How Not to Be Popular, by Jennifer Ziegler

Maggie Dempsey is tired of moving all over the country. Her parents are second-generation hippies who uproot her every year or so to move to a new city. When Maggie was younger, she thought it was fun and adventurous. Now that she’s a teenager, she hates it. When she moved after her freshman year, she left behind good friends, a great school, and a real feeling of belonging. When she moved her sophomore year, she left behind a boyfriend, too. Now that they’ve moved to Austin, she knows better. She’s not going to make friends. She’s not going to fit in. Anything to prevent her from liking this new place and them from liking her. Only . . . things don’t go exactly as planned.

Tip: Popular girls never go anywhere by themselves. Thus, it must also stand to reason that the unpopular are always alone.

First days of school always make me feel extra alive. My senses just seem magically improved. It’s like I can fully live in the moment and simultaneously float along beside myself, carefully recording everything for later viewing. And this, I know, will become a treasured memory. The kind that replays in full color and digital surround sound, with credits rolling at the end. This will be the day I finally figure out my life. The day I overcome the burden of being a Traveling Dempsey. Today I begin Operation Avoid Friends (OAF?).

Knowing I have nothing to lose this time around makes me feel better about the whole situation. To tell the truth, I’m even a little excited about it.

Of course, this is the first day of school only for me. Everyone else has been here for over two weeks. That’s another thing about my parents: they can’t be on time for anything. First they took their own sweet hippie time making it to Austin; then yesterday they had the entire day to officially enroll me at Lakewood High, but when did we walk in the door? At a quarter to five. The registrar was just about to shut down her computers—something she reminded us of several times as she raced through the enrollment process. Of course Les and Rosie didn’t seem to notice. As Les slowly filled out forms in his ornate handwriting, the lady kept tapping her car keys against her desk. But Rosie just hummed along with the rhythm.

So here I am, getting my first glimpse of Lakewood’s teen population. The students don’t look all that different from Portland kids. Or Seattle or Berkeley or Boulder or Madison or Santa Fe kids, for that matter. All the typical groupings are here. This is my tenth high school, so as you can imagine, I’ve gotten really good at figuring out the cliques and the power rankings, just by noticing the way kids dress and act.

Hanging at the edge of the parking lot, under a cloud of cigarette smoke, are the Thugs, aka Burnouts, Stoners, or Fry-Boys. Rockers and Skaters are subsets of this group, and they overlap like Venn diagrams for partying purposes. Trevor was a part of this group in Portland; shaggy-haired Skaters were the dominant breed there, but it’s obviously different in Austin. Here they seem to be of skinnier, squirrelier stock and they aren’t surrounded by a gaggle of admiring girls.

Sitting at a couple of picnic tables on the front lawn are the Brains. Or Nerds, Honor Roll Dweebs, Debate Club Dorks, or Goobers. Judging by all the big black instrument cases, I’d say most of them take band, which is typical. At other schools I’ve learned that almost all superbrain students take band or orchestra, but not all band or orchestra students are superbrains. Band as phylum, Brains as genus.

Swarming around a stone wall that separates the parking lot from the school is what I guess to be the art and/or theater crowd. A guy in camo pants and a T-shirt with something ironic on it (I’m too far away to read it) is reenacting some outrageous sketch with a bad British accent. Meanwhile his peers cheer him on. A Goth couple in the front is really cracking up, which makes me smile. It’s always funny to see Goths laugh.

And finally, scattered about the covered walkway leading to the school’s front doors are the heads of the high school ecosystem. This category differs slightly from school to school, but usually it includes perfect poser types with an overabundance of money and power. In this case, preppy jocks appear to be the ruling class—mainly guys with football-player builds, spiky flattop hairdos, and urban designer clothes.

There are a few pretty girls sprinkled in with them, but mainly as accessories. I haven’t yet spotted the school’s ruling females, the crowd I typically try to integrate with.

Being part of the power clique means you’re auto- matically protected to a degree. You get access to the best clubs and parties and sometimes have more privileges at school. Everything is just easier. I’ve never made top tier, but I’ve almost always been part of that scene—until this time, that is. Under the rules of my antipopularity plan, I can’t associate with any friendworthy people. Instead I’m going to be one of those weird outsider types—the ones who are always by themselves and give off lots of keep-away vibes. The kind of person no one notices after a while.

