And yet, there is still that emotional surge that comes with watching our guy cut a swathe through the opposition. We’d just like to see him challenged a little bit more. This is a very enjoyable, vintage Reacher adventure. It starts well, slows a bit in the middle, but then picks up with a high body count towards the end. The plot is pleasingly complex and all the strands are sewn up neatly and logically by the end.

It kicks off shortly after 61 Hours. Yes Reacher is alive, although you won't find out how he survived until about a third of the way through. This is a standalone story rather than a continuation of the plot in the previous book.

Reacher is in rural Nebraska. He's on his way to Virginia and only intends to stop for a night, when he is drawn into what initially looks like a domestic dispute but ends up being something much bigger. The town is under the control of a very unpleasant family called the Duncans, who own a transportation company. The local farmers are dependent on the company and therefore live in fear of them. The Duncans have an important shipment coming in, which has been delayed. This is causing problems for their customer and for the customers of their customer. Consequently a food chain of increasingly nasty villains gets involved, with lots of double crossing and mind games going on. Tied into all this somehow is the mystery of a local girl who disappeared 25 years ago and whose body has never been found.

The setting adds a lot to the tension. Reacher needs to hide in a flat and empty landscape where a man can be seen a mile away, with the locals unwilling to help a stranger.

There is one section in the middle that reminded me of Nothing To Lose, with its endless trudging around small town Colorado in the dark, but this lull was temporary and the momentum picked up quickly again. I also liked the way that Lee Child incorporates Reacher's physical limitations. Reacher is no genius this time around: his deductions are logical and he misses a couple of pretty obvious tricks. All in all, it's another nail biting installment in a terrific series.

Refreshingly Ruthless Jack Reacher - Great Fun!

Great fun!

Not only is this good vintage-style Jack Reacher, it is among the stronger books of this excellent series. The writing is tight, the pacing is excellent, the characters are fleshed out and believable. The cascade of events leading to the inevitable transition to violence happens in a measured, gripping, and believable fashion.

Some of Lee Child's books stand out more than others. This is true for any prolific writer. "Worth dying For" is among the best of the Jack Reacher novels. Familiar readers will likely recapture the thrill and suspense that drew them into Mr. Child's works in the first place. New ones will be in for a unique treat.

Jack Reacher, as a character, displays refreshing ruthlessness in this book. Mr. Child's uniquely practical lessons in the application of violence are both informative and entertaining.

Finally, the underlying mystery of the situation unfolds in a creeping, and creepy, progression. The clues add up, the circumstances evolve, and readers will likely suspect the truth bit by bit, right alongside the protagonist.

Read this book when you have some time - it is a page turner that will keep you up late.

Definitely worth reading, but not quite worth dying for

I get the feeling like I'm the last person to know; I bought this book still thinking that it would be a shocking resolution to the cliff hanger ending of the previous 61 Hours.

You see I was hooked into the possibilities: could Reacher actually be dead? OK I really doubted it but more likely - would everyone's favourite 00-bearman be crippled with burns? At any rate I thought the pundit prediction that his female counterpart running Reacher's old unit would play the major role of this novel was spot on.

But no. Even just reading the blurb will tell you that Reacher is still functioning. I'm pretty sure Childs plays on our expectations, having Reacher described as "hurting" but at the end of the day he can still kick ass without flinching so one wonders why even bother trying to fool us into thinking Jack Reacher is mortal?

Instead of playing the awesome sequel card, Childs just introduces us to another Jack Reacher adventure - this time versus the Duncans an evil family of hick/pervert/smugglers who control a local farming community with extreme violence and a gang of retired football players (most of whom are named Brett). If that isn't slapstick enough for you, the Duncans answer to a the Italians, who answer to some other bad guys, who answer to some Iranians, who answer to the Saudis - all of whom send a couple of guys to keep an eye on the others, resulting in a small town full of organized criminals who comically murder each other (or get their hearts punched out by Reacher)

While the story is fairly run-of-the-mill for Childs, the prose is solid, and the action is well planned. The drama is somewhat limp as the main characters are nowhere near as memorable as in 61 hours and other Reacher novels, and without attachments the story merely becomes a blow by blow account of Reacher pounding on the baddies, and dressing down the cowering townsfolk.

Still, Child leads the field in thriller writing, and Worth Dying For is a prime example of his brillance, I think as an author not living up to your own works is forgivable when all your works are leagues ahead of everything else in the genre.

I'd give it five hundred stars if that was an option

I first discovered this book on my parent's bookshelf when i was six or seven years old. Bored with sesame street picture books, i read it. I felt rather violated by it at first because many of the poems were impossible for me to comprehend and seemed rather nonsensical to me at the time. Yet I was intrigued. This untraditional book challenged me in a way no robert frost or ogden nash book ever did. Convinced that there was some deeper meaning that I wasn't picking up on, I read the book many times over . The more I read these poems the more i understood them and they began to take on definite shape and character. They began to make A LOT of sense. This book may be a difficult read for a seven year old, but i grew to love it then and i havent stopped loving it since. Now ten years later, at seventeen, let me tell you this is a phenomonal book. I've read a lot of books over the past decade but none of them compare to this one. These poems are so beautiful, so unique, so powerful that they will haunt you for an entire lifetime...Richard brautigan was a genius.

