Grade 8 Up–Luther's mother, "the Sarge," runs an empire of Flint, MI, slums and halfway houses, and has a loan-sharking business. At age 15, Luther manages one of her halfway houses, drives the residents around in a van with an illegal license, and readies the homes of evicted tenants for the Sarge's next desperate victims. In exchange, she puts his earnings in a college fund, threatens him into submission, and primes him to take over the business. All Luther wants to do is win the school science fair, think deep thoughts, find some action for the vintage condom in his wallet, and do something honest with his life. Curtis tells the teen's story with his usual combination of goofy humor, tongue-in-cheek corniness, and honest emotion. Accordingly, Luther narrates the absurd, embarrassing details of his life with both adult sensitivity and teen crassness. The dialogue between Luther and Sparky, his "womb to tomb" best friend, is at turns hilarious and touching. The Sarge herself is so convincingly sharp-tongued, shrewd, and despicable that she's the novel's juiciest character. The plot unfolds slowly at first, and teens may lose patience with Luther's tendency to feel sorry for himself. The narrator is smart, desperate 15-year-old Luther (not Loser, as some call him) Farrell, who speaks with wit, wisdom, and heartbreaking realism about family, work, school, friends, and enemies. He hates his vicious mom (the "Sarge"), who has made herself rich by milking the system, including evicting poor families from slum housing. Luther's job is to care for four men in Sarge's Adult Rehab Center, another scam. At school he wants to win the science fair medal again, even if his rival is the girl he has loved since kindergarten. Bits of philosophy from Luther's various mentors, who range from Socrates to Judge Judy, blend with the comedy and sorrow. There are some real surprises in plot and character, including a substitute parent Luther finds in an unexpected place and a science project that does change the world. His schemes of revenge and escape are barely credible, but the farce and the failure tell the truth in this gripping story. Hazel Rochman

Curtis is three for three

Best understood by a secondary level student, Curtis carefully delineates a life in Flint, Michigan. His ability to construct a believable scenario, authentic characters and an uplifting ending is sooooo satisfying. This is a book worth missing sleep in order to finish. It has got to be on the Newberry list!

You will cheer

I don't know why this book did not win the Newbery Award this year. I do know that I will be thinking of Luther T. Farrell, his best friend Sparky and his "crew" for a long time.
Luther is a bright thoughtful 15 year old with penchant for philosophers. His focus in life is to win the school science fair for the third year in a row. When not going to school he is thinking about Shayla, the love of his life since kindergarten. He works for (and also fears) his mother, known as "the Sarge." He must clean up her rental properties after the tenants been evicted and take care of his crew of elderly men who live in one of his mother's group homes. He shaves them, feeds them and cleans up after them. Luther's wry commentary and outlook on life infuse the story with humor and poignancy.
Luther is fully aware of the Sarge's deficiencies as a parent and human being but he accepts his life because she is putting money for college into an account for him in payment for his work and afterall, she is his mom. He understands that his mother has traded in her humanity for financial success as a loan shark and slum lord but he is naive about lengths she will go to protect her empire.
Christopher Paul Curtis creates the most likable characters.
(I have always felt like Bud in Bud Not Buddy was one of the bravest kids I've ever met in a book.) Luther is another great character. He treats his crew with dignity and kindness. He is totally clueless when dealing with Shayla and his exchanges with his best friend Sparky will make you laugh out loud. Sparky's goal in life is to achieve an injury that will result a cash award from a personal injury lawsuit. His harebrained schemes are hilarious.
As the story unwinds, the reader is routing for Luther to find a way out and hoping for a softening of the Sarge's heart. The ending of the book is neatly done. You will cheer.
Michael Boatman's reading perfectly captures the voice and spirit of the story. I highly recommend this audio book and I agree with School Library Journal that this story would be best appreciated by readers grade 8 and up.

A Crazy Hillarious Story

Bucking The Sarge is about a kid named Luther T. Farrell and his friend Dewey. Dewey is his real name but Luther calls him Sparky. Luther and his mom own the Happy Neighbor Group Homes Inc. Luther has to take care of the group home while his mom works at a loan company. Luther and Sparky are always doing stupid stuff. They call Luther's mom the Sarge because she is always so strict. In the book Luther and Sparky are always trying to get away with things without getting caught. Sparky wants to sue someone so he can become rich. They try all kinds of different plans to sue someone but they aren't very successful. Luther becomes good friends with Chester X, one of the men at the group home, and they always talk to each other about their problems. Luther talks to Chester X for advice on stuff like girls. He ends up being a big help to Luther. Then Luther gets his mom in big trouble, so in the end it is about Luther trying fight his way past his mom before she goes over the top.
One thing I liked a lot about this book is it was really funny. Luther and Sparky are always getting in trouble and it's fun to see how things turn out. Another thing I like is it always made me want to keep reading. The author did a really good job of leaving cliff hangers. One more thing I liked is in the book they are in almost the same grade as me so it is easy to make connections and relate to the book.
If you like funny books this is a good book for you. It will give you a good laugh and you won't be able to put the book down. The book is also very exciting. Even though it's kind of more of a guy's book, I think a lot of girls would like it too.