“Hey! New girl!” One of the alpha guys calls out to me. He’s cute. Real cute, in fact. Dark blond hair, strong jaw, dimples. I know I’m trying to avoid people, but this guy is so gorgeous it’s hard to look away. “Where’re you from?” he drawls, adding extra emphasis to “you.”

I hear my response in my head. All over the place. It’s a struggle, but I don’t let it out. Instead I tear my gaze off him and fiddle with my messenger bag, hoping he’ll lose interest. Just being near a guy reminds me of Trevor.

“Hey, you! I’m talking to you!” He raises his voice, and out of the corner of my eye, I notice that his pals all turn their heads simultaneously. Even a couple of passersby slow down to watch.

I wish he’d just declare me a weirdo and move on, but instead he hops down off his perch and walks up next to me. His cohorts pivot around, their faces gleaming expectantly.

“Didn’t you hear me?” the guy asks. He leans forward, hovering his face over mine as if to give the best possible view of his perfect cheekbones and navel-sized dimples.

A warm sensation trickles through me—probably hormones. This is the type of guy girls embarrass themselves for, a guy who could possibly help me get over Trevor… but even on the bizarro chance we hooked up (which isn’t likely), who would help me get over him when we move in four months?

As I stand there, sifting through my jumbled thoughts, the guy’s face slowly flattens. “Man, what’s wrong with you?” he asks. “Just trying to be friendly here.”

“Blow her off, Miles,” calls out one of his guy pals. “She’s probably got someone else giving it to her.” Denied any entertainment, the crowd turns back toward the other approaching students.

By TeensReadToo
A lot of young adult books deal with regular teenagers trying to fit in. HOW NOT TO BE POPULAR, however, is the exact opposite.

Maggie Dempsey can't ever remember being rooted down in one place. Her mother and father are constantly moving, dragging Maggie along with them. But she's getting sick of it. She's emotionally drained from leaving her good friends over and over again.

So when she packs up and moves to Austin, she has a plan. She's going to become a social pariah. She'll throw together outrageous outfits and talk to all the wrong people. What's the point of making friends and getting hurt again if she's going to be leaving in three months anyways?

But things aren't as easy as she thought they would be.

I loved this book. I was right next to Maggie the entire time, rooting for her as she tried to find herself and feeling her pain as she realized her mistakes. I wish I had read this a few years ago; it teaches a lesson that all teenagers should learn and know. Being you is one of the most important rules to follow.

HOW NOT TO BE POPULAR is definitely one of the most interesting books I've read this year. Complete with comical situations and moral lessons, it's one I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

The truth about being a loser....
By Jenny
Sugar-Mags Dempsey aka Maggie has ultraliberal parents. They wander carelessly across the U.S. settling down only for months at a time before packing up and leaving.

Except the move from Portland where Maggie's serious boyfriend, Trevor remains, is the final straw. After a week of being a way Trevor decides to break it off with Maggie and this sets in motion a most conniving plan. To be unpopular.

Whatever it is, talking about her vagina, sitting with the losers, owning a Star Trek backpack Maggie will do it just to avoid making friends, just to avoid feeling hurt when the inevitable move comes.

Despite her plans though something happens that makes Maggie sadder than ever though...

-------------
Cute book. I liked it a lot because of the laugh out loud funny extremes Maggie takes to be unpopular. The book is dotted with eccentric, unforgettable characters and a true sense of high school.

I was kind of peeved along the way at Maggie for being so mean about the people who took her in. However, I think every feeling Maggie had was genuinely how a girl in high school would have felt about it all. This book is surprisingly deep, not all shallow and about cliques and it's also fun.

I recommend it.

Fun, quick read
By askmonkey
This novel is about a teenage girl named Maggie (real name: Sugar Magnolia) whose hippie parents don't like to live in one place for very long. As a result, Maggie is moving to yet another new town and is tired of leaving and eventually losing her friends. So, she hatches up a plan to be unpopular and thus not make any friends at all, but in the end (I don't think this is a spoiler for anyone) she does.

