From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-This 15th addition to the series will not disappoint fans. Nate is awakened by a phone call in the middle of the night. His friend Rosamond needs his help-her cat's pillowcase has disappeared, and the feline, Big Hex, is pacing and keeping her awake. So that all concerned may get some sleep, the young detective sets out to solve the case. This is another well-told, humorous mystery that young readers will be able to solve if they zero in on Sharmat's clues. Simont's lively, realistic watercolors correlate with the action in the text. A satisfying, easy-reader mystery.

From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. The intrepid detective returns for his fifteenth case in this beginning chapter book. Bed linen has gone astray. Nate's friend Rosamond will not be able to sleep until her cat's "slashed and shredded, shrunken and shriveled" pillowcase is recovered. Neither, apparently, will anyone else. Leaving a note for his mother, Nate follows a trail of clues through the dead of night, questioning suspects, interviewing the owner of Uncle Ned's Day and Night Diner, eliminating a red herring, and finally unraveling the mystery. The crisp, clipped narrative is both a clever parody of the hard-boiled detective story genre and a boon to beginning readers. Simont's line-and-watercolor illustrations harmonize perfectly with the tale's understated humor. The necessary clues are in place, and young sleuths can race Nate and his sidekick dog, Sludge, to the mystery's solution. Elizabeth Bush

From Kirkus Reviews
In another likable mystery for readers making the transition from easy readers, Nate and his dog go on an urgent middle-of- the-night quest for a missing pillowcase that his friend Rosamond's cat is especially attached to. Pondering clues, Nate stumbles in deerstalker, pj's, and rapidly deteriorating slippers from his house to Rosamond's to another friend's to an all-night diner--all affectionately recorded in Simont's sure, broad strokes and colors only slightly muted by the unseemly hour. It's all satisfyingly resolved when Nate remembers something that the reader also probably missed at first. A welcome addition to a reliable series. Nate the Great and the Pillowcase
By Janice Chu
This is one of the fine stories in the Nate the Great series. Clues start to build up as you read further into the story. Readers are prompted to solve Nate's case. Written in very simple English, it is a good reader for my nine-year old son, who is learning English as a second language. I have had difficulties in finding reading materials that do not only suit his interest but also his English language level. Nate the Great stories have given me lots of help.

A Must For Early Readers
By Amazon Customer
Finding chapter books for young readers ( 4-6 years ) that they are able to read themselves with ease are very hard to find. I am an owner, director, and master elementary teacher of a small private school. I spend many hours looking for books that do not use put-downs, rude retorts, words like "stupid/idiot/baby", cliques and competition in a negative way, as part of the story line. Books of this type are very hard to find, and ones that will hold a child's interest are even harder to find. The "Nate the Great" series meets my qualifications, enough so that I am buying the series for my young grandson for Christmas.

From Publishers Weekly
Grisham continues to impress with his daring, venturing out of legal thrillers entirely for A Painted House and Skipping Christmas (the re-release of which this past fall was itself a bold move) and, within the genre, working major variations. Here's his most unusual legal thriller yet--a story whose hero and villain are the same, a young man with the tragic flaw of greed; a story whose suspense arises not from physical threat but moral turmoil, and one that launches a devastating assault on a group of the author's colleagues within the law. Mass tort lawyers are Grisham's target, the men (they're all men here, at least) who win billion-dollar class-action settlements from corporations selling bad products, then rake fantastic fees off the top, with far smaller payouts going to the people harmed by the products. Clay Carter is a burning-out lawyer at the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) in Washington, D.C., when he catches the case of a teen who, for no apparent reason, has gunned down an acquaintance. Clay is approached by a mysterious stranger, the enigmatic Max Pace, who says he represents a megacorporation whose bad drug caused the teen--and others--to kill. The corporation will pay Clay $10 million to settle with all the murder victims at $5 million per, if all is accomplished on the hush-hush; that way, the corporation avoids trial and possibly much higher jury awards. After briefly examining his conscience, Clay bites. He quits the OPD, sets up his own firm and settles the cases. In reward, Pace gives him a present--a mass tort case based on stolen evidence but worth tens of millions in fees. Clay lunges again, eventually winning over a hundred million in fees. He is crowned by the press the new King of Torts, with enough money to hobnob with the other, venal-hearted tort royalty, to buy a Porsche, a Georgetown townhouse and a private jet, but not enough to forget his heartache over the woman he loves, who dumped him as a loser right before his career took off. Clay's financial/legal hubris knows few bounds, and soon he's overextended, his future hanging on the results of one product liability trial. The tension is considerable throughout, and readers will like the gentle ending, but Grisham's aim here clearly is to educate as he entertains. He can be didactic (" `Nobody earns ten million dollars in six months, Clay,' " a friend warns. " `You might win it, steal it, or have it drop out of the sky, but nobody earns money like that. It's ridiculous and obscene' "), but readers will applaud Grisham's fierce moral stance (while perhaps wondering what sort of advance he got for this book) as they cling to his words every step along the way of this powerful and gripping morality tale.

