Boys Against Girls

I think this is a pretty good book overall. I doubt adults would like it, but kids my age would. This is a book for both, boys and girls. I liked how the book was written because there were three boys in a family and three girls in a family that lived by each other. I liked how the author put in both sexes so it's just not a boy book or just a girl book.
In a small town, there lived two certain families, the Hatford and the Malloy family. The Hatford family consists of three boys, the Malloy family consists of three girls.
The two families were neighbors and they loved to these each other, so the Hatford boys thought they had a great idea by going to tell the girls that the animal, the Abaguchie, exsisted and was spotted close where they live. The Malloy girls believed the guys, as the Hatford boys just keep on playing along with them like the animal really exsisted and it was close to their house.

Overall, I would say this book was pretty well written for a kid my age.

Excelent book

I read Boys Against Girls by Phyllis Reynold Neylor, this is a Realistic Fiction book. This story takes place in West Virginia in the modern life. The author shows all the characters in the first chapter. This story is about the four Hatford brothers and the three Malloy sisters, they made tricks to each other every day. Wally Hatford told Caroline Malloy that a strange creature known as the Abaguchie has been spotted in the area. From that moment they start to scare each other. The author mixes suspense with funny things. This book is for people that likes weird things. I liked this book a lot because at the end it gets a little strange, I recommend it and I give five stars.

Boys Against Girls the book you should read!!!

I read Boys Against Girls for a book report. It is the best book I have read. Wally and his brothers think they are smarer than the girls when they built an Abaguchie( the monster in the town in the book) trap. But that night they herd the bell that they connected to the trap. Did they catch the Abaguchie. You should read to find out. I really enjoyed this book. There are alot of things adults wold laugh at. If you want a funny book, this one will keep you laughing for hours. Please read this book. If you think it dosen't look good from the cover. you should use the saying " Never Judge a book by a cover." I really enjoyed it and you will too. Read Boys Against Girls.

Cute mysteries to get your kid reading!

My son and I both love these books. The stories are cute; the solutions are just hard enough. At the end of each Nate the Great book there is a section with jokes, recipes, experiments, drawings etc. My son loves those as much as the stories. Every joke I've come across so far is clean... which is not true of all kids joke books. I will definitely be building on my collection!

Great for anyone who wants to bridge from easy readers into Encyclopedia Brown or Hardy Boys books. An easy enjoyable read for a 2nd to 3rd grader.

A Tough Case to Crack

We thought this was one of Nate's toughest cases. Poor Pip, time is running out and he doesn't know what he is supposed to do. Pip finds a note and he asks Nate to figure out what it means. Nate keeps thinking he has solved the case, but Rosamond keeps saying "No". Read this book to find out how Nate solves the case with just minutes to spare.

My 2nd grade son loves this series and has turned him from barely reading to reading at or above grade level. Why - because Nate the Great the boy detective who LOVES pancakes - manages to solve each case before him. He has interesting friends including Rosamond and her four cats! The activities at the back of this book are fantastic. Learn how to make a musical instrument, a rain stick and how to lift fingerprints. Something all good detectives need to know. Plus there are some funny riddles as usual. Great read.

Good book but different title

If you have already read "Beyond Reach" by Karin Slaughter, dont bother to buy this book "Skin Privilege" because it is the same book, just has another title. I read all of her books and couldnt for the life of me understand how I could have missed this one called "Skin Privilege". Then I finally read a review of what it was about and realized, gosh, I am glad I didnt buy it. I had already read it! I absolutely hated the ending however.

