Amazon.com Review
As readers who have enjoyed his appearances in original paperbacks already know, Harlan Coben's former professional basketball star Myron Bolitar is not your everyday testosterone-enriched jock. Myron is a mild-mannered guy who drinks chocolate soda and until very recently lived at home with his parents in suburban New Jersey. In his hardcover debut, we find Myron sharing a New York apartment with his longtime lady friend, writer Jessica Culver, and still running MB SportsReps, where he ostensibly manages the careers of other athletes, but really spends most of his time playing private eye. The arrival in Myron's life of rising pro basketball star Brenda Slaughter seriously tests his commitment to Jessica, who is in Hollywood working on a movie. It seems that Brenda's father Horace--Myron's old coach--has disappeared, and Brenda is receiving death threats that might involve a gangster family's plans for a new female professional basketball league. Or the threats might have something to do with Brenda's mother's connection to a wealthy New Jersey political family. Myron and his banker friend Win, a preppy with a penchant for violence, are more than enough to double-team the bad guys. Previous Myron Bolitar games in paperback include Backspin, Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, and Fade Away.

From Library Journal
Series sports agent Myron Bolitar handles everything with panache: his relationships, his clients, and this search for two missing people. When a sports store mogul asks him to "watch over" basketball star Brenda Slaughter, Myron winds up looking for her father, who disappeared a week ago, and her mother, who deserted the family some 20 years earlier. Myron not only discovers mob interest in female basketball but also a connected suspicious death in a high-profile political family. Standard plotting, then, but authentic conversation, colorful characters, and exciting New York and New Jersey surrounds more than compensate. Strongly recommended.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Brenda Slaughter may be the greatest female basketball player ever, and sports agent Myron Bolitar takes Brenda under his wing. Bolitar's ability to hone his basketball skills as a young man was made possible by Brenda's father, Horace, who acted as the white Bolitar's guardian angel on the very hostile inner-city playgrounds. Bolitar and Brenda forge a business relationship, and the first order of business is finding Horace. The trail Horace left is troubling because it contains hints of a 20-year-old scandal that left the wife of current gubernatorial candidate Arthur Bradford dead. The fifth Bolitar mystery--and the first in hardcover--continues the series' realistic portrayal of the contemporary sports world while dishing up a bit of murder and mayhem. Bolitar is a solid protagonist who is plenty tough but also smart enough to accept his shortcomings. If you haven't been including the Bolitar paperbacks in your mystery collection, this is a good place to start. Wes Lukowsky

Myron kinda loses his way in this one; read to find out
By J. Grattan
This is the fifth book in the Myron Bolitar series. While having read only three of the other six to this point, it is not possible to say with certainty that this one is the best of all seven. But "One False Move" has more in-depth personal interactions than the others that I have read, drawing the reader a little closer to Myron than is sometimes the case. For those unfamiliar with Bolitar, he runs MB SportsRep. But his circuitous journey to this point, after his budding basketball career was abruptly ended due to a serious on-court injury, gives Myron a dimension far beyond the typical sports agent.
The book is, as usual with Coben, fast-paced with Myron and Win, his quirky, lethal, and blue-blood partner, encountering all manner of sleaze-balls and people with something to hide. Brenda Slaughter, the girl that the new WPBA basketball league is featuring, should be on top of the world. But her father has gone missing after she filed assault charges against him, not to mention the fact that her long-lost mother of twenty years has been on her mind all of that time. Enter Myron; the league needs its investment protected. But the assignment gets more complicated and riskier by the day.
Some reviewers find the Coben books humorous. And they are. But the dialogue is more edgy than funny. Of course, the new office worker Cyndi, the spikey ex-pro female wrestler, is captivating and hilarious.
There are some good twists in this book. I missed the one at the end - well actually I missed all of them. See if you can get it (them). Meanwhile I'm starting another Myron Bolitar book.

A fantastic novel, and I know nothing about US sports!!
By A Customer
I had not read a Harlan Coben novel before, and when I was told it included a lot of American Basketball references, I was sceptical. I was, however, pleasantly surprised. This novel appeals to a wide audience, not just sports fans, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It showed great wit, especially in the repartees between Myron and his partner Win, and I found myself laughing out loud, (which was highly embarassing). The storyline was fast moving and thrilling, and the ending was satisfying and well done. I found myself really connecting with the main characters and feeling for them. I definitly plan to read more of Coben's books, especially the Bolitar series. I definitly recommend it, particularly if you like a bit of humour in your thrillers.

POWERFUL MOVE!
By Carol
Started reading Mr Coben's books from the first one. This one was so intense, the ending took my breath away.

What a powerful read! A page turner from the very beginning. Myron agrees to look after an upcoming woman basketball player. Of course, he gets in depths beyond his swimming capacity but still will not give in or give up. Thank heaven, he has Win who sometimes is his voice of reason. I too would like to see more intense punishment for the bad guys. Myron holds Win on a tight leash, yet depends on Win's saving his butt at the cruicial moment. Again, the characters are vivid. Myron was a pushover for his client, Brenda the gorgeous Amazon. Myron and Esperanza reach a crossroad. Win is so wonderful; the man is a psycho dream!!! Thank heaven, he sees Myron as a true friend. He is Myron's guardian angel!