Great legal thriller
By jb4wiganfc
John Grisham is a master at the legal thriller. They can have a tendency to sound the same if you run through several of the books one after another because of the similar themes of law and things but they certainly have a fast flowing and dynamic pace.
Grisham can draw the reader into the lives of his characters and have them rooting for a protagonist in a hurry.
His strength in drawing in the reader is very rare and makes him at the top of the game.
The King of Torts makes you root for a young lawyer who much like Icarus flies too close to the sun and is burned but manages to survive.

Do you think Grisham is an advocate of tort reform???
By L. Quido
National news coverage of the doctors' campaign against tort reform is just beginning. Grisham shows a side of the tort battle where attorneys wage war against pharmaceutical companies. Since neither (attorneys or pharmaceutical companies) can escape public scorn, it feels a little like the bad guys fighting the bad guys. So, it's a stretch to determine who you want to win!

Grisham has an anti-hero, Clay Carver, in the role of legal eagle this time. We're supposed to believe that he's spent the better part of the last 4 years as a public defender, and in a relationship with a wealthy young woman whose parents are social climbers. You really can't get any passion out of his role in the Public Defender's office, nor out of his relationship. All this changes when he is offered the money of a lifetime ($15 million) to quietly settle as yet unknown claims of those who have suffered due to a risky drug. The offer comes from Max Pace - a shady character who plays "fireman" for a drug company and has access to all sorts of information unknown to the public. Shades of "The Firm"!

Given that Clay realizes very early on the problems associated with this much money, and sees a demonstration of how successful tort lawyers spend and spend and never achieve what they seek in life, you would think he would not fall into that trap. But Grisham pushes him in with his eyes closed - even having him buy a Caribbean villa for his expensive mistress (with whom he has nothing in common) and a jet plane.

Clay's friends from the OPD that join him in the new work do what we expect HIM to do -- take the early money and run. But he justs keeps his head in the sand and continues to burrow in, deeper and deeper.

Thankfully, as in most Grisham novels, this does not go on for very long, as the book is brief, and the ending is predictable.

I gave the book three stars, which is a star generous, because it held my interest, despite lack of plot and characterization. Grisham's ploy of using fiction to make a political statement about issues affecting the legal profession is always entertaining.

But if I were you, I'd wait for the paperback!

