Some pig

Like many of my generation, I came to "Babe" via the movies. I'm not proud of this fact. As a children's librarian I like to pretend that I've heard about all my children's books in their original papery forms. This is hardly the case, of course. Lots of book (like the wonderful "Millions" by Frank Cottrell Boyce) first come to my attention through their film. "Babe" is one of those books though that stands up well to a reading after viewing its adaptation to the silver screen. Dick King-Smith had enough guts and wherewithal to write a children's book about a pig despite the fact that the greatest pig adventure tale (i.e. "Charlotte's Web") was bound to draw comparisons. But did he care what die-hard White fans would say? Not he! He wrote a truly interesting, original, and deeply meaningful tale all on his own and devil take the consequences! Babe has the inherent sweetness of Wilbur and the pluck and charm of Walter R. Brooks', "Freddy". There's even a moral to the tale, but it's so sly and unassuming that kids will end up learning something despite themselves. Well done there.

Farmer Hogget is a man of few words. Running a small farm of sheep, the occasional goose, and a family of sheepdogs, Hogget has never owned a pig (despite his own swinish name). At a nearby fair he happens to correctly guess the weight of a small piglet up for grabs. The pig is happy to go with Hogget but is deeply lonely and the farmer's kind-hearted sheepdog Fly takes the piggy under her wing and raises him as she does her own puppies. It soon becomes clear that Babe, as the pig is called, has a fast mind and is quick to learn. He befriends an old sheep named Ma and learns that by speaking politely to ewes, like herself, he is able to herd them as effectively as any sheepdog. Farmer Hogget is initially bemused by the idea but when it becomes clear that Babe is not only a first-rate sheep-pig but also a great protector of the flock, Hogget can't help but consider entering the animal in the upcoming sheepdog trials. But it's only when Fly and the sheep consider talking to one another sanely that Babe is given the key to keeping his master from becoming the laughing stock of the country.

It's hard to read a book like this and not get bopped over the head time and time again by the things the movie added to the mix. In this story you will find no male sheepdog, no wacky duck sidekick, no singing mice, and no self-assured cat villainess. You don't need all that. This is a book that has as much emotional oomph as any Technicolor adaptation. Comparisons to E.B. White's book are inevitable, but the two stories aren't as similar as you might think. "Charlotte" was about growing up and how nothing in life ever stays the same. "Babe" is about overcoming prejudices, no matter how innate, and trusting in what you know to be good and true. When a character close to Babe dies, the result is not as wrenching and meaningful as Charlotte's death in "Charlotte's Web" but it still does the trick. "Babe" is beautiful in its simplicity.

Now I'm reviewing the 20th Anniversary Edition of Babe at the moment. The illustrations are soft fluffy pictures that are the closest I've ever seen pencil come to pastel. It seems to me that when you're picking out which edition of "Babe" to have in your home, you need to make a quick decision between the original and classic pen and inks of Mary Rayner or these new softy-softy pencilings of Maggie Kneen. I'm sure that had I grown up with the Rayner shots I'd be gung-ho about the original. As it stands, I hadn't any preconceived notions about the book when I picked it up. All I cared was that the newer edition not make the farmer and his wife look like the actors in the film. They don't, it's true, and Kneen's drawings have an entirely new take on the book. They make it very clear that the story takes place in the present day (Mrs. Hogget wears a sweatshirt and has a rather short and fashionable hairdo near the story's end). The farmer and his wife are both relatively young looking. Neither of these are flaws. Unfortunately, Kneen doesn't read into the text very clearly. The book goes on and on about how large Babe grows and how he almost rivals the sheep in size. In the book though he's still smaller than Fly and rather tiny to boot. There's none of those taut muscles the text expects us to see. On top of that, I can't get over the picture of Babe on the cover. Has anyone else noticed that his front legs don't seem to be drawn correctly? There are joints where joints should not be and his left trotter is mighty small. All in all, stick with the original pen and inks by Rayner. Not only do they match the tale but they also offer the far more exciting action sequences of Babe running, fighting dogs, and generally being an active protagonist. Kneen's Babe appears to prefer lying down and sitting. Tis the lesser of the two versions, no question.

Altogether, "Babe" is just the kind of story to bring reluctant readers and voracious ones together to the table. It has something for everyone and is a deeply loving story. Perhaps Dick King-Smith's best, and certainly his best known. And I highly recommend that if this title pleases you that you seek out his roughly five thousand other animal tales. He's a prolific writer and a good one.