Mr. Coben's books are wonderful reads. This one was not as witty and funny but the sarcasm was still there. The ending is breathtaking! On to the next.

I used to be your average, everyday girl but all that changed one night in Dublin when I saw my first Fae, and got dragged into a world of deadly immortals and ancient secrets. . . .

In her fight to stay alive, MacKayla must find the Sinsar Dubh—a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over the worlds of both the Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she can’t trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and powerful men: V’lane, the immortal Fae Prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is dangerous.

For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

A Q&A with Karen Marie Moning

What inspired you to launch a new series? And what is the single greatest new twist in the Fever series that fans can expect to enjoy?
Inspiration is a kind word. I didn’t have a choice. It’s the story idea that came and wouldn’t go away. I think the single greatest new twist in the Fever series is that Mac is a continuing heroine, on a critical mission, who gets caught in a dangerous love-lust triangle with two of the most seductive men I’ve written to date.

If you were casting the Fever series for television, who would be the ideal actress to play Mac. Why?
That’s a tough one. I don’t watch much television and what I do see is after the DVD’s have been released, so I’m woefully out of date. If backed to a wall I'd say Mac is one part George from Dead Like Me, one part Sara Pezzini from Witchblade and one part sweet southern belle who's being forced to discover there's steel under all that magnolia, after all.

You write vividly sexy scenes. You write thrilling suspense plots. Do you find any one part of crafting these novels more challenging than another?
I find them equally challenging. The suspense plots have to be tightly constructed and seamlessly interwoven through the five books of the Fever series, which makes for a lot to keep up with, what to reveal, what not to reveal, how and when. The sexy scenes are very intimate and I don’t shy away from detail, which demands both total immersion and separation of self to write. There are some "sexy" scenes in this series that are far more disturbing than seductive and those are among the most difficult to write. I hope if I'm squirming, wanting to rescue Mac, so is my reader.

Were you surprised at any point in the writing of Bloodfever—meaning did anything come up in the creative process that was not what you anticipated when you began Darkfever, the first novel in the series?
In Faefever, the third book of the series, Mac says: "Sometimes my dreams feel so real it's hard to believe they're just the subconscious's stroll across a whimsical map that has no true north. Sometimes it seems like Dreaming must be a land that really exists out there somewhere, at a concrete latitude and longitude, with its own rules, laws, treacherous terrains and dangerous inhabitants." (She later finds out The Dreaming does, indeed, exist.) I feel the same about the Fever world. It’s so complete to me, so vividly and exactingly detailed that I think it must really exist out there somewhere. Since the story came to me in toto, there have been very few, minor surprises.

If you could stand in a room with your heroes—the men from any of your novels—not just the Fever novels—who would you most like to interview yourself? Why? What of the women?
Men: The Unseelie King. He’s rumored to be a million years old. I want to know if he’s sorry.
Women: Queen Aoibheal. I want to know if she’s really forgotten, or if she’s just pretending.

Describe your writing routine when composing the Fever novels.
The location varies but the schedule is the same. I write best in the morning when my subconscious is still simmering with images and metaphors from dreaming. I wrote Darkfeverin Georgia, and Bloodfever in Key West; all that sunshine was a nice counterpoint to the darkness of the story. I start early in the morning, usually around 4:30 or 5:00 and write until 11, break for a two-hour lunch and go back to it around 1. I use the afternoons to edit and work on other aspects of my business. Before I go to bed I block out the scene(s) I plan to write the next day so my subconscious can mull them over while I sleep.

When you aren’t writing your novels, what are you doing for fun? And what kinds of books or which authors are your favorites?
Lately a lot of lying in the sun—I’m still in Key West and I’m afraid Mac has rubbed off on me, or maybe it’s all the Jimmy Buffet they keep playing down here. Usually, however, I’m not so sedentary. I love to work out, hike, bike, rollerblade, shop with my sisters, and travel with my husband and our cat, Moonshadow. I don’t get nearly enough time to read. The most recent books I finished were the latest by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Charlaine Harris, and an early Dan Simmons.

And can you share a little sneak peek at what’s coming after Bloodfever?
The darkest hour is before dawn. It isn’t dawn yet.

From Publishers Weekly
Moning's latest feverish Fae dispatch (after Darkfever) finds that in Dublin the walls are coming down between Man and Faery. That means that the Buffy-like services of MacKayla Lane—the 22-year-old Georgia-born sidhe-seer (or one who can see the Fae) and slayer—are required. Mac is determined to kick the nasties back to faeryland and to avenge her sister Alina's murder by the Fae's dark Lord Master. She's also seeking the sinister Sinsar Dubh, a book of black magic. Jericho Barrons, Mac's enigmatic protector, is a purveyor of books and antiquities (and of course, is a major hunk). As Mac takes direction from Jericho, she must resist the sexy dangers of V'lane, a death-by-sex Fae, and learn about her true family of Irish sidhe-seers. Moning's delectable Mac is breathlessly appealing, and the wild perils she must endure are peppered with endless conundrums. The results are addictively dark, erotic and even shocking.

