From Publishers Weekly
At the request of the late Newbery medalist O'Dell ( Island of the Blue Dolphins ), his widow, Hall, collaborated on this story about Sound of Running Feet, the daughter of Chief Joseph of the Ne-mee-po, or Nez Perce Indians. Sound of Running Feet narrates the betrayal of her people, their flight, last battles and final surrender. In typical O'Dell fashion, the novel serves up a generous helping of historical fact and general information about the Ne-mee-po and their way of life. Unfortunately, a formal and reserved tone ("I had loved him for a long time, for as many moons as there were stars") keep the reader at arm's length from the characters, which in turn does little to amplify or personalize their plight. Readers may find that the novel's choicest parts are those trimmed closest to the factual bone--though topping Chief Joseph's "Hear me, my chiefs" speech will prove difficult, this work may encourage youngsters to sample some of its source material. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-- A poignant story as told by Sound of Running Feet, the daughter of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce people. In her clear, unflinching voice, she tells of the long, tearful, bloody trail that her people were forced to follow from their beloved home in Wallowa Valley, Oregon, to their final confrontation with the American soldiers at the Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. There, in now famous words, `` `. . . From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever,' '' Chief Joseph surrenders on behalf of his once proud warriors who are cold, surrounded, and outnumbered. As stated in the foreword written by O'Dell's wife, who finished the book after his death, many of the people, events, and even words used in the story are based on historical record. Other characters and events are fictionalized or composites. Most notable among them is Swan Necklace, who is initially a pacifist but who becomes enraged as he witnesses the oppression and injustice his people suffer at the hands of the soldiers. The story's effectiveness is weakened, however, by the unnecessary and sometimes jarring romance story line between Sound of Running Feet and Swan Necklace. Despite this flaw, this is an admirable final addition to O'Dell's legacy of powerful novels. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY

From Kirkus Reviews
Seen through the eyes of Chief Joseph's daughter, Sound of Running Feet, O'Dell's last novel (coauthored and completed after his death by his wife) recounts the circuitous, tragic journey of the Ne-mee-poo (Nez Perce) from their Oregon home to the Lapwai Reservation in Idaho. Wisely recognizing that there's no way to fight the encroaching whites, Chief Joseph counters calls to war from dissenting tribal leaders and agrees to lead his people on what becomes an epic ordeal. Attacked by settlers en route, they win some battles against the ``Blue Coats,''but the decimated tribe makes it into Crow territory only to find that their former allies are in league with the Army. Heading for refuge with Sitting Bull in Canada, they're caught in a surprise attack that leaves no choice but surrender. Bringing this bleak historical episode to life in spare, supple prose that echoes Joseph's own dignified words, the authors offer a fascinating look at the heroism of ordinary people. While the strong-willed narrator, her father, and her brave betrothed at first seem larger than life, it is quickly apparent that they don't consider themselves as such; and though she wishes she could fight, the girl dutifully takes her place caring for the young and the infirm. The authors don't tone down war's violence; they simply present it with unembellished clarity that is certain to leave a lasting impression, ending on a memorable note of reconciliation. A fitting end to a distinguished career. Map (not seen). (Fiction. 10-14) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee...For 5th-8th graders
By Lara Rivard P.
When I was a 5th and 6th grade teacher, this was one of the few books that I used every year with my reading groups.

If ever a book for young adults was written that tears at one's heart and helps one understand the plight of the Nez Perce (and countless other American Indian tribes), this book is it.

Chief Joseph is one of my heroes. This book was a book that my students couldn't put down. It is beautifully written, full of similie, metaphor, and foreshadowing and is a book about the horrors of genocide written in a way that 5th grade and up students can understand.

It is incredibly informative and age appropriate.

One of my top 10 picks.

Don't Let Bigotry Rule You
General Howard has run the Nee-Mee-Poo out of their territory but the tribe wants to stay. Howard is taking the tribe to a reservation. The tribe strikes back in battle. They flee to the west when they have got Howard's army on they're heels. But the army isn't giving up. They track and fight the Nee-Mee-Poo many times during the story, when will it ever end?
Find out! I thought this book was outstanding book because of the emotion and how you feel like part of the story. I think this is a good book for anybody who likes to read. This is by far the best book I have ever read, by far!

Definately one of O'dell's best! Excellent!

"We are few, and they are many. They will devour us," says the chief of the Nee-mee-po tribe, Joseph. The early American Soldiers, called the "Blue Coats" by the Native Americans, were forcing the Nee-mee-po tribe of the Wallawa Valley, to a reservation far away. The tribe tries to make an agreement, but the soldiers won't give in. The Blue Coats begin a battle and the tribe must flee. Sound of Running Feet, the chief's daughter, doesn't want to leave, and neither do many other members of the tribe. The tribe must go to Old Lady's Country, where it is safe. There are many battles along the way and many people die. Most of them are the Nee-mee-po. Finally the tribe must surrender, but Sound of Running Feet and her fiancé, Swan Necklace, escape. Swan necklace is killed on their way to safety and Sound of Running Feet must continue alone.
This book was great! This is definitely one of O'dell's best. Thunder Rolling in the Mountains shows how Native American tribes had to have immense courage. Sound of Running Feet was a great character, as was her father Chief Joseph. This is a great book, and it is one of my favorites.
