I really enjoyed this book
By JCO
Stick with it, intrepid reader!

This was a tough book. I disagree with the statement that this is for 'teenagers'. Frankly, I don't think as a teenager I would have appreciated it as much as I do now, nor would a teenager get various references or get as much insight from it. However, not to disparage them, I'm sure they would pick up other ideas that have lost relevance to me over time.

Regardless, I really enjoyed this book. It was a tough slog - you spend the first 60% of the book wondering what the big deal is. Then at about 65% things pick up. I liken the book to the adventure the 'protagonist' goes on - for a long time HE doesn't know what's going on, either - he's confused, distrustful, disoriented. Much like you'll be as you read through it. His condition and our condition lasts interminably long. Then things are finally revealed, or at least, understood or 'learned'. I as a reader had revelations as well and philosophically took something from the climax. As the story winds it's way to resolution, you the reader also must stick with a long reading period until you finally come to the conclusion - along with the protagonist. I won't spoil the ending, but there is a final commonality between you the reader, and your protagonist.

Well written, but the descriptions were a little difficult - I wish more time had been spent orienting the island so you could picture it a little better, but that's a minor issue.

Not my kind of thriller....
By JSchmidt
I couldn't get through it....I like fast paced thrillers...This was VERY descriptive and 18 chapters into the book and there still wasn't really any story to follow ..... Not for me. I will stick to Robert Drugoni , Angela Marstons and Jennifer Hillier!

Fantastic
By Seth Hettena
I wish I could go back in time to the point where I hadn't read the Magus, and I envy anyone who picks it up for the first time.

Shortly after we are introduced to Maurice Conchis, the magician behind The Magus, he declares the novel dead as an art form. But then author John Fowles then proceeds to show just how lively a book can be. Fowles uses words that couldn't be found in my dictionary, but I found the narrative impossible to put down.

I felt in league with narrator Nicholas Urfe -- we both knew we were being toyed with and we sought an explanation that wasn't forthcoming, but the drama Conchis and Fowles created for us were so delicious that we want it to go on forever. And that I suppose is the point.