As a disclaimer, I have to say that I am a fan of adult chick lit, but have a harder time with YA chick lit, mostly because I was not as boy crazy as most of the teenage main characters in this genre. So, in the beginning, I really disliked this book. The main character initially comes across as whiny and snobby--every parent's nightmare of what their teenager will turn into. But after the first few chapters, the humor of her situation begins to seep through. She obviously loves her flighty parents who are embarrassingly funny and begins to realize how shallow she used to be. Eventually she begins to empathize with her new dorky friends (who sound like the type of people I would have hung around in high school). The novel is obviously not intended to be great literature, but rather a fun, quick read and I think it served its purpose pretty well. While I was reading, I could definitely see this novel spinning off into a teen chick movie in the vein of "Mean Girls", starring any of the popular teen actresses of the moment.

This is a very clever book that incorporates mystery writing with nursery rhyme characters. My five year old loves to read the book. But as an adult, I appreciated the humor and all the nursery rhyme references. If you like Minnie and Moo and Nate the Great, you'll enjoy this book too. I only wish this book was not out of print.

From Publishers Weekly
Retired art thief Michael St. Pierre (star of Doetsch's debut The Thieves of Heaven) tests the limits of his skills and of reader credulity as he breaks into... the Kremlin. It's been a year since Michael's beloved wife, Mary, died and he's still grieving when a good friend makes a dying wish: Michael must steal a painting from a shady Parisian dealer, then destroy it before it falls into the hands of Julian Zivera, an evil and powerful lunatic. Just when Michael believes the task is completed, Zivera enters the picture and presents Michael with a choice: either Michael will break into the vaults of the Russian capitol and steal a gold box that is said to contain the secret to eternal life, or Zivera will kill Michael's long-lost biological father. Michael chooses door number one and enlists his widowed sister-in-law, Susan, and ex-cop buddy, Paul, to help. Over 400 pages the trio endures so many crosses (double, triple, you name it) and close calls that one wishes the plot's destruction were part of Michael's bargain, but Doetsch injects a welcome lightness throughout. Addictive author
By Lorie Patterson
What an awe inspiring journey fom my newest favorite author. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. Richard Doetsch is an incredibly visual author. I could picture each scene in my head like I was right there with the characters living each moment of this addictive thriller. Hollywood should take hold of this author(Who by the way is better looking than any Hollywood star!!)and make him and his lead character Michael St. Pierre into a modern day James Bond series. Fast paced and truly rich with detail I loved this book!! Let's hope there will be more in the series. A real treat.

entertaining thriller
By A Customer
In Geneva, Switzerland, former art thief Michael St. Pierre knows he would do anything for Genevieve, who has been there for him ever since his beloved wife Mary died last year. So when she asks a favor of him, he gives her an unequivocal yes before knowing what she needs. She explains she is being hunted by her son Julian who demands she tell him the secret of a painting by an obscure artist. She owns the work that is being sold at a black market gallery, but does not want it back; she wants it destroyed. Genevieve gives Michael a week to decide if he will perform her request.

Three days later, he calls her to tell her no as the mission is impossible only to learn she is dead. Owing her, Michael completes what turned out to be her death bed request. However, malevolent raging maniac Julian Zivera claims Michael owes him. He demands the thief break into the Kremlin to steal a gold box that allegedly contains the eternal life formula buried in the most buried vault. If he fails to accomplish the impossible mission, his biological father who he never met will die.

This exciting sequel to THE THIEVES OF HEAVEN (not reviewed) is an entertaining thriller as Michael and two buddies conduct the dangerous quest in which betrayals seem to occur on every page and close shaves that Gillette would envy even more so. The story line is over the Urals, but thriller fans will enjoy anyway because Michael Doetsch never makes his tale into the universal big crunch; instead there is a comic book like forth to the fun caper.

Middle book in series
By Cheryl Stout
I ended up reading Doetsch's three books in this series out of order. Usually that would have been a no-go for me but in this case it was alright. Each of the three books is strong enough on its own to be a stand-alone (but would be better read in the order meant to be read).

