Favorite book ever, as reviewed by a bibliophile!

Yes, this book is extremely graphic, and might be too much so for some readers. However, and this is a big however, every American needs to read it! The atrocities that we perpetuated during Jim Crow is something that is not taught in most schools. Yes, it is touched upon, but this is a topic that needs to be heard from someone who grew up in the South during this most tragic time period and witnessed the murders, tortures and utter violence.
Moody gives us a glimpse into what it was like to be a young black female growing up in that place at that time. It inspired me to take a road trip across Mississippi tracing the locations that she mentions. It was a sad trip, but I felt it was a good way for me (a white woman from the east coast) to get a better understanding of what actually happened.
I have purchased at least ten copies over the years and given to many friends who seemed interested in the topic.
This is by far my favorite book I have ever read--which includes thousands!

Beautifully written. Reads like a novel.

What an amazing book!! To know this book was bravely published in 1968, when the Civil Rights issues were still a hot topic, is telling of how Anne (Essie Mae) Moody unabashadly tells the stories of her life in Mississippi. She didn't wait for controversies and prejudice to cool down. She let her voice be known at a time when immediate influence was necessary.
She draws readers into this autobiography that reads more like a novel than a memoir, with tales of herself, a little girl exchanging work for milk for her family. She then shares her teenage years, as a beautiful girl struggling though work, school and family upheaval. Then as a young adult putting her life and that of her family at risk fighting for Civil Rights.
This is a touching story of leadership, accountability, struggle and victory.
Having missed this historical generationmyself by being born in the 70s, it is incredibly angering to know that there was such a distinction made between races. Even worse, that it was a LEGAL distinction.
This book was really incredible. I can see why it continues to be ppular more than 40 years after it's original publication.

Sheer Genius

This book is one of the best memoirs I have ever had the pleasure of reading, if not the best. Moody has got a whole lot of what I can only refer to as intestinal fortitude. Her bravery in writing this account of her life growing up in a racist Mississippi is reminiscent of the mother who demanded an open casket at her son's funeral (Emmett Till). Both women were concerned with making the world look at its own ugliness.
What I truly appreciate is that Moody is mad, and this comes out continually through her prose, but she DOES NOT SENTIMENTALIZE.
She has a way with words and emotions that will put you on the scene and her relation of her time in college and in the Black Movement are particularly poignant. When you read this work, you too, will be mad--and if you are anything like me, you will find yourself in wonder of how such conditions could have existed only 40-50 years ago. This autobiography, sets in stone if you will, the account of blatant and brutal murders and abuses that took place against blacks everyday in the South. You will come away from this work with an education and perhaps a heavy heart...but the close of the book does allow for one thing: a glimmer of hope.
This memoir should be compulsory reading for every American citizen. It gives us all the information our American history books conveniently left out.
