The Chemistry of Death, by Simon Beckett

Three years ago, David Hunter moved to rural Norfolk to escape his life in London, his gritty work in forensics, and a tragedy that nearly destroyed him. Working as a simple country doctor, seeing his lost wife and daughter only in his dreams, David struggles to remain uninvolved when the corpse of a woman is found in the woods, a macabre sign from her killer decorating her body. In one horrifying instant, the quiet summer countryside that had been David’s refuge has turned malevolent—and suddenly there is no place to hide.

The village of Manham is tight-knit, far from the beaten path. As a newcomer, Dr. Hunter is immediately a suspect. Once an expert in analyzing human remains, he reluctantly joins the police investigation—and when another woman disappears, it soon becomes personal. Because this time she is someone David knows, someone who has managed to penetrate the icy barrier around his heart. With a killer’s bizarre and twisted methods screaming out to him, with a brooding countryside beset with suspicion, David can feel the darkness gathering around him. For as the clock ticks down on a young woman’s life, David must follow a macabre trail of clues—all the way to its final, horrifying conclusion.

From Publishers Weekly
British author Beckett (Fine Lines) delivers a promising serial-killer whodunit, the first of a new crime series. Dr. David Hunter, a successful forensic anthropologist, retreats to the quiet Norfolk village of Manham, where he works as a general practitioner, after a drunk driver claims the lives of his wife and daughter. Three years after this tragedy, the shattering discovery of the mutilated corpse of a neighbor, Sally Palmer, forces Hunter back into the world of studying decomposing corpses. When another woman disappears, Hunter and the police conclude that a serial predator is at work, and they race against time to prevent a second murder. High quality prose and a compelling if flawed hero haunted by the memory of his family help compensate for a plot that starts strongly but winds down to a somewhat predictable resolution. (Sept.)

From Booklist
With so many women forensic specialists on the mystery circuit, it's a pleasure to have a man join the ranks--even if he is a reluctant draftee. Endeavoring to escape a tragedy that took his wife and young daughter, David Hunter leaves forensics behind to take a job in a rural medical practice in a tightly knit English village. Although still an outsider even after three years on the job, David has begun to make a friends; he has even met a woman he likes. Suddenly, the village is turned on its ear; one of its own is a serial killer, and David, at first a suspect, is enlisted to apply his medical specialty to find the killer. When his girlfriend is kidnapped, he can no longer pretend detachment, and his involvement leads to unraveling some terrifying, surprising secrets about people he thought he knew. Let's hope Hunter returns quickly and Beckett continues to find such a nice balance between forensic detail and thrilling action. Stephanie Zvirin

A Winner
By B. K. Walker
I have been a avid reader of Kathy Reichs, and until her last couple of books, Patricia Cornwell. I discovered Simon Beckett quite by accident through a multi-path search looking at the 'Customers who Bought This Also Bought...' and read the reviews. Okay, my thoughts were, new author for me - I'll take a chance. Let's just say, I'm hooked. With the backdrop of Great Britain, (can't get enough of it) the male forensic perspective is, as much as I respect Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwell and their respective female forensic protagonists, refreshing.

I enjoyed the Chemistry of Death so much that I bought Written in Bone. I'm about half way through that and I'm totally transported to the remote Hebrides of Scotland. His characters (even the dead ones) and the scenes he portrays literally come alive. Knowing this is an author whose books will take a place of prominence on my bookshelf, I also just bought Whispers of the Dead.

It's easy to become completely absorbed in his books and I don't want to put them down at night even though I know at some point I have to turn the light off and go to sleep. I tell myself, 'just one more page' until it's the wee hours of the morning by the time I force myself to put it down.

Looking forward to the next one!

Excellent Forensics, Average Procedural
By zorba
The author's intimate knowledge of how dead bodies decay provide an unusual though grim dimension to this English police procedural. Which is good, since this first book by Beckett was not as good as it could be. Granted, there was enough suspense to keep the reader engaged, but it somehow seemed to lack substance. I don't know: I think in the hands of a more experienced author the book would have soared. On the other hand, the ending, though frantic, was surprising. I've seen thriller authors get better and better as they turn out subsequent books and I would say that Beckett, already quite good, will someday be quite excellent. He's off to a good start with "Chemistry of Death."