"The Thieves of Faith" is nonstop action from page one. Doetsch has a way with character development and great descriptive passages that allows you to visualize each scene and really sit back and enjoy the journeys he takes you on. I like the characters he has introduced us to in this series and feel like I know them (or at least would like to). He also has a knack for coming up with unusual locales for the settings of his novels. Who would have imagined the Kremlin? Holy Cold War!

The other two books in this series are great, also - The Thieves of Heaven and The Thieves of Darkness. I especially liked "The Thieves of Darkness", the third book in the series. Doetsch's writing just seems to get more and more polished.

The Other Half of My Heart, by Sundee T. Frazier

The story of biracial twin sisters—one black, one white—and the summer that tests their strong bond, from the author of Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award-winner Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in It.

When Minerva and Keira King were born, they made headlines: Keira is black like Mama, but Minni is white like Daddy. Together the family might look like part of a chessboard row, but they are first and foremost the close-knit Kings. Then Grandmother Johnson calls, to invite the twins down South to compete for the title of Miss Black Pearl Preteen of America.
Minni dreads the spotlight, but Keira assures her that together they'll get through their stay with Grandmother Johnson. But when their grandmother's bias against Keira reveals itself, Keira pulls away from her twin. Minni has always believed that no matter how different she and Keira are, they share a deep bond of the heart. Now she'll find out whether that’s really true.

"One luminous pearl of a sister story."--RITA WILLIAMS-GARCIA, author of the Newbery Honor Award-winner One Crazy Summer

Winner of the Skipping Stone Honor Award

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6 Twins Keira and Minni, 11, are used to the funny looks their chessboard family receives: Keira takes after their black mother and Minni resembles their white father. In spite of differences in appearance and personality, the girls share a bond that they are convinced is unbreakable. When their maternal grandmother invites them to fly from their coastal Washington town to North Carolina and enroll in the Miss Black Pearl of America Program, their mother is hesitant, but finally agrees. Keira is ecstatic to enter, but introverted Minni is not happy. Her reservations seem well founded when they arrive: Grandmother Johnson is as persnickety as ever, and the program's president questions whether Minni qualifies to participate in an event for black girls. Minni learns what it feels like to be the odd person out in terms of appearance, and Keira is resentful that, up until now, Minni really hasn't understood what her sister was going through in their white Seattle suburb. The girls mature and learn a few things about their grandmother's struggle to be seen as an equal by the white community. As in Brendan Buckley's Universe and Everything in It (Delacorte, 2007), Frazier addresses issues faced by mixed-race children with a grace and humor that keep her from being pedantic. The story is enjoyable in its own right, but will also encourage readers to rethink racial boundaries and what it means to be black or white in America. Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The idea of being a twin has built-in appeal—a sibling who has almost identical experiences of the world can be an instant BFF. That ideal informs the lives of sisters Minni and Keira, but the differences between the biracial siblings may be vaster than they’d like to think, because Minni’s coloring is white like their father’s, while Keira’s is black like their mother’s. During the summer when the girls turn 11, awareness of how they’re perceived is driven home when a storekeeper in their home state of Washington has a widely disparate reaction to the girls’ browsing through fancy dresses. Later, when the girls visit their prickly maternal grandmother in North Carolina and compete in a beauty contest for African Americans, Minni feels she is the focus of skeptical attention. Not only does Frazier raise questions worth pondering but her ability to round out each character, looking past easy explanations for attitude, is impressive. She also leavens the whole with easy humor and builds suspense over the pageant itself. Will the talented and outgoing Keira win the prize? Will Minni be able to overcome her shyness and shine? A novel with a great deal of heart indeed, from the winner of the John Steptoe New Talent Award for Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in It (2007). Grades 4-6. --Karen Cruze

Review
"Funny and deeply affecting, this novel by the Steptoe Award winner for Brendan Buckley's Universe and Everything in It (2007) revisits the still largely unexplored world of multiracial heritage...Frazier highlights the contradictions, absurdities, humor and pain that accompany life as a mixed-race tween. Never didactic, this is the richest portrait of multiracial identity and family since Virginia Hamilton's 1976 novel Arilla Sun Down. An outstanding achievement."