Richard Brautigan Makes Love to Words

I found this book on my father's shelf when I was about thirteen and just beginning to be interested in poetry. Opening it at random, the first three poems I flipped to still sum up today the way I feel about Brautigan: the imagery of "Late Starting Dawn" made me fall in love with poetry, the ideology of "Shellfish" made me fall in love with creation, and the verbiage of "It Was Your Idea to Go to Bed with Her" made me fall in love with the English language. Though his poetry is simply constructed, that simplicity is the perfect format for his beautiful understanding of and attraction to words. Richard Brautigan puts human life, from the intellectual pursuits to sexual endeavors, into such physical proximity with the reader that one is left with the feeling of looking someone in the eyes and understanding them for the first time. His passion for the aesthetics of words and life is astoundingly apparent. These poems will make you want to live your life beautifully, and help you see that you already do.

Do you think of me as often as I think of you?

The photo on the cover would be worth the price of the book even if the poems were awful, and they're not. In fact, they're great. Light, withought being trivial, this one's a quick read that stays on. Brautigan's uniqe humor is pervasive and nothing is quite as simple as it might seem at first glance. Warning: Don't think about them too much. These are not grab on and chew kinds of poem-lettes. They're funny ineffable little beasts. I especially like Donner Party and Clad in Garments Like a Silver Disease. A great book just to have knocking about the house. Rock on Brautigan!

Wonderful collection. . . .

Thomas Bulfinch taught at Harvard College in the mid-1800s. He saw a need to collect myths and legends of the classical and later world, as these were important parts of the Western culture. Three books ensued: "The Age of Fable," "The Age of Chivalry," and "Legends of Charlemagne." Edmund Fuller is the editor of this volume.

First, there are nice introductions to each of the three component works. These provide useful context for what follows.

"The Age of Fable" includes some well known episodes, such as Prometheus and Pandora, Midas, Monsters (e.g., Giants, Sphinx, Griffin), the Golden Fleece, adventures of Hercules, and so on. "The Age of Chivalry" focuses upon the legends of King Arthur. Here, we see segments on Sir Gawain, Launcelot of the Lake, Tristram and Isoude, Perceval, and the death of King Arthur. The final work addresses legends of Charlemagne. The tale of "The Battle of Roncesvalles" and the heroism of Orlando is well told.

All in all, a nice version of this collection of works by Bulfinch.

Why does Hamilton Have the Hold on the Mythology Market? (A Teacher's Opinion)

It's astonishing that Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY outsells this book on a regular basis. I think most educators just look at the publication date. Since Hamilton's book was published in the 1940s and Bullfinch published in the 1800s, they think Hamilton's book must be much easier to read: not so.

While Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY is confusing, redundant, and just plain inadequate in spots, Bullfinch's MYTHOLOGY provides clear and often exciting renditions of the much-loved myths. While Hamilton summarizes, Bullfinch is an excellent storyteller, who pulls you into the story in the same way that the original authors did. Even though Hamilton wrote sixty years or so after Bullfinch, her diction is much more confusing than his. For educational purposes, I heartily suggest giving Bullfinch's MYTHOLOGY a try.

The only gripe I have with the text is that it uses the Latin names for the gods only. Modern mythology has seen a return to the original Greek names. This can easily be overcome though.

Great Story From Broken Lives to Mended Lives

I enjoyed reading about three men whose lives are torn apart and how they come together to build new lives. Having three different stories meld into one gave the book a great deal of variety, and made it more interesting than stories with just one person's struggle to regain a place in society. And a mix of young people with older main characters adds added interest. All in all, it was an excellent account of broken lives being repaired.

Good old classic, favorite of mine "Heidi Grows Up"

I am 65 and still have "Heidi" book from when I was eight years old. I decided I wanted to read "Heidi Grows Up" and Heidi's Children so reserved them at the library. When they didn't come in after a year I decided to buy them online. I was thrilled to get them and read them again and am now sharing them with some young friends
So very happy I was able to find them.............and they arrived promptly and in old but "good enough condition" to enjoy

Heidi Grows Up

A nearly seamless blend of voices as Tritten continues Spyri's story of "Heidi".
I inherited the last Tritten Heidi story, "Heidi's Children", but remarkably, these stories of a young adult Heidi are available at my library only as reference items.

Well written book for youth, descriptive, believable story lines with challenges for each character.

Good lessons in culture, power of education, relationships, relative poverty and wealth in a community, and reliance on God. Additional insights on the natural beauty found in different regions, ie Lake Geneva vs The Alps.

About the Author
David Gibbins has worked in underwater archaeology all his professional life. After earning a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, he taught archaeology in Britain and abroad, and is a world authority on ancient shipwrecks and sunken cities. He has led numerous expeditions to investigate underwater sites in the Mediterranean and around the world. chapter one

southeastern black sea, present day

Jack, you’re not going to believe what I’ve just found. It’s gold. Solid gold.”