Low Return on Investment

I purchased this book at the airport as a diversion during a trip. Initially, I was intrigued and it was an easy read. However, as the book progressed, it became unfocused and unrealistic. What was the point of all the attention given to the lawsuit at the beginning of the book? It was never really part of the story and did not adequately explain the transformation of a strong, intelligent woman into a one-dimentional, clingy drone. And, as bodies begin to drop like flies (or, in some cases, get thrown through hotel windows), would no one actually consider bringing in reinforcements to address what is clearly a town out of control? Finally, the ending was more than unsatisfying. It was needlessly depressing and almost felt as though the last 5 pages were written by someone else or had gotten mixed in from another book. Did the author just get tired of writting and decide she had something else she needed to go do? Loyal fans might enjoy this book but anyone looking for a well-written, self-contained story with a logical ending might do well to keep looking. When I consider the time spent reading the book, I don't feel as though there was sufficient return on my investment to have made it worthwhile.

unoriginal cheap shot

I normally like Karin Slaughter and have enjoyed her other novels, but this one left me feeling cheated and almost angry. As the creator of her characters, Ms Slaughter is certainly entitled to take her stories wherever she may choose, but I felt the ending she chose cheapened her story and was purely for shock value. It also felt copied- Elizabeth George chose the same fate for one of her major characters a few years ago. And Ms George's novel left me feeling the same way as this one- irritated that an author I like so much would end a novel with a tragic event that seems to have been written only to sell more books.

Oh How Lovely

This is the only book that I have read cover to cover literally ten times. I have the book basically memorized. I first read it several year ago in my middle school years. Once I started reading I could not put it down! I will always have a copy of it in my house hold and it is in my top three books list.
This a story about a young girl about six years of age whom is amidst WWll in Japan. When her father leaves to go fight in the war the young lady along with her fellow sisters and brother to find safety. Along the way she some how get seperated from her family and is left alone for months dodging bullets, bombs and surviving by finding abandoned gardens and eating out of dead soldiers knapsacks. Her adventure takes her from running from a crazy soldier to a hole in the ground where she finds an old couple who take care of her until the young girl is forced to march around a warfront in the brightnees of day in front of American soldiers marching with a white flag in her hand.
No written report could possibly do this book it's justice. You have to read and live the tale yourself.

A Good Children's Book

I moved to Okinawa in 1991 when my parents were both stationed at Kadena Air Force Base. I was eight years old at the time and not long after arriving, I happened to check this book out of the school library. To assume that children cannot understand or appriciate the meaning of war and the hardships that it entails is insulting to their intellegence. I loved this book, and I treasure the signed copy I got in 1993 when Higa-san held a signing at Camp Lester. Like "Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes" this book, narrated by a child, makes the popularly forgotten Pacific Campaign of WWII assessable to children who will then become socially responsible adults. It does not do to shelter children from the injustice of the world.

The book is only mildly graphic, the narrative is heart breaking, and it deserves a place in school libraries right next to Sadako, "Number the Stars" and "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl"

A Gripping Tale of Survival

How a young girl of 7 years can survive on her own on the battlefields of war-torn Okinawa, 1945, is absolutely astonishing. As a history teacher in Okinawa, Japan, I have run accross a wide array of materials concerning the Battle of Okinawa, but no other book so vividly details the human side of the struggle from the viewpoint of civilian Okinawans. This is a heart-warming story of triumph in the midst of great tragedy. I often encourage my students to place themselves in the "shoes" of those whom we are studying, to go beyond just facts and figures and identify with the real people who experienced history. Tomiko Higa takes the reader directly to the Battle of Okinawa through the eyes of a child.

Seriously, what even happened to make this book necessary?

I cannot imagine, as an author, wanting to leave my readers heartbroken after making them care for my characters, but that is what Julia London has done here. I was not only in tears at the end, but also just angry at this fact. Don't get me wrong, I want a novel to be realistic up to a certain degree, but the epilogue of this books was unnecessarily devastating. I'm not going to break down the story for you, I don't see why reviews even bother to do that, but I will say that this storyline seemed surprisingly out of sorts when it came to the series it was supposed to belong to. Neither Julian nor Claudia seem in character compared to their own story, and there is but a passing remark about the very Rogues of Regent Street that the series focused on originally. While it was nice to see what happened to Julian's banished sister, the fact that they are siblings is about the only connection to the original rogues, and the others aren't even mentioned in the epilogue. It's like this book is a representation of Sophie's feelings, it's not really a rouges book, just as she wasn't really an adult in her siblings' eyes. Overall I wish there had been more of what made the other books so entertaining, the witty banter, the doubts and struggles between the protagonists- Sophie and Caleb just kind of easily fall in love, have a few doubts, and then work things out. I've enjoyed quite a few of London's novels, but this was a majorly disappointing way to end such a fun series.