Babe the Gallant Pig is about a pig that thinks he is a sheep dog, lives on a farm and gets entered in a sheep dog contest and amazes the crowd after he wins.

In the beginning, Babe the pig, as a baby, gets taken away from his mother. He gets taken to the fair for raising money. It's for a good cause and the farmer, Mr. Hogget, guesses the weight of this pig in a box and the next day he won the pig when the other farmers that were running the booth called him.

When the farmer got the pig home the farmer noticed the pig is a little different than a normal pig. Then the farmer gets to have more feelings for Babe. Babe meets a dog that he calls mom because she doesn't say her real name and her babies left her a short while after Babe arrived at the farm. The father dog's name is Rex. Rex is a dog that's an amazing sheepherder. Rex conflicts with Babe because Babe is a good sheepherder too.

Later the sheep are attacked by a group of dogs and Babe's friend, the wise sheep, was hurt by the dogs and died. Mr. Hogget thought it was Babe that killed the sheep but his wife stopped him from shooting Babe and told Mr. Hogget that Babe was the one that stopped the dogs from killing the rest of the sheep.

Later Mr. Hogget enters Babe into a sheep-herding contest and they go to the fairground. Rex talks to the sheep and they made a deal with Rex. Mr. Hogget walked out with Babe and everyone made fun of him, but Mr. Hogget wasn't embarrassed. Babe begins to get all the sheep rounded up in less than a minute and the entire crowd was awestruck and cheer extremely loud! Babe was the champion with a score of 100!

Mr. Hogget loved Babe ever since and Babe was another good family pet and got to sleep inside, instead of sleeping in the pig pins. Mr. Hogget and his wife treated Babe very good and Babe loved it. All and all I think it was a good book and should be read by all people that like these kinds of books. THE END!

Reluctant villain Morgan is a sympathetic bad guy, and Steel engineers the requisite romance between Ted and Fernanda, but this is thin fare.

Not bad, but not her best

As you're reading Ransom, you do get the feeling that yet again, D. Steel is trying to find some new magic to maintain her readership and capture their interest...give them reason to keep hanging on. Does she succeed? Not quite, but she doesn't fail entirely.
Ransom is one of the first times that I can think of (after reading all 60 of her books) that she attempts a bit more of a calculated and complex storyline- merging 3 into one. She does ok at this, the central story line is about a family who's near poverty after the father lost his millions in the stock market and committed suicide-leaving the mother and her 3 children on their own. And with all of that to handle, the change from living as millionaires to saving every penny and selling off all of their belongings; now they have to handle the threat that someone is out to committ a crime against the family, testing them further.
Of course, like any D. Steel book there's a bit of romance, but actually not too much compared to the suspense that she tries to create. She really does make an effort to make this book different from her others and she half-succeeds. Yes, I enjoyed the stories and the ending. I even liked the characters, but yet again, I just felt like something was missing. This book is not my favorite of hers, not up to par with her previous books Heartbeat, No Greater Love or Jewels. Perhaps in an effort to pump out a large number of books, she's sacraficed quality.

An thrilling tale about pirates, monsters, and treasures beyond your imagination

After a heroic act of taking down the evil King Septimus, Sebastian Darke is back! With his long-time buddy, Max the Buffalope, and the short (but mighty) warrior Cornelius. They are off to another grand adventure! And this time, out into the sea!

After being saved from a monster by a man named Adam, the trio is told that his sister, Leonora, knew that they were in danger. But these siblings have an agenda of their own. They are out to get the treasure that Sebastian and his friends are trying to find!

Attempting to escape from their pursuers, Sebastian and the gang hires a ship to find their way to the mysterious island that holds Captain Callinestra's world fortune. With fierce pirates, a long-lost loot, and mythical creatures, you should prepare for another fantastic quest with Sebastian Darke!

After reading the Prince of Fools, I knew I had to one day get my hands on the sequel. And I was not disappointed as Caveney delivered a non-stop and fun action story with enthusiastic characters, new and old!

The plot kept me hooked and I continued flipping the pages, dying to know what happened to the characters next. When you think things are going to be okay, another problem jumps out! You will be sitting there, biting your nails as you pray for the characters' safety.