Jack Howard twisted around and stared at the orange glow of the headlamp from the other diver below him, the form almost completely obscured by the swirling black cloud of sediment that filled the tunnel. He dumped air from his buoyancy compensator and dropped down, flexing his knees to prevent his fins from scraping the jagged lava wall, then angled sideways to avoid becoming entangled in the cable that snaked up to the submersible on the seafloor above them. He injected a blast of air into his suit to reacquire neutral buoyancy, catching a glimpse of Costas’s face through his visor as he finned sideways to let Jack take his place. Costas was staring intently at the tunnel wall in front of him, aiming his headlamp at one spot. Jack followed his gaze, edging forward, keeping his breathing shallow to maintain his depth in the water, staring into the swirl of sediment. Slowly the particles settled, and he began to make out the wall beyond. He could see the twisted black lava from the eruption five years ago, its friable surface broken and exposed by the boring drill that had dug through the solidified flow the day before to create the tunnel. But then he saw something different, embedded in the lava, a smooth rock surface cracked and mottled by the searing heat of the eruption. He peered at the polished surface, his heart suddenly pounding with excitement. There was no doubt about it. He was looking at a pillar, on some kind of plinth. A pillar carved by human hands.

“Yes.” He punched his fist in the water, then turned to Costas, speaking into his intercom. “I’d begun to wonder whether this place really existed at all, or if it was just a figment of our imagination.” He turned back to the pillar, seeing where the plinth had been carved out of the natural tufa. He had a flashback to the moment he and Costas had first seen archaeological remains at this site five years ago from the Aquapod submersibles, watching in awe as the veils of silt dropped and the walls and roofs of the ancient city appeared, the most exhilarating moment to date in his career as an underwater archaeologist. Revisiting scenes of past triumph was sometimes a strange experience, recalling emotions and high drama long gone, but this time it was different, like entering a completely new world. The volcanic eruption that had engulfed the site and forced them to leave five years ago had created a totally unfamiliar environment, a seascape as barren and devoid of life as the surface of the moon. He turned to Costas. “This is the first proof we’ve had it was all real. You’re right. It’s archaeological gold.”

Costas tapped his shoulder, and aimed his headlamp midway up the wall above the plinth. “Jack, I meant real gold. Have another look.”

Jack followed Costas’s beam and took a deep breath, holding it for a moment to rise a foot and a half in the water. The beam lit up a final swirl of volcanic particles that obscured the pillar, and Jack put out his hand and wafted them away. He let his hand drop, and then gasped in amazement. “Well, I’ll be damned,” he whispered.

“See what I mean?”

Jack stared, wondering whether his imagination was playing tricks on him. The object in front of him was remarkably similar to one they had found five years ago, the object that had first led them to this place. He saw the reflected shimmer of gold on the inside of his visor, and he closed his eyes for a moment, half expecting it to be a phantasm, to be gone when he opened them. But it was still there, a golden disk about a hand’s breadth across embedded in the pillar, the sheen of gold almost blinding him in the reflected glare of the headlamp. He reached out and carefully pressed the fingers of his glove against it, feeling the solidity. It was real. He felt the adrenaline course through him, and turned and grinned at Costas. “Now I really believe it.”

“That’s the Atlantis symbol, isn’t it?”

Atlantis. It was the first time either of them had uttered the word since leaving Seaquest II in the submersible two hours before, as if to say it aloud would risk the site closing up on them again. Jack searched with his eyes, seeing nothing but the golden reflection. “Where are you looking?”

Costas turned his head to move his beam away. “Use your headlamp, angled down, low beam. You should get more shadow.”

Jack reached up to his helmet and activated the twin halogen lamps on either side, then ramped them down. Suddenly a symbol appeared on the disk, its lines deeply impressed into the gold. He stared in astonishment, his mind racing back to the extraordinary events of five years ago, to the excavation of a Bronze Age wreck in the Aegean Sea at the start of their quest. They had found a golden disk impressed with this symbol, alongside other symbols Jack had recognized from an ancient pottery disk found a century before at the Minoan site of Phaistos in Crete. The Phaistos symbols had baffled archaeologists for generations, but the disk from the wreck contained parallel symbols in the Minoan Linear script, an early form of Greek, which allowed the Phaistos symbols to be translated.

What they had revealed was astounding, the greatest revelation from an ancient text in the history of archaeology. One word had stood out, a word that had bedeviled archaeologists since time immemorial, a word spelled out in the syllabic script of the Minoans and represented by the symbol in front of Jack now: Atlantis. That had been remarkable enough, but then his colleague Maurice Hiebermeyer had made another discovery deep in the Egyptian desert, a fragment of papyrus showing that the story of Atlantis told by the Greek philosopher Plato had not been a myth but was based on hard reality, on an account given to a Greek traveler by an Egyptian priest who had inherited secret knowledge stretching back thousands of years before the first pharaohs. Together the papyrus and the disk contained clues that had brought Jack and his team to the southeastern corner of the Black Sea, searching a shoreline submerged when the Mediterranean had cascaded over a land bridge at the present-­day Bosporus and filled the Black Sea basin, the last and most catastrophic event in the sea-­level rise caused by the great melt at the end of the Ice Age twelve thousand years ago. For Jack, it had been the perfect archaeological quest, a marriage of textual clues, hard science, and intuition, and it had brought together all the skills of his team. They had revealed nothing short of the most dramatic archaeological site ever discovered, surrounding the twin peaks of a partly submerged volcano. It had been a spectacular vision of human ingenuity and achievement at the beginning of the Neolithic period, when people had built monuments that equaled those of the Egyptians and the Sumerians and the Mesoamericans thousands of years later.