A fast paced, heart pounding read, but...
By Kevin C. Kropf
Not since The Firm had I torn through a Grisham book like I did with KOT and yet I finished feeling unsatisfied. There is no doubt that J.G. is the King of page turning action; however, one small plot twist at the end does not keep this book from being predictable.
Would I have been excited about King of Torts as I was about The Firm, Pelican Brief or A Time to Kill if I had read this first, I think I would have. We have been spoiled by the freshness of his earlier books and let's be honest, his latest works have been of the same quality yet are no longer fresh. It's tough for Grisham to surprise us anymore because of the number of books he has written and how he has trained his readers to truly expect the "unbelievable," the "unexpected," and the customary trip to the Caribbean-do you think he has to travel there for background information all the time, must be nice!
Is it just me or is Grisham just a little more didactic in this tome than in his previous works? I think he did an excellent job with the main character and you could see the greed and ethical conflict boiling below the surface (like father, like son) as J. Clay Carter II decided to plunge into the depths of mass tort law. Grisham does paint a vivid picture of the slide from "doing good" to "doing well" and character development has always been this author's strength.
In the end, this book is worth 4 or 5 hours of your time and even though you know where the book is going, you don't mind it when you know it is Grisham taking you there.

Powerful. Sensual. Seductive. He is all that is shamelessly erotic in a man. In her sexiest Highlander novel yet, New York Times bestselling author Karen Moning stirs up a sizzling brew of ancient mystery and modern passion as she brings together a devilishly handsome Celtic warrior trapped in time . . . and the woman who’s about to pay the ultimate price for freeing him. Age-old secrets haunt them. Deadly danger and irresistible desire shadow their every move. It’s a relationship for the ages. And all that separates them is a mere thirteen hundred years. . . .

Jessi St. James has got to get a life. Too many hours studying ancient artifacts has given the hardworking archaeology student a bad case of sex on the brain. So she figures she must be dreaming when she spies a gorgeous half-naked man staring out at her from inside the silvery glass of an ancient mirror. But when a split-second decision saves her from a terrifying attempt on her life, Jessi suddenly finds herself confronting six and a half feet of smoldering, insatiable alpha male.

Heir to the arcane magic of his Druid ancestors, eleven centuries ago Cian MacKeltar was trapped inside the Dark Glass, one of four coveted Unseelie Hallows, objects of unspeakable power. When the Dark Glass is stolen, an ancient enemy will stop at nothing to reclaim it, destroying everything in his path–including the one woman who may just hold the key to breaking the ninth-century Highlander’s dark spell. For Jessi, the muscle-bound sex god in the mirror is not only tantalizingly real, he’s offering his protection–from exactly what, Jessi doesn’t know. And all he wants in exchange is the exquisite pleasure of sharing her bed.

Yet even as Cian’s insatiable hunger begins to work its dark magic on Jessi, his ancient enemy is about to obtain the final and most dangerous of the Unseelie Hallows–and the ninth-century Highlander must stop him from getting it. Nothing less than the very fabric of the universe and two passionately entwined lives are at stake–as Cian and Jessi fight to claim the kind of love that comes along but once in an ice age. . . .

I absolutely love Karen's Highlander series and couldn't possibly say enough about them. I am a bit of a romance snob and expect the books I read to be accurate given the circumstances of the story, have believable heroes and heroines that can act on their own and hold their own. The prose should grab and hold my attention, no matter how many times I read it. I do not want to feel the need correct grammar as I'm reading, I don't want to roll my eyes at a stupid move or moment that just doesn't belong - I have to be totally immersed in the story. Karen Marie Moning does that in Spades! She's one of my favorite authors; in league with JR Ward (gotta love the BDB) and Coreen Callahan (her air battles are epic)Julie Garwood (love her heroines) Julia Quinn and Georgette Heyer - and absolute Queen! Get them all, read them all and keep a napkin handy to catch the drool!

Excellent Series!
By Pam
I read each and every book from this series in order and nonstop. OMG...What an amazing experience Granted there were some characters that I loved thoughout the series. One of the things that most impressed me is we really get to see the happily ever after throughout the series.

If you have the money and can afford to buy the whole set, that is the experience that you are shooting for from this author. Chapman is creative funny, and sincere with these characters and you feel the love between main players as well as the family they have around them. After all those books I was still left wanting more.

I passed my set to my sister. She calls me at the end of each one to discuss the new characters, the new dynamic they'll create in future novels in the series.

Truly a fun read. The best read since my first historical romance (Knight in Shining Armor).