Some Secrets Should Remain Hidden

Julia London is a wonderful writer whose books have always kept me enthralled from the opening page until the last, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning. The same cannot be said, regretfully, of "The Secret Lover." The story revolves around a divorced victim of marital abuse, Sophie Dane, who moves back to London for a fresh start after years of living abroad as the companion to an eccentric Frenchwoman, Honorine. As she tries to transcend her scandalous past, she meets two brothers, one legitimate, one not, and has to choose between following her heart down a path of further notoriety or taking what appears to be the safer route encouraged by her family. The main problem with this book for me was the lack of any really likeable characters in it. The heroine is retiring, easily manipulated, and insecure. These are probably honest qualities of a victim of domestic abuse, but as I was reading the book, I kept thinking to myself,"Get some backbone, Sophie!" The hero is lackluster, the villain is wholly one-dimensional, and even the secondary characters, Sophie's Frenchwoman, Honorine, and her servants, Fabrice and Roland, who are supposed to provide comic relief, leave the reader feeling flat. What is truly sad, however, is what Julia London does in "The Secret Lover" with Sophie's brother, Julian Dane, and his wife, Claudia, who were the protaganists of her earlier book, "The Ruthless Charmer." If you loved them in that book, you will hate them here, as they have turned into pompous know-it-alls, with no compassion and little humor. Maybe it was because I did not warm to any of the characters that I found this book to be an incredibly slow read. The book is well written from a technical standpoint, but unless you can identify with a heroine-as-victim, you may find that it lacks that special "sizzle" that have marked Julia London's previous works.

A Magnificent Tale Your Won't Forget

The first 40 pages are rather slow but Ms. London is such a gifted writer it is still hard to put the book aside. Once Caleb comes on the scene things pick up. This is a heart-breaking storyline in many ways and the secondary characters are vividly portrayed to great detail. It is probably one of the more powerful stories of love and second chances and redemption.(The House of Gentle Men by Kathy Hepinstall is another remarkable story that you will never forget.)
It's a pleasure to read all of Ms. London's books. There is nothing frivolous or wimpering about her writing style and her ability to tell a whopping good story. You can see why she doesn't spew these books out as fast as some other authors do. Her work is very well crafted and her characters are carefully drawn out. The sex is pretty good, too.
However, I also hated the Epilogue. Don't read it.

The promo copy on the ARC of Child's new thriller proclaims, "We dare to make this claim: Lee Child is the best thriller writer you're probably not reading-yet." Hopefully the "six-figure" marketing campaign promised by Child's new publisher will make that statement obsolete, because readers will be hard-pressed to find a more engaging thriller this spring season. Child is a master of storytelling skills, not least the plot twist, and the opening chapter of this novel spins a doozy, as a high-octane, extremely violent action sequence sees Child hero Jack Reacher rescue a young man, 20-year-old Richard Beck, from an attempted kidnapping before the rug is pulled out from under the reader with the chapter's last line. The rest of the novel centers on the Beck family's isolated, heavily guarded estate on the Maine coast where Reacher takes Richard. Richard's father is suspected by Feds of being a major drug dealer and the kidnapper of another Fed, and also seems to have ties to a fiend who killed Reacher's lady 10 years before, someone Reacher thought he'd killed in turn, in a vengeance slaying. Tension runs high, then extremely high, as Reacher, ingratiating himself with the dealer and hired on as a bodyguard, pokes around the estate, looking for the kidnapped Fed and evading and/or disposing of in-house bad guys as they begin to suspect he's not who he seems. But then little in Child's novels is as it at first seems, and numerous further plot twists spark the story line. What makes the novel really zing, though, is Reacher's narration-a unique mix of the brainy and the brutal, of strategic thinking and explosive action, moral rumination and ruthless force, marking him as one of the most memorable heroes in contemporary thrillerdom. Any thriller fan who has yet to read Lee Child should start now.