Outstanding follow-up to Darkfever
By D. Minchow
I read Darkfever and in my previous review I admitted it was a near miss. I almost put it down - the kiss of death for me. Luckily I stuck with it and I was not disappointed. But with the new installment of the fever series, Bloodfever, I discovered that the occasional slow pace in Darkfever was absent in Bloodfever. Bloodfever moved fast with action everywhere: more twists were introduced, more characters with complex hidden agendas appeared, old characters returned with scores to settle. Nonoe of the issues raised in Darkfever were resolved - should they have been? I don't think so. This is a series and there needs to be something in the rest of the installments. I disagree with the reviewers that claimed this story didn't advance. True, we still don't know who or what Jerricho is but then we were given clues to chew on and contemplate. Mac becomes stronger and more complex. Her pink clothers are disappearing, her nails are a mess, and she still doesn't know who to trust but she does learn who she can rely on - and she starts doing shots. I'm starting to think she's better than Buffy.

But there are no easy answers in this story. Darkfever was billed as a romance but Bloodfever is anything but (IMHO) with no knights in shining armor rushing to Mac's rescue without first proposing a bargain. Mac is pushed into doing things nobody could have guessed at in order to save herself. The evolution of the relationship between Mac and JB is raucous and funny. The sexual tension between the two does grow and come (almost) to a head. But mostly what we see is Mac growing and changing to fit this new role, this new personna. It was an amazing, exciting, wonderful read. If you are looking for sexually charged romances typical of Karen's previous work then maybe you should pass (and that would be too bad for you) but if you want to witness the growth of a writer into new territory and enjoy a great read then I strongly recommend Bloodfever.

Outstanding!! Excellent character development!
By J. Sommerville
So I just finished the book last night - finished it in about 8 hours. In my review of Darkfever, I stated that Mac had a lot of growing up to do; she was much to `spoiled valley-girl like for me. I couldn't identify with her, I really didn't like her or feel much empathy for what was happening to her. However, I told myself to wait and see how/if Mac changes in this book, and let that determine if I will continue reading this series. Well, KMM has pulled it off, and Mac's character has definitely grown, and developed to the point that I really truly like her now. She has become more serious and spunky. She's thinking for herself, and not letting anyone walk all over her. She's matured from the 22 y/o manicure-obsessed brat she came across as in DF.

In this stage of the story, KMM has added more characters, thrown in some interesting twists, and developed just a bit more of the relationship with Mac, Barrons and V'lane, and there could be a third love interest that KMM introduces. Mac can't trust anyone because there are no clear motives and everyone's in the game for their own reasons. But Mac's motives don't appear to be entirely pure either. I wonder what Mac really plans on doing with the Sinsar Dubh, if she manages to get her hands on it?

KMM has tied up very few loose ends, and has created even more. She hasn't resolved any of the issues brought up in DF, and created more. This is exactly what I look for in a series - if all the questions are answered too early, why bother to continue reading? Anyone expecting resolutions will be disappointed. For those looking for a bit of the romance between Mac and Barrons, there are two scenes that show more of the sexual tension - one of which is positively explosive. We get a brief shot of a softer side of Barrons than we previously had, making me think that Barrons isn't so tough and unemotional afterall. Anyone expecting gratuitous sex is going to be disappointed. From the sparks flying, I don't see how KMM can keep it from happening in the next book though.

There is more than enough fodder in this book to keep my fever going for the next year while waiting for the next installment. I was hoping for at least an excerpt, but it wasn't forthcoming.

SPOILER: It appears that V'lane sifts Mac away before she can meet the druids. I wonder why he chose that exact moment? Very intriguing. We also now know what Barrons is not, but gives a few ideas as what he could be.

Just keeps getting better!
By Looloo
Whilst I will always love Karen Marie Monings highlander books (boy do I love em) this new series shows her growth as a writer. She has gone from writing a complete story in one book and stretched herself into the realms of the epic saga. Darkfever felt like a great prologue and opening chapters and Bloodfever has continued into the first section of the story. Mac's development and ... I want to say seduction .. underpinned this segment in what is obviously going to be a fabulous series. I did not see some of the developments coming which is such a treat these days and I felt I was not reading fast enough to keep up with the story. Well done Karen, I adore seeing your new darker side.

From Publishers Weekly
Battles's perfunctory fourth thriller (after Shadow of Betrayal) falls short of the standard set by the first two entries in his series featuring operative Jonathan Quinn, who specializes in disposing of dead bodies and cleaning crime scenes so as to leave no evidence behind. Given his high personal standards and a conscience, Quinn works only for those he considers good guys, usually the darker departments of the U.S. government. When David Wills, a client based in London, gives Quinn and his team a series of jobs that requires them to clean up after assassinations, Quinn finds himself dealing with not only the requisite bodies but also another team of unknown origin that's bent on stopping the assassinations. As the jobs continue, Quinn begins to doubt Wills's motives. Hopefully, next time out Quinn will have a more exciting plot to tidy up after. (Mar.)

Even Jove Nods
By Richard B. Schwartz
"Even Jove nods from time to time," one of my colleagues used to say. Publishers Weekly has fallen dead asleep this time. The Silenced is many things, but perfunctory is not one of them.