  • Great book!

From Publishers Weekly
Slaughter thrusts her series heroine, Dr. Sara Linton, into a serial killer case being investigated by the author's newer series protagonists, detectives Will Trent and Faith Mitchell of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Natalie Ross provides just the right vocal interpretations. For Faith, a tough cookie starting to crumble from the combined pressures of pregnancy and newly diagnosed diabetes, she shifts from harsh-voiced confrontations with balky suspects to softer, self-doubting inner monologues. Trent is given a thoughtful delivery that changes to a self-conscious croak in the presence of the lovely Dr. Linton. For the doctor, still mourning the death of her husband, Ross saves her most subtle characterization, bravery undercut by an unshakable sadness. Though very much a character-driven novel, there's no shortage of plot, and there, too, Ross handles the chills and thrills with appropriate pacing and drama. A Delacorte hardcover (Reviews, June 1). Sara Linton is back!
By Trouble
The last novel Sara was in Beyond Reach should have been called Shattered for what it did to the readers-- very few novels have that shocking of an ending. We now know what the writer is capable of -- it was merciful of her not to bring Sara back in the last book. I only opened her last book Fractured reluctantly. A year was not enough to get over it. Apparently Karin Slaughter had not gotten over it yet either, because she sauntered off to a different area of Georgia to reprise the deeply flawed characters of Will Trent and Faith Mitchell from Triptych.

This book, Undone, brings all of these characters together in Atlanta.

Will and Faith are locked in a stormy partnership, part-friendship, part-bickering sibling style. They come to police work from wildly divergent backgrounds, Will after being raised in the orphanage in Georgia, Faith after struggling most of her life after having given birth to a child at the age of 15. Will struggles with dyslexia that makes it virtually impossible for him to read without the aids he has built into his life. Faith works on coming to terms with two heath issues that present themselves immediately in this book: diabetes and pregnancy, which bring her right into Sara's new world, the ER in Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Sara left Grant County when she discovered that she could no longer survive in the places where Jeffrey had ever been.

Karin Slaughter is a master of characterization. This is a description of Will and Faith's boss, Amanda Wagner: "She favored monochromatic power suits with skirts that hit below her knee and stockings that showed off the definition of what Will had to admit were remarkably good calves for a woman he often thought of as the Antichrist."

This book is a thriller to its very core. Karin Slaughter is a master of this genre and brings to her books a gritty realism that is brilliant and earth-shattering.

Amazing, Recommended
By Rebecca Calderhead
I am not the type to typically write reviews, but this book was so amazing that I decided I had to write something.

I started this book off after reading a new series of books that had nothing to do with mysteries or crime solving, I was taking a break from this type of book for awhile after finding myself growing tired of them. I decided to read this book after a long wait, because I really was curious to what would happen to Sara.

I was worried I couldn't get into the book, because of growing tired of this genre, but I found myself unable to put the book down after I purchased the book and finished it within days of buying it.

I have read all the Grant County and Will Trent books and I have been looking for to this one for a long time after the big surprise at the end of the last Grant County book.

When I first read she was combining the two series, I have to say I was surprised and not exactly excited with the decision. I didn't think the outcome would be lived up to either series on it's own, but I was actually surprised how it turned out and I found myself enjoying the book more than some of the others in the earlier Grant County series.

I thought Karin Slaughter did a great job of mixing the characters together in a believable fashion and I really felt connected to each one of them.

I do agree that Sara didn't get as many pages in the book as I would have liked her to have, but I don't think that made or broke the book. I keep thinking over and over how she could have gotten more pages and with what happened to her at the end of the last book, I really don't see a way she could have.

I feel Will and Faith brought enlightenment to Sara and hopefully that enlightenment will help her get back to her old life and make her a bigger part of the next book.

As for this book though, I thought Karin Slaughter did a good job of mixing the characters together, it's not always about who gets the biggest part in the book but the ones you found yourself loving and wanting to read more about and I found myself connected the most to Sara.

