She’s not Miss Marple. Her friends are no Charlie’s Angels. Nevertheless, 75-year-old Gladdy Gold and her gang of eccentric Fort Lauderdale retirees are out, about, and hunting down a killer–one who is silently stalking them.

Selma Beller was the first to go–but Gladdy and her neighbors never suspected murder until another of their friends died in an eerily similar way. Now a handsome young detective won’t listen to them, Hy Binder won’t stop telling them dirty jokes, and crazy old Greta Kronk is doing everything humanly possible to make herself into a suspect. But amid the endless rounds of poolside kibitzing, early-bird specials, bittersweet memories, and interminable grocery-shopping trips, Gladdy and her gals are about to discover how the murders are being committed. And when it comes to catching this culprit–time really is running out….

Review
“Gladdy Gold is a treasure, Miss Marple in Yiddish.  Salty. Sassy. Sunny.”–Carolyn Hart

"If getting old is this much fun, maybe I won't mind! Miss Marple, move over! Gladdy's Gladiators are a hoot! Rita Lakin's witty romp through a Florida retirement community is just the thing for what ails you!" –Parnell Hall, author of Stalking the Puzzle Lady

“My great aunt once told me, ‘Getting old is no fun.’ She obviously had never met Gladdy Gold! A fine debut mystery, full of humor, pathos, and even--romance. I hope to see many more.”–Robin Hathaway, author of The Doctor Rocks the Boat

Gladdy Gets Going

Hello. Let me introduce myself. I'm Gladdy Gold. Actually, Gladys. I'm a self-proclaimed P.I. That's right, a private eye. Operating out of Fort Lauderdale. When did I get into the P.I. biz? As we speak. My credentials? More than thirty years of reading mysteries. Miss Marple and Miss Silver are my heroines.

In case you were expecting someone like what's-her-name with her "A" is for this, "B" is for that--you know who I mean, working her way all the way to Z--well, that's not me. I'll be lucky if I make it to the end of this book. After all, I am seventy-five.

You think seventy-five is old? Maybe, if you're twenty, it's ancient, but if you're fifty, it doesn't seem as old as it used to. And if you're ninety, well, seventy-five seems like a kid. You ought to see those spry ninety-year-old alter kuckers trying to hit on me for a date. When I look in the mirror, I don't see that older, faded, wrinkled stranger who barely resembles someone I once knew. I see a gangly, pretty, eager seventeen-year-old, marvelously alert and alive with glistening brown hair and hazel eyes.

Did you know that when you get older, and the brain cells start to turn on you, the nouns are the first to go?

For example, "what's-her-name" I just threw at you. I meant Sue Grafton, and this time it only took about two minutes for my brain synapses to make the connection and pull her name out of the cobwebs of my mind. Sometimes it takes days. All the while, it was on the tip of my tongue. My poor tongue must be exhausted from all the information I keep stored there.

Hey, you young ones--laugh. Wait 'til you get to be my age. Then the laugh will be on you. You'll ask the same questions we all ask: Where did the years go? How did they go by so fast? And even worse--where did all the money go?

Enough with all the philosophy. The question for now is how did I get into this private-eye racket? Before I retired, I was a librarian, so if you say this is a strange career move, I would certainly agree.

I was minding my own business in Lanai Gardens, Phase Two, building Q, apartment 317 on West Oakland Park Boulevard, Lauderdale Lakes, when a few of my neighbors died suddenly. Considering that the youngest of us is seventy-one and the oldest eighty-six, this is not something unexpected. I mean, everybody is on the checkout line. For example, we used to have five tables of canasta: now we're down to one. The Men's Sports Club used to fill four cars on Sunday for their trip out to Hialeah: now the only members left are Irving Weiss and his pal, Sol, from Phase Three. Even the nags that broke the guys' wallets have gone to thoroughbred heaven.

As I started to say--I was beginning to suspect foul play.

I am convinced that these deaths to which I am referring are not natural. There is a killer stalking Lanai Gardens. Nobody believes me, certainly not the police, but I intend to prove it. But first you need to meet the rest of the gang.

2

Walking

It's seven a.m. on a beautiful, very typical Friday morning in paradise. As usual I wake up a minute before the alarm goes off. I start my coffee perking--a vice I will not give up. I take out my one slice of whole wheat bread, pop it in the toaster. Get out my one teaspoon of sugar and my one-percent low-fat milk and I am ready to "seize the day."

I allow myself twenty minutes to work on the unfinished Sunday crossword that never leaves my kitchen table. I used to do the puzzle, in ink, on the morning it arrived. Now, it can take as long as a week to dredge up answers from my disobedient brain. Frustrating, but you do not give up anything that affords you pleasure at this time in life.

Lanai Gardens is situated in one of the many sprawling apartment complexes in this part of southeast Florida. A lot of people think of Fort Lauderdale as this ritzy community on the water, or the place made famous by all those college kids who take their clothes off on Spring Break--but that's not where we live.