Stephen Hunter's Bob the Nailer novels are the perfect example of this special breed, but Child's Jake Reacher series can match Bob stride for stride. Child has a new publisher committed to bringing the Reacher series, now in its seventh installment, the crossover success it has long deserved, and fortunately, the book they've picked to do it with is a corker. Beginning with a stunning set-piece involving the apparent kidnapping of a college student, the novel offers the brooding Reacher, a former military policeman, the chance to settle a score with an old nemesis, renegade army intelligence officer Quinn, whom Reacher believed was dead until a chance encounter on a Boston street. Using his old sources to verify Quinn's identity, Reacher finds himself in the middle of an FBI investigation of shady tycoon Zachary Beck. The best thrillers run on high-octane narrative fuel, but they are not plot driven. To generate real thrills, an author must put real people behind the wheel, and Child does exactly that. Reacher may grow from type--the tough-guy loner, wounded and trying unsuccessfully to disengage--but he brings his own sinewy presence to the role. Persuasive Persuader!

I read one of Lee Child's books and was so struck with his character, Jack Reacher, and the lean, elegant style of Child's writing that I read all seven novels nonstop.
Since this is his newest novel, it might be the first one you find, but I believe you will enjoy the series more if you track down the first volume, "Killing Floor," and then read each of the seven in succession.
In "Persuader," Jack Reacher has the jolting discovery of evil nemesis Ouinn's existence, whom Reacher thought he had eliminated a decade ago. To be ultimately rid of Quinn, Reacher faces a dual challenge -- penetrate an organized crime operation and aid the Federal government in the rescue of one of its agents.
Reacher's engaging narration is a combination of strategic thinking and forceful explosion, which is a brilliant juxtaposition. Jack Reacher is a loner, without fear, and without surrender - and his intense drive will lead him to settle the score.
Tension, mayhem, and action are propelled throughout Child's novels. This is definitely among the finest adventure fiction being written in America today.

Jack gets his teeth loosened

PERSUADER, the seventh installment of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, is perhaps the best so far.
On a Boston sidewalk, Reacher almost collides with a man shot three times - including twice in the head - and pitched off a cliff into the Pacific ten years before. Having a former colleague in the Military Police put a trace on the man's license plate brings the Drug Enforcement Agency to Jack's door. And what might your interest be, sir? Reacher, is it?
Jack, a former Army MP major that now wanders the United States as a near-vagrant always on the lookout for wrongs to rectify, finds himself aiding the Feds as he goes undercover to penetrate a fortified mansion on an isolated headland on Maine's wild coast. The DEA suspects that the mansion's owner, Zachary Beck, is using his importing business to bring in something other than Oriental floor coverings. And Beck apparently has a connection to Reacher's sidewalk ghost. Jack doesn't care about Beck or his rugs, but does have another old score to settle once and for all. And this time he going to get it right, or die trying.
The plot of PERSUADER includes the first time I can recall Jack feeling fear. Well, not fear maybe, but at least apprehension. Beck's gatekeeper, Paulie, is six inches taller, ten inches wider across the shoulders, and two hundred pounds heavier than our hero. Paulie's arms are bigger than Jack's legs. And he's surprisingly quick. Both you and Reacher know that, at some point, he's going to have to fight this monster. From Jack's point of view, that's going to be the dodgy bit. The reader savors the expectation.
Jack's my favorite Loner and Tough Guy in the Trashy Literature genre. But, his habitual physical impregnability becomes almost monotonous. So, the fact that Reacher's life comes within a gossamer thread of being extinguished more than once in this thriller is refreshing. Now that his vulnerability has been established, I look forward more than ever to Child's next volume.
Part of Jack's allure is that there's a hint of dysfunctionality to his personality. In PERSUADER, the reader learns that during Reacher's time in the service as an Army officer, he owned no civilian clothes. In an earlier book, it's revealed that Jack doesn't even know how to iron a shirt. Child's hero has some serious issues, which I hope someday the author will explore.

