As a prosecutor, she was a loud and public critic of "the program," and as events unfold, it appears that her deadliest enemies may not be safely behind bars.
Some of the most interesting passages put Kirsten and Gregory together in scenes that underscore White's professional expertise. A clinical psychologist in private practice in Boulder, he brings his understanding of human nature out of the consulting room and onto the page. Once it recovers from a wobbly beginning, this ninth thriller in the bestselling series featuring Boulder, Colo., clinical psychologist Alan Gregory sprints competently along. Peyton Francis, aka Kirsten Lord, was once a New Orleans district attorney. Now she and her nine-year-old daughter are enrolled in the witness protection program, in hiding from Peyton's husband's assassin, who was most likely hired by a Colombian drug lord Peyton put away for life. Given a new ID and moved to Boulder, Peyton is befriended by another witness protection participant, a former mob hitman who, like herself, is referred by the Feds to Dr. Gregory for counseling. Plagued by doubts about the federal marshal entrusted with her safety and tortured by second thoughts about the impending execution of a black man she may have mistakenly sent to death row in Florida, Peyton races against time to stay the Florida execution, and is forced to go into hiding from the very witness protection forces assigned to protect her. The usually sure-handed White is guilty of some artless writing at the novel's start, creating a veritable obstacle course of meandering points of view, including an obscure long-running metaphoric thread linking repressed memories to images of a pod of whales. However, once the narrative drive settles mainly into Peyton's first-person voice, the story comes handily together. Featuring an interesting cast, including a young Texas schoolmarm turned professional hit person, a sinister cabal of federal marshals with hidden agendas and an entrepreneurial assassination broker in Atlanta, the narrative drives to an edge-of-your-seat denouement. After the murder of her husband, Kirsten Lord, a New Orleans district attorney and her nine-year-old daughter are sent into the U.S. Marshal's Witness Security Program (WITSEC) when a local drug dealer and rapist she prosecuted threatens them. She is relocated to Colorado, where she meets with Alex Gregory (White's psychologist hero) because he has been contracted by WITSEC to interview and monitor those in the group. Kirsten's position is tenuous: prior to the events that drove her into the program she was a critic of it, so she receives threats as a result. Another concern involves her best friend, a prosecutor she worked with to convict a man years before who is now scheduled to be executed, but because of new information, they are no longer certain he committed the crime. White's ability to create drama, suspense, and weave plots together in a thrilling d?nouement, as well as develop a fine cast, makes this a real treat. One of the best thrillers

This story hooked me right in the beginning and didn't let go. I hated to see it end and yet I read it quickly to find out how it was going to end. The suspense was keeping me on the edge of my seat at all times. I loved this novel and thought it was one of the best written stories I have read.
I enjoyed the narration changing from Kirsten/Peyton to Alan to others in the woven story. It kept my interest as the main character, Kirsten/Peyton moved from the point of her husband's murder to Boulder, Co into the Witness Protection Program. There was always something happening to her and others----never boring. When Kristen/Peyton was the narrator, there was such a great sense of humor. I found myself laughing outloud at some of the writing. It was almost hard to believe that there could be so much humor in the story of a hit man and murder. The ending was quite intense----I'd love to read a sequel containing many of these characters.
I haven't read anything by this author in the past----but if this is any indication of his writing skills, I'll be reading him in the future.

The protected become the hunted...

so begins the profile of this book on its jacket. And, throughout his newest novel, Stephen White capitalizes on this theme.
The 9th book in his series about Boulder psychologist Alan Gregory, leaves no room for doubt that White can be a masterful storyteller, even with Gregory playing a supporting role.
Many of the prior reviewers have captured the essence of the storyline, although I found it difficult to put down throughout the course of the novel. White experiments successfully with different narrarators throughout the book, adding to the experience of the novel, rather than detracting from it, in the hands of a less skilled writer. He also gets yet another opportunity to explore one of his quirky passions, the Witness Protection program, in depth. Past White novels have allowed us to learn and explore more about the sport of cycling, the Church of the Latter Day Saints, the condition of multiple sclerosis, etc., while the mystery plotline evolves around his willingness to share knowledge on a variety of topics. I think that is what makes him a favorite of many devoted readers, and reminds me of the early books of Jonathan Kellerman.
In particular, Lauren Crowder, wife of Gregory, remains a compelling yet flawed character, enhanced in this book even though she has only a minor role.
The real stars are Kirsten Lord, and Carl Luppo. Luppo is pretty well drawn, but the dialogue in therapy between Gregory and Lord is outstanding, and the time spent evolving the "whales" terminology that Lord uses is just as interesting as the revelation of her status as a totally dependent woman, a surprise to both her and to the reader.
Just an outstanding read, and a book to treasure. Can be enjoyed without reading the first 8 novels, but you must go back and explore them as well!

Another White Misfire

White continues to disappoint. I liked his first book but every subsequent book has been wanting in one respect or another. Granted, his books grab you at the very outset and keep you reading, even though the plots are overly contrived. And White keeps inserting his pet social peeves throughout the books to the point where you wonder whether he is more interested in entertaining readers or indoctrinating them. So, by the end of his books, you're so tired of overlooking his failures and excesses that you feel let down. This is a typical Stephen White book: Starts off with a bang, then spirals into unrealism. It's like eating cotton candy. At some point you feel the need for real food. White has it in him to be a much better author. I hope he succeeds, but this offering comes up short.