Our condo isn't fancy, but it's pretty nice with its peach stucco buildings (just beginning to peel), swaying palm trees (look out for the falling coconuts), well-tended lawns (when the gardener shows up), pools and Jacuzzis, shuffleboard courts, duck ponds (watch your step!), and recreation rooms.

Now, into a pair of sweats, and I'm ready to begin the morning workout, such as it is. It's eight a.m. and my fellow residents are coming to life.

We used to go to the air-conditioned malls for our morning stroll, but not after reading those articles in the newspapers about older women being killed. Now we've decided to exercise at home. Exercise? Fast walking, slow walking, shuffling, barely moving at all; whatever the body will endure.

I'm the first one out on the third-floor walkway to warm up. And that's the signal for all the others to rush out.

My sister, Evvie Markowitz, is always the next one out. While I am in the Q building (Q for Quinsana), she lives across the way in apartment 215 in P building (P for Petunia. The builders were big on flowers). She refers to herself as my kid sister. Seventy-three to my seventy-five. We don't look anything like each other. I am taller. She is heavier. (We're both shorter than we used to be.) Before we turned gray, she was a redhead; I, a brunette. I was the scholarly one; she the dynamic, dramatic one. I was the plain one; she was the beauty. This dictum came down from our well-meaning but unsophisticated immigrant mother who didn't understand what damage such labels could cause. It set the course for both our lives. We never really became friends until I moved down here.

Evvie starts her own warm-ups. She always says the same thing every morning, calling out to me over the tops of the cars parked between our buildings. "Glad, how did you sleep?"

"Pretty good," I call back.

"I only had to get up three times last night," she says.

"Don't complain. Five times for me!" This from Ida Franz, our whirling dervish, who pops out of apartment 319 in my building and fairly leaps into pace with me. Ida is seventy-one, with a body that's compact and wiry. Her salt-and-pepper hair is always in a tight bun which threatens to pull her face off her head. Her back is ramrod straight, which Evvie says is so she won't drop the chip on each shoulder. "And the last time was at three a.m. It didn't pay to go back to bed after that."

"So what did you do?" Evvie calls out from across the way, knowing full well what Ida will say.

"I called my son in L.A. He's still up at midnight."

Evvie makes a familiar disgusted gesture, flapping her arms. We are all used to Ida trying to make her children love her, a lost cause. She's the one who calls them; they never call her. And because her children make her crazy, Ida makes us crazy.

I hear what I hear every morning: Sophie, calling from her kitchen window. "Yoo-hoo, I'm coming. I'm coming. Wait for me!" Trust me. She'll be last one out.

Routine is very important to us. Ida, the perpetual wet blanket, says it's because we're all in our second childhood. Except for Sophie, who she insists never grew out of her first one.

Now the door to apartment 216 opens across the way in Evvie's building. Bella Fox, who is eighty-three, gingerly steps out.

"Good morning," she whispers.

The girls call Bella "the shadow" because she's forever trailing one step behind us. We are always afraid of losing her, because she is so forgettable. She's tiny, not even five feet, and she wears pale colors that add to her seeming invisibility. But I'm on to Bella. She may seem shy, but in her own timid little way she's not afraid to speak her piece. She says what she wants and she gets what she wants. "Hi, gang! Your personal trainer is here! Everybody ready?" This is from Francie Charles, calling up to us as she rounds the corner from her building.

Her arrival is the signal for all of us to go downstairs and meet on the ground floor. Then we walk together along a shady path that winds around the building.

Francie, who will be seventy-eight tomorrow, was a real beauty when she was young. Tall, elegant, and classy, a model in her younger New York days, she is still beautiful. She's our real athlete, the one who got us all started in this somewhat anemic form of exercise. "Something is better than nothing," she is always telling us. She is also our health nut, lecturing on the right way to eat, although no one really can, or wants to, change the bad habits of a lifetime. Francie's only weakness is advertised by her favorite sweatshirt, "Death by Chocolate," given to her by her adoring grandchildren. She is wearing it today.

"How is everyone?" she chirps. "Isn't it a glorious day? Aren't we all glad to be alive!" As grumpy as Ida is, that's how cheerful Francie is. The perpetual optimist. She makes every day a gift. If it wasn't for Francie, I'd have left Florida years ago.

Bella begins taking slow, mincing steps--her version of exercise--along the path, apologizing every time anyone passes her.

"Stop apologizing for living," Evvie is constantly telling her. But Bella, who is fairly deaf, either doesn't hear or chooses not to. We all love her, but she doesn't believe it.

We walk and talk. With plenty to say, as if we don't see one another every single day and night. Not to mention phoning one another a dozen or more times a day.

Our half-hour workout is just about over when Sophie Meyerbeer, our roly-poly eighty-year-old, finally steps out of the elevator, bandbox-perfect in her pink, color-coordinated, extra-tight jogging ensemble. Pink sweats, pink sneakers with matching pom-poms, and a pink flowered sun hat. I might mention that this month's hairdo is also pink. Champagne Pink.

When she finally catches up to us, Ida mock-applauds her arrival. "So happy you could make it, Princess."