Former Military Police officer Jack Reacher is back for a seventh time in "Persuader", the latest from talented thrill writer Lee Child. While walking down the streets of Boston, Reacher bumps into a "ghost" from his past - Quinn - a man who Reacher thought he had killed a decade prior. Through a license plate, Reacher traces Quinn to Zachary Beck, a suspected heavy in the drug trade. Reacher teams up with DEA agent Susan Duffy, who is heading an "off-the-books" sting of Beck in an attempt to free one of Duffy's agents who had infiltrated Beck's operation, but was found-out. In concert with the DEA, a kidnapping of Beck's college-student son Richard is staged. Reacher plays the "hero", rescuing Richard and, in the events that follow, gets inside the reclusive Beck's illicit business. Reacher gains Beck's trust and, through a couple of convenient "accidents", is given a security job to fill the unplanned vacancies. Woven through the story through a series of flashbacks is the tale of the sadistic Quinn, gradually unveiling the root of Reacher's vengeance.
Child writes with razor sharp efficiency and clarity: a tight plot with no pretense of embellishment beyond the requisite violence and mayhem. Child's Reacher is the ultimate stoic loaner - Clint Eastwood's "man without a name" in a modern setting where the villains are meaner and the guns a lot bigger. Child writes with a clear and unambiguous sense of right and wrong, of good and evil. And while Reacher runs no risk on canonization, the bad guys are so devoid of any redeeming social value that the contrast is crystal clear. "Persuader" is high adrenalin fiction without excuse: blunt, brutal, and suspenseful: a true page-turner and the ultimate summer read.

Chapter One

A man who has committed a crime needs to cover his tracks, even if he made them while wearing the best shoes that money can buy.

In order to cover his, Lord Elliot Rothwell reentered his family's London home amidst the late arrivals to his brother's ball. He acted like a young man who had briefly gone out to take some air on this glorious, breezy May night.

With one step over the threshold he no longer entered but instead greeted. The tall, handsome, youngest brother of the fourth Marquess of Easterbrook—the Rothwell sibling considered the most amiable and normal—bestowed smiles on everyone and very warm ones on certain ladies.

A quarter hour later Elliot slid into a conversation with Lady Falrith as smoothly as he had just slipped back into the ballroom. He resumed a topic aborted two hours earlier, and flattered the lady so adroitly that she forgot that he had excused himself long ago. Within minutes Lady Falrith ceased to care about the passage of time.

While Elliot charmed Lady Falrith he scanned the crush in the ballroom for his brother. Not his brother Hayden, who along with his new wife, Alexia, was hosting this ball. He sought the eye of his other brother, Christian, Marquess of Easterbrook.

Christian's gaze never met his but Elliot's return to the ball was noted. Christian disengaged from a circle of lords on the far side of the room and walked to the door.

Elliot danced a waltz with Lady Falrith before continuing this night's mission. He did so in penance for using the lady, and in silent thanks for her unwitting aid. Lady Falrith's sense of time could be fluid, and her memory very optimistic. By the morning she would believe that Elliot had attended on her all night and was in pursuit of her. Her confidence in her own appeal would prove useful should something untoward develop regarding his activities in the city tonight.

The waltz over, he again excused himself. Unlike Christian, who had walked in isolation and with purpose for the door, Elliot strolled down the ballroom sociably, greeting and chatting until he sidled next to his new sister-in-law, Alexia.

"It is going well, don't you agree?" she asked. Her gaze swept the chamber, seeking empirical confirmation.

"It is a triumph, Alexia." And it was, for her. A triumph of spirit and character, and maybe a triumph of love.

Alexia was not the sort of woman whom society had expected Hayden to marry. She had no family and no fortune. She was so sensible that she had never learned how to dissemble, let alone flirt. Yet here she was hosting a grand ball in the home of a marquess, her dark hair impeccably styled and her headdress and garments the last word in fashion. The penniless orphan had married a man who loved her in a way he had never loved before.