Moreover, there is no obvious `falling off' from the first three novels in the Quinn-the-cleaner series. The Silenced is different from the previous three in that we now get some serious backstory on Battles' protagonist. MINI-SPOILER ALERT: he's from Minnesota. He has a sister; he had a brother; he's just lost his father; his name is actually Jake Oliver. His mother figures incidentally in the plot; his sister Liz plays a prominent role. The subtext is a fairly traditional one: the protagonist must put the main plotline mystery together; in the process he hopes to put his family together as well.

The principal plot is complex but not opaque. Quinn is on a case working for a man named David Wills. When he gets to a scene he sees another team in place, a Russian team. Then, suddenly, there's a third team, shooting at anyone and everyone. Quinn must figure out who's who, which client is actually running Wills, and how he can protect himself and the members of his team and family against the ultimate baddie (a quite memorable baddie as it turns out).

The pacing is utterly breathless and the backstory comes as a nice surprise. I will grant that Quinn/Jake's sister is a little annoying at times. She has trouble obeying his orders because she has never known what he actually does for a living and she believes that he has abandoned her in the past and, thus, is unworthy of her attentions now. Little does she know the world in which Quinn lives and moves and has his being, but she will learn.

The principal settings are New York, Paris and London (which Battles knows well). The Silenced is not an exercise in existential angst or a plumbing of the depths of human experience, larded with purple prose. It is a lean, international thriller. It holds one's attention very nicely. In short--a perfect summer yarn.

Highly recommended (and as a mass market paperback original, a bargain).

Another outstanding entry in the Jonathan Quinn series
By Elizabeth A. White
Jonathan Quinn is a professional "cleaner," which means it's his job to makes things, usually bodies, disappear. It's a crucial function, but one that usually allows Quinn and his crew to stay out of the direct line of fire since their job doesn't begin until the operation they've been hired to clean up after has ended. The Silenced, the fourth entry in the Quinn series (following The Cleaner, The Deceived, and Shadow of Betrayal), finds Quinn and his crew hired to handle a multi-operation job. First, there's the matter of a long dead body in London a client wants removed from its resting place before the building serving as its tomb is demolished. Sounds simple enough.

And then there's the matter of cleaning up after a few interconnected operations in several different locations in the U.S. A bit more involved, but still relatively straightforward. That is until while cleaning up after the first U.S. job someone else shows up at the job site, a remote location they shouldn't have any idea even exits. Quinn follows the uninvited guest, a mysterious woman, back to her car and overhears her speaking Russian to a companion before they drive away. When the same woman shows up again at a job clear across the country, and before the hit is even carried out this time, it becomes apparent there is another team working from the same list as Quinn and his client. Stranger still, the Russian woman and her team also appear to be interested in that dead body in London. Whose toes are Quinn inadvertently stepping on, and how far will they go to get Quinn out of their way?

Those are questions that Quinn desperately needs the answers to if he's to live up to his professional obligations without compromising himself or his client. The professional, however, suddenly gets very personal when Quinn realizes someone has been poking around in a past he thought he'd taken extraordinary measures to bury. And though Quinn's past has been hinted at in previous books, in The Silenced past collides head-on with present when Quinn's mother and sister are targeted as a means to try to manipulate and control him.

Author Brett Battles has really created something special in Jonathan Quinn. Electrifying and intriguing from the very first moment he appeared on the page in The Cleaner, Quinn has only continued to evolve, revealing ever more complex facets to his personality with each outing. By placing Quinn's family in jeopardy, Battles allows the reader to get a look into the past that helped shape Quinn into the man we know. It also puts the normally calm, cool, and in control Quinn off-stride and in the position of relying even more than usual on his teammates Orlando (also Quinn's girlfriend) and Nate. Nate in particular really gets a chance to shine this time out when he's thrust into the role of serving as protector for Quinn's estranged sister.

As with previous entries in the series Battles continues to show a masterful understanding of pacing, carefully working both flashbacks to Quinn's past and crucial information about the team's current challenges into the plot while always moving the story forward, all with enough gun fights, car chases, twists, and double-crosses to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Longtime readers will enjoy yet another tightly crafted story, but they will relish the revealing look into Quinn's past. And you don't have to have read the prior entries in the series to enjoy The Silenced (though they're excellent and you really should), so if this is the first you've heard of Jonathan Quinn please feel free to use The Silenced as your gateway into this wonderful series.

Sure to Be Another Winner!
By Corri G.
April 5, 2011--Release Day
The Silenced is the fourth book in Brett Battles' Jonathon Quinn series. Previous books (The Cleaner, The Deceived and Shadow of Betrayal) proved face-paced and exciting. The plots are intriguing, the locations exotic, and the characters both lovable and believable. Each book has left me eager for the release of the next. Today I received notice of release for The Silenced, and immediately purchased the Kindle version. I am sure this book will live up to the reputation Brett Battles is earning as a top-knotch mystery thriller author. I will be back with updates.

April 5, 2011--A Little Bit Later
Having now read the first two chapters, I am even more eager to fully jump into reading The Silenced. The book starts off strong and I'm already hooked. I will be back with updates.

April 5, 2011--18 Chapters Later
Fast-moving and interesting action has kept me from putting the book down. I am really regretting that I have somewhere to else I need to be this afternoon.
This is a real page-turner!

April 6, 2011
Now I'm up to Chapter 35.
I don't want to give anything away, so I will rewrite all of this once I finish reading.
It is very difficult to put this book down. It is also very easy to get swept along in the action of this book.