Clueless, Sophie takes her sarcasm as a compliment. Being incapable of spontaneity, Sophie has to get all dressed up, including makeup (fahputzed, Evvie calls it), before she'll walk out her door. Her third husband, Stanley, who made a fortune in notions and novelties, spoiled her rotten. He babied her, never let her lift a finger. Insisted she dress like a Kewpie doll for him. (Boy, did we speculate on their sex life!) He left her well-off and impossible.

"We're just about finished," says Ida, cooling down by walking slower.

"Oh," Sophie says, pouting girlishly. "Well, I couldn't help it. I didn't sleep a wink last night. I had such a terrible nightmare."

Bella stops, glad for any excuse not to move. "Ooh, tell us." She sits down on a bench, fanning herself.

Sophie shudders. "I dreamed I had a heart attack!"

Bella gasps, fluttering her hands nervously. "Oy . . . just like Selma."

"Change the subject," Ida snaps. She is never comfortable talking about death.

"No, it's my dream," Sophie insists.

"Just because Selma had a heart attack doesn't mean you will," Francie says gently as she continues her stretches.

Evvie adds judgmentally, "Besides, she was overweight and never exercised."

"Yeah," Ida adds with a satisfied smirk, "she and her pal Tessie were both thrown out of Weight Watchers."

"Maybe something caused that heart attack," I say. "For example, you know how Selma waxed those floors?"

"Yeah," Sophie chirps, "you coulda gone ice skating on them."

"Maybe she slipped and fell. Or maybe something frightened her . . ." I continue.

"She was so scared of spiders," Bella chimes in, happy to be able to contribute. "Remember that time she fainted when a teensie one crawled on her chair . . . ?"

Ida puts her hands on her hips defiantly and glares at me. "So? Dead is dead. What difference does it make?"

"The point is nobody bothered to investigate," I say. "Nobody cared to find out what really happened. Maybe if she hadn't been alone, maybe if Tessie hadn't had company that weekend, maybe she wouldn't have died."

This gives everyone pause.

Ida's had enough, and starts for the elevator. "Well, I'm going to get my bathing suit on."

"Good idea," I say, sorry I even brought it up. What's the point in depressing them?

Francie puts a reassuring arm around me. "Hey, Ida called it." Mimicking her: "Dead is dead." She giggles and I join in.

The group disbands, each to her own building, to get ready for part two of the morning routine--the pool.

Swimming

Just as I'm ready to walk out the door and head for the pool, I look at the phone, count to three, and--it rings. I pick it up and say, "Yes, Sophie."

"Are we going to the pool?"

"Yes, dear."

"Can I walk down with you?"

"Only if you're ready."

"Well . . . I'll just be a minute."

Knowing Sophie's minute, I tell her as I always do, "I'll start down. You can catch up to me."

I hang up, but stay by the phone. I know my customers. It rings again. My daily double. "Yes, Bella," I say as I pick up.

"Are we going to Publix today?" she asks.

"We usually go shopping on Friday."

"Is it Friday?"

"Yes, dear. Now go knock on Evvie's door and she'll walk you down to the pool. Don't forget your towel."

"All right."

The phones. Umbilical cords. Lifelines. To keep connected. To counteract loneliness. God bless Bell South.

I walk down the three flights instead of taking the elevator, another small attempt to keep fit, and join the parade heading for the pool. Everyone's in bathing suits, sun hats, and thongs (not the kind worn by the young girls at Miami Beach, but the ones which adorn wrinkled feet) and carrying towels and small beach bags. Swimming time is also early in the morning--before it gets too hot to sit around the pool.

Francie is in the parking area chatting with Denny Ryan as he rakes up fallen palm fronds. He is a big six-footer, in his early forties, but you'd hardly know it. Perhaps being slightly slow-witted has kept him childlike. His mother, Maureen, died suddenly about seven years ago. Maybe it's cruel to say it, but he's better off. Even though she was his sole support and caretaker, she was a harridan. But there is a real sweetness to Denny, and we try to add to his small allowance from Social Security by giving him odd jobs around our apartments. He can and does fix everything.

It was poor Denny, just doing his job, who came up to Selma's apartment to fix a plumbing leak. He was the one who found her dead body, and he still hasn't gotten over it.

Nice Start to Series
By drebbles
When Gladdy Gold's neighbor, Selma Beller, dies, Gladdy is saddened, but not concerned, at 75 and living in a retirement community, Gladdy is accustomed to death. But when her best friend Francie dies, Gladdy is heartbroken and begins to be suspicious since both Selma and Francie died around the time of their birthdays. Gladdy tries to convince the police that murder may have taken place, but they don't believe her so she starts investigating on her own. After two more deaths and a couple of autopsies that show the victims were poisoned, the police finally believe Gladdy. But will they be able to catch the murderer before Gladdy becomes the next victim?