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3?Ms. Rooney and her Polk Street crowd are visiting New York City, and Emily Arrow faces a dilemma. She has been dubbed the "New York City Expert" and all she knows about it is that her Aunt Caroline lives in the Bronx. Worse than that, she has let her class down by not watering the "This Is Life" plants and allows Sherri Dent to take the rap. She finds a "baby book" at the library to help her learn about the Big Apple but has to keep it hidden between a fat book on plants and a biography of Betsy Ross. As the bus carrying the young travelers wends its way through the city, Emily alternates between impressing them with her knowledge of the city's landmarks and supplying readers with some fascinating information about Betsy Ross. Sherri finally learns that she has been dubbed as the plant killer and Emily apologizes. The trip ends with a surprise sleep-over at Aunt Caroline's and readers leave the crowd happy, tired, and full of pizza. Sims's occasional full-page black-and-white sketches add humor and character to the story. A 45-page guide to New York City complete with maps and phone numbers is included. An easy-to-read chapter book for fans of the series or for youngsters planning to visit New York City.?Suzanne Hawley, Laurel Oak Elementary School, Naples, FL

The Friendship , set in Mississippi in 1933, relates the unexpected consequences when Cassie Logan, the heroine of Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry , sees a black customer call a white storekeeper by his first name. In The Gold Cadillac , a black family encounters ignorance and prejudice during a drive from their Toledo home to Mississippi in their brand-new 1950 Cadillac. Both stories depict Taylor's customary sensitivity to racial issues. Ages 7-11.

About the Author
"I do not know how old I was when the daydreams became more than that, and I decided to write them down, but by the time I entered high school, I was confident that I would one day be a writer." -- Mildred D. Taylor

Newbery Award-winning author, Mildred D. Taylor, was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she spent two years in Ethiopia with the Peace Corps teaching English and history. Returning to the United States, Ms. Taylor entered the University of Colorado's School of Journalism, from which she received her Master of Arts degree. As a member of the Black Student Alliance, she worked with students and University officials in structuring a Black Studies program at the University. She currently lives in Colorado.

"From as far back as I can remember, my father taught me a different history from the one I learned in school. By the fireside in our Ohio home and in Mississippi, where I was born and where my father's family had lived since the days of slavery, I had heard about our past. It was not an organized history beginning in a certain year, but one told through stories--stories about great-grandparents and aunts and uncles and others that stretched back through the years of slavery and beyond. It was a history of ordinary people, some brave, some not so brave, but basically people who had done nothing more spectacular than survive in a society designed for their destruction."

Powerful images, descriptions, and language grip the reader!
By crdoo@aol.com
I teach a reading methods course in a large university. In an attempt to show them how to weave literature into multicultural and social studies themes I read a significant portion of The Friendship to my students. You could have heard a pin drop. My students were deeply moved by Ms. Taylor's use of language and descriptions of the intensity of the white's hatred of the African Americans. Some of my students were really disturbed by this, and stated they would feel reluctant to read this book aloud in their future classrooms. However, I explained to them that the feelings of indignancy they felt toward the Wallace's, and other prejudiced whites in the story were precisely what Ms. Taylor was attempting to illicit in her writings, and would be exactly what we would want our students to experience. Ms. Taylor's writings are effective because they are so vivid, and obviously so real to her. Because of that, they become real to us.

For good readers or older children
By J. Fournier
My 7 year old is not a good reader, but I got this book on the recommendation of his upcoming second grade teacher. It is really much too hard for him. It's similar in difficulty to a Magic Tree House book. The Henry and Mudge series is more his speed. So if Magic Tree House is your level, then so is Pee Wee Scouts.

Although in the end sportsmanship and charity prevail, I did find some aspects of the story troubling. For example, when the main character thinks another girl is acting selfish, she thinks to herself ("hex on you"). This is not an idea my son has ever been exposed to, and I found myself editing it out more than once. She also complains about school a lot, and the last thing I want is for my son to dread second grade as he enjoys summer vacation.

Also, it seems like there are an awful lot of characters to keep track of. I suppose if a child really likes the series and reads all the books, they will eventually keep the characters straight. But all the names are confusing. The story is told more as speaking parts rather than a narrative.

My boy asked for this series specifically for Christmas. Of the 20 or so books he recieve these are by far his favorite. He has read each one 2 or 3 times by now. I would happily buy him as many of these as he requests.

Never Go Back (Jack Reacher), by Lee Child

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS

Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is a novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Don’t miss Lee Child’s short story “High Heat” in the back of the book.