Elliot trusted the marriage would be a good one. Alexia would see to that. History had proven that love was a dangerous emotion for Rothwell men. Sensible, practical Alexia would know how to use the love to keep the danger corralled, however. Elliot suspected that she had already tamed the beast several times.

He joined her in admiring the night's success. In the far corner a small, pale woman held court. One too many plumes flourished in the headdress decorating her blonde hair. All the while she kept one gleaming eye on the male attention being paid to a pretty girl nearby.

"The triumph is yours, Alexia, but I think that my aunt intends to take home the biggest prize this hunting season."

"Your aunt Henrietta is understandably happy about Caroline's first season. Two titles have paid addresses of late. However, she is vexed with me tonight because I did not invite one of those titles to this ball, despite her command to do so."

Elliot had little interest in his aunt's vexations. He did, however, have a strong interest in the guest list.

"I have not seen Miss Blair, Alexia. No black habits. No undressed hair. Did Hayden forbid you to invite her?"

"Not at all. Phaedra is abroad. She embarked over a fortnight ago."

He did not want to appear too curious, but . . . "Abroad, you say?"

Her violet eyes warmed with humor. She gave him all of her attention, which, considering the subject, he would rather not have.

"Naples first, then a tour of the south. I told her that you say it is unwise to visit Italy in the heat of summer, but she spoke of desiring to investigate the rituals and feasts of that season." She inclined her head confidentially. "I believe that her father's passing affected her more than she admits. Her final meeting with him was an emotional one. It distressed her. I believe she undertook this voyage in order to lift her spirits."

He did not doubt a deathbed parting with a father could be emotional. His own had touched him indelibly. Tonight, however, he was more interested in Miss Blair's whereabouts, and in matters that had been discussed with her father before they made that permanent farewell.

"If you know where she planned to reside in Naples, I will call on her when I go if she is still there."

"She did leave a residence that she hoped to use. She had learned about it from a friend. If she has not returned prior to your own journey, I will be grateful if you call on her. Her independence sometimes leads to carelessness, so I do worry about her."

He doubted Phaedra Blair took well anyone's worrying about her. Alexia was very good to do so anyway.

"Oh, dear," muttered Alexia.

He saw what caused the sigh that followed. Henrietta aimed for them, her plumes dancing and her dreamy, sparkling eyes displaying glints of determination.

"I think she is after you," Alexia whispered. "Float away, or she will bend your ear complaining how Easterbrook permitted me to host a ball without asking for her agreement. She thinks her residence in this house makes her the mistress of it."

Elliot could float with the best of them. He was long gone downstream before his aunt arrived.

After a quick cut to the servants' corridor and a fast nip up the back stairs, Elliot approached Christian's chambers. He entered the sitting room to find his brother lounging in a chair in the corner.
The sharp look Christian shot at him proved Easterbrook's mind was not nearly as relaxed as his body.

"I did not find it," Elliot said, answering the question those dark eyes asked. "If it is in his offices or his home, it is very well hidden."

Christian audibly exhaled. The sound carried his annoyance that this matter had recently interrupted his freedom to spend his days doing whatever it was that he normally did. Elliot had no idea what those activities might be. No one really knew what Christian was about anymore.

"On knowing he was about to die, he may have burned it," Elliot suggested.

"Merris Langton displayed a character that was unlikely to think of sparing others, even when he was at death's door." Christian crooked a finger under the top of his perfectly tied cravat and gave a little yank to loosen it.

Christian appeared splendid tonight, every inch the lord of the realm. His coats and linens announced their superior quality with every thread. His gesture with the cravat hinted at his discomfort with the night's formality, however, as surely as the long queue of his unfashionably long, dark hair indicated his eccentric bent.

Elliot assumed his brother longed to shed the sartorial symbols of civilization and swathe himself in that exotic robe he often wore. One normally found him barefoot in these chambers, not wearing silk hose and pumps. Currently the only hint of his normal dishabille in the house was the unbuttoned frock coat and the liquid manner in which his tall body molded itself to the chair's upholstery.

"You checked for loose floorboards and such?" Christian asked.

