Gr 8 Up-In her signature dramatic style, McDaniel explores the grief, anger, and upheaval caused by a school bombing. Complete with pep rallies and teen romances, Edison High School is ordinary and suburban. But when a bomb explodes just before morning classes start, students find their lives turning upside down. Through the perspectives of teens impacted by the blast, readers will quickly empathize with their confusion, despair, and determination. Characters represent a mix of the school's population, including a popular cheerleader, the student-council president, a goth girl, and an outsider. While characterizations can be broad, none of them slips into stereotypes. The characters speak and act in a believable manner save for some instances-e.g., one teen refers to his "Web avatar," which seems a bit dated. The shocking fate of two characters involved in a romantic relationship is revealed dramatically. The depiction of the explosion, panic, and glee felt by the main perpetrator while witnessing the explosion from a safe distance are realistically detailed. However, the exposure of the true perpetrators is a bit rushed and anticlimactic. Morgan is a popular cheerleader who is dating jealous Trent, and Roth is a goth who doesn’t realize that his only friend (and occasional hookup), Liza, has feelings for him. The four teens are forever changed when someone detonates a bomb in the middle of the school, killing and maiming many of their classmates. McDaniel’s story works best when she sticks close to her familiar territory—teens dealing with devastating illness or injury. She is less successful at intrigue, and the weak ending includes a deus ex machina that pulls in random characters to take the blame. A romance between Morgan and Roth is roughly sketched out, but they are likable characters who readers will enjoy, and the idea that high-school romance may still be true love even if it doesn’t last forever is refreshing. A Lurlene McDaniel

When I was in the 8th grade, I discovered an author named Lurlene McDaniel. I decided to randomly pick out one of her books and read it. By the end of 8th grade, I had read every book she had published that I could get my hands on. After reading all of these books, I knew what her future books would be about. Red Heart Tattoo was a story about love, loss, and moving on when a devastating event occurs.
This book was short. Like really short so it didn't leave a lot of room for character development, which wasn't the best thing in the world, but I'll get to that. The plot was fast and things simply happened in the blink of an eye. That aspect went really well with the story line, which dealt with a bomb being set off, and the fact that life can (and will) change within a blink of an eye. But I wanted more. Certain things happened WAY too fast and I wanted Lurlene McDaniel to take her time expanding on everything...for instance, how fast the kids who set off the bomb were caught.
Now for the characters: I didn't particularly love them but I didn't hate them either. They were rather clichéd, which didn't surprise me all that much. One of the characters is that popular girl and her boyfriend is the jock and then there's the bad boy who's in love with the popular girl. The difference being that they go through something traumatic and they have to figure out a way to get out of it.
Lurlene McDaniel's writing wasn't...mature. These are high school kids, y'all and even though they don't always have a ver large vocabulary, they can have a mature voice to them. This book did not and it felt like it was written more for younger children but with older characters. So, overall, I thought this book was okay. I didn't love it all that much: not much character development occurred but you felt for the characters anyways.

Great story

Red Heart Tattoo by Lurlene McDaniel tells the story of several students that are involved in a school bombing. The book focuses mostly on Roth a boy with a troubled past who rushes in to save victims of the bombing and Morgan the class president whom he saves and whom is blinded in the bombing. The students must figure out how to heal and move on after the horrible tragedy.
While I enjoyed this book and was very interested in how everything would work out I also found myself frustrated by the format. The story follows several different characters, bouncing from one to another without headings to tell the reader who they are following. However, aside from this it was a very good story with realistic and diverse characters dealing with everyday problems and pressures in addition to tragedy.
Appropriateness: This is a tough book that puts teens in tough situations. The teens are in their last year of high school and act their age. The book follows one of the teens that orchestrates the bombing and other teens deal with the pressure to have sex, teen pregnancy and minor law breaking. There is some heavy petting but no actual sex. I would recommend this book to teens 14+

This is my first Lurlene McDaniel book and I'm not overwhelmed. The plot was good, the writing was okay, but I just wasn't smitten.
The novel opened with a prank involving some fireworks that suddenly go off in the middle of a pep rally. The students reacted so dramatically, I assumed the bomb mentioned in the book's blurb had already happened (it hadn't). So, at first I was confused; why were they acting so put-out over a little firework display?
The plot was topical and interesting. Not only does it deal with the bombing, we follow as the entire town learns to cope with the aftermath.
Two boys, whom we know only as Executioner and Apocalypse, move from general disdain of the other kids to setting off a bomb in the school. Clearly Executioner, the leader, was a sociopath, but I wasn't convinced that Apocalypse would have followed Executioner so blindly. He seemed like a fairly normal teenager, not one I would have presumed could do such a thing. Maybe it was because we never learned anything about them before we were introduced to them as future bombers. I think we were just supposed to take it on face value that they were `evil'.
Morgan was a strong character that I generally liked. She was popular and dated the most handsome jock, but she wasn't a total snob, she was still friendly with the less popular kids. She was a bit naïve, though, and I didn't believe how her relationship developed with Roth. You'd think that with this huge event in her life, her blindness, and the fact that Roth was the primary suspect in the bombing, might give her pause, but nope. She jumped right in. Morgan's mom didn't seem realistic to me. The entire town, including the local police, are positive Roth is responsible for the bombing, and she jumps right to defend him. I think in a situation like that, any mom would have been much more guarded and suspicious. And Roth was a bit of a mystery to me, too. He was a suspect in the bombing, yet did nothing to defend himself? It was like he just ignored it. Liza seemed almost like a throwaway character to me; perhaps McDaniel needed someone to introduce a little conflict between Roth and Morgan, so she added Liza. We never learned much at all about her, or why she felt the way she did about Roth.
The writing seemed choppy to me, and I never would have guessed that Lurlene McDaniel has authored over 80 books. It was also very short, and I think that affected how little she was able to develop the characters, settings and scenes. I would have enjoyed it much more if these areas had been better fleshed out. I didn't think the ending was very satisfactory.
The cover is okay. It matches the tone of the book, and it will get your attention, but I'm just kind of meh about it. Pretty much how I feel about the book itself.
