Starred Review. Three elements make the latest from Wiprud (Crooked) a laugh-out-loud triumph. First, its protagonist: ex-professional hit man Sid "Sleep" Bifulco, a wise guy relocated to a "dot on the map" fishing community called Hellbender Eddy, Pa., after turning state's evidence against his mob buddies. Although he's never dropped a line in the water—all he knows about his second career he learned in the slammer from magazines like Sports Astream and Rod & Rifle—he doesn't let that stop him from diving into the fishing pool nose first. Second, its supporting cast: Sid assumes that country folk are either ignorant or naïve, and despite their quirks—Little Bob videotapes his every waking moment; the state trooper's pregnant wife refuses to let her delicate condition get in the way of her X-rated movie career—they get to prove him wrong, to delicious effect. Finally, a bucketful of hilarious miscommunications gives the plot—which includes the accidental slaughter of a scumbag and a missing video recording of it, a guardian angel with a soft spot for assassination, and a secret from Sid's past that could turn his fishing buddy homicidal—a serpentine trajectory that makes this suspenseful black comedy a page-turning, one-sitting read. Angling for gansters
By KEVIN OBRIEN
Sleeping with the Fishes is a quick lively read. Mr. Wiprud has a sense of humor worthy of Donald E. Westlake. Well-drawn characters -- gangsters, fishermen, regular townpeople -- weave their threads of the story around fish, a thieving crow, red shoes, and more fish. The result is a bubbling rollicking ride through the rapids. In a nutshell, the story is about an ex-convict, retired from his gangland days, who wants nothing more than a quiet life in a small town on the river on which he intends to spend his days fishing. He draws on his expertise, provided by his former avocation, in handling a delicate matter for his fishing expert neighbor. A possibly incriminating video tape appears, gets misplaced, and reappears in unexpected places, former associates of the ex-con arrive wishing to renew his acquaintance, and complications arise. This was fun.

Like eating chili with your hands...

...it still tastes good, but man, is it sloppy.
I'd never heard of Brian Wiprud before finding this book, which I happened to discover while on a shopping kick for obscure writers and titles. So I thought, "What the hay? It's short (under 240 pages), so if it blows I wouldn't have wasted that much of my time."
The result? A fun story but a messy novel.
If ever the cliché, "a bad writer but a great storyteller" applied to a writer or his work, it's Brian Wiprud and SLEEP WITH THE FISHES. The writing is atrocious. Wiprud writes his dialogue phonetically, with a lot of "ya," "siddown," "shaddup," and "c'meres," just to name a few. It's annoying and distracting, making nearly every character sound alike. His narrative can be pretty weak, leaving me to wonder who was saying or doing what to whom at any given point. Confusing. And to add insult to injury, at the top of page 150 a character's eyes are described as blue. At the bottom of the same page, they're brown. You literally need a bib to read this book, it's that messy.
If you have the patience to read past all that, however, you'll discover a very clever and amusing plot. Much more a "caper" in the vein of Elmore Leonard than a mystery, it introduces the reader to a cast of eccentric characters who all get tangled up in the same giant mess. The resulting hijinx are hilarious, and they had me laughing out loud many times. The ending isn't quite as fulfilling as I'd like, but I read on Wiprud's website that he's penned a sequel to FISHES entitled DIRT NAP. This picks up where FISHES left off, including the dangling, unsatisfying conclusion (DIRT NAP has yet to be published, however).
Overall, though, I'd recommend SLEEP WITH THE FISHES for those of you who enjoy breezy, clever stories with a liberal dose of humor thrown in. But be warned: If you hate bad writing, you'd be better off seeking out Victor Gischler or Elmore Leonard.

Not Quite High Enough Quality You'd Stay Up and Miss Sleep For, But Better Than Watching Fish Swim Round and Round!
By James N Simpson
Sleep With Fishes is compared on the cover to Carl Hiaasen, it is the same genre but Wiprud's writing is not in the league of the masters like Hiaasen, Dave Barry, Bill Fitzhugh, Linwood Barclay, Donald E. Westlake and so on. Saying that though, Wiprud can write to that standard. Check out Feelers which is a brilliantly written book. In just relation to Sleep With Fishes, if you're a fan of the genre and you don't go in with high expectations you'll enjoy this short novel.
Sleep with the Fishes has some great comedic scenes, it uses the two characters thinking the other is talking about something else angle well (fish/dead body). Main character ex mobster Sid with fishing after practicing in the yard at jail and not realising a river/pond is a lot different to that and what he's read in books has some hilarious moments. There are some good scenes in the book but the characters just don't have the factor that keeps you turning the pages no matter what else is happening that the great stories have.
Basic plot is an ex hit man mobster provides evidence against the rest of his family in return for a minor sentence and a pay off from the rival family. He decides when he is released he will take up the life of fishing and relocates to a small rural fishing town. Of course there are those who want to get even for the snitching. The locals also aren't the brightest bunch and an incident drunk driving involving a video means they will need to rely on Sid's area of expertise to get them out of it.
