a scythe over the Bay. Cetacean Park should have been quiet. The channel should have rippled placidly in the moist breeze, the air scented with salt and seaweed. Instead, the Jet Ski growled like an angry beast, belching greasy vapors in its wake.

Steve picked up his pace. Years earlier, he had been the fastest Jewish kid on Pine Tree Drive, admittedly a group with more shleppers than sprinters.

He figured there was one chance to catch the man. The channel ran straight for three hundred yards, then dog-legged right for another two hundred yards before reaching open water. He could cut diagonally across an empty field, the shortest leg of the triangle, and intercept the Jet Ski at the inlet to the Bay.

Steve looked back over his shoulder. Bobby had stopped along the seawall, either because he was pooped or because he was belatedly following his uncle's orders.

Steve ran tall, back straight, shoulders relaxed, head still. He had always been fast over short distances. Stealing bases at U of M, a painless ninety-foot sprint. But lousy at distance running. No patience for the training, no tolerance for the pain. Before Victoria, his live-in girlfriend, he'd been a sprinter in his personal life, too. Hundred-yard dashes, hundred-hour relationships.

Flying now, feet barely touching the ground. Hopped over a fallen pond frond, never breaking stride. Shot a look at the Jet Skier, the dive knife sheathed at his ankle. Calculated time and distance. And possible injuries.

Knife wound, concussion, drowning.

They would reach the intersection of channel and Bay simultaneously.

Steve hit the embankment and drove off his back foot. He launched into space, arms spread like wings, soaring toward the man on the Jet Ski, thinking . . .

Just what the hell am I doing?

Chapter Two

From Bedroom to Bay

One hour before leaping into the darkness of Biscayne Bay, Steve was locked in the spooning position with his girlfriend and law partner, Victoria Lord, her hair tickling his nose, her sweet scent fueling his dreams. The phone jarred him awake. Wade Grisby at Cetacean Park.

Victoria stirred as Steve pulled on his Hurricanes running shorts and a T-shirt with the slogan: "What If the Hokey Pokey Is What It's All About?"

"Bobby," Steve whispered. Explanation enough.

She rolled over, her blond hair splayed across the pillow. "Dolphins or stars?"

Steve understood the shorthand. Bobby had broken into the planetarium the night of a meteor shower. Lately, the kid had been sneaking out of the house to play with the dolphins on Key Biscayne.

He stroked Victoria's cheek. "Dolphins. Wade Grisby caught him talking to Spunky and Misty."

Talking and listening. Bobby believed he could understand dolphinese, as he called it. The boy was even writing a dictionary of the clicks, whistles, and moans that came from their blowholes.

Victoria propped up on one elbow. In her sheer black negligee, with her sleepy eyes, she looked like a star in one of the old black-and-white movies. Lauren Bacall, about to entice her man back to bed.

"Steve, I just can't get enough of you."

Instead, Victoria said, "Steve, maybe it's time Bobby saw a therapist."

"I'll talk to him. He'll be okay."

Steve leaned over and kissed her, Victoria exhaling a warm breath. Asleep before he was out the door.

Every day another drama, Steve thought, driving across the Rickenbacker Causeway. Getting Bobby out of another jam. This didn't sound as serious as climbing on a catwalk over I-95 to spray paint an exit sign. Bobby had removed the apostrophe from the word "Beaches' " because the typographical error drove him nuts. The kid was sweet and loveable, and in some mysterious way, a genius. But he wasn't socially developed, and lately he'd been acting out.

Breaking curfew. Trespassing. Keeping secrets.

Steve had asked Bobby if everything was okay, if he was having problems, if he wanted to talk about anything.

"Yep."

"Nope."

"Huh?"