"Getting Old is Murder" is a nice, humorous first entry in what looks to be an enjoyable cozy mystery series. Gladdy is a wonderful creation, very funny and still full of life (and romance) at 75. Her friends are all well written, with a nice touch of humor that makes them seem real but doesn't poke fun at the elderly. Each character stands out as an individual: the wisecracking Hy and his wife Lois; Gladdy's sister Evvie, a movie critic; Sophie with her slightly off-kilter cliches ("you're a broken record, play another"); Harriet who is young but lives there to take care of her elderly mother, Esther); Enya who never got over the loss of her family during the Holocaust; and Denny, the mentally slow handyman. Although the book is a cozy mystery and the elderly don't hesitate to solve the crime, it also shows the real problems of getting old, especially in the bittersweet case of Irving struggling to take care of his wife who has Alzheimer's. All of these characters are well written and come alive on the page.

The mystery itself is nicely done with some neat red herrings and when the murderer is finally revealed, there is a real motive behind the slayings. There are some minor flaws - Francie's death is well telegraphed (it's never a good sign when the heroine in a mystery wonders what she'd do if something happened to her best friend!). There's also some minor editing errors, such as when Gladdy remembers dropping a friend off at the dentist when she never did so. Not a major error, but enough to stop the flow of the story for a second or two. Rita Lakin takes you into the victim's minds as they are dying, which I found unsettling in a cozy mystery.

But these are indeed minor flaws and this is a very enjoyable, funny cozy mystery. It's worth buying just to read the scene in which Gladdy convinces a gang of teenagers to help her break into her car after she locks her keys in it. One of the funniest scenes I've ever read!

This is the funniest murder mystery ever! Clever too. You don't have to be a mystery fan to be a Gladdy Gold fan. Oy Vei!

terrific cozy
By A Customer
Based on thirty years of reading mysteries retired librarian Gladdy Gold believes a serial killer is murdering the residents of her Lauderdale Lakes retirement community. The cops assume that the increase in deaths is caused by the age of the residents, seventies and older for the most part.

However, she does nothing about this until her best friend Francie dies in a fittingly manner for her: death by chocolate. Unable to accept that the healthy Francie just keeled over due to age, Gladdy and her four remaining gladiators begin investigating though their joints hurt and they must be in bed by 9:00. As they get closer to the truth that a serial killer is cleverly murdering the residents, Gladdy concocts a plan to catch this murdering putz (universal usage) although the gladiators keep thinking oy! vey!

GETTING OLD FOR MURDER is a terrific cozy filled with elderly Yiddish chick lit humor. The story line is mostly told by Gladdy, but contains a host of other individuals with plenty of kvetches and of course Gladdy's GAS (geriatric amateur sleuths) gang. Fans of South Florida who-done-its starring septuagenarian and octogenarian retirees trying to keep their medicines straight will enjoy Rita Lakin's amusing tale.

mostly useless and far from complete
By Doke Scott
This book's data on fat and carbohydrates is insufficent for modern diets. It does has a lot of other useful data, some useless data, and is missing a lot of expected products.

The biggest problem is the way fat is listed. Saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat are all lumped into a single number for total fat. This makes the book inadequate for Atkins or South Beach dieters. You can't tell good fats from bad.

The listings show total carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, but they don't show net carbs, or sugar alcohols. This is important for dieters and diabetics since many of our specialty foods are sweetened with these substitutes. Of course, the book generally omits diet foods, so this may not matter.

There is no information about vitamins or minerals.

It does contain a lot of useful information about basic ingredients that are often sold without nutritional labels (for example, fresh meat and vegetables). There's also a lot of information about foods served at chain restaurants, which is useful for deciding to where to go.

The bulk of the data seems to have been copied from prepared food product labels. This isn't very useful, since I can usually just look at the package, though it is sometimes convenient. It's even less useful for the obsolete products.

A lot of obvious expected products are missing. I can't find any mention of diet soft drinks, diet meal bars, diet shakes, low-carb foods, or liquor. Beer and wine are mentioned, but in poor detail. Beer has only two entries: "regular" and "light". If they can devote 4 pages to different brands of fully-sugared soft drinks, they could at least tell us the differences between a stout and an india pale ale. Wine is a little better. They list desert, red, rose, and white. However, I find it difficult to believe a sweet white zinfandel has the same numbers as a dry chardonnay.

This book wasn't a complete waste of money, but I still want something better.

Comprehensive listing
By Robina R. Storm
This is a comprehensive listing of both natural foods i.e. flour, apple, string beans and manufactured foods i.e. canned chili, frozen dinners which provides not only calories but carbohydrates, fat, protein, cholesterol, sodium and fiber, You can find it all in this book and keep track of exactly what you are eating. It is an invaluable resource.

The tragedy of errors between its equally willful hero and heroine hinder the plot of this second installment (after The Dangerous Gentleman) in London's The Rogues of Regent Street series. Unbeknownst to both Julian and Claudia is the depth of the other's affection. Consequently, when Julian's friend Phillip, a fellow dashing, supercilious, lady-killing "Rogue," becomes infatuated with Claudia, she returns Phillip's affection, until he is killed in a senseless, drunken and suicidal duel, for which Julian blames himself and for which Claudia, in turn, blames Julian and the Rogues' fast lifestyle. Nevertheless, life goes on, and the frequent bantering and flirting between Claudia and Julian eventually leads to an intimate encounter on a garden bench. But the couple are discovered by a member of the social establishment and forced into marriage to save Claudia's reputation. Believing that Julian is heartless and cruel and that their marriage is a loveless one, Claudia goes against Julian's wishes by helping his younger sister, Sophie, secretly meet with the man of her dreamsAan abusive blackguard who is only after the family fortune. Unfortunately, London loses the romance amid all the turmoil of her plot. But this won't be enough to turn off historical romance fans, for London has always satisfied her readers by providing plenty of lavish 19th-century settings and costumes. (Oct.)