Jack traced his glove over the symbol on the disk, up the central axis to where two symmetrical patterns extended outward like garden rakes, each terminating in a series of parallel lines. The text on the Phaistos disk had instructed them to follow the shape of the eagle with outstretched wings, and they had realized that the symbol was also a map, a plan of the submerged tunnels and chambers they had discovered under the peak of the volcano. Five years ago they had passed through extraordinary wonders: a huge chamber full of ancient cave paintings of the Ice Age, then a tunnel with carvings showing latter-­day priests of Atlantis with conical hats, and then the holy of holies, the place where the tunnel ahead of them now might be leading. Yet that chamber with its huge statue of a mother goddess had been freshly carved shortly before the flood, and Jack was convinced that somewhere inside the tunnels and chambers lay other secrets, something that would link the holy of holies and the priests with those ancestral images from the Ice Age: perhaps an inner sanctum that would reveal how the belief system of the Ice Age hunter-­gatherers had transformed into a religion of priests and gods and worship. The most likely location, the complex of tunnels ahead of them now, was a place they had only just begun to explore five years ago when the North Anatolian Fault had shuddered and the volcano surged to life again, forcing them away from the site seemingly forever.

Jack pressed his hand against the surface of the disk, wishing he could remove his glove and feel it against his skin. He had found gold before: gleaming coins of the Roman emperors, dazzling cups and jewelry on the Bronze Age wreck, gold fit for a king. But this disk was extraordinarily old, at least as old as the flooding of Atlantis more than seven thousand years ago. That was three thousand years before the earliest site elsewhere to produce worked gold, at Varna in Bulgaria. The gold in the disk could have come here with the first hunter-­gatherers who had sought shelter in the caves on the slopes of the volcano during the Ice Age, who had painted the rock with images of mammoths and fearsome lions and leopards: a band of humans of precocious intellect and vision who had traveled south from the retreating glaciers with their most precious belongings. Their talent with metals was clear, their ability to collect and work copper and then to make an alloy to produce bronze, thousands of years before bronze technology reemerged and became widespread in the ancient world. They could have brought the gold with them from the nearest rich source, the gold-­bearing streams of the Caucasus Mountains to the east, laying woolly mammoth skins in the water and collecting the precious flecks just as the Greek myths had Jason and the Argonauts do with the Golden Fleece. And they could have smelted and fashioned the gold into a disk bearing their sacred symbol, perhaps at the time they were transforming their world—­moving beyond the natural caves in the volcano by cutting their own passageways and chambers in the rock, then fashioning mud, brick, lime, and volcanic ash into the walls of houses, creating the world’s first civilization.

To Jack, the golden disk represented everything that was fascinating about this place: the symbol of a people on the cusp of the greatest revolution in human history, a symbol that allowed them to look forward to a new world and yet also back to the time of their ancestors. He wanted to feel what they had felt, to see the world as they had seen it, to look far back in prehistory to the time before the memory of the deep past had become clouded by the foundation myths that followed the first cities and the first dynasties; and he wanted to look forward to where these people were going, to understand what motivated them as they poured all their energy into creating this place and then fleeing the oncoming flood. If he could see those things, then he would have found the greatest treasure of this place. He wanted to discover their past. Above all, he wanted to find out about their beliefs, how these people saw their existence at the dawn of modern religion. He wanted to find the gods of Atlantis.

Costas tapped Jack’s helmet. “You happy?”

Jack drew his eyes away from the symbol and looked at Costas, his form now visible as the sediment cleared. Beneath a tattered boilersuit filled with tools, Costas was completely encased in white, like an astronaut. His helmet bore the anchor logo of the International Maritime University, partly obscured by a laser range-­finding device that he had spirited away from the engineering department, one of numerous gadgets that always festooned him when he went diving. Underneath the white outer layer they were both wearing e-­suits, Kevlar-­reinforced dry suits with integrated buoyancy systems, back-­mounted oxygen rebreathers, and dive computers with readouts visible inside their helmets. But the famed environmental resilience of the e-­suit did not extend to diving in near-­boiling water inside an active volcano, so they were entirely encased in thermal protection developed at IMU from the latest NASA and Russian spacesuit technology. Jack had to remind himself that they were not inside some lunar simulator, but under the Black Sea off Turkey, more than a hundred feet below a solidified lava flow and heading for a place that made outer space seem distinctly congenial.

