Amid the grandeur of the remote Pacific Northwest stands Kingcome, a village so ancient that, according to Kwakiutl myth, it was founded by the two brothers left on earth after the great flood. The Native Americans who still live there call it Quee, a place of such incredible natural richness that hunting and fishing remain primary food sources.
But the old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaces by a new culture of prefab housing and alcoholism. Kingcome's younger generation is disenchanted and alienated from its heritage. And now, coming upriver is a young vicar, Mark Brian, on a journey of discovery that can teach him—and us—about life, death, and the transforming power of love.

An Essay About Everything
By Sparrow L
I hate it when someone sees me reading a book and asks, "What's it about?" If the book is worth reading, it's about many things, and the person asking the question wants me to give him the answers without him having to do the work. It's like spending 2 hours doing algebra homework, and then some class clown wants to copy your answers! Sorry no deal! But I'll tell you what this book is about. It's about everything. It's about what it means to exist, to be alive in the world as an individual, as a member of a culture, and as a spiritual being in a spiritual world. It's about death and immortality, trust and love. It's an essay written in the dialect of fiction, without being sentimental. The style reminds me a bit of Hemingway, in the best possible sense. If you read it, your life will be richer for it. If you don't read it, I suppose you'll never know what you've missed.

This story grips you from the start and letting go ...
By Nancy McBride
This story grips you from the start and letting go at the end is heart wrenching. I've read it 3 times and felt the same way each time.

Five Stars
By BlueJay590
Another sad story of people with, seemingly, good intentions doing untold harm in the name of God.