April 6, 2011: 11:34 a.m.
Just finished THE SILENCED.
Two words and a request: Wow! Amazing! Please sir, can I have some more?
I will be back in a bit just as soon as I can figure out how to write a review that does this book justice.
For now, however, I will add that the PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY review quoted with the product description misses the mark completely for this book. In addition to being 180 degrees off kilter in the adjectives used to describe this book, THE PUBLISHERS' WEEKLY review is, in my opinion, a disservice to the mystery community. In the four books by Brett Battles in this series, I see growth and maturity. All books in the Jonathan Quinn series are excellent. I highly recommend Brett Battles' books. The SILENCED again offers fast-paced action, exotic locations, lovable believable characters and details that make all spring to life. I will be awaiting for the next of Brett Battles' books.

April 13, 2011: 11:51 a.m.
I thought about writing this up in a review form, but instead I will let what I have written document my journey through THE SILENCED. A reviewer commented that my review and another five-star review held no criticism for Mr. Battles' book. I have no criticism to offer. Reading this book was a thoroughly enjoyable experience during which I was immersed in the plot. The only dent in bubble was the Amazon sales intro for the book. Having loved the other Jonathon Quinn books so immensely, the bad review left me wondering for the first quarter of THE SILENCED if I was going to be disappointed. After that, I decided to forget the review and make up my own mind. All the words of praise I wrote stand. However, I do think I figured out what it is that ruined the fun for the reviewers I mentioned. In addition to action and mystery, this Battles' book also explores some heavy family issues. I thought those parts were well-handled and added a maturity to the book. Some people do not like to think about those issues. For those people, even if one skims over the family parts, I still believe the book stands as a strong read. So, I would recommend readers make up their own minds. For me, I give THE SILENCED five stars and I will be watching for more in the series.

This was so funny!
By Amazon Customer
I could sympathize with Stacey. She feels like she has nothing to share about herself. I remember feeling that way when I was at that age. I know how she feels! There are parts in this book that made me laugh, actually I laughed through almost the whole book. Ms. Giff sure knows about children and at the same time, how to add humor to it! GOOD GOING, GIFF!

The doctor learns about Pippenella .
By A Customer
Doctor Dolittle wants to do a biography on Pippinella, the green canary. She tells him (in a lot more detail than I am saying) about how she was born in an aviary, bought by an inn owner, then a castle owner, then Aunt Rosie, and finally by a window cleaner. The cleaner had dissapeared one day. What happened? Read and find out.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1945, 10-year-old Sookan's homeland of North Korea is occupied by the Japanese. Left behind while her resistance-fighter father hides in Manchuria and her older brothers toil in Japanese labor camps, Sookan and her remaining family members run a sock factory for the war effort, bolstered only by the dream that the fighting will soon cease. Sookan watches her people--forced to renounce their native ways--become increasingly angry and humiliated. When war's end brings only a new type of domination--from the Russian communists--Sookan and her younger brother must make a harrowing escape across the 38th parallel after their mother has been detained at a Russian checkpoint. Drawn partly from Choi's own experiences, her debut novel is a sensitive and honest portrayal of amazing courage. In clear, graceful prose, she describes a sad period of history that is astonishing in its horror and heart-wrenching in its truth. Readers cannot fail to be uplifted by this account of the triumph of the human spirit in an unjust world. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9-- Ten-year-old Sookan tells of her Korean family's experiences during the Japanese occupation as World War II ends. The Japanese commit cruel, fear-provoking acts against this proud, hopeful family and against the young girls who worked in a sweatshop making socks for the Japanese army. Relief, hope, and anticipation of the return of male family members after the Japanese defeat is short lived as the Russians occupy the country, bringing their language, their customs, and communism to the village. Equally as insensitive to the pride and possessions of the Koreans, they are as bad as the Japanese. Plans are made for Sookan, her mother, and younger brother to escape to South Korea. However, their guide betrays them, causing the children to be separated from their mother, and the two begin a daring and frightening journey to cross the 38th parallel to safety. Through Sookan, the author shares an incredible story of the love and determination of her family, the threatening circumstances that they endured during occupations by two totalitarian governments, and the risks they took to escape to freedom. Readers will get a double bonus from this book--a good story, well told, and the reaffirmation of our faith in the human spirit against incredible adversities . -- Lydia Champlin, Beachwood City Schools, OH

From Kirkus Reviews
A moving fictionalized account of Choi's last months as a child in Pyongyang under the brutal Japanese rule that oppressed Korea for more than 30 years before 1945, and her harrowing escape with her seven-year-old brother south across the 38th parallel. Choi describes the Japanese persecution in an even tone that makes it even more chilling: deliberate destruction of everything of value or beauty, even Grandfather's favorite pine tree; interdiction of religions other than Shinto and of the Korean language; indoctrination of children; systematic starving of the population; the forcing of young women to serve as ``spirit girls'' for the Japanese troops' pleasure. Despite all, Choi's family preserved dignity, familial love, and loyalty to their heritage. When the Russians arrived (not the hoped-for Americans), they proved less vicious but even more effective propagandists than the Japanese. Choi's father, who had spent the war in Manchuria, arranged an escape that was partially successful, even though their guide turned out to be a double agent: the two children, who had already demonstrated their intelligence and mettle, made their way on their own after their mother was detained (miraculously, she joined them later); other relatives left behind to cover for them were executed in retribution. A vividly written, compellingly authentic story that complements Yoko Watkins's fine So Far from the Bamboo Grove (1986), which details a Japanese family's suffering en route from Korea to Japan during the same period. Billy Goats here and there:
By Joomi Lee typing on her dad's account, Mock E aka Mark Lee & wife, Sarai DJ Lee (E)
I love that this book tells the reality of how most (or virtually all Japanese soldiers) behaved during the Japanese Occupation of Korea. "When My Name Was Keoko" by Linda Sue Park, on the other hand, focused on the exception to the rule.