Praise for Never Go Back

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Welcome to the relentless world of Jack Reacher and his impressive tendency to be in the wrong place at the right time. . . . Child has created an iconic character that other thriller writers try to emulate but don’t come close to matching. He has a talent for taking material that in the hands of other authors would be stale and making it seem fresh. . . . Tight and compelling . . . Never Go Back is one of Child’s best novels.”—Associated Press

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.”—Lansing State Journal

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.”—San Antonio Express-News

“For the pure pleasure of uncomplicated, nonstop action, no one touches Reacher.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Brilliant . . . Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher.”—Booklist (starred review)

“One of the best in the series.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Since talking to Maj. Susan Turner on the telephone from South Dakota in 2010's 61 Hours (bestseller Childs's 14th Jack Reacher novel), the former military cop has been heading to the Virginia headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP, in hopes of meeting her. In this 18th outing, Reacher finally arrives in Virginia, where his plan to meet Turner is initially thwarted by thugs who want to keep them apart. An arrest for a crime Reacher doesn't remember committing 16 years earlier and the dangled bait that he might be a father provoke him to run, kicking off a cross-country odyssey. As usual, head-busting physicality and analytical problem solving play key roles in Reacher's fight to prove his innocence and expose his enemies. Manhunts on both coasts, a link to corruption in Afghanistan in the wake of the U.S. military drawdown, and the possibility for romance between Reacher and Turner make this entry one of the best in the series. Agent: Darley Anderson, Darley Anderson Literary. (Sept.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Jack Reacher, the loner thumbing his way through life, despises entanglements. So what could he possibly be doing going back to his old barracks in Washington, D.C., to take a woman to dinner? Yes, the woman, Major Susan Turner, is now the C.O. of Reacher’s former unit, and, yes, he liked her voice when he talked to her on the phone in 61 Hours (2010), but, really, Reacher, what were you thinking? Naturally, when Reacher arrives on the base to ask Turner out, he discovers a whopping mess—and lands in the middle of it. Turner is in the brig, and the army promptly arrests Reacher on what seems to be a trumped-up charge involving a case from decades ago. And what’s this about Reacher having a daughter, of all things, whose mother is suing for child support? None of it makes sense, except that somehow it must all tie together. Nothing to do but break out of the brig, with Turner in tow, and set things right, which requires a cross-country road trip, more than a little rough stuff, and a whole lot of fretting about entanglements. Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher. Will he, of all people (“Ninety-nine of us grow up to fear the howling wolf, and one grows up to envy it. I’m that guy.”), really hang up his toothbrush (his only traveling accoutrement) this time? Child has spent 17 novels committing his hero to the call of the wild, and now he dangles a dinner date and a possible daughter in front of the howling wolf? Brilliant. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Published in nearly 40 countries and more than 70 languages with more than 70 million copies in print, the Jack Reacher series is a publishing phenomenon and won’t go away anytime soon. --Bill Ott

Where is Jack Reacher?
By Rosemary
Where is Jack Reacher? Who is this imposter?

I am a huge Lee Child / Jack Reacher fan, and have been reading these books for years, but it has got to the point where I say that this could very well be my last Jack Reacher purchase. It pains me to say this, as these books have been the highlight of my reading calender for so long, but the decline has become more noticeable with this book.

There were a few times when I seriously considered not finishing the book, but this is Lee Child and Reacher, surely it can only get better? No, the writing was consistent throughout, it was boring and repetitive. The plot was weak, and every solution to a problem on both sides was just too convenient, unbelievably so on many occasions.

Jack Reacher, in my opinion, has become arrogant - he is no longer the Jack Reacher I have enjoyed reading about all these years. This new Jack does things because he can - not because he must in order to survive. The ridiculous fire episode and the aeroplane scene clinched the deal for me.

The ending, and the reason for all the trouble Jack found himself in, was crazy, far-fetched and not what we have come to expect from Lee Child either.

I have been holding back on this review for days, but when you take the price of this book and what is between the covers, I think it is important that potential readers know that this is not up to Lee Child's earlier standards.

I am definitely the minority when it comes to reviewing this book - the 5 star reviews are rolling in on both Amazon and Goodreads. Maybe you will still enjoy this book if you are a die-hard Reacher fan, if not, I would give it a skip and rather try Lee Childs earlier Jack Reacher novels - they were brilliant.

Would I recommend this book? No
Will I buy the next book? Not on pre-order, I will wait for the reviews to come in first before buying - if at all.

Is author Child burning out?
By Brian Baker
For the last couple of books, Jack Reacher has been trying to make it back to the East Coast to meet the woman who has, up to this point, simply been a voice on the phone helping him out on his adventures.