I pitied Sebastian throughout this novel because he fell under an enchantment where he would only think of the evil Leonora. On his journey, he made acquaintances with the pretty female captain pirate, Jenna. I think she is pretty cool and I do hope she makes an appearance again in the next novel but for some reason I doubt so. Sebastian slowly but surely grew up some more after encountering plenty of obstacles in this expedition since the Prince of Fools. He is an odd character to have a story evolve around because of his personality and situation but I love how different he is compared to most male leads.

What I adore the most about the novel is how everything is like a classic hero story for kids. You have the protagonist with his steed and best man, going through deadly challenges to get to the treasure that was lost for hundreds of years. Except it is a read for teens instead of the youngsters.

I definitely recommend the Sebastian Darke series if you have not read it yet! It gives you a break from the usual supernatural/fantasy stuff that you generally find in YA fiction. I'm anxious for the third installment!

Rather than learning to blend in, Danny disengages from both worlds, rarely speaking and running his mind in circles with questions about how he might have kept his absent father from leaving the family. He decides to spend the summer in National City, hoping to get closer to his dad's roots and learn how to be "real" and stop feeling numb. Instead, he finds that, by the end of the summer, he has filled the void through unexpected friendship and love. In this first-rate exploration of self-identity, Danny's growth as a baseball pitcher becomes a metaphor for the conflicts he must overcome due to his biracial heritage. Dialogue written in a coarse street vernacular and interwoven with Spanish is awkward to read at first—like Danny, readers are made to feel like outsiders among the hard-edged kids of National City. But as the characters develop, their language starts to feel familiar and warm, and their subtle tenderness becomes more apparent. The author juggles his many plotlines well, and the portrayal of Danny’s friends and neighborhood is rich and lively. Where the story really lights up is in the baseball scenes, which sizzle like Danny’s fastball. A violent scene, left somewhat unresolved, is the catalyst for him to confront the truth about his father. Borderlands

One of the most crucial thematic moments in "Mexican WhiteBoy," Matt de la Peña's new novel about a half-white, half-Mexican teenager struggling with his identity, happens when the father of his best friend, Uno, discusses poverty: "It's people who wander into your city, Uno. They the only ones who could see your life for what it is. National City, boy. Ain't but a forgotten slice of America's finest city. And you know what's on the tip of all y'all's tongues? Each and every one of y'all?"

The word he is getting at is "money," or some variation thereof, and the setting for his sermon is San Diego County, one of America's many cultural conundrums, where well-to-do whites inhabit plush beachfront property just miles from the border with impoverished Tijuana. De la Peña explored poverty in his previous book, "Ball Don't Lie," but this time he probes deeper, suggesting that the forces that divide us are far more complicated than class and race combined. Instead, all Americans reside on a hazy border between confusion and self-realization.

Raised by his white mother but sent to live with his father's Mexican family for the summer, title character Danny is caught between two worlds and two identities. At his upscale prep school where he was cut from the baseball team - because, in spite of his powerful pitching arm, he tends to choke on the mound - he is a "lowly" Mexican. But here, in a poor Hispanic neighborhood, he's a white boy with a brilliant mind (though he rarely speaks it) and a bright future.

During his stay, Danny befriends Uno, whose father is black and whose mother is Mexican. Both boys long for their fathers. Danny's is supposedly in Mexico; Uno's is a few hours north in Oxnard. The two boys bond as they hustle other kids on the baseball field, wagering that Danny can strike them out, in order to raise money so Uno can go live with his father. From his relationship with his wisecracking cousin, Sophia (herself on the border between tomboy adolescence and full-fledged womanhood), to his clumsy courtship of a pretty Mexican girl, conspicuously and plausibly named Liberty, who barely speaks English (Danny only knows a few words of Spanish), Danny is a tried young man, defined differently by each encounter but unable to find a suitable definition for himself.

De la Peña's prose has the feel of Danny's pitches - swift, steady, and fierce on impact - and the story hurtles unflinchingly toward a fastball finish, with a chilling suicide attempt after Danny learns his father is not in Mexico, but in a nearby prison, and a final showdown with the star batter from his prep school's baseball team. The story ends with the end of summer, with new hopes on the horizon but nothing fully resolved. In that, De la Peña captures the bittersweet transience of youth. Everything lies ahead, and yet the heart yearns to hold on to the here and now.