Absolutely Wonderful!!
By A Customer
I just finished reading this book and I couldn't put it down! I really didn't think that The Devil's Love or Wicked Angel could be bested, but I believe they have. I absolutely loved The Devil's Love, but The Ruthless Charmer was even better. You will fall in love with Julian Dane. His love for Claudia brought tears to my eyes and I loved the storyline involving him and Sophie, his sister, as well. This books beats anything I have read! I cannot imagine how Julia London will top this, but I thought that when I read The Devil's Love and along came the Ruthless Charmer. I can't wait to read Arthur's story. Please Hurry Julia!

The Final Detail (Myron Bolitar, Book 6), by Harlan Coben

In this sixth novel in the award-winning Myron Bolitar series, Harlan Coben delivers a riveting powerhouse thriller—a twisting mystery of betrayal, family secrets, and murder.

Myron Bolitar’s colleague at MB SportsReps, Esperanza, has been arrested for the murder of a client, a fallen baseball star attempting a comeback. Myron is determined to prove Esperanza’s innocence—even if she won’t speak to him on the advice of her lawyer, who warns Myron to keep away from both the case and his client. But Myron is already too close, too involved, and has too much at stake. And the closer Myron gets to the truth, the more the evidence points to the only viable suspect besides Esperanza: Myron himself.

Amazon.com Review
Myron Bolitar is a fascinating character--a guy in his 30s who just moved into his own New York apartment, and who still looks forward to dinner with his parents in New Jersey. A former pro-basketball star and Harvard Law School grad, he now runs his own sports agency, and also dabbles in the private investigation business. He is helped (and sometimes hindered) by his rich, blond, preppy friend Windsor Horne Lockwood III. Win has some awesome lethal powers hidden under his Brooks Brothers suits!

In The Final Detail Win and Myron are looking into the murder of a client--a troubled New York Yankees baseball player called Clu Haid. Clu was apparently shot to death by Esperanza Diaz, who just happens to be Myron's best friend and partner in the sport's agency. Esperanza is hiding something, but Myron isn't sure if it has to do with her job, or with her private life. His search for the truth takes him back to a shabby incident from his own past, and to times he would rather forget. Author Harlan Coben casually drops in dozens of poignant moments of humanity that keep us--and Myron--firmly grounded in reality.

Other books in this excellent series include Backspin, Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, and One False Move. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly
You know things are getting tough for Myron Bolitar when the crime-solving sports agent finds that his favorite tippleAthe chocolate drink Yoo-HooAhas lost its kick. At a particularly harrowing point in his latest Bolitar book (after One False Move), Coben reveals that his hero actually "craved a venti-size skim iced latte with a splash of vanilla." Despite being a former pro basketball star and Harvard Law School grad, Myron remains a touching everyman, a guy who still looks forward to dinner with his parents and can even cry in the bathroom after his father admits to some recent chest pains. In this case, Myron probes the murder of one of his clients, a troubled baseball player named Clu Haid, who was apparently shot by Myron's sports-agency partner, Esperanza Diaz. Esperanza is hiding something, but Myron isn't sure if it has to do with business or with her bisexuality. His search for the truth takes him to a bar called Take a Guess ("It's About Ambiguity, Not Androgyny"), where he falls for a Julie Newmar/Catwoman look-alike who may or may not be female, and to the front offices at Yankee Stadium. Ultimately, the trail leads him to revisit a 12-year-old mystery about a missing girl as well as a shabby incident in his own past. Along the way, Coben works in poignant scenes, such as an interview with a mother who wallpapers her house with family photographs. Myron relies less on the lethal powers of his rich, blond, preppy friend Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III) than in previous adventures. The change makes for the strongest entry yet in a series that deftly balances realism with excitement, while refusing to fall back on genre clich?s. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Booklist
What will appeal most to readers of this sixth installment in the Myron Bolitar series is its complex protagonist. Wisecracking sports agent Myron is a hero who is hard to figure out but easy to love. Hiding behind a joking exterior, he makes light of serious situations in a touching effort to hide from his own demons. While Myron is trying to escape from his troubles in the Caribbean, his best friend and partner, Esperanza, is charged with murdering one of their clients, a problem-filled Yankee pitcher. Aided by his unlikely friend Win, a rich, handsome preppie with a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous, and a tough former wrestler named Big Cyndi, Myron tries to clear Esperanza--against her wishes. Standing out in a standout story are loyal Myron's loving relationships with his parents and friends. A winner on all counts. Jenny McLarin