Well, he finally makes it, and when he shows up at the headquarters of the MP unit she now commands, he's mousetrapped. She's been arrested and relieved of command, and he's been accused of crimes he'd allegedly committed back when he was an MP himself; he's recalled back into active duty - making him subject to military discipline and judicial punishment - and placed under arrest.

He manages to break her and himself out of jail, and the rest of the story is about how he tries to clear both their names by getting to the truth at the bottom of these events.

I've long been a Reacher fan, having read the entire body of work, and thoroughly enjoyed them until the last few offerings. I thought the last two were particularly weak. There are elements of this book that I thought were pretty well done... somewhat reminiscent of the classic Reacher of yore.

Unfortunately, when I got to the end of the story and it was revealed what was actually driving this entire plot against Reacher and his girlfriend, I had to wonder what author Child had been smoking. I can't say more because it would be a huge spoiler. I will say this: I thought it was absolutely ridiculous.

Further, there wasn't much "payoff" to the reader in the way the story ended. Certainly not in the sense of the "classic" Reacher books of old. In many ways, Reacher's somewhat of a bystander or observer in the resolution of this story.

Overall, I found the book to be somewhat shallow and rushed. Not nearly as emotionally engaging as the earlier Reacher books. I have to wonder if, after having written so many of them, Child is getting tired of flogging a dying horse; if the well's going dry.

Anyway, 3 stars. Not as bad as the last two books, but not nearly as good as the early works.

Back on Active Duty
By TJ Mccarthy
Getting a Reacher novel in the mail is a lot like being handed an ice cream cone on a sweltering summer day. It's simply not there for admiring or slowly savouring, you tuck right in and enjoy every lick. And like the cone, "Never Go Back" does not disappoint.

This time, Reacher travels back to his old MP unit to meet its new commander, mainly because he was intrigued by the sound of her voice on the telephone. Once there, he finds that she's been locked up, and he is being brought back on active duty so he can answer to a homicide charge and paternity suit. As always, nothing is quite as it seems, and Reacher has to peel back layer after layer to get to the truth. All while staying one step ahead of the law, drug dealers, and the Army.

I don't know if the Reacher series can get any better, but it certainly isn't getting any worse or showing any author fatigue. The writing is crisp, the pacing brilliant, and the plot is deliciously convoluted and innovative. You simply cannot put this book down, it's that compelling and addictive.

The one weakness is Child's lack of understanding of the U.S. military. Reacher refers to an Army major as "miss", something no recent field grade officer would ever do except as a deliberately provocative insult. He has a base with three checkpoints at the entry and exit. I've never seen a base with more than one entry checkpoint, and only an exit checkpoint during exercises or times of heightened security. Checking everyone's ID and trunk three times on the way off-base is manpower intensive and utterly pointless. There are other things that seem hinky to me, and I think an Army staff officer would point out more flaws. It doesn't ruin the book, but if you're going to write about the military, you owe it to the readers to have your facts straight.

That aside, the book is simply outstanding. The Reacher series clearly has a lot of life left in it, and I'm already looking forward to the next one!

From Kirkus Reviews
Lying amid the semiprecious stones of this collection are three genuine gems: Walter Dean Myers's hilarious story about a spectral visitor from the far future who steps out of a closet to ask about the poorly understood religion known as ``Hoops''; a satisfying tale from Barbara Ann Porte about a ghost who protects her family from a trio of menacing party crashers; and Janet Taylor Lisle's nape-prickler, ``Face in the Rafters,'' in which a young married couple is gleefully told the hour of their deaths. As he did in Funny You Should Ask (1992), Gale offers only new stories from award-winning children's authors; this is an all-star lineup, and the 12 selections are polished, uncontrived, and very readable. Each is followed by a list of awards; several authors also comment on their stories, or about ghosts in general. A winning formula--in a gathering of tales that will leave readers more amused than frightened, and hoping for more. (Short Stories. 9-12) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Clara Luna's name means "clear moon" in Spanish. But lately, her head
has felt anything but clear. One day a letter comes from Mexico, written in Spanish: Dear Clara, We invite you to our house for the summer. We will wait for you on the day of the full moon, in June, at the Oaxaca airport. Love, your grandparents.

Fourteen-year-old Clara has never met her father's parents. She knows he snuck over the border from Mexico as a teenager, but beyond that, she knows almost nothing about his childhood. When she agrees to go, she's stunned by her grandparents' life: they live in simple shacks in the mountains of southern Mexico, where most people speak not only Spanish, but an indigenous language, Mixteco.