The mystery or crime in the book that needed to be solved was graphic, but not to graphic and had your heart aching for the victims. I don't want to put any spoilers here, but no matter how the victims acted, you still found yourself mourning for them.

As always the bad guy in the book was someone I didn't expect, yet right there in front of your eyes from the beginning.

I would definitely recommend this book if you have read any of the other books, I have to say I was very surprised by the ending once again like I was with the last book in the Grant County series.

I found myself almost unable to finish the book with the big twist at the end. I will admit I almost cried and any book that brings out such emotion in someone deserves 5 stars.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

A mixed blessing ... 3 ½ stars
By Brian Baker
Like many other readers, I was very surprised by the ending of Slaughter's Grant County novel a couple of books back in which a series lead character - Jeffrey Tolliver - was killed, leaving his counterpart Sara Linton a grieving widow.

Well, Sara's back in this novel, along with Slaughter's other parallel series duo from the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) Will Trent and Faith Mitchell.

I have very mixed feelings about this book, to be honest. I think Slaughter's a tremendously talented writer; I also think it was a very gutsy move in the earlier book to kill off Jeffrey. She probably knew this wouldn't sit well with many of her fans, and judging by that book's review on this site, she was right. But she did it anyway.

I think that's also a very artistic choice, because now we'll never know if a lead character's safe in any book she writes going forward, and that certainly adds dramatic tension to the story. A lead character can actually die... think about that! You KNOW when you read a book featuring Mitch Rapp, Jack Reacher, Lucas Davenport, Harry Bosch, or any of the others that no matter HOW bad the situation is in which they find themselves, they're ultimately going to emerge from the other end alive.

You can't say that any longer about a Slaughter character, can you?

Also on the upside, the plot of this book was very clever and cunningly executed; I was surprised at the denouement. The clues were there, but even though I'm a devotee of this genre, I hadn't figured it out.

However, I do have some nits to pick.

First of all, to set the background, Slaughter writes very strong female characters. Some are appealing, some not. That's fine; no problem. In the Tolliver/Linton series, Sara's appealing, Lena's a pain in the tukus (though I happen to like her). In the GBI series, Faith, Angie and GBI honcho Amanda are all also tough as nails. Actually, I think this gives one some insight into Slaughter's own personality, interestingly enough. Faith and Amanda are both very appealing in their own ways, while Angie's a demon in a dress.

In the Tolliver/Linton series, Jeffrey kept Lena on a strong and short leash, which made for a very interesting dynamic. But in the GBI series, Will Trent is completely p-whipped by Angie. Now, that works for a while, but here's where the problem arises for me.

Trent is already a case of "damaged goods", being dyslexic and emotionally stunted due to his background as an orphanage veteran. To be honest, I have a hard time believing he's as disabled as he is and yet still managed to go through training to become a peace officer - with firearms privileges at that - or even have passed a driving license test. If you can't read, how do you pass the written test for a license?

But even putting that aside, we've now seen him in three books, and his obsession with Evil Angie is starting to become tiresome, to be honest... particularly as it was used in a pretty manipulative and unbelievable fashion to delay the revelation of a vital clue in this story. She's a cop, and would endanger a potential victim just to play mind games with him? And even after that, he wouldn't boot her butt out the door for good?

PUH-LEEZE!

This is the same problem I have with the "Beauty Killer" trilogy by Chelsea Cain. Enough with the total wimpdom of the character, with no progress over a series of books covering an appreciable time frame. In order to stay interesting - and believable - characters have to change over time just like real people do. None of us are frozen in amber.

I, for one, am totally done with Trent's being mesmerized by Angie. Time for him to develop as a character, move forward in some way, either admitting his total vulnerability to her and just giving up, or tossing her completely out of his life.

But something has to change. His unbelievable dyslexia coupled with his whippedness just makes him too static and boring a character to continue unchanged.