"Mexican WhiteBoy" feels particularly relevant in a year when America has elected its first biracial president. While the book's title may at first sound like a playful take on an issue made quaint by performance artists and standup comedians, upon closer examination it speaks to the inherent contradictions of pinpointing race at a time when identity is anything but fixed. Like Danny's, the president-elect's narrative contains humble beginnings, an absent father, a star athlete, and a compassionate sense of responsibility to his family's sacrifices, which is often the seed of greatness. And like the latter, "Mexican WhiteBoy" paints a complex portrait of a new America, yet to be defined but impossible to dismiss.

Truly Absorbing

I am not a boy, I am not Mexican and I am no longer a teenager but I could relate to Danny. More than that I cared what happened to him. As I turned the pages I was angry with him, disconnected, in pain or feeling his triumphs. And that is just on Danny, what about Senior. I couldn't be farther from Senior when you compare our stats but when his words were on the page I would read and reread them feeling the need to absorb. I can't say enough about this book. Mexican White Boy is a brilliant piece of writing.

A great read

The great strength of the story is the relationship between Danny and Uno, two kids who start out as rivals and end up the best of friends. The author does an excellent job of telling each of their stories, of presenting them in a way that lets me understand the issues they face, even though I come from an entirely different background. The story is extremely entertaining and well-paced, often combining moments of laugh-out-loud comedy with traces of melancholy and even sadness. Whether you're a baseball fan or not, you'll enjoy the story of these two kids as they navigate the pitfalls of teenage life, cope with family issues, and listen to the preaching of Uno's hilarious (and at times insightful) father, Senior.

About the Author
Tony Crisp has had a long working relationship with dreams. In 1972 he wrote one of the earliest self-help books on dreams. In those years he also started one of the first human growth centers in the U.K., teaching people how to use dreams and the dream process for healing and personal growth. Since then three more of his books on dreams have been published, along with others on working with the dream process while awake, using spontaneous movement.

A previous version of Dream Dictionary has been translated into seven languages worldwide. Tony Crisp's insight into the dream process was so valued that he was London Broadcasting Company's dream therapist for seven years.

Better as a Real Book!

I ordered a digital copy of the Dream Dictionary for my Kindle. It is an OK dream dictionary, but, I didn't realize how impractical it would be to search through it while on the Kindle, since you are looking for dream symbols in alphabetical order, and there is no index by letter to aid the search. You just sort of have to guess where one letter ends and the next one begins, and it just doesn't work very well on the Kindle. This is one reference book that definitely works better as a real book!

Cam Jansen and her friend, Eric Shelton have a mystery to solve! They were looking for the perfect picture that would win them a prize in a photography contest. Who expected that they would get a picture of a U.F.O.!?!? But is it really a U.F.O.? Follow along with them while they figure out what's going on. You'll have a lot of fun.

Here is what my 7-years old has to say about the book.

Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the U.F.O. by David A. Adler is a story about how Cam Jansen and her friend Eric Shelton solved mystery of U.F.O. In a cold afternoon before a junior photography contest Cam Jansen helped Eric to shoot photographs, which must be from real life, according to the contest rule. They came across Neptune, a missing kitten and saved her from the tree. Eric shot a picture of Neptune eating somebody's groceries. When they went to investigate a mysterious U.F.O. spotted by others, they discovered the U.F.O. was actually balloons hooked up to flashlights and creatures from outer space were staged by Bobby, Cindy and Steven to win a prize. But, in a rush, Bobby's car crashed his own camera and film (too bad!) while chasing Neptune. Finally, Neptune's photo won an honorable mention on TV!

If you are interested in mysteries, this book makes you feel you are in it. An excellent book for readers in second grade or older.

You have to love Cam Jansen. When you're a kid, you read all of these stories about magic powers, mystery, and adventure. But everyone tells you magic can't exist. Cam Jansen manages to solve every case without the use of magic... she's a real girl. That's what makes her special and what makes you want to read more and more. She lives her life and has friends just like everyone else. Cam Jansen is a real kid superhero, and the thought that a person like her could actually exist... makes her the best kid detective ever! Kids can really associate themselves with Cam and her friends. Our family loves Cam Jansen!