The village of Yucuyoo holds other surprises, too-- like the spirit waterfall, which is heard but never seen. And Pedro, an intriguing young goatherder who wants to help Clara find the waterfall. Hearing her grandmother’s adventurous tales of growing up as a healer awakens Clara to the magic in Yucuyoo, and in her own soul. What The Moon Saw is an enchanting story of discovering your true self in the most unexpected place.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 5-9–Out of the blue, 14-year-old Clara Luna receives a letter from her grandparents inviting her to spend the summer with them in Mexico. She has never met her fathers parents and he has not seen them since he left his homeland more than 20 years ago. Wary of visiting people she doesnt know and yet frustrated and restless with her life at home, Clara embarks on the two-day journey to the remote village of Yucuyoo. Through her experiences there, she discovers not only her own strength as an individual, but also her talent for healing, which she shares with her grandmother. The exquisitely crafted narrative includes Claras first-person impressions and descriptions interspersed with chapters of her grandmothers story. The characters are well developed, each with a fully formed backstory. Resau does an exceptional job of portraying the agricultural society sympathetically and realistically, naturally integrating Spanish words and phrases in Mixteco into the plot without distracting from it. The atmosphere is mystical and dreamlike, yet energetic. Readers will relish Claras adventures in Mexico, as well as her budding romance with Pedro. This distinguished novel will be a great addition to any collection.–Melissa Christy Buron, Epps Island Elementary, Houston, TX

*Starred Review* "In all my fourteen years, I hadn't thought much about Mexico," says Clara, who lives in suburban Maryland with her American mother and Mexican father, who crossed the border illegally long ago. Then Clara's Mexican grandparents invite her to spend the summer with them in Oaxaca, and she finds herself on a plane, traveling to see a part of her father's life she has barely considered. Resau's deeply felt, lyrical debut follows Clara through her summer with her grandparents, who live in small huts in the remote Oaxacan mountains. After her grandfather tells Clara that her grandmother "can see a whole world that the rest of us cannot," Clara learns that Abuelita is a healer, and in alternating first-person narratives, Resau juxtaposes Abuelita's stories of her coming-of-age with Clara's own awakening. Pedro, a young neighbor, stirs some of Clara's first romantic desires and forces questions about cultural misperceptions. The metaphors of personal discovery are sometimes heavy and esoteric, and the transitions between narrators are occasionally contrived. But in poetic, memorable language, Resau offers a rare glimpse into an indigenous culture, grounding her story in the universal questions and conflicts of a young teen. Readers who enjoyed Ann Cameron's Colibri (2003) will find themselves equally swept up in this powerful, magical story, and they'll feel, along with Clara, "the spiderweb's threads, connecting me to people miles and years away." An unbelievable novel from a amazing new writer!
By Stephanie Kreuz
I was lucky enough to meet Laura Resau when she came and gave a talk in my Children's Literature class in Maryland. I have to say that there isn't a thing in this book that wasn't derived from her life experiences. When she talks about the "limpia," the ritual steam baths, and lifestyles of the people in Mexico, she was there, she saw them, she experienced them. This is what makes this novel so compelling; from the beginning, the characters feel like real people and it's because they were based on real people!

Don't be detered by the seemingly young adult cover, this is a book for all ages! More than anything, this book is about a girl named Clara trying to find herself, and does so when she visits her grandparents in a small village in Mexico. The characters in this book are so real and they are so natural that you can't help but be drawn into their lives.

Clara is a typical teenage girl who needs her tv and her computer, but she finds that these things aren't nearly as important when she begins to live in Mexico. By reading this book, you not only learn more about a culture that is rarely or if ever talked about, but you may find that you learn a little about yourself and what your true passion is. If anything, you'll come away with a new appreciation for an area of the world that you know little about.

Overall, this is an unputdownable book and deserves the attention of everyone! If you are lucky enough to have Laura Resau coming to your area, go see her and listen to her talk about her experiences and where she gets her inspiration from! It will definitly inspire you.

Not just for young adults
By Rebecca Dixon
A friend mentioned this book because I'm going to Oaxaca, Mexico soon. She told me it was for young adults, "but." I found it totally charming and very informative. The State of Oaxaca is rich in cultural diversity, peoples who've kept their pre-Columbian way of life. This book did an excellent job of showing one of these cultures very clearly from the eyes of an American. It also gave lush descriptions of the mountain landscape as well as Oaxaca City (several decades ago). It is well written, with a well-paced and exciting narrative and lovable characters portrayed in depth.