Enchanted by a powerful spell, Highland laird Drustan MacKeltar slumbered for nearly five centuries hidden deep in a cave, until an unlikely savior awakened him. The enticing lass who dressed and spoke like no woman he’d ever known was from his distant future, where crumbled ruins were all that remained of his vanished world. A woman changed forever in his arms...

Gwen Cassidy had come to Scotland to shake up her humdrum life and, just maybe, meet a man. Or that once he’d kissed her, he wouldn’t let her go?

Bound to Drustan by a passion stronger than time, Gwen is swept back to sixteenth-century Scotland, where a treacherous enemy plots against them ... and where a warrior with the power to change history will defy time itself for the woman he loves....

From Publishers Weekly
Rife with unexpected plot twists, Druid lore and sparkling humor, Moning's latest time-travel romance (following The Highlander's Touch) returns to the Scottish Highlands for another romp between an ancient laird and a modern lass. Gwen Cassidy's hopes of finding a man crumble when she realizes that her much-anticipated tour of Scotland is a senior citizen expedition. Frustrated, Gwen decides to hike the breakneck hills of Loch Ness alone, and she ends up falling down a ravine and awakening Drustan MacKeltar, a Scottish lord who has been slumbering for 500 years under a gypsy's spell. Although Drustan is bewildered by the modern century, he is not puzzled by his feelings for Gwen. Her passionate heart and brilliant mind intrigue him, and he enlists her aid to return to the 16th century. Once back in Drustan's time, their struggle to save his people alters history and results in a surprising denouement. There's much that's fun here, both in characters and situations, but detail-oriented readers may be distracted by the novel's many anachronisms: for example, Gwen has coffee in bed in 1518 even though coffee wasn't available in England until the 17th century. Nevertheless, Moning's snappy prose, quick wit and charismatic characters will enchant. (Sept. 11)Forecast: Morning has just three titles under her belt, but her fan base is growing steadily. This paranormal, time-travel romantic comedy will appeal to Donna Kauffman aficionados as well as readers who enjoy mixed-genre romances.

That's It...I'm Moving To Scotland!!!!
By Kristi Ahlers
Seriously, this was a fast paced sexy, romantic, and funny read. The characters were great, and if I could find a way to time travel back to find a brawny, sexy highlander of my own I'd pack my bags now!!!
Gwen is ready for a change. She's still a virgin, on a tour of Scotland with a group of retired old people, and not a strong handsome "cherry picker" in sight. Ok so she goes on a hike and falls in on one. What she is not aware of is the fact that her highlander has been sleeping for over 500 years and is not prepared for present day anything! But that doesn't stop him from driving Gwen insane with his funny talk, and kissing her senseless!
Drustan MacKeltar has been taking a long rest (500 years worth of long) and is thrilled when he awakens to having a wee lass sitting directly over his groin looking at his sock???? Whatis a sock? Really he has more important things to do like getting back to his own century then kissing his wee lass senseless, or trying to figure out what she is saying. She certainly is not speaking any English that he's ever heard!
Together they get Drustan back to his home or where his home should be only to find out it didn't survive, and now they have to go back in time. Problem is Gwen still thinks her cherry picker is insane (time travel... oh yeah, right all the time!)so she dumbfounded when she arrives naked, no longer a virgin (I'm not going to give that part away) and wet in Scotland 500 years earlier. Problem is the new Drustan does not know who Gwen is and has serious doubts about her sanity. One thing he can't get over is how much he wants to kiss her!
Of course there is more to the book then this. I've just given you a small taste. Trust me you won't be able to put this one down. Laughs aplenty and steamy hot chemistry and romance. Ms. Moning has become an author I'll pick up simply because her name is on the book!