Typical adolescent. But unusual for a kid who was ordinarily so verbal. Steve wondered if Bobby's central nervous system disorders were in play. A little klutzy, a lot brainy. The kid seesawed between semi-autistic behavior and savantlike abilities of memory and language feats. "Paradoxical functional facilitation," the doctors called it. Bobby could create anagrams in his head. But lately, his wordplay had been limited to chirping sounds at the breakfast table. Dolphinese.

Steve pulled his Mustang convertible into the empty lot at the bayside attraction. Signs pointed toward the bottlenose dolphin channel, the killer whale tank, the indoor aquarium.

Steve hustled toward the channel. Wondering if he'd been too lax with Bobby, too reluctant to discipline him. Grounding his nephew didn't seem to work. The kid just crawled out his bedroom window and took off.

Steve followed a path of palm trees to the channel. Spotlights on metal poles illuminated the dark water. He figured Grisby would be in his small dockside office, lecturing Bobby on the dangers of breaking into other people's businesses.

That's when Steve heard the roar of the engine. Spotted Darth Vader. Totally surreal.

The Jet Ski carved a turn, kicked up spray, and slowed near the dock. The rider glared at Steve. Early twenties with a pugnacious jaw and cruel mouth. Raising a fist above his head, he shouted, "Liberation!"

What the hell's going on? Where's Grisby? Where's Bobby?

"Bobby!"

Steve heard sneakered footsteps on the concrete dock, his nephew running toward him, all flying elbows and knees, a skinny arm pointing at the masked man on the Jet Ski. "He's stealing Spunky and Misty!"

The man cruised close to the seawall and bared his teeth. "Freedom for the animals!"

So that's it. The guy's a dolphin-kidnapping, animal-libbing, eco-terrorist asshole.

Steve was all for animal rights. But not burning down labs. Or bombing research centers. Or terrorizing scientists. If a few rats had to die to find a cure for cancer--well, it was a trade-off that made sense.

The man gave Steve the finger, gunned the Jet Ski, and headed out the channel toward the Bay.

"Stop him, Uncle Steve!"

Chapter Three

Call Me Fishmeal

One hour before Bobby Solomon begged his uncle to stop Darth Vader from stealing the two dolphins, the boy had climbed a chain-link fence, sneaked across a concrete dock, and crept over a catwalk to a floating wooden platform.

Praying he wouldn't be caught.

Uncle Steve would be so pissed. But Bobby had decided to take the risk.

I need to talk to Misty and Spunky.

His best friends.

Waiting for their signal, Bobby sprawled on his back. He let his eyes grow accustomed to the dark. In a moment, he spotted the constellation Sagittarius in the clear night sky.

A splash, then a rapid-fire click-creak-click. A second splash and a familiar high-pitched whistle.

Misty and Spunky saying hello.

They were the stars at Cetacean Park. Spunky was the color of a blue-steel revolver, with a long beak and a gray belly. His fluke--the wing-shaped paddle at the end of his tail--was oversize, powering his giant leaps. He weighed about 250 pounds, depending on how much mackerel he'd had for breakfast. Misty, his girlfriend, had a sleek, silvery-blue body with a pink belly. She loved to be rubbed at the base of her dorsal fin.

Bobby put two fingers to his lips and whistled. Two short blasts. "Hi guys."

Spunky slapped the water with a fin, splashing Bobby. The Spunkster joking around.

No tanks to confine them, the two dolphins lived in a channel that ran to Biscayne Bay, a steel gate blocking their path to open water. Bobby swam with the dolphins, fed them, played with them. Even watched them have sex, belly-to-belly.

Not an everyday sighting. Not like seeing Pamela Anderson or Paris Hilton do the big nasty on video.
Pennants strung across the channel crackled in the sea breeze. The park had been closed for hours, but sugary songs about a thousand years old still poured from the speakers. Barbra Streisand was ordering someone not to rain on her parade. Barbra Streisand. SAD BREAST BRAIN.

So easy. You just picture the letters, and they fly around and anagrammatize themselves. Bobby thought in pictures and sounds, just like the dolphins. He could remember almost everything he'd ever seen or heard.