Written in Bone, by Simon Beckett

“I took the skull from its evidence bag and gently set it on the stainless steel table. ‘Tell me who you are. . . .’ ” With this silent plea, forensic expert Dr. David Hunter ignites a harrowing murder investigation on a windswept Scottish island, and a tale of menace, sexuality, and revenge unravels—along with the chilling message that a killer has…

Dr. David Hunter should be in London with the woman he loves and a past he can’t quite shake off. Instead, as a favor to a beleaguered cop, Hunter travels to a remote island in the Outer Hebrides to inspect a baffling set of remains. A forensic anthropologist, he has seen bodies destroyed by all forms of violence, but even he is surprised at what he finds: human remains burned beyond recognition—all within the confines of an otherwise undamaged, unoccupied cottage. Local police want to rule the death accidental. But Hunter’s examination of the victim’s charred skull tells him that this woman, no doubt a stranger to the close-knit island of Runa, was murdered by someone nearby.

Within days, two more people are dead by fire. Hunter’s job is to coax the dead into telling their stories—but now that he’s beginning to hear them, he is staggered by the truth. Working with only the barest of clues, he peels back the layers of mysteries past and present, exposing the tangle of secrets at the heart of this strange community—from the deceptions of a wealthy couple to the bitterness of an ex-cop and the secrets of a lonely single mother—as a tale of rage and perversion comes full circle…then explodes in a series of violent acts and shocking twists.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In the exceptional second thriller from British author Beckett to feature forensic anthropologist David Hunter (after 2006's The Chemistry of Death), the former GP investigates a suspicious death on Runa, a small island in the Hebrides. With the mainland official force preoccupied with a horrific train wreck that might have been the work of terrorists, Hunter must try to determine whether the victim was murdered. On Runa, Hunter finds a badly burned corpse with the feet and one hand oddly untouched, in a cottage that shows little fire damage. Could spontaneous combustion have been the cause? The suspense mounts along with the body count and the approach of a storm that cuts off the island from the outside world. While some plot elements may be a little too close to those of the prior book, Beckett does them better here, and is especially adept at blending first- and third-person narratives to heighten the tension. Beckett's dynamite follow-up to The Chemistry of Death (2006) takes David Hunter back to his roots as a forensic anthropologist. This go-round is both better written and a good deal more intriguing, with twists and turns up to the very last dramatic page. Called in to examine a badly burned body found in a deserted hut on a small island in the Hebrides, David hopes he won't be delayed long. His relationship with Jenny, whom he met in the first book, is deteriorating, and he's feeling burned out. Unfortunately, what he discovers is murder, and when a killer storm prevents promised help from arriving, he's left to find out what he can with only a bad-tempered, alcoholic local copper and a retired officer who lives on the island to help. Dark secrets and long-held resentments erupt in the small community, putting David's life at risk and impeding his efforts at every turn. Forensic details never overwhelm the story, and Beckett is on solid ground when it come to plotting and ratcheting up the tension. His ending is a stunner. Zvirin, Stephanie

"Look at the puzzle."
By E. Bukowsky
Simon Beckett's second thriller, "Written in Bone," brings back forensic anthropologist David Hunter, an intelligent, dedicated, and compassionate scientist who takes his job so seriously that his girlfriend is rapidly becoming exasperated with him. Since the deaths of his wife and child, Hunter has become obsessed with giving each victim entrusted to his care an identity and a measure of justice. This time, Hunter is sent to a secluded island named Runa, in the Outer Hebrides. His task is to examine an unidentified body that was left partially burned in an undamaged cottage. Was the death an accident, suicide, or murder? If it was murder, why was the body exposed for anyone to find? Assisting Hunter are a drunken and incompetent police sergeant, a rookie constable, and a retired detective inspector. Hunter is chagrined when a horrific storm blows through Runa, cutting the island off from the mainland; no reinforcements will be arriving anytime soon.

"Written in Bone" follows the conventions of a "closed island" mystery. The hero is left to his own devices, trying to maintain control of a rapidly deteriorating situation. Not only is it impossible for Hunter to get outside help, but the weather is so wretched that it is difficult to preserve the remains for examination. There is no well-equipped morgue or laboratory on Runa, and Hunter is reduced to using freezer bags for storage of body parts. In spite of the primitive conditions that prevail, Hunter is resourceful enough to draw logical conclusions from the available evidence.