My cousin, "Yuki", speaks fluent Japanese. At one point in time most Japanese treated her like a 2nd class citizen if they ever found out her parents were really Korean.

Japan refused to offer a formal apology. They continue to call these young teenage virgin gang rape victims "Comfort WOMEN". They try to buy their forgiveness without telling the truth of their viciousness.

Does anyone still think it is possible for someone I've nicknamed Billy Goat to buy my forgiveness?

Year of Impossible Goodbyes- A Wonderfully Written Novel!
By A Customer
Sookan, a young girl from North Korea, has been living at home with her brother, Aunt, Mom, and brother under the rule of the Japanese. Just when Sookan thought things would be fine, the emperor takes away the workers from her family's sock factory, and even the the Japanese are suddenly forced out, the Russians take over. Her family has no means of income and is left with their best possible decision: to escape to the south. Sookan, her brother, and her mom leave for freedom. Along the way Sookan's mother gets arrested by Russian guards. Now Sookan and her brother must find away to escape to South Korea will she can be free with her father and two other brothers. Will she make it? Fin out by reading.

I loved this book! At first I was hesitant at reading it because I was not sure how well I'd like the story, but once I began the book I could not put it down. I became enraptured in the story, hoping with the character that she would make it to South Korea. Applause to Choi for a beautifully written book!

I completely enjoyed this book
By Boston Librarian
Note: I am posting this review for my classmate Jon Bush, who wrote it.

It is 1945 and although the Japanese control everything in Korea, Sookan sits with her grandfather under a beautiful pine tree in their yard and they meditate and Sookan feels a little Buddha passed on from him and this is her favorite time of day. I liked this so much and just wanted to hear more about the little Buddha, and the love.

Then the girls come to work at the sock factory, desperately trying to make the quota each day while being paid little or nothing.

Meanwhile the Japanese soldiers come by unannounced and feel free just to walk in and take whatever they like and if they see something beautiful they simply destroy it for the sake of causing pain, and trample over lovely flowers. But Sookan's mother has hidden a tiny packet of seeds, a symbol of hope.

Koreans working for the Japanese even cut down the beloved pine tree, and this is too much for Sookan's Grandfather to bear, and soon he dies. But a part I really loved was when Sookan takes care of his feet, what torture he endured! But also what rage she must have felt!

Then Sookan is sent to Japanese school where the children are treated harshly, not even allowed to use the bathroom!

Then the Russians come and Sookan and her family have to pretend to be loyal Communist Party members while at the same time planning to escape to the south and freedom, where other family members have already gone. I liked this, but again, I wanted more. Loved it. What fear they must have felt. I also wanted again to hear more about the anger.

Then Sookan and her brother make the heroic escape to the south overcoming tremendous adversity, treachery, and confusion. It is bittersweet because they have survived while other loved ones have not.

I completely enjoyed this book. It has hope for anyone anywhere suffering from oppression.

Heaven on Earth, by Marilyn Pappano

Sometimes you have to sin a little to find heaven on earth....

As a private investigator, Melina Dimitris had seen more than her share of relationships gone bad. But that didn’t keep her from believing that Mr. Right was out there. And she thought she’d found him in a tall, ruggedly handsome adventurer with a pair of magic hands.

So when he dumped her without so much as an explanation, Melina hid her devastation by throwing herself into her work. Little did she expect that three runaway children from the small town of Bethlehem would bring him back into her life.

Sebastian Knight knew that if anyone could find his missing daughter, it was the brash P.I. with a passion for kung fu and tight red dresses. Their affair had been brief, white-hot, and clearly heading for something more serious. Until Sebastian ended it rather than risk getting burned again.

Only now that it was too late did he realize the mistake he’d made. But with a trio of eccentric helpers watching over them — and the children — Sebastian and Melina would soon discover that in Bethlehem it was never too late for a miracle.

From Publishers Weekly
Romance lovers looking for a truly engrossing read need look no further than the fifth installment in Pappano's Bethlehem series (following Getting Lucky). In Bethlehem, N.Y., everyone is just plain nice; even the poorest part of town has a hint of respectability to it, and happily-ever-afters are guaranteed. The latter is helped along by a trio of resident guardian angels who pop up in unexpected places to watch over and guide the human inhabitants of this benevolent berg. During this latest visit, the reader meets Melina Dimitris, a brash and beautiful PI from a large Greek family who specializes in finding lost children. When three of Bethlehem's youngsters run away from home in order to find their biological mothers, Melina is called to duty. Too late, she learns that one of the kids is five-year-old Chrissy Knight, daughter of Sebastian Knight, the man with whom she shared a torrid four-day affair a week earlier. Although Sebastian tries to distance himself from Melina, fearing that he'll be burned like he was in a past relationship, he's forced to give love a second chance when he discovers that Melina is pregnant. Although Pappano falls back on a tried-and-true romance formula for the final pages, her fresh voice and delightful characters will leave readers looking forward to the next installment.