Steel's fifty-first novel has all the elements her fans crave--wealthy characters, lavish settings, and an opulent lifestyle. In December of 1974, Kate receives the quintessential dreaded phone call: her husband Joe's plane exploded, and no one survived. She is assailed with memories, beginning with the day they met some 33 years before at a debutante ball. Kate was only 17 but seemed much older as she was accustomed to such settings, while Joe at 29 was uncomfortable and only came at the request of his friend, Charles Lindbergh. Nonetheless, there is an instant rapport between them, and they exchange letters while Kate attends Radcliffe College. They realize that they're falling in love but restrain from commitment when WWII erupts and Joe is sent to England as a flying ace. When Joe comes back to the States to receive a medal, they consummate their love, but Joe is reluctant to get engaged. And so it goes. Joe is obsessed with flying and establishing his airline company, inducing a frustrated Kate to marry someone else, but Joe remains the love of her life and, well, there are no surprises here. It's a typical Steel soap opera that seems, oddly, to take the form of a male fantasy in which the woman is totally subservient to her macho flying man's needs and desires. Patty Engelmann

I can no longer feel Danielle's Passion for writing

A friend who was moving to another country gave me a whole bunch of Danielle Steel books. I had already read a few of her books, and they were brilliant, so couldn't wait to get started on the ones I was given. This one was utter disappointment, I am still reeling! It was written so badly. Several times in the book, I started to believe Danielle Steel had hired a very amateur ghost writer and just passed the book off in her name - because this is not her style. She writes completely different to this. I just can't describe how badly it's written. The choice of words and sentence structure are what you would expect from a kindergarten student. There is hardly any plot to the story - it's just a constant between: He leaves her, he comes back, he leaves her again, he comes back, he leaves her again, he comes back. There are hardly any scenes which allow me to like the characters - the whole thing is mostly just summary. You can feel Danielle's passion and love for writing in her earlier work - but not this one. I wonder if fame or money has now become her motivation. Or perhaps she signed a contract to produce a certain number of books, and just wrote absolute rubbish to fill the order. If Danielle Steel's name was not behind this book, it would NEVER have been accepted by an agent or publisher. It breaks every rule that writers are taught to obey in order to even be considered by an agent. I really can't believe I wasted my life trying to get through this nonsense. This book is an absolute insult to writers who are struggling to get published.

A Sunday morning in Maine, the one day of the week he was home from the logging camp and didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn. He was wrapped in his mother's handmade comforters. He so badly just wanted to continue sleeping. A dream kept intruding, an insistent, irritating buzz in his subconscious. A woman with dark hair, dressed in a white robe, standing on a beach. Looking at him. Her mouth was moving, saying something, but he heard nothing. There was something wrong about the place though. The shadows, the water. All wrong.

He focused on her lips and he knew he had tasted them many times. They were thin and pale, her face angular. He had known her--

"Get up."

He didn't hear as much as knew that's what she was yelling at him.

"Get up."

Turcotte didn't want to. He could never remember feeling as secure and comfortable as he did right now. He'd been so tired, he knew that, and however long he had rested, it wasn't near enough.

"I need you."

She had saved him; he knew that, although he could not recall details. Beyond that, he knew they had done much together, and been many places. And he had loved her fiercely. That emotion roared through him, shaking him out of his stupor.

Turcotte opened his eyes but all he could see was white. He blinked, feeling something wet on his face. He shook his head, slowly realizing it was snow on his skin. Panicking, he sat up abruptly, six inches of snow falling off the upper half of his body.

He looked about. Open air directly in front. Rock behind.

He was flanked by bodies. Frozen solid. One dressed in a black robe with silver fringe. Another in ancient leather armor. And a third in early-twentieth-century climbing gear--Sandy Irvine, who had disappeared in 1924 while attempting to summit with George Mallory. With a smile frozen forever on his face. That shook Turcotte. He knew he'd have died with a smile on his face also if he hadn't woken. He could feel the cold throughout his body now. It was excruciatingly painful as his nerve endings came awake.

He looked down and could just make out the sword across his knees.

Excalibur.

The key to the Master Guardian that he had freed from its scabbard, activating it.

Reality came rushing back to him. Yakov had to be in the mothership with the Master Guardian. Duncan was missing. And he was high on Mount Everest.

Next to the sword was a SATPhone, its surface frozen and covered with ice. With stiff hands he reached out and picked up the phone, shoving it inside his parka. The cold made even the slightest act extremely difficult.