My new favorite book!
By A Customer
The Other Half of My Heart is now one of my favorite books in the entire world!!!!
I finished reading it four days after I received it for my 12th birthday. I recommend it for ages 8 and up and especially for sisters. It is about the pleasures and hardships of biracial twins, Minni and Kiera, and how Minni learns that standing up for and doing what is right takes courage, especially when, if you don't act, it may hurt someone you love.

The truth be told
By LaTasha
My children are biracial and I felt this book would do good for my daughter and comment she was faced with recently in school. The warmness that the twins have between one another is so nice to read. Understanding that people biracial or not go through things and can overcome what ever happens their way with pride and grace. I hope my daughter takes all that is good from this book and shares it with others.

Little Details
By Raleigh
While I liked the overall spirit and wisdom of the book, there were little details that were too off-putting to ignore. The relationship between the twins was realistic and touching. The handling of each twin's unique position was also well done. However,a pagent? Really? There was no other format to explore these themes of identity, acceptance, family bonds, etc? Eleven year olds in pagents? Really? If their mother was such a strong black woman, she would never have allowed such a thing to happen.
The twins travel to Raleigh, NC to visit their black grandmother who has entered them in the Miss Black Pearl pagent. The author's negative description of Raleigh was rather a shock. Raleigh is a beautiful, historical, gem of the south. The girls' disrespectful attitude toward their grandmother was not amusing. When they put something in her food that could potentially be harmful, that was going too far. I would never use a book where the characters thought that was a cute prank. Plus, I can't imagine doing that to my grandmother no matter what I thought of her.
There is the part where the announcer welcomes everyone to the 9th annual pagent. The girls' mother was in the pagent when she was a girl, and she's in her 30's, so how could it be the 9th pagent?
The grandmother's grandmother lived in Durham and worked as a housekeeper in Raleigh. The book mentions it's a 30 minute bus ride. Most unlikely. It was all those little details that kept me from thinking the book was outstanding. Those details should have been picked up on by an editor.
There are a lot of authors using 11 year olds. As a middle school teacher for many years, I strongly doubt that 11 year olds could do all of this or have the experiences these girls have had. The book would have been much more believable had the girls been 12 or 13.
Several historical black figures such as Bessie Coleman and Madame C.J. Walker were mentioned. It would have been a good idea to include details about those people at the end of the book. This book has potential, but it wasn't met.
I would recommend this book to girls as a good read, but I would want to discuss it with them when they finished.

In a Dark Season, by Vicki Lane

In a North Carolina winter, new vistas appear through the bare trees. For Elizabeth Goodweather of Full Circle Farm, still a newcomer after more than twenty years, one terrible glimpse ignites a mystery that reaches back years into these hills, drawing together dozens of seemingly unconnected lives. Elizabeth sees a frail old woman on a high porch where dolls hang by twine. When the woman jumps, and Elizabeth reacts, there is no turning back.

Nola Barrett’s ancient, sprawling house is spewing a dark past: of depravity, scandal and murder. Her land is at the center of multiple mysteries, ranging from a suspicious death to the brutal rape of a young woman to the legend of a handsome youth hanged for murder. But with Nola recovering from her self-inflicted wounds, Elizabeth has inherited her mad, violent drama—while a killer has a perfect view of it all.…

From Publishers Weekly
North Carolina amateur sleuth Elizabeth Goodweather, 54, returns after Old Wounds uneasy about her relationship with Phillip, a former cop and the best friend of her deceased husband. First on her agenda: facing the attempted suicide of her friend Nola, ten years her senior. As Nola becomes increasingly unresponsive during her recovery, Elizabeth remains convinced that someone may be deliberately harming Nola in order to precipitate the sale of Nola's homestead on Gudger's Stand, a property steeped with secrets of the past. Lane craftily deepens the swiftly-moving plot with liberal sprinklings of Carolina folklore.