The strongest aspects of the book are its beautifully depicted setting and vivid characters. Beckett captures the wild ferocity of the storm that buffets this remote and lonely place; the towering waves and gale force winds crash against the shore, threatening to capsize the boats moored in the harbor. Against this forbidding backdrop, Beckett tells a gothic tale of jealousy, rage, and perverted sexuality. Among the large cast are Maggie Cassidy, an aggressive reporter with a nose for a juicy story; Andrew Brody, a retired police officer who still retains some of his old skills; Ellen McLeod, a hotel owner and devoted single mother; Andrew and Grace Strachan, a wealthy couple with a proprietary interest in keeping the island economically solvent; and the alcoholic Sergeant Fraser, who finds himself way out of his league when it comes to investigating violent crimes.

For the most part, "Written in Bone" is engrossing and suspenseful. The forensic details are grisly but compelling, and Beckett is willing to kill off likeable characters, which many authors avoid at all costs. The novel's most egregious flaw is its tangled and wildly implausible ending. There is quite enough going on without adding extraneous plot elements that are a bit too self-consciously clever. Still, "Written in Bone" has enough entertainment value to keep readers turning pages furiously, eager to see how the mystery will ultimately play out.

Forensic heaven...with a scenic setting
By Helen Simpson
"Given the right temperature, everything burns. Wood. Clothing. People.
At 250º Celsius, flesh will ignite. Skin blackens and splits. The subcutaneous fat starts to liquefy, like grease in a hot pan. Fuelled by it, the body starts to burn. Arms and legs catch first, acting as kindling to the greater mass of the torso. Tendons and muscle fibres contract, causing the burning limbs to move in an obscene parody of life. Last to go are the organs. Cocooned in moistness, they often remain even after the rest of the soft tissue has been consumed.
But bone is, quite literally, a different matter."

Beckett certainly knows how to draw the reader in from the first page.
He never reduces himself to writing gore, instead he fascinates us with fact.

I enjoyed the story, the characters and the setting. Beckett's descriptions of the remote island and the weather conditions conjur up a wonderfully realistic image and an ideal setting for a thriller.

Throw in some red herrings and a couple of twists and he's cracked it again. Not only that but we get an excellent cliff hanger too!!

`Our lives, and sometimes deaths, are stories written in bone.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Forensic anthropologist Dr David Hunter is called on to look into a `fire death' on Runa, a remote Outer Hebridean island. It isn't immediately clear whether the death is suspicious or accidental, but something tells Dr Hunter that there is more to this death than seems immediately apparent.

Hampered by foul weather, a lack of equipment and remoteness from specialist assistance, Dr Hunter attempts to find the answers. The remote community itself has some deep, dark secrets and the more information Dr Hunter uncovers, the more complex the investigation becomes. It soon becomes clear that there is a murderer on the island and, as Runa becomes completely cut off from the outside world, suspense builds as the body count increases.

This is the second of Simon Beckett's mysteries to feature Dr David Hunter. I've not yet read the first, but I certainly will be.

Highly recommended.

Harold Schernoff, 14-year-old science whiz and social nerd, has a theory for every problem, from dating, to bullies, to making money, to sports, to how to buy a car when you're underage. When he and his buddy team up to put his theories to the test, nothing goes according to plan. A ski lesson becomes: Mass x Acceleration x Slope of hill = eeeAAGGHHH. As for first dates, only Harold could mastermind such disaster. Only Harold could go fishing and get caught by the fish. And only Gary Paulsen could write such a wonderfully funny story of friendship.

Two junior high boys lose their "uncool" status when they kiss girls and foil some football team thugs in this comedy set in the 1950s. "Joyfully unconventional thinking and quirky writing," said PW. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8. A slapstick novel about friendship set in Minnesota. The book includes autobiographical elements from Paulsen's own life (alcoholic parents, a stint in the army, running the Iditarod). Both the first-person narrator and his best (and only) friend, Harold Schernoff, are 14-year-old social outcasts. Harold also is a science whiz, complete with slide rule, who devises theories to solve all sorts of problems, from dating to dealing with bullies and learning to ski. The chapter on his solutions to first-date awkwardness is hilarious. Perhaps the best chapter is the one in which the boys, although underage, buy their very first car and drive it for a glorious eight miles before the engine explodes. Paulsen captures adolescent feelings perfectly; indeed, the novel becomes a survival story with a twist?survival of adolescence. Asides are interjected parenthetically comparing then and now. An afterword lets readers know what happens to the characters so memorably drawn in the story. Simplicity of style, humor, and great characterization make this another winner from a popular author.?Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland,