A Modern Hammett
By Louis Barbarelli
The Final Detail is not just the first Myron Bolitar mystery I've read, but also the first Coben book. I haven't been this absorbed in a mystery since reading The Maltese Falcon as a kid. Coben has created unforgettable, quirky characters who engage us even more than the story does.
Some other reviewers have suggested that The Final Detail was a bit stale. But, since it was my introduction to the series, it seemed fresh and new to me. The novel did stand pretty well on its own, but there were a few out-of-the-blue references to characters like Brenda Slaughter, who appeared in earlier stories, that were not put into context. On the other hand, these tantalizing unexplained references increased my desire to read the rest of the series. This time, I'll do it in sequence of publication.
There are some electrifying characters in this series, particularly Win, the semi-psychotic playboy/money manager/intellectual. And Big Cyndi is both a hilarious and edgy creation.
I would have given the book 5 stars had it not been for a couple of points. I thought the character of Thrill (Nancy) was completely unecessary, unless she's simply being introduced as a central character for a future installment. I felt that there too many women throwing themselves at Bolitar and that Bolitar's affection toward his parents got mawkish at times. I also felt that Esperanza is a convenient conglomeration of political correctness (Lesbian, Latina, professional woman, brainy beauty, assertive, etc. etc.) rather than a real flesh-and-blood character, at least in this installment.
Overall, I feel this was a terrific mystery and that Coben is right up there with the greats of the genre.

Best Mystery Writer Around...Case Closed
By Chad Spivak
Harlan Coben is the most gifted mystery writer to enter the literary world in quite some time. In this sixth book of the Myron Bolitar series, Coben is, again, nothing less than sensational.
Bolitar, owner of MB SportsReps, has taken a vacation in the Carribbean, without telling anyone. While relaxing on the tropical beach for three weeks, his company goes to pieces, and his partner, Esperanza, is arrested for the murder of Myron's first ever client, major league relief pitcher, Clu Haid.
Myron is rushed back into the limelight, as a potential suspect as well as an accessory. He is forced to scramble to keep his agency afloat, clear his best friend's name, and deal with his competition, which is run by the mafia. To make matters worse, Esperanza wants him to back off, something that Myron just can't do.
All of the loveable characters are back, and fans of Big Cindi will really get to know her a lot better in this novel. A few new interesting characters are introduced as Myron travels through New York's sexual underground for answers.
There are so many wicked plot twists, the book becomes a wild page-turner instantly. Coben's gifted writing talents shine through remarkably, and the character dialogue is perfectly snappy. The storyline is impressively complete and well-defined. This is simply another super effort by Coben, and one entertaining read.

Not as action packed as previous Myron novels
By James N Simpson
This is not the usual can't put down, forget what's on TV, call in sick so you can finish it Myron Bolitar adventure. Most Myron adventures are full of action and although there is a small amount in this novel this book is a more of a get to know a bit more about the lives and past of supporting characters which haven't been explored in great detail in previous novels such as Myron's dad, Esperanza, Big Cyndi and even Myron. Although Win is in this novel, he is really mostly a conversationalist in this one seeing very little action at all. Myron even decides Yoo-Hoo is no longer his favourite drink in this book. It is almost as if fans have demanded another Myron Sequel and Coben has run out of ideas so has just decided to release more information on the other characters with a basic plot to tie it together. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the Bolitar series and have immensely enjoyed them all but I don't think this one is up there in quality, suspense or the other aspects that made those great.
Whilst during the third quarter of the book you do experience the don't want to stop, can't put the book down experience, that does unfortunately die out and it certainly never was there before that part of the book. I hate to say it but in some parts there is so much uninteresting talking amongst characters that you are willing them to hurry up and get on to the next scene. I think Coben should concentrate on the independent masterpieces he is writing for the moment until he can come up with better adventures for Myron. It is a great series and like Patterson's Alex Cross series you don't want to read novels forced out to appease impatient fans and publishers which lessen the overall quality of the collection.
Anyway the basic plot for this novel is Myron has taken off for a lengthy period of time to a deserted island without telling clients or friends with anchor woman Terese Collins. Meanwhile one of his clients Clu Haid, is found with a bullet hole in head and his MB SportsReps partner and best friend, Esperanza is in custody awaiting trial for his murder. She also no longer wants to have anything to do with Myron.
This book I would only recommend to fans of the series. The Myron Bolitar books are sensational and you have to check out the seires. Definitely do not start either your Coben or Myron Bolitar experience with this novel. With the Bolitar books I would highly recommend starting at the first book Deal Breaker, as parts of the plots of earlier books are given away in novels which follow earlier ones in the series. Coben's indenpendant books are masterpieces, check them out as well.

Robin soon enough learns what Brother Luke means. And when the great castle of Lindsay is in danger, it is Robin, who cannot mount a horse and ride to battle, who saves the townspeople and discovers there is more than one way to serve his king..

I'm so happy that we picked this edition for a gift, it looks better than the picture provided, it doesn't have that Laurel Leaf Newberry line down at the bottom. The story is, of course, fantastic as well as the illustrations! This was a great buy at a great price!