Interesting background material, but

The action is slow-paced as readers join Howard and company following clues. Although some of the historical soliloquies are fascinating, their passiveness slows drags down the plot. Also he spends too much time digressing trying to bring readers up on the background of his previous books in this series and that also substantially slows down the plot. Such that at 132 pages into the book I felt that only a third of the book was about the story and that the other two thirds should have been trimmed off by a good editor. I found myself constantly trying to skip over background material and trying to get back into the plot of the story.

David Gibbins is passionate on his subject and in that he wants to educate as well as entertain is commendable, and that is why I buy his books and enjoyed some of his previous books. On Atlantis God most readers will find that the background material slows down the plot too much.

Excruciatingly Slow Story That Managed A Decent Payoff

Nobody has ever sat this guy down and shown him how to write tight and right. That's pretty obvious when even his character's dialogue is half a page long. This is probably the slowest paced thriller I've ever read, yet there is enough story lurking within the lecturing and endless talking to redeem the end of this trilogy. I read the two previous novels in the series and nothing has changed about my complaints. The author doesn't have a clue about what a fast-paced thriller is. Yet he still tells a decent story if one has the patience to slog through the endless talking and narrative.

A scene starts with promise. Something is going to happen. However, the author has to talk about it forever, first. Then the characters have their turn to talk about it forever, then a little bit of action happens. Then we move on to the next scene and it's the same pattern. For what actually happens in the story, the book could have been about a hundred pages long. I guess it's a good thing Mr. Gibbins bio was limited to the inside cover or it very well could've been twenty pages long!

Despite my obvious distaste for his endless prattling, he at least weaves a decent tale filled with remarkable research and theorizing that has to make one rethink what anyone interested in history has come to refer to as common knowledge of Atlantis. After slogging through this tome, I can almost believe as fact that the real Atlantis was actually in the Black Sea and that the origin of the flood myth came from the creation of that body of water. He certainly makes a good case for it.

His hero Jack Howard is a likeable guy as is his partner Costas. I could have enjoyed following them and their cohorts as they chase down the secrets of Atlantis if it wasn't such a chore to read. I do a lot of reading during commercials and this book, as well as the rest of the series was impossible without a marker because I couldn't get through sometimes a page, let alone two or three without ending up in the middle of a paragraph of dialogue or narrative and losing my place, then having to start over again. It was quite a difficult read. However, I persevered and the payoff was good. At least he writes in solid third person and if he head hops, I didn't notice as I was too busy just trying to get through it all.

If you like excruciating detail in your story, this series and this book is for you. The man sure knows his stuff and presents an interesting theory. As for the pacing and action, well, forget it. Recommended only for those with plenty of time and patience to stick it out.

Waste of Time

I liked the author's Atlantis, but Atlantis God is very slow and very boring. Ye old Nazis are trotted again. Granted, they were evil incarnate, but find another plot device. The rage against the old religion fell flat. Very involved but not worthwhile.

Dylan Hart sat in the deepening gloom of his thirteenth-floor penthouse at 738 Steele Street, his gaze fixed on the large, dark painting hanging high up in the pipes and rafters criss-crossing the vaulted space of his ceiling.

He'd hung it there years ago, all twelve by eight feet of it, so he would never forget the price some men paid. The price they'd all paid. Now he had to wonder for what: freedom? justice?

Maybe.

A few times over the last fourteen years he'd believed in justice, maybe a few more times in freedom, but overall, he'd never been that naive, not even in the beginning of his military career, when Special Defense Force, SDF, had first been created. The world revolved on power and the ties that bound men together, and Dylan was bound to the man in the painting: J. T. Chronopolous, The Guardian, wielding a broadsword in his hands, dressed in black jeans and a black T-shirt with his dark wings spread out on either side of his body, the feathers dragging the ground, an angel god of retribution without mercy.

Merciless--God knew the world was that and worse . . . far worse.

A heavy sigh escaped him, and he slid deeper into one of the overstuffed leather chairs in his living room, slid deeper into the ocean of guilt waiting to drown him.

Jesus, sweet Jesus, what have I done?

His throat was tight.

To die was one thing. Everyone in Special Defense Force, a black ops team run out of the underbelly of the United States Department of Defense, his team, knew their life was on the line for the job, and they'd all signed on willingly. Hell, they'd signed on eagerly, then trained their guts out, through blood and sweat and the crucible of their own experience to keep death at bay. They won their fights. They'd always won--except once.

He lifted his hand to his face and covered his eyes, let his palm rest there, a shield against the hard truth scrolling down the screen of his computer, the results of an eight-month investigation.

"This is ugly, Dylan, and it's only going to get uglier," said the woman who'd spent the day decrypting the files he'd brought with him from Washington, D.C. She was sitting across from him, blond and beautiful, dressed in a pair of bad-girl high heels and a simple, incredibly expensive gray dress that fit her like a glove. "Randolph Lancaster needs to have an accident, a very bad accident. Gillian and I can get on a plane to Washington tonight. No one else ever needs to know. We can survive this."