Mike Turcotte forced himself to get to his feet, Excalibur gripped tightly in his right hand, an ice ax in his left. He knew he had passed the peak of power the amphetamines had given him and that the oxygen richness of the blood doping was fading. How long had he sat there, he wondered. It couldn't have been too long because he still had some feeling in his hands and feet. He checked his mask, but there was no oxygen flowing. The tank on his back had to be empty by now.

He knew, as surely as he could feel the sword in his hands, that he could not make his way along the ledge or down the mountain in the same manner he had climbed up. He glanced down once more at the three bodies frozen next to him. They had known the same thing. And they had never woken from whatever their last pleasant dreams had been.

He closed his eyes and tried to force his oxygen-starved brain to think through the overwhelming exhaustion and pain. He'd trained in high altitude and the cold many times in his Special Forces career and he tried to recall what he had learned. He was higher than he had ever been. His instructors had beaten one thing into him about working in the mountains--gravity could be your friend or your enemy, depending on which direction you were heading and how fast. He considered those words of wisdom. He needed to go down, and do it quickly. He looked below at the Kanshung Face on the north side of Everest. Gravity could be his friend, but one slip and he would fall for a very, very long time.

There was one option. In a way Turcotte was glad he couldn't really think it through and figure the odds of success, because he had no doubt they would be very low.

He hooked the ice ax onto his harness and grabbed the nylon strap attached to the front of it. He clipped the snap link on the end of the strap to the safety rope. He paused for a moment, amazed that he had succeeded against the other groups that had raced to this spot to try to claim the sword. The corrupt SEALs from Aspasia's Shadow; the Chinese and the Ones Who Wait, sent by Artad; and his climbing partner and former watcher, Professor Mualama, who had been corrupted by a Swarm tentacle--all were now dead, their bodies scattered about the mountain.

Turcotte took the end of the rope, where the one SEAL had cut it, and laboriously tried to make a knot, thick enough so that it would not fit through the snap link. It took him several attempts and almost ten minutes of work before he achieved this simple task.

Taking the ice ax in his free hand again, Turcotte put his back to the mountain and faced outward, staring out over the Himalayas below him. It was dark, dawn still hours off. The stars glittered overhead and the moon was low to the west, its beams reflecting off the snow-covered peaks. Other than the nearby bodies, there was no sign of mankind as far as he could see. The silence was overwhelming, not even the wind, which had been his constant companion on his way up the mountain, was blowing. It was the most peaceful scene Turcotte had ever witnessed. It was serene and it was deadly.

Turcotte jumped outward with all his might.

The first piece of climbing protection--a piton--already weakened by Mualama's fall, tore free of the mountain. Like stitching being ripped apart, the rope popped succeeding pieces of protection from their perch and Turcotte fell, swinging to the west as each piece held for just a moment, the effect jarring him slightly and curving his trajectory before free-falling again. His climbing harness dug into his thighs and waist, but the pain was barely noticeable.

Turcotte slammed against the side of Everest, on the sheer Kanshung Face, still falling, still being swung to the west. The impact knocked what little breath he had out of his lungs and he gasped for air. He came to a halt for a moment as a piton held for a few seconds. He twisted and looked about, mouth open, lungs straining. The northwest ridge was twenty meters away. So close, yet so out of reach.

Then Turcotte dropped abruptly as the next piton holding him pulled free. The pendulum effect swung him toward the ridge and he reached the last piece of protection, where the ridge met the face. It held for the slightest of moments. Enough for Turcotte to get his bearings--he was less than two meters from the ridge. Very close, yet still too far. He braced his feet against the Kanshung Face and as the last piton gave way, he pushed off, leaping to the side, swinging his ice ax, arm fully extended.

The tip of the ax caught for a moment in the ice at the very edge of the ridge, holding him in place as the rope hurtled by. Then the ax gave way and he slid, desperately slamming it at the ridge time and time again. It caught once more and he hung there, dangling from the ax. He twisted his body to face the rock.

Dully, he realized the rope would now be heading down and when it reached its fullest extension, the weight would pull him off the mountain and he would follow the equipment to his death.