Excellent, benign look into Middle Ages -- Not a military/adventure novel!
By Waverley36
Delightful, low-key, descriptively lean account of England circa the 1330s through the eyes of a handicapped boy. Not the action adventure some readers seem to be expecting, but a non-revisionist slice of life, Middle Ages style. Younger readers will need to be good readers, and patient ones, to reap these rewards. (In fact, that's what this book is about!)

De Angeli's short Newbery winner follows Robin, ten year old son of a nobleman fighting in Edward III's "Scottish wars" and one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. Robin's London caregivers are wiped out by the plague, so the care of his delicate health (he has recently been stricken lame) falls to a benevolent monk named Brother Luke. The good brother quietly applies himself to strengthening Robin in both body and mind, emphasizing that perseverance and patience will always result in finding "a door in the wall," a way beyond present obstacles. Robin's lessons include wood carving, reading, writing, singing and playing music, swimming, and walking with crutches.

There is no insistent plot to jerk the story forward and no loud, overstated characters to interfere with Robin's quiet development. Robin shares some mild adventures on the road in the company of Luke and a minstrel named John Go-in-the-wynd before all his newfound resourcefulness and skill are called upon in defense of a local castle.

Nice, pleasant, quick. Unapologetic about the era's Christian culture and the benevolence of its priests, so probably not very popular among trendy Newbery spokespeople these days. But De Angeli's message of gentle, humble perseverance is actually inspiring.

An assignment to research his family history leads a boy to discover an intriguing secretAbut to solve the mystery he may risk hurting those he loves. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-A thrilling search through a family's dark past. What starts out as a simple family-history project turns into an obsessive hunt for the truth behind an old family feud. Andy Bonner is determined to get to the bottom of a mystery involving an ancestor who had supposedly stolen his parents' money and been disowned. The more he learns from his Great Aunt Winnie and her nemesis, his best friend's great-grandmother, the more he needs to know. His investigation takes him from the World Wide Web to the town cemetery, to family sources who refuse to talk. As usual, Nixon's main character is an ordinary kid with extraordinary resourcefulness. When Andy learns the truth, he must decide whether to keep the secret to himself, or destroy the reputation of the town's founding father and hurt his best friend. Nixon has once again delivered a riveting tale of suspense set against a background of fascinating historical context, brought up to date through e-mail and the Internet.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-6. Andy finds his Texas history assignment a nuisance, but he dutifully interviews his great-aunt, his grandparents, and his friend J.J.'s great-grandmother. Intrigued by hints of disgrace and treachery a few generations back, Andy decides to restore the reputation of Coley Joe, whose name was struck out of the family Bible. The boy perseveres in spite of advice, admonitions, and anonymous threats. Not all the characters are well rounded, yet it's refreshing to find elderly characters who have faults, spunk, and (in one case) facility in cyberspace. For his detective work, Andy uses the Internet, a novel but relatively inactive plot device for a mystery story. A few elements of the supernatural are introduced, but most children will read the story for the fun of guessing who is warning Andy off the case. Carolyn Phelan

This Book Is Mysterious, Scary, And Great
By Desiree Way
In this book Shadow Man you will experience some sad, mysterious, and shocking things. Initially, the main character in the story, twelve-year-old Andy Thomas isn't thrilled with his teacher's assignment to explore family history. But when asking questions about his ancestors, he is surprised to discover a relative named Coley Joe Bonner. No one wants to discuss what went on in the family's past. Andy searches everywhere to gather information about his family's past, from the Internet to the local cemetery. The family is telling Andy to stop his investigation. "Will Andy's search hurt those he love or make them realize that it's never too late to seek justice?" Twelve-year-old Andy Thomas, who was assigned to a project where he had to find out a lot of things about his family history. He goes through old boxes, family trees, and old photo albums to find out everything he can. Andy looks through all of these old boxes and finds that there is a guy on a photo that's not shown. When Andy asks around about who he is they say his name is Coley Joe, but refuses to tell anything else about him. He goes to J.J.'s house (his best friend) to go see Miz Minna, for some information. When he asks her what he does, she says that he stole the family money and was taken out of the family bible. Knowing Andy he goes to the Internet, then the library, then to the cemetery. Doing all of that research, it gets him on to a investigation. He uses his dad's screen name, Hunter, to ask people in the chat rooms about Coley Joe. He finds out some things about Coley Joe, but that doesn't help his search. Someone in the chat room sends Andy some letters that Coley Joe sent to his girlfriend Felicity. He printed them out, set them down, and headed toward the cemetery. When he got there, a man named Elton was there and he was kind of scary. He knew some things about Coley Joe, but he mostly kept telling Andy to find out what the Bonners want to tell him. Andy is really confused about what is going on. But to find out what the family's secret is you'll have to read the book! But as a hint, the mystery to be solved is that the main character, Andy Thomas, believes that his relative Cole Joseph Bonner did not steal his family's money. The problem is that he is the only one in his family that believes this. His best friend J.J. Gasper the 7th (J.J. is James Jonathan Gasper) is trying to prove that Andy is right but the problem is J.J.'s great grandmother, Miz Minna, doesn't like the fact that Andy is digging up old family secrets that may change their town's history. So while he's digging up things, Miz Minna is giving Andy warning signs to stop researching about Coley Joe or something bad was going to happen to him. Imagine that you were Andy and your family thinks a relative in your family stole family money, what would you do? I know, you would try to figure out the real story just as Andy did. This book is filled with suspense. Andy's search filled me with many questions. The author of this book wrote this book very well and she has been called "the grande dame of young adult mysteries". She has served as vice president of the Southwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and is the only four-time winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Best Juvenile Mystery Award. Joan, the author, has won awards for many of her books. So if she has won many awards and was vice president of the Southwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America then there is no wonder why the book is so good. In reading this book I thought that it would be excellent for kids' ages 8-15 years of age. After you read this review/article, I recommend you go and get this book.