For the past year, he'd been listening to the sounds coming from Spunky's and Misty's blowholes, trying to untangle their language. Building a dictionary of dolphin talk. The clicks and squeaks, moans and whistles all meant something, but you had to be patient. You had to really listen and remember the patterns. Tonight, he hoped to add a few new phrases to his notebook. Then he'd bicycle home, sneak back into the house without waking Uncle Steve and Victoria, and catch some z's before school.

Earlier tonight, he'd told Victoria a big fat fib. More than one, really. She'd been cooking meat loaf, filled with onions and dripping with Worcestershire an...

Dolphins' Advocate

Having foiled an animal activist's attempt to free a pair of trained dolphins, Steve Solomon finds himself morally obligated to defend the naive activist against a felony murder charge. As the activist's uncle, D.A. Ray Pincher is conflicted out and calls on his former employee, Victoria Lord, to prosecute. Can Solomon and Lord overcome their professional and personal conflict to get at the truth?

All the Solomon vs. Lord novels show Levine's talent for layering and then unfurling mystery, yet each adventure is memorably different from the last, satisfying returning fans and winning new ones.

Save the Dolphins!

After writing a set of fun books featuring lawyer Jake Lassiter, Paul Levine seemed to disappear for years; finally, a couple years back, he returned with his Solomon vs. Lord books, featuring Steve Solomon (in many ways, a slightly more responsible version of Lassiter) and his lover/law partner Victoria Lord. Trial & Error is the fourth novel in this series and it is as good as the others.

In this novel, Solomon gets involved with stopping animal liberator Gerald Nash out to free a couple dolphins from a water park. It'd be a minor crime except one of the Nash's partners was killed and now Nash is charged with murder. Despite his involvement with the initial arrest, Solomon winds up being Nash's lawyer.

Unfortunately, Nash is related to the State Attorney, so an independent prosecutor is required, and ex-prosecutor Lord is recruited. Neither Solomon nor Lord will back off, so the two lovers are pitted against each other in court. Solomon's aggressive, bend-the-rules approach to trials is completely different from Lord's intelligent by-the-book methods. (In fact, their first contest against each other, in the book Solomon vs. Lord, wound up completely flattening her.)

Though they share the billing, it is clear that Solomon is the central character of these books. As with the earlier books, the formula is essentially the same: two polar-opposite personalities fight over their approaches to a crime until they work together to bring about a solution. It is Levine's strength that he can make this formula repeatedly work, though he will eventually need to develop things further to keep things from getting stale. In Trial & Error, however, things remain fresh and this is an entertaining addition to the series.

Welcome back, Solomon and Lord!

Trial and Error marks the return of Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, domestic partners as well as law partners at this point in their lives. Steve's much-loved 12-year-old nephew Bobby is communing with his friends, two dolphins who reside at a local water park one balmy night in South Florida when ecoterrorists apparently decide to free the creatures. Steve is called to the scene and arrives in time to nab one of the men, while a second is shot by the park's owner. In the aftermath, Victoria gets pressed into service to prosecute the case against the man Steve brought down, while unknown to her Steve at the same time is hired to represent the defendant, charged with felony murder since his illegal act resulted in a man's death. The details of that death don't quite add up in Steve's eyes - the man had a shotgun trained on him and the police were on their way when he allegedly went for his gun. The owner of the marine park then shot him, twice, at pointblank range. The ensuing trial wreaks havoc on Steve and Victoria's lives.

As always with this series, the courtroom scenes are a delight to read, and to visualize. The trial features a judge who has court papers delivered to him not by a clerk but by a model railroad car. And the classic Steve-the-Shark Solomon antics are, of course, ever present. Bobby, a boy who `seesawed between semi-autistic behavior and savant-like abilities of memory and language feats,' plays a pivotal role. The author's reliable humor is also present, making this fast-paced and well-plotted book another excellent entry in this series.