"I risked discovery to do so. I was in both buildings too long, and a constable passed by as I left the City offices. It is dark, there was no lamp near the door, however . . ."

His description of his adventure suggested more caution than he had experienced. He believed there were occasions when there was no choice except to break a law, but he had never expected to be so coldly indifferent to doing so when such an occasion arrived for him.

"You have been at this ball all night, should any questions arise," Christian said. "Langton owned a small publishing house that favored radical texts. He was also a man with a taste for blackmail, as we have learned. The pity is that he went and died before I could pay him off. Now Richard Drury's manuscript is God knows where, and its sordid lie about our father may yet see the light of day."

"I will make sure it does not."

"Do you think someone else got to it before you? I am probably not the only person Langton approached."

"I saw no indication that anyone had gone through his belongings yet. Not even his solicitor or executor. He was only buried this afternoon. I do not think it was in either place when he died."

"That is damned inconvenient."

"Inconvenient but not insurmountable. I will find it, and I will destroy it if necessary."

Christian's attention narrowed on him. "You speak with confidence. You know where that damned manuscript is, don't you?"

"I have a good idea. If I am right, we will be done with this soon. It may still cost you."

"Pay. Richard Drury was a member of Parliament and, despite his extreme views, a respected intellectual. If his memoirs include such an accusation against my father, many will believe it."

I admired MH's Phaedra, but thumbs-down on her nonetheless

The comparison to a conqueror would apply in Madeline Hunter's LESSONS OF DESIRE if Elliot Rothwell actually did anything. Instead, he harbors a lot of emotional angst and he acquiesces to everything according to Phaedra's terms and conditions. I have to admire Madeline Hunter for writing a heroine so different from the historical-romance norm such as Phaedra Blair, but I can't say I liked Phaedra and Elliot together. The book belongs to Phaedra Blair, her eccentric individuality, her dogged pursuit to print her late father's explosive memoirs, and her investigation to discover her late mother's last lover. On his deathbed, Phaedra's father claimed this last lover of her mother's eventually caused her mother's morose decline. Elliot Rothwell accompanies Phaedra on this journey to discover her mother's last lover. Elliot tries to dissuade her from printing portions of the memoirs which vilify his family, but he mostly cheers her on from the sidelines. Throughout the second half, Elliot inappropriately grovels at Phaedra's feet quite a bit too. Even following the very last page of this 386-page paperback, it didn't seem like Phaedra really wanted to marry him. Although she finally agrees and thinks she wants marriage with Elliot, she unfairly tests Elliot quite a bit. She makes him beg and voice copious words of love and affection before nonchalantly agreeing to marriage. Phaedra really doesn't deserve Elliot, and I was a little sickened by Elliot's constant debased groveling at Phaedra's feet.

I found the plotting, prose and settings below-average in this novel, but my dislike of the characters may have something to do with that feeling. For many romance books with relatively weak plotting, it's usually a hit-or-miss deal resting on whether the characters work for you or not. Madeline Hunter is better in this respect than most because she usually intersperses some intriguing plotting aside from a gritty romance itself. In LESSONS OF DESIRE, I felt the incongruous h/h interaction took away from the plotting dealing with Phaedra's memoirs. STEALING HEAVEN (*****) also featured a confident, experienced heroine at odds with her hero. There however, the hero turned heaven and earth upside down for his heroine, and it was very compelling. The combative tension there was mutually acknowledged and anticipated by both. In LESSONS OF DESIRE, Elliot doesn't really do anything, and his excessive groveling at the end seemed very inappropriate for a woman who clearly doesn't want marriage. Her last-second turnaround towards marriage wasn't very convincing either.

In many ways, LESSONS OF DESIRE represents the antithesis of RULES OF SEDUCTION and its heroine. RULES OF SEDUCTION's Alexia was practical, sensible and amenable to marriage, while LESSONS OF DESIRE's Phaedra is the polar opposite. Phaedra doesn't believe in the very institution of marriage.

