Eldon, the younger son, begins his own story, in spring, when everything is soft. While he describes for readers the farm activities of each season and narrates memorable pranks and milestones of his boyhood, it is the palpable awareness of place and character that is unforgettable. Paulsen, with a simple intensity, brings to consciousness the texture, the smells, the light and shadows of each distinct season. He has penned a mood poem in prose. Uncle David's final story precipitates within the brothers a fuller understanding of personal identity and integrity. I liked "Hatchet" better

Read it at the request pf my 9 year old grandson and passed it on to another of my grandsons. I liked "Hatchet" better.

A wonderful book by a skilled author

One of the best ways a writer can improve his own writing is to read, and aspiring writers of children's fiction can't do much better than reading Newberry Honor books such as "The Winter Room" by Gary Paulsen.
"The Winter Room" is a short book that tells a simple story about life on a northern Minnesota farm over a single turn of the seasons. Yet, the simplicity of the story is deceiving because this story delves deeply into such complex subjects as the value of myth and the relationship between generations.
Anyone expecting wizards, dragons, or treasure hunts will be disappointed. But make no mistake, there is magic in this book; it's just not the type of magic that requires a wand or cauldron to conjure.
The story is told through the eyes of a young boy named Eldon. He lives on the farm with his older brother Wayne, his mother and father, and his two great-uncles, David and Nels. The story begins in spring with the melting of the snow and continues through summer and fall with fantastic descriptions of life on the farm. Through these little snippets of farm life, you get to know the characters and become immersed in their world.
Then comes winter, during which the family spends the long, cold evenings in the eponymous "winter room", gathered around the wood stove listening to Uncle David's stories. The family, especially the boys, enjoy Uncle David's tales. Then, one evening, Uncle David tells "the story that broke things" and causes Wayne to brand him a liar and a braggart.
The tension caused by this event is touching and I don't want to give away how it is resolved. The denouement is one of those gems that I am always hoping for in books but rarely find.
Another amazing thing about this book is the economy of the language. There is no excess verbiage here. Yet, the simple sentences and words create vivid images in the reader's mind. Paulsen is an expert at description and it is made obvious in his wonderful introduction to the book.
"If books could be more, could show more, could own more, this book would have smells...It would have the smells of old farms; the sweet smell of new-mown hay as it falls off the oiled sickle blade...the sticky-slick smell of birth when the calves come...the pungent fermented smell of the chopped corn silage when it is brought into the manger on the silage fork..."
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

Imagine living on a farm your whole life, in winter wouldn't it be cold living in just a log house? "The Winter Room" has an intro called the Tuning and someone I know read the book with out the Tuning and did not get the book. One of the main characters [Eldon] almost explains the world from his eyes and the way of life from his eyes. I love the way Gary Paulson writes the main characters in the first few pages of the book, and the chapters are almost all seasons or what is going on to Eldon and his family that season!
This book is a calm relaxing book to read. "The Winter Room" is the kind of book that makes you want to keep reading. It is a higher lexile. This realistic book is a must read for 5th through 8th grade! When I read this book I didn't want to stop then when I was done reading the book I thought it might be a good idea to go back and skim through the book and I saw that almost all the characters are on almost every page, and when I saw that Wayne is mean to to his brother and I made a connection and thats what I like in books [I pick on my sister].When I was almost done reading the book I told a few people they should read it and how great it was, and when I was reading it my attention was on the book. Eldon and his brother do not get along very well, Eldon gets picked on by his brother. They help their dad on the farm. The main characters are very important, if they were not there the story would be just words on paper. Then there is Uncle David, he talks Jewish and reads the Jewish Bible and then there is Nels he does the same thing as Uncle David, [they are brothers], and live with Eldon and his family. Eldon's family owns a farm, and Eldon's father does everything on the farm like tell the boys what to do and makes sure all the animals are healthy [all the farmer stuff] Eldon's mom stays inside all day, and cooks dinner breakfast and supper all day! I recommend the book from 5th grade to 8th. Thats why I wrote this book review.