From Booklist
The little town of Bethlehem, New York, like its holy namesake, is guarded by angels. Three of them, in fact, and they pop up in the darndest places whenever things look bleak. Sebastian Knight's young daughter has secretly joined two older kids who are running away from home. Private Investigator Melina Dimitris has been called in to find them, and Sebastian insists on going with her. The problem is, he and Melina recently had a one-night stand that lasted four days, and both of them are confused about their feelings for each other. This is Touched by an Angel with a sexy edge. Although Heaven on Earth is a stand-alone book, libraries will also want to buy the rest of the Bethlehem series, because the characters show up from book to book like old friends, and each story builds on the one before it. Fans of such titles as Debbie Macomber's Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy (1999) are going to like this one, too. Shelley Mosley

It's always the woman's fault in Bethlehem
By Charlene Vickers
I was very disappointed in this book by Marilyn Pappano. Most of her books feature believable heroes and heroines and a plausible plot, but Heaven on Earth does not.

Every woman in this book other than the heroine is an evil bitch. Every man is a jerk, but only because the women make them so. You see, in Bethlehem apparently the men are unable to take responsibility for their own poor choices (although they of course always get credit for the good things they do, and often for the good things the women do). It's always some woman's fault that Sebastian is a jerk: his horrible skank wife, his horrible evil mother, even the heroine! He actually comes up with the excuse that he's a jerk because she makes him act that way.

It cannot be understated how annoying this "men always good, women always bad" attitude becomes over the course of a book of this length. Add to it a host of trite romance cliches (the innocent little child in distress, the tortured hero, the silly older woman, the matchmakers, the bitch ex-wife, etc., etc.) and the heroine's incredible attitude problem and you get a book that literally is not worth reading.

A delight to read
By A Customer
Chrissy Knight leaves home in an attempt to find her mother who abandoned her and her father Sebastian. Chrissy knows she cannot talk to her dad about her mom because he turns very sad and is incapable of responding to her matriarchal needs. Two other children run away with Chrissy seeking a long lost parent too. When Sebastian realizes his beloved child is missing, he turns to the best detective he knows, his former lover Melina Demitris. Sebastian knows he hurt Melina when he abruptly ended their relationship, but she does not understand that he left out of fear that loved ones always abandon him.

Led by Melina, Sebastian and the other parents hunt for their lost children before something bad happens to them. Meanwhile the attraction between Melina and Sebastian blossoms into love. However, he must overcome his feelings of inadequacy caused by the desertion and she must surmount her distrust of his staying power before a relationship can permanently form, The first priority must remain finding the kids.

HEAVEN ON EARTH is a powerful "Bethlehem" relationship drama that focuses on various types of love and how those feelings can tear someone's stomach apart. The action packed story line concentrates on the reactions of the characters though at times the guilt seems forced. Marilyn Pappano spins so vivid a tale centering on the ordeal of a parent when a child runs away that the audience can picture being in such a heavy situation.

The Bethlehem NY saga continues...
By mayfayre
When we last left our heroes: Private eye Melina Dimitris had just had a four-day torrid romance with cabinet maker Sebastian Knight who had cowardly and unceremoniously dumped her - Southern former bad boy Ben Foster (who had fallen in love with Melina's friend Lynda Barone) had just revealed to Alanna Dalton that he was her long-missing father - Alanna had difficulty accepting it and decided to run away to Providence to seek out the mother that had abandoned her for a life of drugs - to protect her, her friend Caleb Brown came along, and unbeknownst to them, 7 year old Chrissy Knight decided to tag along to find *her* missing mother.
Whew! And that only touches on the multitude of storylines in Ms. Pappano's ongoing series about the people of Bethlehem NY - a comfortable and homely town, where the complicated romantic lives of its citizens get occasional assistance from a group of guardian angels. This is a throughly engrossing series, though each book is capable of being a stand-alone romance novel.
This book primarily focuses on the sexual explosion that briefly occured between Melina and Sebastian - its effects on their lives and its fallout - and hunt for the three missing children. Melina is a strong, successful, gorgeous, independent and unabashedly sexual woman from a tightknit Greek family. She owns and operates what she calls the best detective agency in New York. She enjoys men and sex, and isn't afraid to be upfront about it. Sebastian is a handsome, lonely, divorced dad who's basically isolated himself from the world for the last four years after his wife of 11 years just left him one day without an explanation, leaving their small daughter in his care. His brief affair with Melina threatened to upset the order of his life and his ongoing mourning of his marriage's dissolution, and he broke it off abruptly.
When the kids go missing, Lynda and Ben (afraid that his revelation was what caused Alanna to run away) call Melina and asks her to try to find the the children, since the police are limited in what they can do. Sebastian, almost beside himself with worry and guilt, manages to tag along with Melina on her search. The book traces the children's search for their missing mothers, introduces a 17 year old runaway who befriends them, and explores the continuing attraction between Melina and Sebastian despite their differing attitudes and emotional scars.
Even without reading the other books, it's easy to pick up the threads of the various past and current storylines, and Ms. Pappano helps out things further by providing a list of characters at the beginning of this book. All of her novels that I've read so far are well-written and engrossing. Her characters are very believable, as are their behaviors. The guardian angel bit is never overdone or obnoxious. The romances are sexy, and while never following a straight path, always wind up where they should. Ms. Pappano is one author whose books I'd buy without even reading the backcover blurb.