Searching for a good Book? Try Search for the Shadowman.

This mysterious story will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see if what is around the next corner is what ends the story or makes even it more mysterious. If you read this tense mystery you will not be able to put it down. It doesn't just keep telling you what's going to happen with clues all over the story. The truth doesn't appear until the end when the story has been narrowed down to a straight line and all that needs to be done is find the proof at the end. The trouble for the main character is, the proof is at the end but it is not apparent. The mystery to be solved is that the main character, Andy Thomas, believes that his relative Cole Joseph Bonner did not steal his family's money. The problem is that he is the only one in his family that believes this. His best friend J.J. Gasper the 7th (J.J. is James Jonathan) is trying to prove Andy right but the problem is J.J.'s great grandmother, Miz Minna, doesn't like the fact that Andy is digging up old family secrets that may change their town's history. the reason that it may change the town history is because J.J. the 1st is a huge hero, and she doesn't want to loose her family honor. I would recommend this book to just about anyone who can read. I think that people would like this book because its a funny, tense, and in some ways complicated book that tells about Andy's determination to prove Coley Joe Bonner innocent.

Search for the Shadowman,is a faboulous book!
By A Customer
In Search for te Shadowman by Joan Lowery Nixon the main character Andy Thompson gets an assignment from his history teacher and begins a search for a fellow in his family tree known as Coley Joe. A mystery surrounds Coley Joe's being crossed off the family tree by a betrayal of trust. Only trouble is Andy doesn't know think Coley Joe is guilty and sets out to prove his innocence, with some tough research.
I liked this story 's use of the computer,E-mail,library research and detective footwork to help Andy solve the mystery about Coley Joe. More than the research I enjoyed learing about Andy as a person by the way he handled his assignment. Andy showed his and faithfulness to his research, his family and his friend by achieving his goal of clearing Coley Joe's name, making his family proud of their ancestor and still honoring his friendship with J.J.
Even when Andy's research could have given him fame and fortune, it would have also hurt his bestfriend and his family. Andy chose the only honorable way to end the long lost search for the shadowman.

Not for children who still believe in Santa Claus - zero stars!
By Avid Reader and Parent
This book is HORRIBLE. It very plainly states that "there isn't any real santa claus. Your mom gives you the things on your list". The author also has kids making fun of another child who still believes in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. The children in the book are seven, the same age as my daughter. I just can't believe that a book my first grader can read would flat out say there is no Santa Claus. Stay away from this book if you want your child to still believe in any childhood magic!

This book is not for Children who believe in Santa Claus
By Tamera Robey
This book was written on a third grade reading level. I am a professional educator from Texas and I read it with my twin 7 year olds two weeks before Christmas(The characters in this book are also 7 year olds). Early in the book a child was being teased about believing in Santa Claus. I was surprised, but felt sure that toward the end of the book Ms. Delton would some how tie in that there really was a Santa Claus, so she wouldn't ruin a timeless tradition of many people. Imagine my surprise when she did the exact opposite! One child tells the other- Santa Claus isn't real he is really your mom and dad and the boy responds by saying, I know, but it is more fun to pretend you beleive. I think it was irresponsible of Ms. Delton to write a Christmas story on a Third grade reading level (this is also the grade that I teach) and to tell millions of children everywhere that Santa Claus isn't real. It is my job as a parent to make the decision as to whether my children participate in the believe of Santa Claus. I expected my chlidren would find out that Santa was not real, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would find out from a library book!...
The book is a good book, but the content is not apporpiate for the age level in which it is written. This is why I rated it so low!

If this is how you'd like your child to find out there is no such thing as Santa Claus, if you'd like to teach your child that it is ok to laugh at other kids for what they believe in, if referring to other kids as "dumb" or "stupid" is how you'd like them to treat people, then this book is for you. For me, I was appalled at the escalating references to there not being a Santa Claus. I was hoping as the book progressed that tone would change but it didn't. After reading a couple of chapters with my daughter I fast forworded to the end for the shocking conclusion. Needless to say, the book disappeared from her bookshelf without being finished. Shame on Judy Delton and the publisher. Now I have an eight year old daughter questioning Christmas and Santa Clause. A children's Christmas book should not be the way your child finds out there is no Santa Claus. This book should have been titled a "Pee Wee Christmas Dream Killer." At least we'd have some forwarning.