Assassination of a top-level U.S. government official, that's what she was proposing; that she and Gillian Pentycote, an SDF operator known as Red Dog, go to Washington, D.C., and rig Randolph Lancaster's car to fail, or arrange for him to go swimming one night in his pool stone-cold drunk, with too much precisely administered alcohol in his blood, and drown. Or maybe one of the girls would take him out on his sailboat and drop him over the side, while the other shadowed them in a getaway speedboat.

Either of those plans was a better death than Lancaster deserved.

Through his own auspices at State, and through his "foreign policy adjustments" using a legion of pawns put at his disposal by the various intelligence agencies of the U.S. government, most notably the CIA, Randolph Lancaster had accumulated millions of dollars selling American soldiers through a company called LeedTech.

Lost boys--and none more lost than J.T., because of a LeedTech contract with a Southeast Asian company called Atlas Exports.

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, a quarter of a million, the price of a man's life--the computer had over a hundred invoices for the sale and delivery of over a hundred extremely skilled, superlatively fit soldiers to Atlas for "enhancement and experimental use," each invoice tagged with a coded Department of Defense Special Operations Forces (SOF) identification number.

Dylan's team in Denver, Colorado, comprised eleven elite SOF soldiers, and six years ago one team member's coded ID number had been duly printed on an Atlas Exports invoice--J.T.'s number. He'd been sold by Lancaster as military chattel, set up to disappear during a sanctioned mission in Colombia and be sent to Southeast Asia.

He'd been sold out while under Dylan's command--and then everything had gone even more horrendously, sickeningly wrong.

Dylan slid his hand down to cover his mouth for a moment and lifted his gaze to the woman across from him. She was right. Lancaster needed to be brought down.

Geezus. The depth of the betrayal was numbing.

Randolph Lancaster had been a friend.

Enhancement and experimental use--he knew exactly what the words meant. On the computer screen, on an Atlas Exports invoice dated three years ago, he'd seen his own coded SOF ID number typed across the top of a page.

Sometimes, at night, the bite of the needle would come to him again, waking him with a scream lodged in his throat, his body drenched in sweat. More pain than what he'd been subjected to was literally beyond his imagination. Yet he knew J.T. had suffered much more, torture beyond bearing, transformation beyond reversal. J.T. had been changed into someone else, something else, a half-man/half-genetically altered beast going by the name Conroy Farrel, and that creature was on the loose, out there somewhere in the world and closing in on Denver. Dylan knew it down to his bones. He'd been the one to bait the trap, and "the bait" was showing all the signs of impending escape--heightened alertness, hours spent either pacing or standing stock-still, looking out toward the windows, refusing to speak. Somehow, somewhere, even with her locked deep inside Steele Street, incarcerated on the tenth floor, Conroy Farrel had communicated with Scout Leesom. The message would have been simple: "I'm coming to get you."

"We need to bring J.T. in first, secure him," he said to the blonde. "Then we'll go after Lancaster."

"No." She was adamant, her arms crossing over her chest, her chin firming up, her gaze meeting his with mutinous intensity. Her name was Skeeter Bang-Hart, and out of all the bad girls in the world, she was his. "We go after Lancaster now, take this party to him, give him something to worry about besides trying to kill J.T., and you, and probably the rest of us while he's at it. He needs to go down, Dylan. He needs to go down as hard and as fast as we can make it happen, and SDF can make it happen pretty damn hard and fast."

She wanted blood. She'd wanted it since she'd found the invoices deep-sixed in the no-access files he'd hijacked off an ultra-secure computer in Washington, D.C., but Dylan wasn't going to let her have it, not yet.

He shook his head. "This party started eight weeks ago in Paraguay, in Conroy Farrel's compound on the Tambo River, and it's going to end here, at Steele Street, when we have him back. Then we'll take Lancaster out."

She crossed her legs, tightened her arms, and looked at him long and hard. "You lost him in Paraguay, Dylan, you and Hawkins and Creed and Zach, all four of you, even after Creed hit him with a tranquilizer dart damn near big enough to drop an elephant. The girl was a secondary target at best, and if he doesn't want her back, we've got nothing."

Count on Skeeter to lay the failure of their last mission on the line, but she was wrong about the girl.

"He wants her." Guaranteed. "You saw her. She's not worried. She hasn't been worried from the beginning. Angry, yes, but not scared. She knows he's coming for her, and she doesn't think we have a chance in hell of stopping him. That he might fail hasn't crossed her mind, and four days ago, she started actively looking for him, actively preparing for her escape. He's here now, Skeet, and I need you here, too, you and Gillian. This isn't the time to be splitting the team up. We need everybody on board, everybody in place. How's Cherie doing with the changes on the security system?" Cherie Hacker, a world-class computer nerd and electronic security expert for Steele Street, had been fine-tuning the building ever since they'd brought Scout Leesom to Denver.

J.T. was going to be thinking about how to get inside, and Dylan had decided to make damn sure he could, almost at will. When he hadn't shown up in the first four weeks after the botched mission in Paraguay, Dylan had decided to loosen the security here and there and tighten it in other places, hoping to lure him into making his move. In effect, Dylan had left half the building unlocked. There was risk in the plan, but if he'd thought it would bring J.T. in, he'd have laid a trail of bread crumbs from Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, straight to Steele Street's front door.