Phaedra Blair believes in a philosophy espoused by her late mother, "free love" (a forward concept for the time period). Later in the novel, Elliot accurately recognizes the philosophy for what it is: "free pleasure." Phaedra also scorns a marital relationship which in her view chains a woman to a man. Poor Elliot; more than once, Phaedra fervently rebels against marriage with Elliot. When Elliot disconsolately provides Phaedra with the names of lawyers who help women in divorce cases, Phaedra hypocritically feels a "twist of disappointment" that Elliot would not contest her wishes for undoing their marriage. When Elliot writes to her expressing concern for her safety at her home, Phaedra almost blames Elliot for not asking her to come live with him. All this after Elliot practically begs her to continue with the marriage only to have her reject the marriage, and by extension, him! And over what? A feminist philosophy which repudiates the notion of marriage and how it always has to be: the woman chained to the man. If anything, it was Elliot enslaved by Phaedra, not the other way around. I thought it was incongruous to have Elliot use the words "love" first when it was always Phaedra who rejected and rebelled from him.

Elliot chances on too many opportunities to protect Phaedra from herself but he never seizes them. The book makes Elliot too much of a romantic goody boy: in Italy, he arranges to liberate Phaedra from an imprisonment of her own making twice, he protects her, he submits to her conditions for intimacy, he accepts Phaedra's lifestyle of "free love" and defends Phaedra's mother and her way of life when Phaedra expresses hatred towards her mother, he honors Phaedra's oath to print her father's controversial memoirs, he never coerces the witness Merriweather to retract statements which impugn Elliot's family, he never asks Phaedra to omit the portions of the memoirs which malign his family's name, he doesn't even abscond with the manuscript when Pheadra didn't want to print them herself.

Some of the transitions from a grave, quarrelsome tension to a sensual undercurrent seemed unsuitable at best, very jarring at worst. They're arguing over the gravity of how these memoirs could sully families' names and all of a sudden there's all this sexual chemistry. Other times, Elliot's thoughts over his mother's cheating and his father's cold imprisonment segues into his desire for Phaedra (p. 69). It didn't work for me, but maybe it did for others.

Finally, I didn't like this book weighing the greater evil between their father-the-jailer and their mother-the-adulteress. Elliot's mother loves another and in response, his father incarcerates her. Of the two evils, LESSONS OF DESIRE taints Elliot's father the late Marquess of Easterbrook's actions as the greater evil. I'm not so sure. He tragically loved someone who loved another. The father responded unfairly, but I don't believe their mother's betrayal in wedlock was somehow "less wrong."

Her Weakest Book

I usually really enjoy Ms. Hunter's books - but this one was weak. First - the heroine was what myself and my romance-reading girlfriends refer to as a "feminist ninny". Not a genuine feminist - one of those ones who seem to populate romance novels purely because they are supposed to create drama through their "difference". What they actually create is a lot of irritating banter-for-the-sake-of-merely disagreeing banter; and they disagree with the "hero" just because his opinions are those of a man. They also make stupid decisions, based on their rigid "principles", which are actually just plain foolish, and even dangerous. My other major issue is - nothing really HAPPENS in this book, plot-wise. It - and its heroine - rapidly grow tedious. Ho - hum!

Pearls Before Swine

I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately I was very disappointed, mostly because of the heroine. She is not someone I would know or want to know. I am no prude, but in my opinion, "free love" and romance are oxymorons.

Even though Ms. Hunter went to great lenghts in her depiction of how Phaedra was raised to be a free thinker, I found her to a selfish, closed minded ideologue. She did not care about how her choices impacted those she cared about and who cared about her. She was unyielding in her opinions and not open to discourse unless it reinforced her own positions.

The strangest thing about her philosophies was that she refused to reconsider them even though she was fully aware of the negative impact her mother's lifestyle and choices had on her.

I would not call her a free thinker. She was a mouthpiece for her mother, but what were her own opinions? A free thinker does not agree with everything they are told. Rather, they think independently and critcally and come to their own conclusions.

My own conclusions are that Phaedra is one of the worst heriones ever featured in a romance novel and that wasting a fine hero like Lord Elliot on her is like throwing throwing pearls before swine.