I love Vicki Lane's books. They make me feel as if I know the Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia area. I love the way she uses the dialect without putting down the people speaking it. She creates characters you care about.

outstanding ...
By Pat
This is the fourth book by this author and she only keeps improving. There are many twists and turns in this novel that keeps you wondering which way it's going to go ... she is one of the few authors that keeps me guessing til the very end. Her characters are very real, the description of the NC mountains is right on, and is the mountain dialect. She is a wonderful storyteller who has you thinking about this book long after you're done with it. I can hardly wait for her next book.

fabulous whodunit
By A Customer
Driving past the spooky house Elizabeth Goodweather, owner of the Full Circle Far, sees a woman about to commit suicide. She is horrified when she realizes this is her new friend Nola Barrett, who seemed perfectly stable just a few days ago. She tries to reason with Nola while waiting for authorities to arrive, but the woman leaps anyway. Fortunately Nola is not seriously injured although she is taken to the hospital. Her niece Tracy arrives to sell Nola's home so the money can be used to place her in a nursing facility.

Elizabeth is a bit suspicious because she never heard Nola saying she had any living relatives. Whenever she visits Nola at the home, her friend does not seem lucid until she starts babbling in rhyme and her words have meaning. While Elizabeth tries to figure out what is going on, Nola's pastor commits suicide for a long ago sin. These events tie back to a gang rape of an innocent young woman who wrote to the interested sheriff; but her letter was stolen so he has no way to contact her. In a silo, the bones of a man is found. Elizabeth knows these seemingly unlinked events are tied together, but not how while a cold killer prepares to add her to the list.

Vickie Lane writes a fabulous whodunit that contains various crimes in the past like when a young man is hanged for a murder he did not commit. The story line is vivid with the past imparting clues Elizabeth finds in her present activities. This technique cleverly works absorbing the audience into wondering what the heroine will find next. Although the amateur sleuth paradox is evident, fans will appreciate IN A DARK SEASON as this juicy mystery has several subplots that provide the motive to the present crimes.

This book is my favorite
By A Customer
I recommend this book to readers of all ages that are crazed Star Wars fans. If you don't know what Shadows of the Empire is, it is the story in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
It is mainly about saving Han Solo. I recommend this because each and every paragraph is full of details. My favorite part is where Luke and the rogue sqadron try to hijack a cargo plane containing special computer information. Tring to hijack it, it takes off and they follow it. Then out of nowhere it has a special defense system, half of the rogue sqadron was blown to space dust. That was the high action part. It even tells the action part from two points of view, Luke and the captains.
Again this is a great book for readers of all ages!

The Best Star Wars Book.. Without A Shadow Of A Doubt
By A Customer
I thought that the Shadows Of The Empire by Steve Perry was the best Star Wars book ever written! It is about Prince Xizor (the head of an evil organization called "Black Sun" and Darth Vader. Vader sent's out plans for Luke Skywalker to be captured alive so he can turn him to the dark side, and Xizor send's out plans to kill him because of revenge from Darth Vader (read the book and find out what revenge)It also is about the rebel alliance Luke Skywalker, Princess Lea, Chewbacca,Lando Calrissian, RD-D2, c-3PO. They are looking for Boba Fett so they can capture the body of Han Solo in carbonite, they run into Dash Rendar who helps them for good money. The story takes place between Empire Strikes Back And Return Of The Jedi. It explains stuff that Return Of The Jedi doesn't. This book deserves all 5 stars.

This book was great.
By A Customer
I really loved this book! I bought it and then
read it 5 or 6 times. One of the reasons I liked
this book was that, something was always happening.
There was never a part that I felt like taking a
break, or getting up for a glass of water. It was
great. I really liked the setting (in between
The Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi),
and the way that Prince Xizor was carefully placed
into the storyline. I think this is a must read
book and every one who likes Star Wars should read
it.

About the Author

Born in 1875, C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and innovative thinker whose most influential ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. He is the author of numerous works, including Memories, Dreams, Reflections and Man and His Symbols. He died in 1961.

Written as an introduction for the layperson.
By frumiousb
In the introduction to the book, John Freeman tells the story of how Jung came to get involved with the project. Apparently, the managing director of Aldus books had seen Jung on the BBC and was so struck by his warmth and personableness that he tried to persuade Jung to apply those same qualities to a book written for the general masses, rather than for psychologists themselves. While at first refusing, Jung was swayed by one of his own dreams into changing his mind and agreeing to take on the project. Given that the book to a large degree dwells on dreams and what can be learned from them, it is an appropriate anecdote.