"She's got all the outside doors wired into one set of controls, including most of the garage doors, and she's almost finished wiring the elevators," Skeeter said. "We should get down to the office. Cherie's got another shakedown planned in an hour."

He checked his watch. "What about her Quick Mart runs--how are those going?"

"Right on schedule, every day," Skeeter assured him.

The Quick Mart runs were a long shot, sending Cherie out for coffee, making it look like the building was wide open for people to just come and go as they pleased. It was more bait, a low-percentage shot compared to the high-priced piece on the tenth floor, but Dylan was putting everything he had into play. If he didn't get to J.T. first, Lancaster would, and that was a possibility he wasn't willing to accept.

"Who's on the street with her today?"

"Zach," she said.

"Good."

Zachary Prade was one of the original chop shop boys. An ex-CIA agent, he'd been so deeply undercover in the drug trade at one point that Dylan had lost track of him for years. Zach had "been there, done that" in dozens of hellholes around the world. He could more than handle Cherie's coffee run.

Dylan stood up and offered Skeeter his hand, and after a moment of meeting his gaze, she took it and let him pull her to her feet.

He held her there for a moment, then cupped the side of her face with his palm and leaned down to take her mouth with his. The bad girl was all his, and she proved it with her kiss, melting into his arms, holding him close as he slid his hand down her neck and over her breasts, before letting it come to rest low on her belly. Yes, this girl was his, for now and forever.

Deep down, he knew she was scared for all of them, for what their investigation had uncovered and what it could mean for their future, but she would obey. He didn't have a doubt. There'd be no takedown of Randolph Lancaster until he gave the order, and he would when the time was right. Chances were, the team would survive Lancaster's betrayal despite the damage he'd done.

Conroy Farrel was a different matter. The chances of all of them surviving a live capture of the beastly creature J.T. had become were far, far slimmer. He was a warrior at heart and a monster by design--and there wasn't an operator at Steele Street who didn't know it.



CHAPTER TWO

Ketamine hydrochloride. Special K. Monkey Morphine delivered in an automatic syringe shot out of a .22-caliber rimfire rifle. He knew the drill.

Yeah.

Conroy Farrel rubbed the side of his neck where he'd been darted two months ago in Paraguay. With all the cutting-edge psychopharmaceuticals pumping through his bloodstream, he would have thought he could handle a few cc's of the date-rape drug.

Think again, Con, old boy.

The ketamine, a hallucinogenic animal tranquilizer, had damn near twisted him up and tranquilized him into the fifth dimension for weeks, and the guys who had doped him lived across the street from where he was standing in a Denver, Colorado, alley. Worse, far worse than the doping, they'd stolen his girl.

He'd come six thousand miles to get her back.

Con let his gaze slide up the length of the wildest, most contraption-like freight elevator he'd ever seen. It crawled up the side of the building at 738 Steele Street, all iron and steel, looking like a gothic suspension bridge set on end and, somehow, oddly, familiar--damned familiar. Shrouded in the shadows cast by the setting sun, all he could think was that the elevator reminded him of the bridge that spanned the Kwai River just outside Kanchanaburi in western Thailand--not that he liked to think about Thailand too often. Bangkok had been nothing short of brutal on him, half a breath away from the deep sleep. Or maybe less than half a breath. Resurrection, he was sure, was the only thing standing between him and eternity.

And the only thing standing between him and his girl was the building across the street. If she was in there, he was going to get her, and if she wasn't in there, he was going to get whoever was and ask them once where they'd taken her--only once. Scout was tough, as tough as she'd needed to be to survive alone in Southeast Asia, before he'd finally tracked her down on the streets of Bangkok. They'd celebrated her eighteenth birthday in Rangoon, her nineteenth in Vientiane, her twentieth in Phnom Penh, her twenty-first in Da Nang, and her twenty-second in Amsterdam--a promise he'd made her father, Garrett Leesom, a soldier like him, one of the world's warriors whose last breath had been wrung out of him in the same hellhole that had all but killed Con.

Yeah, Scout was tough, like her father. These thugs on Steele Street wouldn't have what it took to break her. But he had what it took to break them, and it would all come to bear on every single one of them, starting with a guy named Dylan Hart, until he had Garrett's daughter back.

He reached into his pocket, felt the business card there, but didn't pull it out. He didn't need to pull it out. The words on the card had been burned into his memory the instant he'd seen them: Dylan Hart, Uptown Autos, We Only Sell the Best, 738 Steele Street, Denver, Colorado. He'd found the card on his kitchen table in Paraguay the day they'd taken Scout.

These boys knew he was coming. Hell, they'd left him an engraved invitation--and they weren't car salesmen. He didn't give a damn what the card said.

good finish to a great series

Coming from someone who has read the entire Crazy and Loose series, this was a very good, fast read and a great wrap to both series. Without giving a lot of the story away, here's what I took from it.

