Grade 1-3-- The lights are extinguished in a cabin in the snowy northern woodlands, and nocturnal animals begin their nightly search for food, water, and shelter. A great horned owl swoops over the moonlit cabin and one by one, a coyote, porcupine, bobcat, and other mammals appear. The text gently introduces nocturnal animals and creates an awareness of their survival skills, but at times is limited in discussing specific behaviors. The strength of this book is the realistic double-page illustrations. Printed on light blue paper, framed woodland scenes of deeper shades of blue are offset by white, creating a mood of hushed stillness in the shadowy woods. The animals are skillfully blended into the woodland habitat and are easy to locate and identify. Each illustration is dappled with white specks to represent falling snow; some children may question why it is snowing when the moon is shining, but this technique does enhance the winter scenes. For young children who wonder what is happening outside while they are snug in their beds, reach for this book for the beauty of its snowy landscapes and as an introduction to the nocturnal animals that leave their footprints in the snow. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. North Country Night

This is a story about the North Country, and how it is on a snowy night when all the people are in their cabins and houses asleep. Read along, as you experience each individual adventures of the animals. Travel with an owl one minute, then a gray coyote the next. Read about the fox, looking for a place to sleep. This story is an okay story, but really good for litte children who love animals. They can follow along with them, experiencing what they are to do next. The illustrations let you experience and see what the animals are getting into. Read this story to your littlest one, curled up on the couch with hot cocoa on a cold, snowy, winter evening, and they'll go to bed wondering, "What are the animals doing tonight?"

THE BEAUTY AND QUIETUDE OF THE NIGHT

It is nighttime, and one by one the animals come out to enjoy the tranquil beauty of a winter night and search for a tasty meal. The realistic and beautiful illustrations and gentle text draw the reader/listener into the story. I have used this book in Pre-school Storytime programs. The children sit in hushed silence, not moving and sigh gently at the conclusion of the story. They love it!

Daniel San Souci carries a soft tonal effect from daylight to dawn. The book is created on a pale blue stock. An environment pervades, which allows the reader to feel as if they are watching a live cast of characters from behind a tree on a cold winter's night.