The publisher does not get any praise for designing the cover in such a way that it implies Jung was the author of the entire book. He was the editor and wrote one of the chapters. Neither is the book an integral whole-- the chapters treat different aspects of symbolism and the unconscious, each with their own viewpoint and flavor.

The essays in the book are as follows:

"Approaching the Unconscious" (Carl Jung)-- for those who don't know his work, this is a very nice introduction to most of the basic points.

"Ancient Myths and Modern Man" (Joseph L. Henderson)-- examines symbols as they appear in both myth and modern day culture.

"The Process of Individuation" (M.-L. von Franz)-- treats patterns of dreams over the lifetime of the individual. A good look at the concept of Animus and Anima.

"Symbolism in the Visual Arts" (Aniele Jaffe)-- IMO the weakest chapter, looks at the progression of sacred symbol to art.

"Symbols in an Individual Analysis" (Jolande Jacobi)-- Describes the treatment through dream analysis of a young Swiss man.

While the book felt uneven in places (and even contradictory), it serves well in the purpose for which it was intended. Someone reading the book will get the basic concepts of symbols and the unconscious, and some decent pointers to further readings in the notes if they wanted to find out more.

In-depth yet easy to read
By A Customer
When I picked up this book all I knew about Jung was that he was a close associate and friend of Freud. I put it down wanting to read every thing else this man ever wrote. "Man and His Symbols" outlines the Jungian ideas on the unconscious and the symbols it houses that manifest themselves on our dreams. It gives you a wider scope of humanity that proves to be enlightening and comforting in a crazed world. I was quite surprised at how easy this book proved to read in comparison to other psychology books I have read. It provides a clear overview of Jung's life work and a good introduction to his take on psychology as well as the world. Some parts were written in a curiously personal manor that enhanced a spiritual aura this work seemed to take on. This book really struck a deep cord in me and many of the people I have recommended it to.

Rewarding
By Jakob
If you are a layman like myself and feel that Jung may be a bit difficult to read you should start with this. Although this book does not systematically present his theories, it touches on all of Jung's important contributions to psychology. While reading this book, it was easily understood why Jung was so intrigued by mysticism. The illustrations in this book are amazing, and sometimes spellbinding, and to me they had the effect I think the authors intended -- to understand The archetypes. Read this book. It will take you places you never been or thought you could go.

A Remarkable Woman...
By A Customer
Harriet Tubman is my hero. There will never be enough said about this remarkable woman. Her life should be an inspiration to many.
She suffered abuse as a slave, deprivation and handicap. Unable to read or write she became the Moses of her people, leading over 300 black slaves to freedom. Her contribution didn't stop there, however. She lectured about the evils of slavery and taught many. She served in the Civil War as a nurse, a scout, and a spy. She founded a home for poor, sick, and needy black citizens.
The Story of Harriet Tubman, Conductor of the Underground Railroad is an excellent book. I rate it Five Stars for readability, content, historical value, character training, biography, attention to historic detail, portrayal of an American woman, and truth.
There are other books about Harriet Tubman, and one day I may read and love them all, but this book was the right book at the right time for the kids that I am presently working with. This is a book that could challenge YOU to do and be YOUR best.

Amazing story for all ages!
By L. Lippert
This is a fantastic book! I used this with my second grade students during my Black History unit in February and the students couldn't get enough of it. Harriet Tubman really is an inspiring woman who suffered so much yet found strength within herself to help countless others: from the slaves she led to freedom, to the sick, poor and needy that she selflessly served out of her own home, to the wounded soldiers that she nursed to health during the Civil War. Absolutely amazing.

I would recommend this to teachers of all ages and anyone looking for a great story about Harriet Tubman and her remarkable life.

Lala'z Book Review
By A Customer
I thought that The Story of Harriet Tubman by Kate McMullan was a really good book. It made me realize how hard she worked for her freedom and how she helped many other slaves become free. I've heard about her story but I never knew what kinds of things she went through.
It made me realize how lucky I am to be in a "free land". In all I really liked the book. The story had a lot of action in it and each chapter unraveled another adventure. Like how she knew the swamps by heart and how she was a part of the Civil War. It was a really good book and it tells you a little bit more about Harriet Tubman and her family. I would recommend this book to people who like non-fiction action and adventure.