Pros:
* This really acknowledges JT's history with all the Steele Street characters and gives him a worthy, detailed story. It integrates a lot of the past characters nicely.
* Jane Linden was one of my favorite characters, so I really enjoyed her as the female lead.
* The sex scenes were hot, as always. I've always appreciated how TJ writes them without a lot of coy description but at the same time they're not distractingly dirty.
* There was not as much focus on the secondary love story, which I've had a problem with in the other books in these series. (I always felt that Skeeter and Dylan's love story got hijacked by Travis and Red Dog.)

Cons
* It seems like there was not as much sex in this one. Do you get the idea that I read these books for the sex? :-)
* I'm confused by the time lines in these stories. Maybe I'm just distracted by all the sex.
* SMALL SPOILER: The sudden history between Jane and JT was jarring, only in that I find it hard to believe that it was never mention before. Having said that, I did still like the flashbacks.
* If this is truly the last in the series, I'm disappointed that some characters were missing. On the other hand, it does make sense, because the focus was on the "original" chop shop boys.

Steele Street Series Wraps up with a Bang -- or 20

Wow. Wow. Wow. I've read every one of Tara Janzen's novels in her "Crazy" and "Loose" series, and I have to say that this is an excellent end to a pulse-pounding thrill ride that began with Superman's story all these years ago. The action is as fast as the cars, and the romance is as explosive as the invasion of 738 Steele Street.

Better still, the main characters are given plenty of dimension, even though they share the pages with so many other interesting and/or menacing players. This is a series that offers smart, tough women and strong, yet sensitive men. None of this "stand around wringing your hands and squealing" with these heroines! Jane, the former street rat turned art gallery owner, more than holds her own with J.T./Con without descending into Queen B*tch" territory. And as the chemically enhanced superwarrior and former Special Ops soldier, J.T./Con demonstrates his humanity in his interactions with Jane and his regard for his ward.

One word of caution -- Janzen's novels are very much like the show "24" with literally dozens of characters in movement in a very short period of time. If you are confused by quick transitions between storylines and multiple points of view, this novel is not your cup of tea.

For me, however, this was a wonderful finish to two very good series. I'll miss the Steele Street gang, but look forward to seeing what Janzen comes up with in her next book.

Better than I could have hoped for...MILD SPOILERS

Such a satisfying wrap up to the dual "Crazy" and "Loose" series. JT (Con) is hot, protective, intensely focused on his mission, and yet vulnerable when confronted with evidence of the life of which he has no memory. Jane is a beautiful art gallery manager who still retains her street rat instincts. JT and Jane became close 6 years ago after she got caught picking his friend's pocket. On the night before his last mission, they become lovers. He goes off to Columbia, where he is presumed to have been killed. In Breaking Loose, we find out that JT is not dead. The Steele Street boys kidnap his ward, Scout, to lure him to Denver. While he is trying to recover Scout, things go south and Jane ends up being in the car JT steals to escape. He is an unwilling hostage taker, but Jane refuses to get out of the car. JT is kind of perplexed by this turn of events. In one of many classic Tara Janzen lines, JT asks Jane, "Why are you sticking to me like superglue gone wrong? Why are you still in this car?" These two are terrific together, and the sexual tension between them is HOT.

After she is taken "hostage", Jane tries to convince JT to trust his former friends but even as he senses a connection to and a history with them, he is reluctant to turn to them for help. The Steele Street boys are grimly and desperately determined to bring "the best one of us all" back to the fold. As the wild night unfolds, you can feel the tension ratcheting up. Add one biologically altered super monster with an agenda and a corrupt leader to the Steele Street crew's attempts to intercept JT, and JT's talent at evasion... the result is a wild ride, culminating with one heck of a collision.

The backstory for Jane and JT is given in a series of flashbacks to their time together 6 years ago. Wonderfully told and you feel for the street urchin Jane, struggling to make a way into the real world, and you understand the connection between the two, as JT had been in Jane's place prior to going into the service.

There is a nice romantic subplot between JT's business partner, Jack, and Scout. Jack has some of the best comedic lines in the book.

As a long time reader and fan of these series, I could not have asked for a more satisfying end. I got the closure I was looking for without the gratuitous "kitchen sink" approach of bringing every character from the series back for a reunion. There was no overnight fix for JT's amnesia, although there was some mediation due to a believable treatment, foreshadowed by Gillian's success with the same treatment. I was mostly looking for closure for Kid, who became consumed with finding his brother's murderers, and for Creed, who was emotionally slain by having to watch his best friend be tortured while he was forced to watch, tied up and helpless to save him. Could not have been more perfect.

If you have read the series, Loose Ends will pack an emotional wallop. If you are new to the series, I think the book will still be entertaining as a stand alone, but you probably won't require the entire box of tissues I went through. Loose Ends starts strong on the first page, and only picks up speed. It grabs you and is so action packed, you will be flying through the pages. Tara Janzen creates a vivid world and writes with flair. She flows so easily from gritty, heart stopping action to humor to emotionally wrenching moments. I really like her writing style.

I am sorry to see the series end, but wow! What a way to go!