From Booklist
Gr. 5-7. Paulsen's humorous novel, narrated by a 14-year-old, self-confessed geek, focuses on the narrator's friend, Harold. Equally geeky and brainy as well, Harold takes the lead in an episodic series of adventures ranging from the unusual but pragmatic (enrolling in home economics to meet girls) to the sneaky and possibly suicidal (taking revenge on the football players who broke his slide rule by giving them a cake flavored with 43 boxes of chocolate laxatives). The novel's late-1950s setting may limit its appeal somewhat, but Paulsen taps into two factors that haven't become outdated in the last four decades: adolescent angst over popularity with the opposite sex and the broad humor that appeals to some pre-teen and teenage boys. Hilarious Harry
By A Customer
The Schernoff Discoveries is a quick moving, funny book about friendship. The story takes place in Minnesota, in two small towns called Hilard and Peat roughly 10 years ago. Gary tells the story about different hilarious challenges two good friends faced at fourteen years of age and what became of them.
I like The Schernoff Discoveries because it is about what happens in school and includes important issues like friendship and dealing with peer pressure. The main characters are Harold and Gary. They are two kids from different sides of the tracks. Harold is smart and daring; Gary is cautious and not so smart. One good example of Harold being daring and Gary being cautious, Harold decided that they needed to go skiing, because girls liked skiers. Harold read in a book on how, even though Gary was against this idea, he went along anyways. They should have listened to Gary. They enjoy school and like girls a lot. They figured out a way to change their schedules so that they would be the only boys in the Home Economics classroom full of girls. This worked for them because they could get to know the girls without competition or insults from other boys. On the downside, the boys were picked on for being the only boys in the room, especially by the football team. With the help of the Home Economics class, the girls and Harold were able to get even with the football team. They enjoy each other's friendship and play jokes on each other, even though others around them make fun of them calling them "geeks" and "nerds".
The story is very funny because during the story Gary talks about things he and Harold have done in the past. Gary is the one telling the story because Harold is the one who is always coming up with ideas for new ways to make money. Harold decided one day that they needed a car. It didn't matter that they weren't old enough to drive. Harold discovered a way for them to make a lot of money at a golf course, which they later used the money to buy the perfect car for a fourteen year old. All through the story Harold helps Gary with bullies and school by playing tricks on the bullies. Gary looks up to Harold because he is smarter than Gary. Gary comments, "Harold is good at everything, except fishing." Harold would try anything he had never tried before, but he would visit the library first. He had never tried fishing and decided he wanted to. He figured that Gary could teach him. Harold came equipped for a major fishing tournament; Gary came with string, hook and worms. This turned into a learning experience; Harold was able to hook everything, except a fish.
I would recommend this book to 6th and 7th graders because it is more at their reading level. Kids hate reading long books, so they will enjoy this quick paced, funny, short book.
This book showed how two friends could overcome bullying and has fun doing it. I like the way the story is being told in the present and the past. This book helps teenagers to relate with the characters. The things that Harold and Gary had to deal with are what so many kids these days deal with. This story shows kids that, you have to keep your head up and not give into peer pressure. Don't let anyone bully you, but most of all don't be a bully to anyone else. Most of all, that a true friend is a good friend.

The book, "The Schernoff Discoveries" by Gary Paulsen was very funny! It tells of Harold, a 14-year-old genius and social outcast, and his friend. Harold has an answer to every problem, from dating, to sports like skiing and fishing, to dealing with school bullies or making money. Simple Story of Friendship
By A. Luciano
Harold Schernoff is a fourteen-year-old genius and outcast. He only has one friend, the narrator of this book and fellow outcast. Together these two teenagers investigate the world around them. Harold tries his hand at electricity and nearly electrocutes himself. The two boys set pins at a bowling alley, retrieve golf balls for money and try to learn to ski--most adventures leading to some sort of disaster.

The most important things in the lives of these two teens, though, are avoiding the bullies that plague their lives and trying to get close to the girls in their class who never seem to want to talk to them.

This is an entertaining story of being young and awkward, and of a tight friendship that helps to make the lives of these two teenagers more bearable.

I liked the lighthearted nature of this book. Everything was presented in a way that made it amusing rather than sad, as it could have been. I also liked that in some ways Harold and the narrator were able to get their revenge and to eventually get close to the girls they liked.

However, this book was pretty simplistic and seems to have been written for an audience much younger than the ages of the main characters. I don't think it would keep the attention of a middle-schooler.