It’s the moment every attorney fears most...one careless moment that threatens careers, reputations, lives. For Nina Reilly, it will change everything—and ignite a case where her own clients are witnesses against her...and where the defendant is Nina herself.

As an attorney championing desperate people, Nina Reilly has skirted the edges of legal ethics in pursuit of a just result, but she has never before broken the rule of absolute protection of her clients’ secrets. One September night in Lake Tahoe when her unlocked truck is stolen, her life changes forever. Gone are her most sensitive case files, complete with the sometimes brutally candid notes she took while interviewing her clients.

It’s every attorney’s nightmare. And now the worst has happened: The secrets are being revealed, one by one, in ways that will cause the greatest harm. Nina’s own clients complain to the State Bar of California, and suddenly Nina is fighting for her license and her livelihood in a legal proceeding that may ultimately lead her to disbarment. In desperation, Nina turns to her ex-husband, celebrated San Francisco lawyer Jack McIntyre, to represent her.

And as personal tensions erupt between McIntyre and Nina’s sometime boyfriend, private investigator Paul van Wagoner...as reputations are ruined and people begin to die...a chilling pattern of rage and revenge comes into focus. Someone is bent on destroying the lives of Nina’s clients and, in the process, Nina Reilly.

Amazon.com Review
Was there something more criminal than grand theft auto involved in the disappearance of Nina Reilly's truck--and the legal files locked inside it? When confidential information from those files that could endanger Nina's clients and destroy her reputation surfaces, it begins to look as though someone wants to put the feisty Lake Tahoe attorney out of business. There's no shortage of suspects, including a policewoman who blames Nina for short-circuiting her promotion, a client with a guilty secret who's convinced it was Nina's negligence that lost his custody case, and a rival attorney who's seething over all the high-profile clients he's lost because of Nina's growing prominence. With help from her ex-husband, a legal malpractice specialist, and her lover, who's also her investigator, Reilly races the clock to get to the bottom of the smear campaign and save her license to practice in this smart, sexy thriller that makes the most of the author's gifts of clever plotting, characterization, and dramatic tension. Reilly, a single mom whose personal life is as chaotic as her career, is a series heroine who gets more interesting with every new adventure. The conclusion of this one, the author's eighth, finds Reilly pointed in a new direction with plenty of interesting possibilities for the future. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Penned by sisters Pamela and Mary O'Shaughnessy, this eighth novel to feature South Lake Tahoe attorney Nina Reilly puts the lawyer in the defendant's chair. Ever since she was a little girl, Nina has believed that rules are what people use to make sense of the world and that law is a way of enforcing the rules to keep the world sane. But when her truck is stolen, along with her three most sensitive case files, her sane world turns topsy-turvy. In the wrong hands, those files could compromise a client's chance at fair visitation rights, affect a second client's insurance claim and put two girls at risk from the murderer whose crime they witnessed. Suddenly, Nina finds herself facing possible disbarment as she's brought up on disciplinary charges before the California State Bar Court. Current boyfriend Paul and ex-husband Jack try to help Nina figure out who stole the files and, more importantly, who is trying to destroy her life. The initial setup of Nina's predicament is taut as a wire, but the story bogs down in court, where much of the testimony, while realistic, is filler: a space-occupying rehash of what the reader already knows. As for the climax, it's so hokey that the dialogue reads like an old Batman episode. Chances are, though, since this is just a first offense, series fans will release this effort on its own recognizance in the hopes that the next case will be a winner.

Ambitious plotting....
By L. Quido
Perri O'Shaughnessy, the entertaining sister team of writers, serve up an especially interesting plot for their Lake Tahoe lawyer-heroine, Nina Reilly. Nina's confronted with a situation that could ruin her for life, and three client cases are commingled with her own downfall, when the client files are stolen.
Nina's love life with her investigator is more settled in this outing, although briefly challenged by her ex-husband. Her three clients are diverse, and the reaction and chain events set off by the loss of the files follow widely divergent paths, as well. It's obvious that Nina is someone's target, but who is her enemy?
4 stars due to the complex and interesting plot, and the unique ending, which leaves the reader guessing what direction the series will take in the future. Not nearly as good in characterization or plot fulfillment as previous Nina Reilly episodes, but the O'Shaughnessy novels are heads and shoulders above most courtroom fiction, and I eagerly await the next one!

Disappointing
By A Customer
I usually relish the chance to read a new Perri O'Shaughnessy.
I thought the main plot line was somewhat unbelievable. If Nina is such a hot shot lawyer, and of course we know she is from the previous books, she would not leave her briefcase containing such
important files, in her car overnight.
The female police officer and the female prosecuting attorney are just totally unbelievable in their language and approach to Nina. Very stereotypical, we don't like beautiful smart women.