Maintaining a one-hand grip on the ax handle, most of his weight on the strap from it stretched taut around his wrist, with the other hand he swung Excalibur. The blade severed the rope a second before it was fully extended. Turcotte followed through the swing and jabbed Excalibur at the ice and rock of the ridgeline. The sword cut through the ice and into the rock, penetrating a few inches. Using the leverage of sword and ice ax, Turcotte slowly maneuvered himself off the sheer face and onto the ridge. He pulled the sword out and held it against his chest.

He rolled onto the almost knife edge of the ridge and lay on his back, gasping for air and staring up at the stars. Only twenty-nine thousand feet to go.

THE GULF OF MEXICO

Three hundred feet under the water, an undersea habitat was joined to the leg of an abandoned oil rig platform. Inside the habitat, strapped to a steel gurney, was Lisa Duncan, former presidential science adviser and the one who had initiated the investigation into Majestic-12 and Area 51. She'd been kidnapped from Area 51 and brought here where she met Dr. Garlin, who claimed to be a member of a new Majestic-12 committee. This had occurred after it was discovered that Lisa was not who she appeared to be. Who she really was, however, remained a mystery. While under the control of Aspasia's Shadow she had partaken of the Grail, and was now immortal, something that was doing her little good in her present predicament.

She was a slender, dark-haired woman, covered with a white robe. On her head was a crown made of three bands of metal, an ancient artifact that had been carried out of Egypt by the high priest during the Exodus. Leads from the crown went to an object on a gurney next to her, something else that had been carried across the desert millennia ago: the Ark of the Covenant.

The Ark was three feet high and wide by four feet long. Gold plating covered the surface. On the open lid were two sphinxlike objects with glowing red eyes. The wires from the crown ran into the inner lid of the Ark. A thin, previously hidden screen had been pulled down, revealing a slightly curving, black surface. Just below it was a series of two dozen small hexagonal buttons ...

And Nothing But...

I have been following this series along for some time now, this being the seventh volume. It is unashamedly an alien invasion, 'the truth is out there,' kind of story that makes no excuses for itself. As a result, the series has always managed to be a pleasant read even when the plot occasionally degenerates into a bit of paranoid silliness. After all, that is what makes this genre click. If a paranoid alien plot story is not what you want, consider yourself warned.
For most of the volumes, this one included, the primary secret enemy is an alien race called the Airlia. They have been on the earth for some 10,000 years, happily manipulating human events to suit their own needs. In fact, it turns out that there are two groups of Airlia in conflict with each other. Moreover, as 'The Truth' reveals there are even more fish in the stew than the Airlia and their minions. It seems that every time this series uncovers an artifact - the Ark, the Grail, Excalibur, there is another alien race hiding underneath of it.
In this final volume, the series 'hero,' Mike Turcotte, and his band of cohorts must rush about, cleaning up loose ends, solving mysteries, and saving the Earth. Rushing about is a bit of an understatement, as Mike starts out on the top of Mount Everest, jumping to safety, and ends on Mars with a final struggle to stop the Airlia (and others) from phoning home and asking for help. In between are the obligatory stops to Area 51, Stonehenge, and the Gulf of Mexico. Yes, 'The Truth' does, grudgingly, part with the truth - the last piece of the puzzle. But this is an anti-climax after all the thundering action that goes before.
In something this action oriented, it would be foolish to expect a lot of character development. In fact, Doherty spends the time to create good two-dimensional characters, and that is much more than many other authors in this genre feel obliged to provide. The only thing that has ever really irritated me about this series is that Doherty's narrative has a habit of jumping around in space and time. I have a reasonable tolerance for the chaos of a flashback driven narrative, but after seven volumes, this particular plot device wears a bit thin. Be warned that this series needs to be read in order it is going to make a lot of sense. Fortunately, it is well written enough to be enjoyable throughout.

Buckle up!

Strap yourself in before you start reading this book! The action develops quickly and keeps at a furied pace all the way through. All the blanks are filled in as you learn "The Truth".
The author ties it all together pretty well. I liked the book, it is a good read and it was a nice ending to the series.

A finale that does not disappoint!

I have been reading the series from the start and the final chapter does a very nice jobe of tying it all up. It is a book that seems to move at a incredible paces. You never get bogged down in an overly long chapter with so many events happening at once in the story. I very much enjoyed the explainations of all the mysteries laid throughout the series. And the somewhat open ended finish leaves room for Mr. Doherty to revisit the series again. Personally, I was ready for a final resolution and Mr. Doherty did not disappoint.