An Engaging Read
By Shawna Lanne
Karen Marie Moning wrote a great book that is magical, humorous, sensual, and romantic to boot.
"Kiss of the Highlander." Generally I am not a fan of either Time Travel books or of books about the Highlands but I couldn't find anything else that looked interesting and thought `what the hey, I'll take a chance', and I wasn't disappointed.
Gwen Cassidy and Drustan MacKeltar are both engaging and vulnerable without being whiney or arrogant. And Ms. Moning found a great way to inject tension into the plot, the whole time travel -- do we believe each other thing -- without having to make either of her main characters behave as jerks. When one or the other is suspicious of the other character it is for good reason rather than some terminal character flaw like extreme jealousy, insecurity or just plain stupidity.
It was a great book that I devoured in one sitting and I look forward to reading all of her "Highland" books in the near future.

Wow! Yikes! and Hubba Hubba!
By K. Smiley
This is a not-to-be-missed book by Karen Moning who has, in the past, written time travel books that just don't have the sparkle of Kiss of the Highlander. In fact, I almost passed this one by based on the three previous books of hers I read. This is the 21st Century's answer to A Knight in Shining Armor and will satisfy all of us who have longed for a time travel story to match KISA. Both Gwen and Druston are strong as leading characters. Neither overwhelms the other, though Druston tries to overwhelm Gwen on practically every page and their dialogue simply sparkles. There's enough humor and heartache to satisfy every reader. The setting is very romantic and the time travel and "magical/mystical" elements adds to the intensity of the love story. The ending was surprising as I was expecting an ending similar to a Knight in Shining Armor; this was so much better! If I could think of one negative thing to say about this book, I would. But I just can't!

Plot Spins and Spins Taking You on the Ultimate Adventure
By James N Simpson
Myron Bolitar, MB Sports Rep returns for another fast paced can't put down adventure with so many twists in the ending you feel like you're in a backspin. This time round Myron's at the US Open golf tournament. Not a huge fan of golf he doesn't really want to be there but Win tells him it is an excellent opportunity for clients. Turns out Win's right, but for personal reasons Win doesn't want Myron to accept this case. Myron can't say no though, so he's on the case of kidnapped spoilt rich kid Chad Coldren, who is the son of the top female Golf player Linda Coldren and her husband tournament choker Jack Coldren who is leading the US Open for the first time in 30 years.

Of course not everyone likes Myron poking his nose where it does not belong and to Myron's disappointment Win is at the top of that list. Win of course would never harm Myron but others don't share that point of view.

You don't have to be a fan of golf to enjoy this in fact if you don't like Golf Myron's comments along the way are so much funnier. This is one of the best Myron stories, you can read it as a stand alone novel but you'll get a lot more out of this book if you read the prior novels first. Also check out Coben's independent Masterpieces such as Tell No One as well as the rest of Myron's adventures including the next in the series One False Move.

In the city of Atlanta, young women are dying—at the hands of a killer who signs his work with a single, chilling act of mutilation. Leaving behind enough evidence to fuel a frenzied police hunt, this cunning madman is bringing together dozens of lives, crossing the boundaries of wealth and race. And the people who are chasing him must cross those boundaries too. Among them is Michael Ormewood, a veteran detective whose marriage is hanging by a thread—and whose arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. And Angie Polaski, a beautiful vice cop who was once Michael’s lover before she became his enemy.

But another player has entered the game: a loser ex-con who has stumbled upon the killer’s trail in the most coincidental of ways—someone who may be the key to breaking the case wide open….

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Slaughter departs from her Grant County crime series (Faithless, etc.) with a stand-alone thriller notable mainly for a jolting mid-book twist similar to one Ira Levin used with more subtlety in A Kiss Before Dying. The case of a prostitute's brutal murder provides a welcome break for Michael Ormewood, a cynical, world-weary Atlanta cop weighed down by dealing with the city's underclass and the heartbreak of a mentally impaired son. Since the victim's tongue was severed, linking the crime to several other recent outrages, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation intervenes. Suspicions focus on a recently paroled sex offender, John Shelley, who viciously butchered a neighbor more than a decade earlier. Slaughter unexpectedly switches the narrative's perspective, but the shock value garnered by the plot twist isn't matched by the predictable denouement. (Aug.)

From Booklist
In her first stand-alone thriller since she began writing her best-selling Grant County series (the latest is Faithless, 2005), Slaughter continues to obsess over her favorite theme--the close link between intimacy and violence. In this intricately plotted page-turner of a novel, there's a serial killer at work in Atlanta, and he likes his victims young. His telltale m.o.--biting off his victims' tongues--brings in Will Trent, an agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, but the latest vicious murder doesn't fit with the previous cases. For one thing, the victim is a drug-addicted black prostitute in her thirties. Will is assigned to work the case with local detective Michael Ormewood, a hard-to-read veteran who resents Will's presence. Will also calls upon vice-squad undercover agent Angie Polaski, a lifelong friend he first met in an orphanage where they were both placed after suffering severe abuse--their on-again, off-again romantic relationship is a source of comfort and frustration for both of them. Suspicious of authority and severely dyslexic, Will slowly pieces together an investigation that leads to feckless ex-con John Shelley, a man so stunted by his prison stint that he can barely function yet comes roaring back to life when he senses that his newfound freedom is about to be snatched away. Slaughter is keenly interested in the root causes of sexual perversity, and she writes about them so affectingly that her fascinations also become the readers'. Joanne Wilkinson

One of 2006's most remarkable achievements
By David Montgomery
After writing five books in her well-received "Grant County" series, author Karin Slaughter takes a new direction with her novel "Triptych," and it's a remarkable achievement.

An Atlanta police detective is investigating the murder of a prostitute when he discovers that several other women were also killed in a similar fashion. When the detective is joined on the case by an agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the reader gradually begins to learn what's really going on, and the truth is a shocker.

It can be difficult to read a book like this, so bare does it lay the pain of its characters. At the same time, the people in "Triptych" are so real and so well-developed that the reader can't help but feel empathy for them, and thus we are drawn even deeper into the ingenious plot.

This is the best thing Slaughter has written, both shocking and painful, but also gripping and resonant. "Triptych" launches a major new phase in her career, and it's a delight to behold.

Mutilation
By Beverley Strong
Atlanta police detective Michael Ormewood is called to a murder scene at a housing estate to find the body of a drug addict and prostitute, Aleesha Monroe lying in a pool of blood with her tongue bitten out. He is joined in the investigation by Special Agent Will Trent of the Special Apprehension Team, a man with major problems of his own, being severely dyslexic and with an unhealthy attachment to one of the local police force's undercover detectives who operates as a street prostitute to attract and arrest gutter crawlers. This follows a series of mutilations of young girls who are stalked and attacked by a predatory killer. The killer is identified early in the book and what follows is the story of how he is at pains to implicate a relative of his who had been falsely accused of murder as a teenager and who has recently been released after serving a 20 year jail sentence. It's not a pleasant read and I was rather glad to finish it as I felt that I'd been immersed in corruption and the life of psychos and low lifes and was becoming depressed with all of the squalor.

This is one weird book
By Brian Baker
I won't rehash the story line, as you can get that from the publishing reviews.

I became a Slaughter fan with her first novel "Kiss/Cut", and have followed all of her Grant County novels. They're very enjoyable. So I bought this book on the strength of her previous performance. Also, I know a lot of authors write books other than their trademark series, many successfully: Connelly, Burke, Sanford, et al.

I had a hard time getting through this book. I get her point, and the significance of the title, but it didn't make it any easier. Her characters are beyond complex, especially in the first half of the book; they're obtuse. Further, they're not really likeable, and that's hugely problematical, at least for me. For me to find a novel engaging, there has to be at least one truly sympathetic character on which to hook your anchor. I'm afraid there were none home here.

That problem also made it harder for me to keep track of what was going on as far as plot development. This book took much longer to get through than is typical for me, because I'd lose interest and have to almost force myself to continue. Not really a good sign, that.

Oh, well, I guess it's an interesting experiment for Slaughter, one that unfortunately went awry.

Two stars.
